Obama and Buyers' Remorse
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 8:14 AM
Senator Obama looked terrible last night --halting and apologetic, constantly on the defensive even though Gibson and Stephanopoulos did not press him beyond a follow-up or two on his most damaging associations with Pastor Wright and William Ayers.

Perhaps the moderators felt sorry for Obama, because his stumbling answers displayed none of the skill for which he has been widely proclaimed as the best stump speaker in a generation.

Chris Cillizza framed the choice before PA Democrats this way:  "It is not, fundamentally, a choice about issues or even ideology -- it is a choice about approach."

Cillizza is a smart guy, but he is watching a different race than I am.  Obama was fumbling for answers because he knows his politics and associations are from the far left edge of American politics.  He was in a tough place last night because for the first time he was gently pressed on his politics up until 2004.

Clinton is an old line liberal, a big spending lefty with some radical in her, but too much the ambitious climber-of-the-ladder to have ever gotten too close to a Wright or an Ayers (though there are Rezkos galore in her past.)

Pennsylvania voters got a glimpse of what is ahead if they push Obama over the top:  A candidate on the defensive about his identity as a thorough-going man of the hard left who can no more disguise his politics than he can his height.

Obama makes George McGovern look moderate.  But Democrats are almost certainly stuck with him.

Obama looks and sounds like a bag of rattling bones. Perhaps people need to keep digging around to find what skeletons are in his closet.

Fade In..
Exterior- Cave Entrance in the Far Reaches of the Hindu Kush or Karakoram Range. Well armed jihadists guard the entrance...as we..

Interior- Luxurious digs of Osama bin Laden. We see that the spacious comforts are outfitted with all the Sheik luxury accessesories like dialysis machines, etc..

Close on Osama...He's dictating into an ancient tape-to-tape player as we see the reels winding...

Osama(Dictating)

..and THE most important part of our November 2004 Fatwah is that we must bring greater pressure to bear on the American Crusaders. My thinking here, Zawahiri, my friend, is that IF we increase our fatwahs and attacks, then our friend, The Evil Booooosh, will win the American election. As you know, we've admired the way he dispensed with our enablers and protectors of the Taliban. He's killing thousands of our fighters and recently put a smart bomb up the kiester of or friend Sheik Zarkawi in Iraq. Therefore, we do not want the empty Infidel Girly Man, Kerry, to win. He's not worthy of our warriors and would run. Booooosh will keep us in these dandy caves and continue to kill our brothers and hunt us like dogs. Okay...Ayman my Brother, I've got to spend a few hours on the Infidel Blood contraption..But you get my drift...Re-Elect Booooosh!

Neo....
On second thought, what if he's right about "false clarity"?
What if........what if, this clarity he found in OBL's intervening and warning Americans not to vote for Bush, is the sort of "false clarity" he referes to?
I mean, it is possible. You know it is, Neo.

Of course, that means if he was right---and we have found evidence of "false clarity", right there in his own thought process------why, it would make the over arching premise of his argument to you, WRONG! That means, OBL's involvement would have actually had the reverse effect---and DECREASED Bush's vote. And, he would not have known that. And that, in fact, would have confirmed the man as stupid. You see?
It's all very clear---in a "false clarity" supposition.
clarityseeker writes: Sunday, April, 20, 2008 11:38 PM
Neo...
This maroon, PL, his own conscience betrays the games he plays with posters.

Case in point:

He earlier blathered on about some lame (being very kind) lecture about truth preceding clarity. He referred to one of these, "universal absolutes" on another thread as well.

However, his betrayal is just above in the way he expresses himself to you---about one of his perceived "truths"; a very telling lens into the soul, indeed.
Just above, at 11:05 PM, he finds it comfortably necessary, to predicate what he knows, what he considers truth, by using the term, "clearly":

He says,
"Neo, as for the OBL argument, just try to get your mind around it. It is not too complex. Clearly, by intervening and warning Americans NOT to vote for Bush, he was going to INCREASE Bush's vote. You don't think he knew that? What, do you think the man is stupid?"

Neo----my point is simple.
He's attempting vigorously to persuade you with one of his own perceived truths---by doing so, he underscores its (precedent) foundation by describing it as, "clearly".
(As I have said, clarity before truth)
Hence, he found it necessary to establish clarity to determine his own version of truth.
Deductive, yes.
However, the path he takes is clearly betraying the dishonesty of his earlier claim that truth precedes clarity---and somesuch "false clarity" crapola.

Neo, this is not fun anymore; as you've known, he's always been transparently confused. You and I have, at times, taken the challenge to prove it as such. What more is there with this shell of a Liberalized person?
I ask you, Neo. Is not our work done? Yet?
Patriotic Liberal writes: Sunday, April, 20, 2008 11:05 PM

Now CS is affecting concern for those who come into daily contact with me. What a clown. And an insulting one at that.

