VDH on Rev. Wright
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 5:53 PM
Like every other talk show host, I will play the Jeremiah Wright clips on today's program.

Here is Victor Davis Hanson on the pastor's angry rhetoric.

Barack Obama provides an account of his meeting Rev. Wright in Dreams from my Father, as well as this brief bio on p. 282:

He had grown up in Philadelphia, the son of a Baptist minister.  he had resisted his father's vocation at first, joining the Marines out of college, dabbling with liquor, Islam, and black nationalism in the sixties.  But the call of his faith had apparently remained, a steady tug on his heart, and eventually he'd entered Howard, then the University of Chicago, where he spent six years studying for a Ph.D. in the history of religion.  He learned Hebrew and Greek, read the literature of Tillich and Niebuhr and the black liberation theologians.  Th anger and humor of the streets, the book learning and occasional twenty-five cent word, all this he had brought with him to Trinity almost two decades ago.  And although it was only later that I would learn much of his biography, it became clear in that very first meeting that, despite the reverand's frequent disclaimers, it was this capacious talent of his --this ability to hold together, if not reconcile, the conflicting strains of black experience-- upon which Trinity's success had ultimately been built.

Obama writes that the Reverand Wright warned him that association with him "isn't necessarily a feather in your cap," because "'[s]ome of my fellow clergy don't appreciatewhat we're about.  they feel like we're too radical.  Others, we ain't radical enough.  Too emotional. Not emotional enough.  Our emphasis on African history, on scholarship--"

"Some people say," I interrupted, "that the church is too upwardly mobile."

The reverand's smile faded.  "That's a lot of bull," he said sharply.  "People who talk that mess reflect their own confusion.  They've bought into the whole business of class that keeps us from working together.  half of 'em think that the former gang-banger or the former Muslim got no business in a Christian church.  Other half think that any black man with an education or a job, or any church that respects scholarship, is somehow suspect."

"We don't buy into these false divisions here.  It's not about income, Barack.  Cops don't check my bank account when they pull me over and make me spread-eagle against the car.  These miseducated brothers, like the sociologists at the University of Chicago, talking about  'the declining significance of race.'  Now, what country is he living in?"

A pastor's influence on a member of a congregation can be large or small, but Wright's impact on Obama has clearly been significant, and the pastor's ideas ought to be the subject of an extended public conversation with the candidate.

As I pointed out to Michael Gerson on today's program, when a candidate is discovered to belong to a club or organization that discriminates against women or minorities, he has to leave the club or the campaign.  He doesn't get to say that he disagrees with this policy or that rule and stay in the membership.  Senator Obama's church leadership has expressed very controversial positions, and he stayed a member through all those sermons on politics.  Isn't that like remaining a member of a whites-only golf club?

This is not, by the way, at all inconsistent with my strongly held  and often expressed that a candidate's religious views ought not to be subject of political debate, like Romney's Mormon beliefs.  I have no idea what Pastor Wright's theology is, but his politics are very radical, and they are legitimately an issue for the Obama campaign.

Wright's sermons are full of political positions that, if held by Senator Obama, will have an impact on the policies that President Obama

I am disappointed that this racism from Rev. Wright still exists in America and disturbed that Mr. Obama, a presidential candidate has Rev. Wright for his spiritual advisor, for over 20 years!!! And Michelle Obama should not have anything to be proud about being associated with people such as Rev. Wright in America.

Clarity...Oh, STOP ! You Boyos Are
having WAAAAAAYYYY too much fun at demure little fuzzball, Neo's expense.

OHM's right about the irony, though. Blovie missed a great old steak at the great old Smokehouse--across Olive from Warner Bros--where Bogey used to drink. Same wonderful cheesebread as when I started in Universal's Mailroom around the time the earth cooled. Assuring to know that a few things haven't been PC'd outta existence by California's Thought Police. Damn, no pictures on the horizon yet and doing VIGFM is wearing my a** out! Oh well, HIS schedule, NOT Neo's! But, y'know, sometimes I just wantta say,"Hey...FOCUS! What about ME? What about MY NEEDS?"

Yeah, that's when I hear that rumbling voice from the gorgeous tropical Central Florida Clouds, "And your question ISSSS???"

There's a wonderful old thing about the 5-ways God answers prayers: 1.)Yes. 2.)No. 3.)Wait. 4.)Maybe and 5.)You Gotta be SHI!!NG ME!"

Mine seems, right now, to be 3 & 4, and hopefully NOT 5!

OHM
You're killin' me.

