Vanity Fair and Sarah Palin
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 3:53 PM
There are only two reasons that come to mind why Todd Purdum might have written the nasty little hit piece on Sarah Palin for Vanity Fair:

(1) This is red meat to the coastal elites (and wannabees) to which the magazine panders.

(2) Liberals continue to be afraid of Palin as a potential candidate.

The piece only makes sense if the underlying motivation is #1.  Otherwise, it's a strategic blunder of the first order.  I've had some disagreements with Governor Palin in the past -- for example, the way she handled Bristol Palin's pregnancy.

But any lingering doubts or disagreements any Republican might have with the Governor become irrelevant when one reads the assemblage of snippy innuendo, predictable negative-insider-quotes and the elitist, snobbish tone of pretention that underpins the entire piece.

And there's reason to believe that it' s not just Republicans like me who feel this way.  It will be interesting -- when or if Governor Palin once again becomes a legitimate target of the national political media -- to see the extent to which normal people understand that "elite media's" contempt and condescension for Palin is the same contempt and condescension such "journalists" feel for regular Americans like them.

P.S. Anyone note the irony in Purdum's breathless announcement that "what [Palin] wants the public to know about herself doesn’t always jibe with reality"?  Hellooo -- ever heard of a Chicago pol named Barack Obama?  More generally, for what politician does this banal observation not hold true?

No one is worried about republican's supporting palin, the hardcore conservatives are the ones who love her. The main crux of her electoral futures rest on her being able to branch that support over to independents who rejected her in '08

did you even read the article, or did you just see enough other people write about the article that you didn't feel you had too?

The Myth of Palin Fear
Naturally, Liebau has to introduce the standard conservative myth that "Liberals continue to be afraid of Palin as a potential candidate."

No, liIberals are fascinated and repelled by the thought that any bloc of voters in this country would favor such an obviously ridiculous candidacy. If the few remaining wise elders in the GOP can't stop that from that happening, all the better for the left.

"an obviously ridiculous candidacy"
You mean like Barack Obama's?
LOOK AT THIS RIDICULOUS CANDIDATE!
No executive experience whatsoever.
Won his first two elections not on issues or competence, but by getting his opponenets kicked off the ballot!
Voted "present" when he didn't want to make hard choices.
Voted against the Born Alive Infants Protection Act.
Went to a church headed by a racist reverend for 20 years.
Associated with a domestic terrorist, William Ayers
Associated with ACORN
Won't release Columbia records
Picked Joe Biden as a running mate!

But... a combination of massive voter fraud (thanks to ACORN), media negligence (thanks NBC, ABC, MSNBC, CBS!)and enough people ignorant of history, cultural issues and economics helped get him elected anyway!

To Don't Tread On Me
Could you be more specific about Obama "getting his opponents kicked off the ballot" in Illinois? I live and vote here, have done since long before Obama entered politics, read the Trib daily, watch local news twice a day, and I don't have the faintest idea what you're talking about. Are you possibly referring to Jack Ryan? Because if you are, did Obama make Ryan drive his wife to sex clubs and demand that she have intercourse with him in front of a crowd? Multiple times? As she cried and refused? Again and again? Because the scandal about Ryan's sexual kinkiness is what got him thrown off the ballot---this was a HUGE scandal here. And did Obama then waterboard the Illinois GOP until they agreed not to run ANY Illinois Republican against Obama for the Illinois Senate, but to bring in (sob, gulp) Alan Keyes (from Maryland), who could not have made more of an a** of himself here if he had streaked naked down Michigan Avenue, details on request?

I agree with you that God made an enormous gift to Obama with all of this, but there is no logical way of saying Obama got either of these opponents thrown off the ballot, in fact Obama beat Keyes 70%-30%, the biggest margin in Illinois history. During that campaign I was all over Chicago going to estate sales and yard sales and there was an Obama sign in nearly every window in town---he was enormously popular with rich and poor, black and white. Your suggestion that Obama's Illinois wins were crooked is nonsense.

Because we love to read that the far right sees her as a viable candidate for anything beyond usher in a movie theater? Because we love to make fun of her, she is so dumb. Now, given that the good citizens of MN elected Franken, anything COULD happen, but seriously, Sarah would be manna from heaven for the left. Do you realize that McCain, had he picked someone with gravitas instead of a pageant smile, might have won that election? Instead, McCain showed his contempt for his country by nominating that ninny, Palin, and lost lots and lots of votes in swing areas. No, of course you don't know that, because you wouldn't have voted for McCain had he not picked the ninny who is 'just like you'.

Let me ask you this question--if someone like Sarah were head of the PTA, and she's just like you, that's what you think we need to lead our great nation? If so, you're sillier than you seem.

Bring Caribou Barbie on. Tina Fey's daughter needs college tuition, and Palin is the gift that keeps on giving for us on the left.