Neo, as for the OBL argument, just try to get your mind around it. It is not too complex. Clearly, by intervening and warning Americans NOT to vote for Bush, he was going to INCREASE Bush's vote. You don't think he knew that? What, do you think the man is stupid? If he is so stupid, then why has it taken more than six years to catch him? He knows very well Americans hate him and are not rushing to do what he says. Quite the opposite.

There is nothing too complex about the thought process. OBL likes Bush because as long as Bush is there, pursuing his dopey policies, OBL will find open ears and new recruits.

Hey, chump,
You ridiculed the insight that OBL is more afraid of Barack than Bush or McCain, but you didn't dispense with it.

These guys aren't afraid to die, and when you are that fanatical, you are not necessarily opposed to the guy who is starting wars against your (potential) constituency. I understand it is thinking that requires two steps instead of one, but just as Bush has benefited politically from Osama, Osama has benefited politically from Bush. Which is why he delivered that ad for Bush in the final days of the November 2004 campaign. Or are you just a waif who thinks Osama earnestly thought he could influence American voters?

Yes We're Bitter. But Why?
What happened to the message of "Hope and Change"? I think it is dead and BO killed it. His false promises have filled people with sense of doom and gloom, not hope and change. Where is the hope in telling people that they live in a crappy country?

Just think about this, BO's pastor is building a $1.6 million dollar house, with a $10,000,000 dollar line of credit, in a 98% white development. Kind of funny for a men that rants adjust "rich white people".

Some people will ask why does this matter? It matters because, BO used this anti-American, racist preacher to advance his political career. I feel BO didn't attend TUCC for the preaching. He told us all, that he never heard Rev. Wright's offending words and I believe him. But I also believe that BO worked closely with Rev. Wright to gain the street cred to get elected to the State and Federal levels.

What bothers me is that BO used far left pols to move along in the system. The same people that hate our way of life. If you were wondering where the "bitter" remark came from, it came from BO's orbit of friends. The far left looks down on us because we don't understand that they are here to save us from ourselves. So they get frustrated when we "cling to our guns and religion," instead of turning our futures over to them.

Hope and Change
Hope and change are inspirational to many people. When they are uttered by the empty suit of Obama they are JUST WORDS.

When I hear them coming from the pope, they are understood and become living words.

There are many many things unknown about Obama, his relationships with shady characters, his beliefs, and his understanding of America. Personally, he scares me.

Democrats Under Duress Nominate Obama.
Blacks associate with Obama because he says he is Black, and all Blacks have been discriminated against in some way. Here are the facts: Obama cannot claim any link to slavery unless his Mother's family owned some. His Father is from Kenya, born and raised there, no slave link through him. Obama is a product of Affirmative Action, that is discrimination for Obama against others. He got a degree from Harvard--that is highly sought after in the Socialist/Communist world, where he lives. He was raised in Hawaii, there was never a "colored" or "white" water fountain there. No lunch counters off limits and no move to the back of the bus. Hawaii was not a state during the civil war and was not involved. Obama is Black by choice, has no slavery link, has discriminated against others by plan, and he is a Communist. Blacks have more in common with Southern Whites than with Obama. He will be nominated through duress in an effort to keep the peace.

I would suggest everyone tell their friends to read Barone's excellent article. This one, as is unfortunately true of much of Hewitt's postings, is almost embarassingly blinded by his own bias (just look back at some of his posts about Romney a few months ago for example), and is basically written to make people who already dislike Obama feel good. To persuade people, you need to write a more thoughtful article like Barone's. Remember, Obama has almost 1.5 million donors and 35,000 people showed up to see him in Philly last night.

The other--and FAR funnier--swill that Blovie's selling this a.m., elsewhere at HH, is that Osama bin Laden is terrified of Barack Hussein Obama.

**A momentary aside. I have a wonderful bumper sticker preserved from the 2004 campaign that says:"10 Out of 10 Terrorists Agree:ANYBODY BUT BUSH!"**

That's gotta be a FIRST! Not even the most tiresome, brain deprived Lefty Trolls around here have claimed that one. Barack has reatedly announced--reaffirmed Wednesday night in the debate--that he intends to RETREAT in Ignominious DEFEAT in the face of the Enemy in Iraq. I'm entirely convinced, as well, that he's planning to do the same in Afghanistan. Can't talk about that one, though. So, The Bloviator, summoning those sharp-awesome powers of critical thinking, has concluded that Bin Laden & Zawahiri are praying for a McCain victiory, so that he can continue killing thousands of al Qaeda Sewage like the Hated Boooosh has done for 6 1/2 years. You and your lackeys in the corporate media have had your way with the body politic for decades. Now, without any authorization from you and the likes of you, beneath the radar, beneath the survey groups and the pundit attacks and the phony baloney certitudes, the American people are beginning to galvanize for a fundamental realignment of that body. Everyone sees it: the incompetence and corruption of the Republican leadership. And this incompetence and corruption is a failure, not of specific men, but of a worldview. Your worldview. That worldview has driven the country into the ground. Americans will vote it out. Sarah
What you are touching upon, revealing, in your comments about Obama's experience and his qualifications is simply:

