Does This Bother You, Too?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:35 AM
MSNBC has this line from Obama's Berlin speech on a loop ...

"I know my country has not perfected itself. At times, we've struggled to keep the promise of liberty and equality for all of our people. We've made our share of mistakes, and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions."

But I also know how much I love America."
At first, it didn't bother me.  But the more I hear it, the more it rubs me the wrong way...

OBLAMA couldnt spell GI and what the hell are you blabbling on about. OBLAMA voted against every bit of funding for the troops except the GI BIll and I agree with MCSHAME on this one. As a 22 yr vet it will not work just to give everyone the GI bill who hasnt deserved it yet. We already have a problem in this country now with weekend worriors which by the way most joined the Military for the Education Bill we have today.

Only problem is when they raise their hands and accept defending the country allot of them CUT and RUN when its time to pay the PIPER and have top defend this great nation of ours. The GI bill is for those who deserve it and serve their country not those who just enlist to get the GI BILL and mark my word you will not keep Stability with that GI BILL. People will use the Military GI BILL as an EDUCATION TOOL not a DEFEND the NATION TOOL. Every Soldier deserves the help of its government but PLEASE lets not turn our Military into a GAME SHOW FOR THE ILITERATE becuase LIBS SAY SO.

I see nothing wrong with the EDucation system we have now becuase its better than anyone elses at this time.

Another thing BOOMER and take notes, THE GI BILL IS THE ONLY THING OBLAMA HAS DID TO SUPPORT THE TROOPS except to want them to RETREAT and SURRENDER. Boy im proud of him, NOT

Empty over full
This comment doesn't bother me. As a matter of fact, I think it's one of the only times that I have heard Obama say anything of any substance. To paraphrase, "America has made mistakes, get over it".

The rest of the speech is far more disturbing to me, since it is yet another example of Obama's astounding naivety in regard to foreign relations and policy, the significance and causes of historical events and endless parade of empty promises of change without a credible plan.

Looking "I know my country has not perfected itself" quote within the full context of the speech is more troubling to me than the statement by itself. Alone, it is an acknowledgment of a valid point. Within the context of the speech, it demonstrates an extremely distorted view of events, history and foreign policy. More disturbing, putting this speech in context with Obama's relationships, past actions, his wife's speeches and his overall vision; it clarifies a view of a man who lives in a distorted reality with no real concept of our country's role and contribution to the world and a man who is bent on conspiracy theories and divisiveness.

Former Ramstein Medical Chief Denounces

VoteVets, the pro-Democrat group of retired military personnel, counters McCain's Black Hawk down statement with some outrage from Col. Katherine Scheirman (Ret.), the retired Chief of Medical Operations for United States Air Force in Europe Headquarters at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany:

"John McCain's new ad is dishonest and shameful, and I say that as the former Chief of Medical Operations. Senators Hagel and Reed confirmed to Bob Schieffer yesterday that Senator Obama visited the Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad as a part of their CODEL, with no media present.

"In Germany, Senator Obama made the right decision to respect wounded troops, and the doctors and nurses doing crucial and time-sensitive work, by not making a visit that was characterized as a campaign event by the Pentagon. Senator Obama should be thanked for putting our military above politics. And, I would hope that John McCain would think in those same terms, the next time he is put in a similar situation.

"Senator Obama has voted for the troops when John McCain has not, most recently on the new GI Bill. I am happy that Senator Obama puts the welfare of our troops above politics."

Also, it's notable that Obama's camp, quick to respond to most every charge and ever-conscious of not repeating the mistakes of Kerry, has yet to go on the air with a spot pushing back against McCain's charge on the troop visit. Apparently, they won't unless McCain puts real money behind his spot and goes beyond just gaming it for earned media.

This has been their game plan from day one. This is what you call the HATE AMERICA FIRST BUNCH and its here to stay, I have relatives overseas and they think we are all a JOKE for the way our Leaders act when they are ABROAD.

OBLAMA cannot lose for LIBS have stated that we need to show the rest of the WORLD we are not RACIST so to do that what will have to happen. OBLAMA wins so we can show how stupid we really are for letting this Fiasco go on this long.

Im taking Odds at how many cities will burn if OBLAMA LOSES. Thats why he wont lose we as a country cannot let the world see how ignorant our Leadership in this country has become if he loses and they and we know who they are, RIOT, rape, piledge and burn the U.S down

OBLAMA WINS and we as a Nation cannot stop it.