SHHHH! It's the way God works!
Don't tell the elitist humanist about this.

God uses the foolish things to confound the wise.

"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent".

"The foolishness of God is wiser than men; the weakness of God is stronger than men".

Sarah Palin is a solid Christian. This is the source of the hatred and mockery from the humanistic liberal pols and media.

How do you explain the qualifications of Barney Frank, Joe Biden, Al Franken, Jimmy Carter, and the Amazing Hillary, Feinstein, Boxer, and Pelosi as superior to Gov. Palin?

A person who is dependent upon a prayer answering God is vastly more qualified to lead(look in your American history books) than a self reliant, arrogant, know-it-all humanist.

Ben Franklin, who was no devout Christian, knew this much.

She is a casual type and that's a good thing. By the way, she has read so many things there wasn't time to mention them all so why promote just one or two as time only allowed? I mean, how could you criticize Obama as being "an empty suit," and yet push Sarah?

That is becoming more and more obvious as each month passes. John McCain ran a weak campaign and was going nowhere fast until Gov.,Palin rescued his losing campaign. the courageous naming of sources:

- Palin’s supporters in the Republican establishment
-Some of her handlers
-One person familiar with the situation
-a range of people from the McCain-Palin campaign, including members of the high command
-one person who occasionally advises Palin

Why does no one have the balls to come out and use their name? Is it because - no - can't be - because they are afraid that Sarah Palin actually might win if she runs? Or is it because they fear having to actually prove their allegations?

Palin/Obama on the international front
Lilly writes: "The thought of the harm she (Palin) could do with such shenanigans on the international front is truly frightening."

Has Lilly even considered the harm Obama has already done with his shenanigans on the international front? Does she not find it truly frightening that he sides with our enemies and distances our nation from our staunchest allies?

Does she approve of former constitutional law lecturer Obama criticizing the Honduran military for ousting a president who flouted the Honduran supreme court rulings on his illegal attempt to keep power for a third term?

Does she approve that he is siding on this issue with Chavez of Venezuela and Raul of Cuba? Has she not noticed that the "military coup" is most unusual in that the military there did not take control? The man in charge now is the one the constitution says should be next in line when the president cannot serve. So Obama thinks the U.S. should side with a far left leaning president who was using Chavez's tactics to grab power illegally. AGAINST THE RULING of that nation's supreme court!!! And she is musing over what PALIN might do?

President Sarah Heath Palin
Palin haters, chew on this:

- Governor Palin has 17 years of political experience, having held elective and appointed office since 1992
- Governor Palin has managed a business and worked in the real world. Her husband continues to work rather than live off the taxpayer teat
- Palin is a person that most Americans can identify with, hence the extreme, illogical hatred from the poltical & elitist left/media and Rockefeller/corporate right. She's simply not a Washington insider or someone who wants to control others. She has raised a family, dealt with contentious family issues, has a son serving in the military, and deals with everyday issues just like you and me.
- Had Palin not been chosen for VP, McCain would have lost in a landslide.
- Republicans lost because they have become just like Democrats. Hence the media always promoting "moderate" Republicans and the Dems giving Republicans "advice" that they need to be more "inclusive" to win. Governor Palin rejects these false premises, which explains her huge popularity among conservatives and visceral hatred among the left/country-club right.
- Governor Palin got to where she is today with no handouts, no pro-feminist legislation, no NOW, no whining...she truly is a throwback to America of yesteryear, when you had to pull yourself up by the bootstraps in this nation.
- And finally, Governor Palin is staunchly pro-life and pro-Christian, and you can scream that she's "anti-choice" until you're blue in the face, but unlike squishy Republicans she is not going to compromise her beliefs to attend Washington's cocktail elitist parties and that really drives the left/media/country club right insane.

President Sarah Palin indeed!
Sarah Palin is the top choice for Republican “moderates”, yeah that’s right Sarah Palin surprises all by being the top choice of GOP “moderates" and not just conservatives in the GOP according to the Public Policy Poll released today.

You can find it here:

http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2009/06/palin-moder ate-choice.html

“One interesting fact within our national poll looking at the 2012 Presidential picture last week: Sarah Palin is the most popular potential candidate with moderate Republicans.

61% have a favorable opinion of her to 53% for Mitt Romney, 50% for Mike Huckabee, and 44% for Newt Gingrich.

She's generally thought of as the darling of the conservative wing of the party- and she's the most popular there too as 83% view her positively to 79% for Huckabee, 77% for Gingrich, and 69% for Romney- but it may come as a surprise that she's tops with moderates as well.”