The hate for George Bush is so deep, so engrained; marbled throughout the "Land-of-Loons".
Lefties and Liberals, they've proven, through their fawning over, "empty-suit" Obama, that their criterion for hoisting him with no desire for, vetting him. None. They were ready to pull the trigger on his presidency a year ago, long before Chris Matthews got a "thrill up and down his leg" over Obama. It's this deep HATE for Bush, Cheney, Karl Rove, going back to 2000---growing ever greater each year:
"HATE BUSH".........O-B-A-M-A!...O-B-A-M-A!
"FU*K BUSH".........O-B-A-M-A!...O-B-A-M-A!
"BUSH IS HITLER"....O-B-A-M-A!...O-B-A-M-A!
"GENERAL BETRAYUS"..O-B-A-M-A!...O-B-A-M-A!

Their wholesale ignoring the character and associations of Obama is INFINITELY revealing. While speaking before an audience, Obama said yesterday of the debate, "It took them 45 minutes before any questions of the "real" issues were asked". This is BIZARRE!

Real issues? After all, when you are hell bent on socialist principles, Marxist ideals, it is inherently NOT about the candidates' character.

Only as defined by those Emerald City residents who would declare, "Pay no mind to the man behind the curtain!" Just look at him....just listen to him.....just VOTE for him!

It's amazing how people over look the simple fact that Obama is unqualified to be president. Even if americans believe the lie that Bush has failed americans and that McCain will be more of the same, then americans are left to wonder - how is Obama qualified to make corrections? The man is completely unqualified.

Brob, Love or Hate him Obama is
UNQUALIFIED. This is the issue, and the only issue voters will need to know in November. Even people who love and support Obama admit that he lacks any relevant experience that makes him qualified to become the next president of United States. Shouldn't qualifications count when we pick a president? SERIOUSLY! even in the name of unity, an unqualified president is a threat to our security and future as a nation.
Sarah writes: Friday, April, 18, 2008 2:33 AM
Patriotic Liberal, What qualifies Obama
to be president? Before we hear the dirt on McCain, let's discuss what qualifications Obama will use to "save america from the evil and failed policies of Bush". What qualifications? NO QUALIFICATIONS. Even if americans agree with you that Bush's policies were bad and McCain might repeat them, they will not find anything in Barak's resume to suggest he is qualified to be POTUS. Hence lies the problem with nominating Barak. He is the most unqualified, inexperienced and foreign-influenced man to ever ran for POTUS. The odds are not good - even if your premise is right, Obama still remains unqualified to be the person who makes everything okay. Check mate....tick tock tick tock
Sarah writes: Friday, April, 18, 2008 2:24 AM
laborlawyer, anger is understandable
because last night, americans got to finally see that Obama is a LOOSER. Don't blame the questions, blame the candidate. The man lacks charisma unless he is surrounded by people chanting his name i.e. he does well in fund raiser events but can't hold his own when faced with challenging questions by people who do not bow at his feet. Also, Obama is unable to perform under pressure. He raised 10 times the money Clinton raised in Jan. and Feb. He got more endorsements and had the Kennedy's and Oprah campaigning for him YET he could not close the nomination on March 4th. As president, Obama will face bigger challenges than being asked to explain shady friendships. He will face people who do not like him or his politics around the world. The issue then becomes - if he is whining about two reporters asking him questions, how will he deal with the pressures facing the next president? If he can not seal up a nomination when he has Oprah and the Kennedy's campaignig for him and when he has them raising over 80 million and he is outspending Clinton 3:1, then the reporters are right to raise questions about his electability. As a lawyer, you know that issues pertaining to character are important to the jury. American voters are the jurors who will elect a president. Obama does not pass the credibility test and media and money can't buy him trust with the american people. You know it, just like Dean does - McCain will be the next president. And this time, it's not a vast right wing conspiracy.
Sarah writes: Friday, April, 18, 2008 2:12 AM
Brob, Republican opinion not important
however, Clinton supporters (democrats) mean it when they say that they would rather vote for McCain than Obama. The fact that Obama is UNKNOWN makes him at best a dangerous proposition for the presidency. Many americans realize that the more we know about Obama and his "life's experiences" the less compatible he is with the duties of a commander in chief which include "to defend this nation against all enemies, domestic and foreign". Obama's buddies and business mates are this countries enemies. When the superdelegates nominate Obama (and they will), republicans will win with a landslide - not just the whitehouse but the congressional seats as well. Obama is the most UNQUALIFIED, INEXPERIENCED FOREIGN-INFLUENCED man to ever run for POTUS. And that is not a right wing conspiracy - even democrats know it, at least 30% who will vote McCain and the other 20% who will realize that when Obama begins his national campaign. Obama gets at best 40% of the national vote (blacks, college kids and liberal, guilty democrats). He loses 60% of social and fiscal conservatives, military, hispanics, seniors and whites.