I now have this visual of a frenetic and frazzled waitress. She's pulling her manager aside to compel him to call the police, whoever it takes to jettison this yahoo. Even more funny is this visual I have of our dear friend, Neo; elbows on the table, head in his hands, hair all tussled from the head-scratching, mind-numbing, hair-pulling lunch date he has so selflessly given himself to. Suddenly he realizes how these internet dating horror stories must be. He emerges from the restaurant depressed, sullen. In effect transference has taken on a whole new meaning for him. He's become, albeit briefly a manifestation of the very person sitting across from him.

"How did this happen, he asks himself?"
"I've unwittingly allowed this morose, muddle headed, maroon to invade my clear minded, free spirited nature."
"I'm such a giver. This should not be happening to me. I am calling Missus Neo right now to let her know that I am cutting short my otherwise long anticipated and pleasant trip to California."
And, there you have it. Wheeeeeeew! What a visual.

P.S.

Speaking of Newman & Woodward, I'm sure you've seen their on-screen chemistry in Martin Ritt's "The Long Hot Summer."

Neo,

Since Patriotic Perry Mason chickened out of asking 'tough and pointed' questions of Obama and Reverend Wrong, it would be humorously ironic if, at your lunch, Patriotic Perry Mason were to ask 'tough and pointed' questions of the waiter while ordering.

For instance, "Waiter, the menu says the beef sandwich comes with onions---but are the onions sliced, or diced ? And are those onions grilled ? And from where do you guys get your onions ? Are they locally grown ? And do the onion pickers belong to a union ? Can I get my ranch dressing on the side ? Why don't your restrooms have the air-dryers rather than paper towels ? Did you guys buy your salt shakers at Crate & Barrel ?"

and riveting--around '75-76, somewhere in there. And, Joanne Woodward's Oscar performance in, "The Three Faces of Eve" was brilliant. In a nice piece of 'insider' casting, in "Sybil", Ms.Woodward played Sally's Psychiatrist. Can you believe it...She and Paul have been married about 50 years!

Your cautionary note is well taken re-'our friend'and The Lunch. Maybe I should make it contingent on his taking his prescribed qt.beaker of Lithium BEFORE we order!

The Naval Gazing self-seriousness has become truly tiresome. I just don't 'Get' folks like that. These threads aren't--and shouldn't be--SERIOUS places, except very occassionally. (BTW, "Sybil" is the name of that movie from the 1970s about a woman with multiple personalities, right ? I've never seen it---just heard of it.)

Neo, keep in mind, when it looked like you might win the bet and he'd have to pay, Patriotic Sybil was working hard to downplay the trophy---he was angling to make it a "sandwich for lunch, with no expensive drinks" rather than the steak dinner with all the trimmings which you were offering.

And, so, you nailed it, OHM.

If anyone with a Brain-to-Reason and ears to listen has now heard Rev.Wright's sermon, after Obama's 'run for the presidency' announcement, and not thought(with variations),"What was Barack THINKING, keeping this fanatic close after his decision to run??" Pride goeth befo'de'fall, Bruthaaaa. Ooooops, had a Rev.Wright moment!

Clarity, Neo, Seehawk,

Our pal Patriotic Liberal wrote earlier in this thread;

"As I said at the outset, it is legit for us to talk about Rev. Wright and ask Barack some tough and pointed questions."

Unfortunately, Patriotic Liberal's unbridled enthusiasm for asking 'tough and pointed' questions of Obama and Wright ended...before he could get around to actually asking any of those questions.

Aw, and we were all looking forward to his Perry Mason moment.

So it is with that mutual admiration society between 'shriker and the Cubana Seehawk. 'Hawk, OHM, Neo...
Here's the gauge. Here's the degree to which it is expected, granted, desired to ask Obama questions of his faith, his church, his pastor's beliefs:

"Like I said, Barack will be able to answer these types of questions just fine--unlike your pal Mitt, who insisted on getting political credit for being a religious man while refusing to address on the content of that religion."

So----let's get on with asking Obama about the "content of his religion", as opined by a pathetic liberal.
Let's get on with asking him about this persistent declaration of allegiance to, "Africa" that "reverend" jeremiah espouses. Hey, Mr. Obama, what's up with that? Your church, your pastor, your spiritual message as delivered regularly by the Big Cheese?
I pledge allegiance, to Africa, for all it stands for, all that it offers, for all it promises....
Yep, that's my question, well after the, reconciliation for, "GOD DAMN AMERIKA".
And U.S. KKK A.
And all of those other cutesy little political platitudes, which bring about a cacaphony of "AMEN's" from the congregation. All those, "Yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyaaaaahhhhhhhh's".All that, AFFIRMATION. All that, CONFIRMATION. From the congregation, as they become euphoric, in their aroused state of Africa, er, affirmation.
clarityseeker writes: Friday, March, 14, 2008 6:50 PM
'Hawk
He's a tortured individual.
He's a very conflicted bloke as well.
Self-admitted.