Reality is subjective isn't it?
To me reality means the country needs energy independence so drill,we are at war so win,we have a huge illegal immigrant problem so enforce existing laws,we have a gigantic deficit so stop spending,we have a problem with the loss of jobs because corps are moving ut of the country so lower the corp tax rate.Just some of those loony conservative beliefs on the right.I know these unrealistic goals are in direct contrast to lefts well thought out and common sense solutions such as suing OPEC and prosecuting speculators, surrendering, open borders, increasing entitlement programs, increasing corp taxes and capital gains taxes, but like I said reality is subjective.

Why Does It Bother You So?
Ask yourself this one simple question...

Is America perfect?

Of course not, so CLEARLY its going to make mistakes, its going to slip up, and yes it will, heck it HAS done some terribly wrong things in the past.

So why the childish act of hurt feelings over a simple statement of the obvious?

The world knows America isn't perfect. And God SURELY knows America isn't perfect. Seems like only the loons on the right falsely comfort themselves with the BELIEF that America is perfect.

Wake up and join the rest of us in REALITY.

That's not the worst part for me...
I'm more concerned about the class warfare rhetoric sprinkled throughout the "walls" section of the speech and elsewhere. When a candidate is worried about the "haves" of the world not sharing enough with the "have nots"... and crediting the "have nots" with providing the work for all the wealth...

It seems to show a prediliction for a train of reasoning that has lead to nothing but disaster, tyranny, and oppression in the world.

1. Illegal invasion? According to whom. Is this John Kerry's UN "global
test" again? If Europe thinks it's bad, then it's probably good.

2. Who has been imprisoned without legal protection? Are you referring
to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed? Yes, a lot of us Americans like having
him in Guantanemo. Is that also illegal, according to the UN?

3. I read posts like yours and I realize that Obama will be lucky to scratch

The United States of America is the strongest and best daddy in the world. He is not perfect but he is worthy of our defense. When we compare him to other daddy's he is far and away the very best. What is the point of Obama going to Germany and campaigning for their vote ? Germany has been so psychologically damaged by their guilt about World War II that they have lost their backbone and identity. They cannot standup to Muslims and they don't trust themselves. They just want peace - even if it comes at the price of selling out their souls. NO wonder Obama is their hero. Plus, they can always count on the USA to bail them out.

Matt, you need to do some self examination and try to find out why you can't be very proud of America. I suspect you will find that you have never done anything to be proud of yourself.

Your Liberalism is the very reason that Democracies fail, the sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage...Yes, Liberalism is a MENTAL DISORDER.

Democrats look at America more like this: I love Daddy, but he did just roll down the street a little drunk and beat up the neighbor who didn't do anything to him.

Read between the lines, Obama is talking about Bush and Iraq, pure and simple. If he does get elected, it will be poetic justice. The whole "citizen of the world" thing really bothers me -- it is more prevalent in Obama's words, and more important, in his actions, than many voters may realize. Does Obama's view of himself as "citizen of the world" more important than his being a citizen of the United States?

Obama seems more focused on solving the problems of the world, with the United States paying most of the bill. I want a president who is more interested in representing the United States and FIRST solving our domestic problems. That is not Obama!

Liberals don't love America
If they did, they wouldn't be working hard to

--deny us the right to use our own resources.

--remove all religious expression from public view.

--establish complete control over every aspect of our lives.

--limit our freedom of expression.

--deny us the right to keep and bear arms.

--deny us the right to defend ourselves by any means necessary.

--extend the rights of Americans to her enemies.

--obstruct any movement to protect our borders.

--dismantle the America that once inspired greatness, and replace it with an America that caters to the lowest levels of society.

In essence, Liberals don't love America, they love only what they think America should be, according to their vision.

They cry foul when anyone questions their patriotism. Hogwash. They aren't patriotic. Go research the word patriotic, and you'll understand.

They are dissenters, but they are not loyal. They preach sedition, and then want the protections reserved for the truly loyal.

It's about time we stopped playing their word games and called a duck, a duck.

There is no promise of equality. America was not founded to promise equality to everyone. Our Declaration of Independence does not promise equality; it recognizes that we are CREATED equal, but there is no mention of equality beyond the creation.

There is also no promise of liberty--that depends entirely upon each one of us.

This is a good example of Obama's style of Marxism coming to the fore--Marxism that disguises itself as something else.

Obama is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

I want improvement, but I don't want change--at least I don't want Obama's version of change.

I don't want things like Obama's Global Poverty Act on top of our current foreign aid commitments. If Obama want to set up a federal agency to vet charities that perform good deeds overseas, great. That way contributors can VOLUNTARILY donate to reputable charities. But no taxation to redistribute wealth.