Joe,

Thanks for your prior service.

It's sad to see the lefties use Reverend Wrong's stint in the Marine Corps as a shield from criticism for saying "G-d dammmmn America !" and so on.
Similarly, they tried to use Private Beauchamp's service as a shield from criticism of his fabricated New Republic stories which defamed his fellow servicemen.

Ironically, those same lefties don't give as much credit to General Petraeus for his service---rather, they take out full page ads in the newspaper calling him, "General Betray-us."

Nor will these same lefties who scream "chickenhawk!" at the current administration be voting for McCain (who served) over Obama (who didn't).

The New York Times is reporting that Politico has found ANOTHER questionnaire from 1996 where Barry favored banning the manufacturing, sale, and possession of handguns. Why am I not surprised?

Why does Barry keep lying about this? I am sure the Obamabots will offer yet another, tired excuse about how Barry was mischaracterized in some way, but the excuses are beginning to wearing thin, folks.

I know this is going to bother the liberals but I am going to say it anyway. The ONLY way a black liberal Democrat wins the presidency is if he can convince the vast majority of the country is NOT another shake-down artist like Jackson and Sharpton. On the surface, Barry appeared to be a different sort. But with each passing day, he is revealed to be something else entirely. I mean, after all, how many Americans have been in William Ayers living room, soliciting campaign funds? How many Americans went to the God Damn America/AIDS Invented By Government/Israel Developed Arab-Black Bomb Church for 20 years?

With each passing week, the glow of Barry's halo diminishes. Rasmussen (you know-the guy who got the 2004 margin EXACTLY correct), now has Barry's unfavorable rating at 50%. By August, it will be even higher.

Remember what Carville said a few weeks about Barry and Wright---"this is one of about 100 things".

McCain doesn't need a 100 to win, and win decisively.

Where has socialism been most consistently implemented? Where has its fundamental principle -- that the individual's life and property belongs to society, and may be disposed of as society wishes, to fulfill any of its alleged "needs" -- where has this principle been most faithfully followed?

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

People's Republic of China (until recently, when they've permitted an element of capitalism)

National Socialist Germany

Socialist Fascist Italy

Imperial Japan

Cuba

North Korea

Vietnam

Check the economic conditions that prevailed in those countries -- THAT's what socialism is good for.

Failures of socialism, part 4:
Social Security taxes you for life on the grounds that you are too stupid, and too irresponsible, to plan for your own retirement and must depend on a wise, efficient, benevolent government to do it for you.

And when you reach retirement age, after a lifetime of paying taxes into the system, what do you find? You find that no one can retire on what Social Security provides.

for Brob
Brob writes: "Simply false. We have a partially socialized system and we have for years. As does all of Europe, Israel, Australia, and Canada. By any rational definitions, all those systems "work" otherwise they would not have the standard of living that they have."

The unemployment rate in EVERY European country is higher than America. (The only exception is Britain, were you aware of that?) France has not had an unemployment rate below 8% in DECADES.

Is that what you call a system that "works"???

Canada is not a superpower; it's a useless, harmless, sparsely populated country, not a role model for Great Powers like Britain, the U.S., or even China.

All these aforementioned nations you talk about have been coasting by counting on the military power of the UNITED STATES to bail them out in a crisis. That costs money. And those crises happen all too often.

FOUR TIMES in the last 100 years, the U.S. has had to spend billions of dollars and shed its blood to save Europe. It is because of THAT shield that Europe can conveniently choose to hide behind pacifism and socialism while secretly thanking God that they can always count on Uncle Sam to save their asses.

We spent double or triple on NATO what European countries spent. How prosperous would they have been if they had to pay us the difference?

Mike writes: Thursday, April, 17, 2008 4:42 PM
Brob, you commit the fallacy.....
... of equating unregulated capitalism with anarchy -- which is simply another indication of your complete ignorance about capitlism.

And if you think that "regulations" eliminate bribes, look at the stunning amount of lobbying going on in Washington right now.

The greater the power government holds over the economy, the greater the temptation to resort to bribery to get economic controls and regualtions passed that are favorable to your particular company or industry.

Nor are you able -- apparently -- to think in terms of principles. So you fail to see that citing the fact that ALL countries have socialism proves nothing -- just like the fact that at one time all men lived under tyrannical kings didn't prove that was the proper way for men to live.