Repeatedly.

Time and time again.

Redundantly.

It "cleanses his soul" to be, just ask him.

It's his favorite, "state of being". In some ways, it's his religion---all that confusion, chaos, conflict. Everything kinda tossed up in the air---only himself to ultimately make sense of it all. Well, you know, with a good deal, alot of help from the Boomer-Lib prof's he's cherished, honored, sidled up to throughout his humble existence.

But, hey, I don't want to distort what he's stated. Who am I to bear false witness to his chatter.

One Final Thought:

His is the sophomoric philosophy of:
If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to give witness to this, does it make a sound?

Here is his version:

"How can a pastor hate America when it is clear that God has shed His Grace on Her? And how can that pastor possibly be yours?"

God Graced Amerika
Pastor must grace Amerika too---given that pastor is delivering this same word of God--right?

(hold it------If not, you still have a safety valve in this philosophy of convenience)

If pastor is really serious about pastor's message, well then, the pastor is to be laughed at---unless of course, you have followed him for 20+ years. Unless you have had the same pastor marry you and your wife. Unless, of course, you had tongue-tying trouble in distancing yourself from same pastor whilst debating your competitor on national t.v.

I mean, that is some revolutionary cranial provocation of the very deepest degree (his word-of-the-day is "psychobabble". And the aforementioned is a pretty damned good example of same).

I think, before I go out and "DAMN AMERIKA", I think I'll go sit a spell and play with my navel while pondering, GOD, pastor, message, conflict, confusion, query, reconciliation, confusion, conflict, query----hey, where'd that pink lint come from?

response to my friend, One Hot Minute,
Indeed.
And how telling is this anger, directed at me?
I posit that it is, yet another, expression of his transference.
Rather than focus on a presidential candidate's deep, very deep committment to a church that is clearly generating and fomenting hate, anger, resentment, etc., his sites are set on others (read, me).
Frightening as it is to you, OHM, and me, it reveals volumes in a person's character, in this case PL+LP's, that he would eschew any attention to the source of this story. It portends an inner conflict, far too complex for mere mortals.

Dems have understandably undergone immense stress over thi past 18+ month period:
1.) They wove a fantastic (smoke-and-mirrors) story of the, "Culture of Corruption" and realized successes in 2006 elections
2.) Dems beat the drum of, "Failure in Iraq" so loud, so resolute, that it now haunts them with the successes being felt there now.
3.) General "Betrayus" was a slap in their collective face.
4.) Mired in this "re-vote", "do-over", "re-do", "what-do-we-do-now" scenario has their pinheads whirling, reeling, spinning out of control. All, of course, brought on themselves.
5.) All of this "race-baiting" going on in the "democratic" process within their own party is damaging, to be sure.
6.) The Governor of New York and his escapades--need I say more----impeccable timing.
7.) Reverend Wright's "Church of Hate" and the dedication paid to it by their frontrunner prez' candidate---OUCH!!!

It all spells one word, G-A-V-I-S-C-O-N. Or, multiples of Rolaids. Slurps of Pepto Bismol. Whatever their choice of poison.

Back to transference. It is much easier for them to lash out at something within their reach, conservatives like me, rather than face the uncontrollable variables of disappointment, dismay, confusion, chaos, in their beloved party.

Silent moment.

Clarityseeker,

I think our pal Patriotic Liberal is more outraged at you than at the fact that the probable nominee of his party looks to a spiritual advisor who believes America is evil.

I'd also add that Patriotic Liberal and blueinredcity sound confused about what we object to.
We are not objecting to Reverend Wright's 'theology' or 'doctrine.'
This is much different from when the evangelicals were making silly challenges about Mitt Romney's Mormon religion.

Rather, we object to Reverend Wright's political rants and his characterization of America as a bad country which deserves God's damnation.

What does it reveal about Obama that both his spiritual advisor and wife think so poorly of America ?
Those two people may be the two most imfluential people currently in Senator Obama's life.

can't defend the indefensible
It is somewhat amusing to read the comments on this blog, all assuming that there is something the BHO can actually say, truthfully, in defense of the statements of his "pastor" or his position.

When he repudiated, rejected, whatever, Mr Ferrakan, he only mentioned his 'anti-semitic" statements. Not the anti-white, anti-American statements.