I don't want Obama's internal security force (see the 2 July 2008 speech he made) that's the size of our armed forces and with an equivalent budget.

To resurrect the 1960s slogan, I say to Obama, "America, love or leave it."

I love the ad that running in my state (Ohio) that has some clips of Obama blathering on and concludes: "We are the ones we've been waiting for."

I have news for Obama and his little wifey-poo who believes she should have carte blanche to say whatever drips from her mouth:I'VE WORKED HARD ALL MY LIFE FOR WHAT I HAVE; I
GIVE TO HELP MY COMMUNITY AND OTHER CHARITIES ACROSS THE NATION. I DO NOT GET HAND-OUTS & I do not owe an apology to Germany. ....

Obama wants to take the money of Americans who have worked instead of taking handouts, and he wants to penalize my hard work by giving my money to unknown groups around the World- who will more than likely use that money to attempt to destroy us. The only ones who want Obama in the Oval Office are those who are as a hinge to a door is compared to their own bed mattress: all they can do is swing back and forth in their bedsheets, doing nothing,
contributing nothing and living off my life's
work and tireless effort to give something back.

You want to blame the Republican Administration for the way things have gone in this Nation, but you fail to even see that Mr. Bush has just gotten into office when 9/11 occured, and he was stuck with dealing with this mess - not only the mess of war, but also the mess left by the previous Democratic President who's idea of a meeting is to have some fat jewish check under his desk while he talks to foreign diplomats. Yeah, thats you...You would sell this Nation down to the gutter for a dime
and never miss a heartbeat. Obama has audacity, allright - I do not appreciate the skinny little whiner apologizing for ME; I have a President, and if an apology from the U.S. is appropriate,
it is the Commander-in-Chief who would issue it.
He issued that statement that makes us look like a bunch of wussies; and what the hell was the deal with Obama saying "GERMANY, THIS IS OUR TIME". Who's time? Germany's time? Germany and Obama's time? Is Obama a damn German or is he an
American? Thank you, but I don't want this whining, complaining, puss to be our Leader, for one good reason: HE IS NOT ABLE TO DO THE JOB, UNLESS WHAT YOU WANT HIM TO DO IS TO KISS OTHER
NATION'S BUTTS AND SPEND THE NEXT 4 YRS. MAKING UP TO THEM BY GIVING THEM THE MONEY THAT WE WOULD OTHERWISE USE FOR OUR KIDS COLLEGE EDUCATION? Not me, Obama: you cannot have my
money, and I will not kiss the asses of your
foreign countrymen. Thomas Jefferson would have shot you for treason when you get back to the States for the things you said, and with my full
support - hell, I'd buy the bullets.

does it matter?
It rubs you the wrong way? How surprising. NOT! I mean if Barak Obama said something.. anything it would rub you the wrong way. But you want to make it look like it was your astute analysis of what he said rather then the fact that you simply hate everything about him because you've long ago drawn a line in the sand and put liberals/democrats and one side and republicans / conservatives on the other side. Facts be dammed. It doesn't matter that your side has brought our country to the brink of ruin or that your president violated his oath of office... the line is drawn. And you must feign deep analysis of something Mr Obama said so the sheeple can baa baa agreement of your great thoughts.

Does This Bother You, Too?
I just keep having the feeling again and again that Obama really knows very little about this country that he wants to lead (into obscurity).
When I travel to Europe, I refer to my country as either the United States or the States--rarely, if ever, America.
Is Obama's use of the word "America" purposeful, he parses words so carefully, to reflect his vision of, not the United States of America, but the United Americas, North and South, together as our big version of the E.U. aka George Soros?

Yes and No
Does it bother me that an American (let alone someone running for POTUS) would stand in front of a crowd of concert goers and beer drinkers...uh I mean throngs of adoring masses, and bad mouth the United States of America? Certainly it bothers me but what bothers me worse is the fact that there doesn't seem to be enough outrage left in the U.S.A to not put up with any more of the apologetic, global socialist palaber. Most of America continues to drink the kool aide and God knows the media can't stop humping BO's leg long enough to tell it how it really is. When he was told his visit to wounded GIs at the hospital would have to be done privately, he decided to blow it off as the net gain to him would be zero if his pack of adoring liberal journalists could not capture the moment on film.

On the other hand, this doesn't bother me because the more of this crap he does the higher the chance he will offend larger and larger groups of people who may have otherwise voted for him.