Obama gets the ENDORSEMENT sought
Obama just received the support from the leader of HAMAS. It is good to see that Obama has behaved in such a way to receive this approval.

Of course, HAMAS is a terrorist organization. It only harbors nefarious intent. It has nothing productive nor constructive to contribute.

Let's see:

1.) Barack Obama maintains an old friendship with an avowed terrorist, Bill Ayers. He has held parties at his house. He has served on the WOODS FUND with Ayers and in partnership donated monies within the fund to another individual with terrorist ties,

2.) Khalidi was head of the OFFICIAL PRESS AGENCY of the, Palestinian Liberation Organization, founded by another terrorist, Yasser Arafat. Khalidi's ties to, PLO go back over two decades.
Khalidi received two donations from Woods Fund ($40,000.00 and $35,000.00). It was on the collective decision of Obama and Ayers that this money was given to Khalidi.

3.) Barack Obama's UCC church gives a voice to terrorists in its own church bulletin. Hamas terrorist, Mousa Abu Marzook was given free reign in reprinting the HAMAS Manifesto in the, "PASTOR'S PAGE", that special place where Jeremiah Wright communicates his most coveted of ideas and comments.

4.) Ali Baghdadi, an Arab-American activist was allowed to write his hateful tripe in the June 10, 2007, Pastor's Page.

5.) Barack Obama is a 20-plus year member of the HATE-SPEWING church of Jeremiah Wright. And only Obama's swooning followers believe it is merely a coincidence.

6.) Barack Obama will not wear an American flag pin nor will he extend respect to the Pledge of Allegiance.

7.) Michelle Obama, Barack's wife has only once in her adult life been introduced to pride in her country. And that was only recently generated by her husband's ability to pull the wool over the eyes of his swooning followers. She's infinitely proud of that.

8.) Obama holds small town Americans in contempt. Period.

Yeah, these are all coincidences.

It's also quite amusing to see many Democrats suddenly having to confront just how baised the media is. These Hillary fans understand just how 'in the tank' most of the media is for Barry.

brob & the pastor problem
Obama's issue with his pastor is not the same thing as a Mormon or Catholic not leaving the faith due to disagreements. For one, the obligation to God that you cite would seem to include avoiding spewers of hatred in His name. In LDS and Catholic theology you are a part of a whole organization. Going to the church on the other corner doesn't cut it if the larger church is "true". The option to "pick another pastor" isn't there in the same way that it is for many protestants.
NoDonkey writes: Thursday, April, 17, 2008 4:10 PM

Not an issue?

If you choose to hang around far left lunatics in your free time, exactly what sort of people are you going to put in your cabinet?

Can you just imagine the Marxist freak show Obama's cabinet will become? Racial grievance mongers, far left anti-American lunatics and a series of inane jackasses spouting tired 60's rhetoric?

No to Obama and a big no to Obama's hell's kitchen cabinet.
Mike writes: Thursday, April, 17, 2008 4:03 PM
Brob, when you resort to the argument...
... that "Your ideas must be wrong because nobody else is practicing them." -- it means you don't have any actual arguments to offer.

At one time, no nation on earth was practicing the idea of political freedom, with individual rights and limits on government power. Must prove that is a bad idea, right?

At one time, all men lived under some form of tyrannical rule, usually by a king, who held absolute power over their lives and held them in absolute poverty. Must prove that such is the proper way for men to live, right?

At one time, virtually all men believed the earth to be flat. Must be true, right?
Mike writes: Thursday, April, 17, 2008 3:58 PM
Brob, that's nonsense.
Mexico doesn't even allow freedom to travel throughout the country -- you must apply for a government permit to travel from one province to another.

The Mexican government is thoroughly corrupt. The businessmen I deal with down there talk about how all local government officials expect and demand bribes -- and the get them, because you can't do anything in business there without government permission.

Mexico is most decidely NOT an example of unregulated capitalism.
GopTiger writes: Thursday, April, 17, 2008 3:54 PM
Brob, please...
Any Catholic politician who stood by and defended a pedophiliac priest would not, could not be elected president.

Any Southern Baptist politician who stood by a pro-segregationist pastor for 20 years would not, could not be elected president.

And Barry won't be elected president for similar reasons.

You state a parishioner is dedicated to "God and the Congregation" but not the pastor. I'm not sure how many Americans are going to be REASSURED by Barry's dedication to THIS congregation which, as we have all seen, reveled in every vile lie Jeremiah Wright preached from the pulpit. As a college educated adult, the fact Barry chose this church out of all the churches in Chicago demonstrates just how poor his judgment is.

If you think a presidential candidate can give $50,000 to a church controlled by a raving lunatic and it not be an issue, then you apparently don't know most Americans.

A simple question, Brob- just how badly will Barry lose Pennsylvania Tuesday? It won't take us long to figure out how attuned you are to Pennsylvanian voters.