The people of this country need to realize that he was a radical activist and still is. He is smart enough to hide it all and preach his "salvation" of not only the US but the world.

He has no standing to be commander-in-chief of the USA. I can only believe that he is a bigot or the worst form of politician that would use his race to gain every advantage he can, from his education to is current seat in the US Senate.

He is not teaching
Theology, but just ranting on his own personal beleifs like Ferrakan and Jesse Jackson. It sure seems like alot of African Americans who say they are not racists are using a race card, how hypocritical is that? Now a man like Matin Luther King had great visions, and was assinated fror his beleifs, was a martyar.

Believe me, chump, "envy" ain't what I feel towards you. Pity is more like it. I'd hate to be your sorry you-know-what. Tortured and tangled and self-arrested--phew! And now you are posturing as Oprah Winfrey or something. Jeez, it is a sign of the times that the psychobabble these days is coming from the Right.

Anyone here ...
actually ever attended a UCC church? They don't have a "theology" and they barely have beliefs. They are exceeded in mushiness only by the Unitarians.

Anyone who suggests that you can worship at the same church for over 20 years and not be influenced by what you hear is a liar.

But why are we surprised by any of this? Has anyone bothered to check Obama's background at all? Maybe wandered around Punahou and Manoa and traced some of his early life?

I know he is the Messiah, is above question and reproach, and apparently akin to the
Second Coming, but don't we deserve something more than "We are Change." WTF does that mean, anyway?

Patronizing Liberal
Envy is a very ugly behavior---and matches the rest of your profile.

Yeah, call me "shrinker". Much more creative than that poor excuse of humor-infused name-calling you attempt. Shrinker, got it?

Now go back to your self-involved, self-centered little life; hovel you retreat to.

you would not know clarity if it hit you over the head with a ball peen hammer. And, that is why you are so satisfied with your existing in a constant state of self-conflict. pathetic.
DirkBelig writes: Thursday, March, 13, 2008 8:58 PM
The simple test...
Whenever I want to check if a statement of racial grievance has any merit, I substitute the word "white" for whatever group is speaking to see how it sounds. If it sounds ridiculous, then the argument fails.

Imagine if John McCain attended a church with a pastor who ranted about how the "dark-skinned Jews" killed Jesus and how white people are beset on all sides by predatory black people. You would be able to hear the howls of outrage and demands for McCain to quit running for President all the way thru the vacuum of space on the surface of the Moon.

Because the Obamessiah is exempt from any question that might be construed as unkind, he will not be held to account for his attendance and financial support of a church that preaches bigotry and hate.

I'm sure somewhere, Trent Lott is wondering, "WFT?!?"

It looks like 'shrieker has become a shrink--what with all the talk about "transference." And what incisive commentary! Wondering about the disparity between Wright's "ignorant tongue" and "his mother-tongue," even though Barack told us the man had a vast education.

Oh, and don't forget the insults about how "pathetic" we are. Man, 'shrieker, you sure know how to deal a death blow.

One thing is for sure: a little honest self-conflict is a mile better than false clarity..

Hate Speech
This hateful bile is going to scare the you know what out of white America.

Who does Obama think he is to talk about hope, reconciliation and healing after he spends 20 years listening to this? Does he think we are all fools?

Obama is not going to be the next President. I will take Hillary any day over anyone associated with Wright.

Blueinredcty, No Pass For Obama
Blueinredcty, I was nearly amused by your attempted humor in "the Vatican was going run the White House from Rome." I think it was 48 years ago, not 46.

You have been hoodwinked into thinking that the issue with Wright is one of religion. That's just the mindset that the Obama camp wants you to have. You've been bamboozled.

Even if it was an issue of religion, which it is not, John F. Kennedy set the standard by hitting the issue squarely and unequivocally. Obama lets others weasel for him. Obama does not have the courage of conviction to meet the Kennedy standard, which he set for himself.

John F. Kennedy was pro-active and held an extensive news conference, where he faced a no-holds-barred grilling from those concerned about the influence of the Church on Kennedy's ability to govern as President.

I remember that news conference, it wasn't a subdued chat with Russert or Matthews. I even found a link to it to refresh your memory, if you were old enough to be aware of it in the first place.

See: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/jfkhoustonministe rialQ&A.htm

You're welcome.

Obama must confront this issue head-on, in a pro-active way, using an open, no-holds-barred press conference, in the Kennedy model.

Wright's theology is far more explosive and divisive than the theology of Catholism could ever be. Wright's theology espouses separation by race, black exclusivity, and slavery reparations.