Why slyly apologize for FREEDOM
As was said by the dying hero of BRAVEHEART - FREEDOM!!!!
Why is the arrogant dolt slyly semi-apologizing for the actions of the U.S. and debasing the greatest nation on the face of the earth! We have save all of Europe twice - Berlin BIG TIME - Japan (war crimes equal or worse than the Germans) we destroyed than raised from the ashes to a great nation. South Korea and we tried to save North Korea too. South Vietnam which was subsequently sacrificed by the liberals. Cuba and the Phillipines - South America, Iraq, Afghanistan twice - we destroyed the USSR and let it rebuild, and more and more we sacrifice our young to keep freedom in countries that we do not subsequently possess. Even when our country is BRUTALLY attacked - we do our utmost to protect the citizens of the attacking country and only destroy the leadership - same in Iraq in SPADES! Why would a presidential candidate go overseas and do ANYTHING other than proclaim the greatness and good heartedness of our great nation - We could literally own 3/4's of the world but only keep our portion. To hell with the whiny liberal "world citizen" apologists - the greatest thing in the entire universe is to be an AMERICAN CITIZEN - may GOD continue to bless the greatest nation on the face of the earth!

I see why you're bothered...
londongrl got it exactly right: sure, this country has done some bad things, but it seems wrong to trumpet that fact in front of a foreign crowd. and as other people have pointed out, talking about it in Germany of all places was really a hoot. let's see, they started both world wars, killed 6+ million Jews, Catholics, gays, and Gypsies...do you really want to be talking about past mistakes, meine Herrn und Damen?

it surely won't help us to ignore this country's past. but dwelling on it doesn't seem to be very productive. our beloved country is in trouble right now. we need to get the worst president in history OUT of office and replace him--and that's part of Obama's appeal; he is SO not George Bush.

Obama needs to grab a ladder and get over himself. and John McCain needs to man up and run a decent campaign. this lifelong Democrat might even consider voting for him.

Citizen of the world - or is it Comrade?
There are some questions which no one wants to ask Obama about his status as a citizen of the world.

What responsibilities does his world citizenship have?

How do they compare with the responsiblities he has as a citizen of the US?

If his duties as a world citizen come into conflict with the duties of US citizenship, how would he resolve the conflict?

The people who I know who claim to be "citizens of the world" see themselves as being loyal to to a "higher power" which, naturally, they define themselves. To me, it appears to be an elitist conceit.

The "perfectability" business may have its roots in the teachings of James Cone, the mentor of Obama's pastor and leader of "Black Liberation Theology". Might be worth researching.

Passports
are available for those that think there is some place more to their liking than the USA.
How many of those waving Europeans would want to be an American citizen - probably 90%.
Americans should be taken aback by Obama's remarks - and wonder why he needed to act out this horse and pony show. Certainly no one in their right mind can think a 3 day tour of Europe, shaking the hands of a few European leaders, making a speech in front of what probably equals a "Code Pink" crowd that was fed and entertained prior to the speech (and told not to bring their posters, etc.) - no one can think all of this lends credibility to his thin resume. It's thin - there is nothing there that makes him a viable candidate - nothing that he can achieve in the next 3 months - in fact there is much that should be scrutinized in more detail.

I thought he was running for the President of the US and not President of the World.

Yeah, it bothers me he prostrates himself, basically apologizing to the world how we run things, in Germany of all places.

To make apologies on behalf of your country in another country simply shows you are an insecure person and have absolutely no right and no backbone to stand up for your country.

He does not deserve the presidency, period. He can be an ambassador anywhere, he certainly knows how to play both sides, but as our leader, our guide, our president, no way.

It's ok to recognize our faults and the US does have them, but a true leader would never humble himself in order to be loved by outsiders.

He passed by our wounded troops, he didn't feel it was necessary to visit them, the men who fight for this country he wants to run.

He really is not presidential and the world is too stupid, including America, to realize this.

Chuck Baldwin thinks there is evidence to support Georege Bush rigged the September 11 attacks. http://reason.tv/roughcut/show/436.html Chuck Baldwin endorsed Ron Paul before he decided to run himself. His perspective
I read that statement and felt that Obama was speaking from the perspective of a black man growing up in America. Hinting of course at the terrible treatment of blacks in our country prior to emancipation and/or civil rights legislation. While I agree that our country has it's share of problems, just as other countries do, I don't particularly like a president or possible future president speaking about our weaknesses in front of a foreign crowd. He is supposed to represent our nation with pride and his head held high. We know what our negatives are and so do the other nations but I bet you don't hear their leaders bad mouthing their countries when they are abroad. For some reason that feels a little treasonous to me.
Lori writes: Friday, July, 25, 2008 1:52 PM
Just what is he accusing us of?
Wish Obama had been more specific...what struggle, what mistakes, what actions?