Failures of socialism, part 3:Medicare
More on Medicare:

There are now over 120,000 pages of Medicare rules and regulations that doctors must follow and the average doctor that sees Medicare patients spends more than one full day per week on paperwork alone. He also must employ additional clerical help to keep up with the paperwork. And over 65% say that they would never accept Medicare patients again, if they had it to do over. So Medicare doctors are getting harder and harder to find.

In addition, by removing all financial responsibility for their own healthcare, Medicare has destroyed the incentive to find he best healthcare values -- and has destroyed the incentive for doctors to compete.

The net result is that prior to the introduction of Medicare, the American people were spending about 6% of their incomes on healthcare -- NOW, they are spending over 15%, as healthcare costs have increased much, much faster than inflation.

Thus, not only had Medicare INCREASED the number of elderly who cannot afford healthcare and must depend on forced charity -- it has made the cost of healthcare for ALL Americans drastically higher than it otherwise would be.

Failures of socialism, part 2: Medicare
Despite what liberals/socialists would like to claim, the elderly received healthcare before Medicare was launched. Lyndon Johnson didn't argue that they were not receiving healthcare -- he couldn't make that argument, because it wasn't true.

Instead, what he argued was that healthcare was too expensive for the elderly, causing some to have to rely on charity -- which he considered to be "beneath their dignity".

Well, if you are relying on the taxpayers to pay your doctor bills, you are STILL an object of charity -- except now, it's forced, involuntary charity. The only thing Medicare has accomplished is to greatly increase the number of these charity cases by driving the cost of healthcare so high that many more elderly cannot afford it these days.

Thus, Medicare has INCREASED, not decreased, the number of elderly depending on charity to pay their doctor bills.
Mike writes: Thursday, April, 17, 2008 3:36 PM
Failures of socialism, part 1
In the 20 years before Johnson launched his "war on poverty" and "Great Society", the number of people living under the poverty line in the United States fell steadily, year by year, from some 45.5 million to 24 million.

However, after those wonderful socialistic programs were launched, the number of people living under poverty STOPPED FALLING, and instead began to RISE AGAIN, finally stabilizing at the current number of some 37 million.

So, the net effect of spending trillions on anti-poverty programs has been to INCREASE the number living under the poverty line.

They have that standard of living because they are still partly capitalist.

More importantly, if the current semi-socialized system "works", then you have no basis for complaining about it, now do you?

B-job,

When taxes are raised, it negatively affects capital investment and consumer spending.
When there is less capital investment and less consumer spending, tax revenues d-e-c-r-e-a-s-e.

On the other hand, when there are tax cuts, it i-n-c-r-e-a-s-e-s capital investment and consumer spending, thereby increasing tax revenues.

That's all just basic math.

Charlie Gibson made that point last nite in the debate when he grilled Barry Obama about his desire to raise the capital gains tax.

By the way, John F. Kennedy (not to be confused with John. F. Kerry !) was adamant that cutting taxes would grow the economy.

30,000 dollars in 2007 to a church you were going to leave if the pastor had not 'retired' at the end of the year?

Is there anybody on this planet who doesn't see what kind of lying sack of garbage Barry is?

Why can't you Democrats pick a decent person as the nominee? Why does it have to be a man who attends- and defends- church where the pastor believes Israel and South Africa are building bombs capable of killing on blacks and Arabs? Why does it have to be a LUNATIC who gives 50,000 grand to a church where the pastor tells his flock AIDS was invented by the government to kill blacks?

Brob, it is also misleading....
.. to claim that we've "borrowed from the Chinese to fund a war".

The Chinese have billions of American dollars because we've bought billions of dollars worth of their exports. There are only two things the Chinese can do with those American dollars: trade them for some other currency -- or spend them here in the United States.

So they've chosen to invest some of them here by purchasing, at open auctions, United States treasury certificates and bonds -- as have many, many other investors, both American and foreign.

So it is misleading to imply that we went, hat in hand, and asked the Chinese for money to run our government. We didn't. They chose to invest here.

And since the Iraq and Afghanistan wars right now only comprise about 5% of total federal spending, it is REALLY misleading to imply that we borrowed from China to pay for the war.

I answered this yesterday. Obama is a socialist, pure and simple.

Socialism is the doctrine that your life and your property belong, NOT TO YOU, but TO SOCIETY, and may be disposed of as society sees fit, to fulfill any of its alleged "needs".

That is clearly Obama's premise when he demands that the government provide "better education", "better jobs", "better healthcare", "better economic opportunities", etc. -- all of which are things government can only do by taking the taxpayer's money.

His demands, then, amount to a declaration that said money BELONGS TO THE GOVERNMENT, not to the individuals that earned it, and that the government has the right to take AS MUCH AS IS NEEDED to satisfy the grievances at hand.