Those issues really aren't theological or religious in nature, so your allusion to the Kennedy flap is off-point.

Obama owes it to every American to step up and explain his positions on race, separatism, black liberation theology, Wright's anti-white statements, Wright's flouting of the law, and, of course, the influence of Wright's ongoing demands for slavery reparations.

If he doesn't, then he is unworthy of governing this country.

"reverend" wright?
For us white people who feel no degree of overwhelming guilt for things we did not do, our fathers did not do, for things our grandfathers did not do, to bring about vitriol and hate-America diatribes, the likes of reverend wright, where is Shelbey Steele when you need him?

Also, I listened to you read from Barack Obama's book, Hugh. I heard you read about Barack's narrative on reverend wright's vast education, fluency in several foreign languages. I have one question:
Where the hell did he come up with the ignorant tongue? He spoke as if he had little grasp of his mother-tongue. Either that, OR, he did a damn good job polishing up that down-home, back-woods back-slappin' black sapp'n drawl. He grew up in Philly? They don't speak like that in Philly either----unless they went directly from elementary school to a life on the streets. Polished, very polished, indeed.

No wonder pathetic liberals are so conflicted about who they are, while the democrat party caters, and kow-tows, and patronizes this behavior from blacks. No wonder pathetic liberals practice so skillfully that concept of tranference. They've been trained very, very well.

Pathetic.

redemptive clause:
At least this reverend actually has a church. Unlike other floor-flushers, such as "reverend" Al Sharpton and "reverend" Jesse Jackson.

Pathetic.

Obama Is No JFK
Clearly, Obama injects race into the election, through his surrogates, Wright and Farrakhan, each donning a First Amendment protective cloak.

Non-blacks (like Ferraro) are set ablaze for uttering any word contorted to be a racist "code word," or for making some remark that is an indirect, and not totally inaccurate, characterization of race in the election. Oh, cracker! How dare you use race!

Wright openly preaches a gospel of white hatred, black separatism, and slavery reparations. Wright is the leader of a "megachurch.” Churchgoers, including Barack Obama, are drawn to, and influenced by, Wright’s preachings.

Wright is the man who inspired Obama to become Christian. Wright is Obama's spiritual mentor. This is more than mere association. It is *affinity*.

Had Obama not embraced Wright's divisive, racist teachings, he simply could have attended a different church. Obama chose TUCC because of Wright.

It is reasonable to infer that Obama has (1) adopted at least some of Wright's belief system to be converted to Christianity; and (2) embraced Wright's beliefs on black separatism and slavery reparations.

John F. Kennedy was pro-active and held an news conference, where he faced a no-holds-barred grilling, about the influence of the Church on Kennedy's ability to govern as President.

Wright's theology is explosive and divisive, so Obama owes it to every American to explain his positions on black separatism, slavery reparations, and Wright’s impact on Obama's political and social beliefs.

Obama must confront this issue proactively, just like John F. Kennedy. He won't, however, because Barack Hussein Obama is *not* a John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Hugh is right about this..
It is right to talk about a candidate's pastoral influences--and backers, for that matter. Clowns like Hagee, for instance. But I also think theology is fair game. I don't want a guy in office, making life and death decisions for my children, who believes in ridiculous things.
Jess writes: Thursday, March, 13, 2008 7:53 PM
A candidates religion
The second to last paragraph is nonsense. A candidate's religious beliefs should be central to a voter's evaluation of that person. We shouldn't prevent people from running, based on their religion. However, we should have a BIG problem if the teachings of their religion would lead the country in the wrong direction.

Whatever a person worships will determine their worldview. Their worldview will determine their choices. Their choices will determine what we have to live with as citizens.

It's not clear that Obama's church worships Christ, as Christ doesn't appear central to their message. It seems that what they do worship is upward mobility (money) and intellectualism.... classic Secular Humanism. A Secular Humanist will always see the solution to the world's problems as being money, dialogue and cultural sensitivity. They turn a blind eye to the intractable presence of sin in the human heart and man's propensity towards evil if given the right circumstances and opportunity. Secular Humanists get it wrong every time in knowing how to approach the world's greatest problems. They don't understand that some players on the world stage only understand displays of strength.

Don't Touch That Mouse
The Obamessiah gets to play by special rules that apply only to The Chosen One, and Wright gets a pass because angry blacks stuck in a 60's time warp are "keeping the dream alive".

The cognitive dissonance you are experiencing as you observe the entertaining implosion of the Democratic Party is not the fault of signals broadcast from a special chip the CIA installed in your computer and keyed to hughhewitt. Really.
