Romney Throws a "Hail Mary"?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:14 PM

Mitt Romney's first TV ad is going up.  As you will see, it's pretty sharp.  He looks good, but then, he almost always looks good.

The obvious question is: Why in the world would a campaign spend money on TV almost a year before any votes are cast?

Jonathan Martin of the Politico writes: "Asked why the campaign would air commercials so far ahead of the first voting, Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said, 'It's the perfect time."

So now is the perfect time?  (Okay, in fairness, what would you expect a paid political operative to say?:  "Our campaign is taking a huge gamble.  We're really running the ads because if our poll numbers don't improve, we won't be able to raise money.  And if that happens, the campaign will collapse?").

Of course not!

So they spin.  What is spin?  Simply put, when you're handed a lemon, you make lemonade.  It's not lying -- it's making lemonade.  But the best spin doesn't set off my "spin detector."  This does.

So what is the real goal of these ads?  Probably not to directly influence how people will vote on Election Day.  Undecided voters (the ones who matter most) don't make up their minds until right before an election. Traditional campaign strategy is to harvest your resources and spend them at the end of a campaign ... when average voters are finally starting to pay attention (you and I are political junkies, but average voters aren't).

I admire what Romney is doing right now -- which (if he actually puts real money behind these ads) is essentially laying all his cards on the table and betting the house.  He's taking a gamble that these commercials will move the numbers enough to allow him to convince donors that he can beat McCain and Rudy (who have consistently been ahead of him in the polls).  I respect that.  He has moxie.  But don't tell me this is part of the master plan.

Of course, it's possible these ads are simply meant to generate early "buzz."  If that's the case, it's working (we're talking about them, aren't we?).  The way to tell if the ads are strictly to create buzz is to find out how big the ad buys are.  If they only buy a few hundred points, we will know the intent wasn't to move the numbers -- just to get some earned media.

Either way, by running these ads early, the Romney Team is defying conventional wisdom.  Every dollar Romney spends now is a dollar he won't be able to spend next January.  Meanwhile, his opponents are running traditional campaigns and banking their bucks.

Sometimes "Hail Mary" passes work, but let's not forget that football teams don't throw "Hail Mary" passes (pardon the religious imagery) if they are winning.   (Longshot Duncan Hunter was the first to buy TV ads in New Hampshire.  Need I say more?)

By spending his money early, Romney is taking a gamble that may pay off.  That's fine.  Call it moxie.  But don't call it standard operating procedure.

He Has To Spend The Money...
...because of schmucks like you who spread disinformation about his positions on the issues, and not-so-secretly appeal to religious bigotry on blogs in order to boost rival candidates.

Matt Lewis' clever posts to boost McCain

Matt Lewis,

To quote Shakespeare, from "Hamlet";
"Matt Lewis doth protest too much, me thinks."
--------------------
Matt, it's obvious that since you're a perky cheerleader on behalf of John McCain, you're taking every opportunity you can to subtlely cast doubt on the campaigns of McCain's two chief rivals for the GOP nomination; Mitt Romney & Rudy Giuliani.
I will commend you, Matt, for finally focusing on the political aspects of this campaign, rather than using Romney's religion or Giuliani's marriages as wedge issues as you've cleverly done recently.

You began this post by posing the question,
"Why in the world would a campaign spend money on TV almost a year before any votes are cast?"

The answer is that both Giuliani & McCain have the advantage of having enjoyed national name recognition for many years---in fact, each has been the guest host of "Saturday Night Live" in recent years.
On the other hand, Mitt Romney is simply not well known on a national level, outside of political circles.

These TV ads are an opportunity to introduce voters to Romney, and increase his name recognition.
After all, Mitt doesn't have the Oprah Winfrey/mainstream media juggernaut which Barack Obama has to buoy his campaign.

You conclude this post by knocking down the Romney campaign's broadcasting of these ads so early in the race by stating, "But don't call it standard operating procedure."
But Matt, Romney's spokesman Kevin Madden did NOT suggest that this is "standard operating procedure."
You didn't technically quote Madden as having used those words, but the inference is certainly there, and it is nothing more than a straw man knock-down which you attempted.
Madden only stated that this is "the perfect time" to run ads---and considering that Romney is not well known among voters, it IS the perfect time to introduce himself with these TV ads.
It is dishonest of you to conflate "perfect time," with "standard operating procedure."

And Matt, your "Hail Mary" metaphor falls flat, suggesting you don't quite grasp its concept.
A "Hail Mary" pass is one which is thrown in desperation LATE in the 4th quarter of a football game.
By everyone's admission, this is very early in the game---and isn't that your whole thesis of the post ?

Matt, the truth is, you realize that Romney is likable and inspiring to those who become familiar with him. And as a McCain supporter, you fear Romney becoming more familiar to voters via these TV ads---that's why you've invested your energy in painting the ads as a "Hail Mary" desperation pass.
Thus, in an appropriate "Hamlet" context---you protest TOO much.

Matt, now if we could only convince you to write perusuasive posts trumping why you believe John McCain is the best GOP candidate, rather than more posts which cleverly attempt to subvert the momentum of Romney or Giuliani.

Romney just making a move
Sometimes when things are tight you must make a bold move to break the logjam. Romney has shown he can raise money, so I don't think that is a problem. The problem is "name id" he doesn't have it compared to Rudy or McCain. This is an attempt to get some voters to stop saying "who" after the pollster says Romney.

Re: Conversion
Worried about Romney's conversion and / or so-called flip-flopping? Check out this link:

The two documents there sure answered a lot of questions for me.

Romney Running to Right
Although Mitt Romney is an attractive candidate, he has some explaining to do to conservatives. Up until a few years ago he was avidly pro-abort and defended his position against those who questioned it. Now, he has apparently had a "conversion", at least on this issue, and says he is pro-life. Romney is a little old to be examining these life and death issues. He has risen up the political ranks, holding the pro-abort position. It seems politicians can change their deeply held views on serious issues, almost overnight. They all tack to the right, (even Democrats would, if they knew where right is), for the primaries and think they can fool enough people to get nominated, then govern the way they REALLY want. Romney could be the best nominee, but conservatives yearn for a candidate that has a consistent record and isn't afraid to proclaim it, consistently.

No open borders candidates
The Republican Party under GWB seems intent on political suicide. Pandering to citizens of other countries illegally in our country while telling us we must be vigilantes if we object to illegal aliens ignoring our borders and laws. Mel Martinez is there to ensure an open borders candidate in '08. The cheap labor express will be kept running, regardless of the consequences. GOP-RIP