That is socialism. How much clearer can I make it for you?

NY Sun Link on Capital Gains
I confess, I couldn't bring myself to watch the debate. I'm delighted that it proceeded so well without me. It was Christmas in April.

Here's a link to a NY Sun editorial on the capital gains discussion last night. I saw above that one poster mentioned it.

From the editorial, it made it sound as if Obama was about as effective answering questions about capital gains tax rates as Lounden Downey Jr. on the witness stand in "A Few Good Men": "Well, there was this blowout. Hal? Hal?"

Check out Obama's tax returns. It's hard to tell when the burden of these student loans was lifted. I think his campaign finally got candid and admitted that the loans have been paid for six years. At any rate, check out Schedules B and D of his tax returns. Their idea of asset allocation seems to be putting half of their dough in a savings account and the other half in an interest-bearing checking account.

I bet Cindy McCain could run circles around Obama and Hillary on economic policies. She's actually been actively involved in a successful business.

To Obama supporters, I say that my nephews with piggy banks have more financial acumen than Obama. And I with a number of years playing with GI Joes as a kid have more knowledge of the military than Obama.

Democrats, you really do make this too easy.

Look at the lefty loons on this forum alone. They represent the Carter-McGovern-Clinton Dem Party. But more than that. Note their angst and bitterness. The entire Dem Party is radical leftist. From top to bottom. Just look at Carter's trip; the Hamas endorsement of Obama , the fact that Hil spent Saul Alinksky time in a leftist-communist law firm in NoCal too. I have been urging Pubs, Indies, and Reagan Dem to fully reject this radical un-American Party. From top to bottom in Senate and House races. No one has to think what these Dems think, endorse, and vote on. Every time, it is radically liberal socialist pacifist. Every time. Both candidates last night were so incompetent that no wonder Frank Luntz' Poll group in Pa. said that 9 of their group would vote for ole John if their candidate does not get chosen.

Answer the Questions
Obama will continue to face questions about Wright and San Francisco and so on because he hasn't satisfied the independents. His supporters can swoon all they want. The fact remains 60% to 70% of the country still wonders why a presidential candidate (a relatively important leadershipd position) didn't have the guts to tell a foul-mouthed bully of a pastor to stop telling lies, spewing hate, and infecting the hearts and minds of his congregants in the process. I can't get past that.

I will never vote for a person who stood silent all that time in the presence of what I saw on those clips and said nothing. And the reason he sat on his hands and kept his mouth shut is he agrees with Wright or he desperately need the voting support of Wright and his congregants. Either way, Obama is a shameful coward--and he has lousy positions on the issues.

The scales need to fall from the eyes of Obama's supporters. Buyer's remorse is right.

Trying to figure what Hillary meant
When asked whether Obama could win the general, Hillary said "yes, yes, Yes."

Was Hillary channelling Molly Bloom's soliloquy in James Joyce's Ulysses?

"...I was a Flower of the mountain yes when I put the rose in my hair like the Andalusian girls used or shall I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the Moorish wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes. "

Maybe I am reading too much into it.

Hugh - don't worry about Obambi. After flubs, floundering, and activing peevish - the MSM rides in on the calvery to save their candidate:

Tom Shales (Washington Post):

" It [The Debate] was another step downward for network news -- in particular ABC News, which hosted the debate from Philadelphia and whose usually dependable anchors, Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, turned in shoddy, despicable performances."

CNN Reports:

"The candidates spent nearly half of the debate, hosted by ABC News, tilting over flare-ups that have been fodder for journalists, partisans and pundits for the past few weeks. Much of the fire was leveled at Obama, who once again answered questions about controversial statements by his former pastor and his own comments that some rural Pennsylvanians are "bitter."

Monster-no; fool-yes
Anybody, ANYBODY, who would go to Jeremiah Wright's anti-Jewish, anti-white church for 20 years, attend dinner parties at Bill Ayer's house, and married Michelle Obama is simply a fool.

The Democrats always say they want a 'debate on the issues' but when they get one (last night on ABC), they go nuts.

The issue-capital gains taxes. Barry doesn't seem to know or care that every time the tax has been cut, the government receives more revenue.

The issue- the Second Amendment. Barry gets caught fudging on his views on this part of the U.S. Constitution. Alexrod, after the debate fiasco, says Barry now supports allowing individual cities to BAN the sale and manufacture of handguns.

The issue- Social Security taxes. Barry, in the course of 10 seconds, begins to backtrack from his own plan about how to solve long-term Social Security solvency. Just a bit of skepticism by the press and Barry is willing to hedge on his vaunted plan.

The issue- the judgment necessary to be president. The rookie Senator always touts his 'judgment' as a unique asset if he is president, but he doesn't like it when his political associations/judgments over the past 20 years are questioned.