He could not or else his audience would have cheered at the first negative allegation. That would not have played well back home and McCain could have used that clip in his next ad.

You are showing why we question liberal's patriotism.

If Obama cared about our troops he would have visited out troops (with his Senate staff) and left his campaign staff at the hotel!

This story is going to sit even worse now when America realizes that he blew off out troops since he could not get any political mileage out of the visit!

Keep hating America King Liberal!

are you kidding
how are we supposed to continue to make this country a better place if we are not allowed to take an honest look at it's shortcomings?

The idea that our country is perfect and has already solved all the problems we face is ridiculous.

Any parent should know. When you love your children you want to see them become the best they can be, and that means holding them accountable when they make a mistake. It doesn't mean you love them any less. It doesn't mean your heart doesn't overflow with pride for them.

There is nothing wrong with taking an honest look at our country and taking responsibility for our mistakes in order to continue our never ending quest to work towards the goals set forth by our founding fathers.

It is not blaming America. It is not saying that other countries are better or worse than us. It is saying we hold ourselves to a very high standard because we believe in the promise of our country and we want to see it fulfilled to the greatest degree possible.
RASHUM writes: Friday, July, 25, 2008 11:54 AM
what REALLY bothers me
Is that he said this "We've made our share of mistakes, and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions" in a country that about 60 years ago was responsible for the death of 6 million Jews and countless other military casualties.

And then blew off visiting our troops!

I'm deeply disturbed and bothered by many things in our government, it doesn't mean I love my country, and the principles behind our founding and nation any less.

I think if a man loves the latter, there will be several times when he sees the failings of his government.

I don't know if Obama shares that sentiment or if he's merely talking about the Bush follies.

He's probably just talking about the Bush follies.

White Guilt vs Fear
Instead of having an election about whether we get to keep our country, the RNC has set up this amnesty vs amnesty contest which will boil down to guilt vs fear. Pathetic.

Obama is still singing the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" tune, not realizing it could be his swan song.

The only issue I have ever seen 75-80% of Americans agree on is stopping illegal aliens. Any GOP candidate that was credible on this issue could have won in a landslide.

The biggest problem is the RNC has sold it's soul to the cheap labor express. They were determined to nominate an amnesty candidate, even if it means losing the election. Stupid Party, indeed.

It's not as bad as a Kimberly Statement
It's not illegal to protect American citizens, Kimberly.

Although I'm sure your idea of protecting America probably has something to do with standing around a campfire holding hands and singing kumbayah....while at the same time one of those people your supposed to be singing kumbayah with is probably thinking of ways to stab you in the back....

Point is, sure, the United States is not perfect, I think we can all agree. But of all systems in the world -- the United States is the youngest, most powerful, and you may argue with me, but still for the most part the global hegemon.

Personally, I think everything that comes out of Obama's mouth is slightly condescending, but I don't think this is one of the worst things he has said. At least he did proclaim a love for America. And at least he did not add, "For the first time...." at the end of that statement.

Liberals always love to tell Europeans how wrong we are and point out what they think it wrong with America. Then of course the liberal cry foul when we point out the obvious fact that they do not love America as much as conservatives do.

Would be great if an American president told them all of their faults i.e. high taxes, love to appease terrorists, think working 35 hours a week is acceptable, do not think people should be fired for a poor performance, etc.

listen to the whole speech and get the context and overall gist before I could have a view -- which is what everyone should think, actually, and is one of the biggest problems we have today, in the era of the soundbite, the media echo chamber and, seemingly, deminished attention spans -- one excerpt tells you absolutely nothing.

On the "perfect" scale I think America on its worst day is alot closer to the perfect end of the scale that the people Obama calls mentors and friends ...

He said "WE" alot yesterday but who was he talking too, Americans or Germans ? Sounded like he was running for chancellor ...
hambones writes: Friday, July, 25, 2008 10:04 AM
yup
We don't need a president from the "blame America first" crowd. Obviously we aren't perfect, but we're the best example of a free, prosperous, and powerful nation that the world has ever seen. Since our founding the trend has been toward more freedom for various groups. He sounds like he's embarassed to be an American, but he can no more disown his country than he can his typical white person grandmother.

If your going to give an "I'm sorry for all of our woes" speach, Germany of all countries is not the place that needs to hear about it.