A new Pew Poll also has very good news for Sarah Palin:

http://people-press.org/report/524/republican-favorability

Among Republicans, however, the balance of opinion about Palin is more positive than it is
regarding Romney or other leading GOP figures, Newt Gingrich and Michael Steele. More than seven-in-ten Republicans (73%) express a favorable opinion of Palin while just 17% have an unfavorable opinion. Romney, Gingrich and especially Steele are less familiar figures – among the public overall and Republicans – than is Palin. While comparable percentages of Republicans rate Palin and the other Republicans unfavorably, far more view Palin favorably. And Palin continues to be overwhelmingly popular with key parts of the GOP base – white evangelical Republicans (84% favorable) and conservative Republicans (80% favorable).

It's interesting to read the comments from the left on Sarah Palin. They continually insist that she is a rediculous, buffoon and that they hope upon hope that the GOP will run her in 2012 so they can, again, slaughter her and expose her for the idiot she is. Oh yeah, and some of the the really brave ones, expose their scared impotence by saying they only make fun of her because she's hot.

Let's face it. At the end of the day, those negatively, infatuated with her, hate her because she didn't kill her baby. They just can't fathom that someone would make a principled decision even knowing the decision would result in a more challenged life.

To them, principle is nothing. It's all about the cool factor. Obama is cool, hip, nothing else matters. Not substance, not integrity, not honesty. These people would vote for anyone cool. Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Cameron Diaz...any of these people would get their vote.

But Palin is the opposite of cool. Yet, how many of those who ridicule her have successfully ran for Mayor. Or Governor of a state. It's just juvenile bedroom/computer emoting.

Luckily, these people are in the minority...just as the fanatical fans of Palin on the right are. Most reasonable people on both sides view her as obviously unequipped, when thrown into the limelight this time. We also are smart enough to know that she will learn and grow from that experience and anyone who doesn't recognize her raw and intuitive skills and her ability to draw people towards her are fooling themselves.

Vitriolic fanatics on the left do themselves harm by unreasonably and viciously attacking her. It will never convert a single fence sitting voter to their side. It will only give Palin greater sympathy among the reasonable and convince people disgusted with the left's attacks to consider her.

Limbaugh on Palin part 2
"Forty percent of the people of this country identify themselves as "conservative." Twenty-one percent identify themselves as liberal. This is why I closed the program on Friday telling you I still have faith. I still have faith in the people of this country -- and if you look at the campaign of 2008, the 40% of the American people who were conservative had nobody to vote for! And if the Republican Party keeps up, they're not going to offer anybody to vote for. And that's why the left is so scared to death of Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin excites this 40% of Americans that are conservatives. Of course, the blue-blood, country club, Rockefeller Republicans and the media and the Democrats make fun of her and say that she's a dunce and she doesn't have any experience, she's uninformed and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But all you have to do...

If you want to know, the left will tell you everything you want to know, if you listen to them. The far left, the left, the Democrat Party will tell you everything you want to know. And I just need to ask you one question. Of all the potential Republican presidential candidates that people could name for 2012, which one sends the Democrat Party, the media, the Comedian Community, and everybody else into an absolute insane tizzy? It is Sarah Palin. Why? Because they're scared. And why are they scared? They're afraid of her. They're afraid of that 20,000 people she can draw anywhere, any time, when she shows up to make an appearance. They're afraid of her because she can win. They're afraid of her because she could beat Barack Obama. That's why they trash her. That's why they're trying to destroy her. It's not because she embarrasses them. It's because she frightens them. Listen to the left, listen to the media if you want to find out what they think 'cause they'll tell you every time."

not speak up and defend the woman who left EVERYTHING on the spur of the moment to go our and help him with his campaign when he was drowning in his own failure? I never thought much of him but now I think even less.

Kudos Brian you got it right. Go Palin!
The misinformed Palin nay'sayers underestimate the strong, bright Lady Sarah. She is too hot for them to handle, Ha! Some people don't know a good thing when they have it! Gov., Palins successful past history and behavior deserves credit and respect. The biased, unfair, one eyed Lib/Dems just show their ignorance and hostility and bring discredit upon themselves, not upon her! Ex Democrat

Sigh.
I guarantee you, despite the fantasy Rush Limbaugh is trying to feed you, the Democratic Party brain trust is not trembling in fear, having war room meetings or pulling out all their heavy artillery to combat Sarah Palin. "Scared to death," he says. Really? Really? She can draw a rabid fringe crowd. So can Paris Hilton!

You know who IS formidable on the Republican side? Newt Gingrich. Because he's smart, he's an intellectual, he has actual ideas, and he speaks with knowledge and gravitas. (I'm not endorsing him... I despise him.) All good reasons why you will not nominate him. "Let's nominate Sarah! She's purdy, and she's just like us!"

The mere fact that you draw a comparison to a major political figure and an uneducated slimmy, skkaannkk, hollowood moron, shows that you are a jewel of ignorance.