Face it, Barry may be wonderful behind a teleprompter, but he just isn't that swift on his feet in a debate. It's obvious he resents being questioned-how dare the press question Zeus-and it shows, big time.

When have been told for quite some time about how brilliant Barry is. After last night's debate, ever so quieyly, people are beginning to wonder if that is really true. After all, how smart is a man who attends church where the pastor thinks AIDS was invented by the U.S. government for the purpose of killing black people and Israel is developing a bomb that kills only blacks and Arabs?

issue is an indication of the kind of criticism that will not go over well with voters. Senator Obama will welcome more focus on this because every time it comes up, he will look better and better. Similarly, it's only a small percentage of the population that cares about the Jeremiah Wright problem. In order to win the general, Senator McCain has to make clear distinctions between his policy prescriptions and Senator Obama's. Iraq is not the place to start.

If Senator Obama credibly adopts moderate positions on taxes and spending, backing away from radical changes, he wins the general election in a walk.

Right wing disappointment
The pathetic-ness of the debate mirrors that of the right wing.

Americans care about a 3 trillion dollar war that has accomplished nothing measurable, sky rocketing gas prices and health care.

All of which gets ignored by right wing media, much as last nights debate.

McCain is going to get creamed in November because conservatives are going to stay home, something no poll is asking because then this "horse" race would be discovered to be a crowning. Whoever wins the Democratic nomination will be the next President, not because of the candidate but because of the abandonment of the right wing to concentrate on issues that matter.

Bashing bitter will not win you elections but it will make for entertainment and make those in the entertainment business money. Which is why the debate mirrored right wing media: its about money and not politics.

Althouse on the Debate
1. It was bad of ABC to trouble Obama with questions about his attitudes and character instead of offering him opportunities to expound policy.

2. Obama is tired. Lackluster.

3. Hillary was intense.

AND: Let me reveal what I think.

1. It was good.

2. Obama has always had a blandness about him. When you're feeling good about him, you project your hopes onto that blandness and he seems wonderful. When you're anxious about him, you think he's effete and ennervated. He's always the same. His face did look puffy and not as fresh as it once did. Deal with it. He's a human being.

3. Hillary bloomed with bright energy in the environment of ABC's questions. She can reel out the policy when that's what's required. But cruel political fighting unleashes her super powers.

No buyer's remorse.
"Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the health care and mortgage crises, the overall state of the economy and dozens of other pressing issues had to wait for their few moments in the sun as Obama was pressed to explain his recent "bitter" gaffe and relationship with Rev. Wright (seemingly a dead issue) and not wearing a flag pin -- while Clinton had to answer again for her Bosnia trip exaggerations.

Then it was back to Obama to defend his slim association with a former '60s radical -- a question that came out of rightwing talk radio and Sean Hannity on TV, but was delivered by former Bill Clinton aide Stephanopolous. This approach led to a claim that Clinton's husband pardoned two other '60s radicals. And so on. The travesty continued.

More time was spent on all of this than segments on getting out of Iraq and keeping people from losing their homes and -- you name it. Gibson only got excited complaining that someone might raise his capital gains tax. Yet neither candidate had the courage to ask the moderators to turn to those far more important issues. Talking heads on other networks followed up by not pressing that point either. The crowd booed Gibson near the end. Why didn't every other responsible journalist on TV?"

Radical Connections of Obama
The radical connections theme goes well beyond Ayers: I think much more work needs to be done investigating the Frank Marshall Davis (known CPUSA member black poet) who was a friend of Obama's grandparents and a mentor to young Obama - it's easy to be bitter when your teen mentor is a radical black communist!

Why was Davis a friend of Obama's grandparents? Was it just because they were from Kansas originally? Or, was there an ideological connection? Were the grandparents (one or both) communists or fellow travelers? Was Obama's mother raised as a red diaper baby? Was Obama, essentially, raised as a red diaper baby?

We know the grandfather was a very bitter, angry man -- from Obama's autobiography -- and that he stirred up racial issues with Obama. Think of the incident with the panhandler: it was the grandfather who was trembling with rage because granny was afraid of a black panhandler. I suspect that reflected his politics more than an acute concern for the tender sensibilties of young Barack -- indeed, why mention it to Barack at all when granny didn't, if not to upset him and make him question whites? Was Barack's family bringing him up to hate and distrust America?

There were a lot of "gotcha" questions. It was a tougher night for Obama than Clinton. But as those of us who watched Republican candidates get grilled on MSNBC know, what goes around comes around.

Were George Stephanopolous and Charlie Gibson carrying Hillary's water? I am sure many will say so, but I think they were trying to be tough and provocative. It was a prime time debate, so they tried to make it interesting.

Strangely enough, Barak Obama would have had a better night if Fox News had hosted that debate. Barak had a bad night, but he should have been ready for the questions that were posed.
