Health Care Bill Funds Community Transformation Projects

You would think that any health care bill brought forth in Congress would actually be focused on reforming health care. Alas, it seems that both House and Senate proposals are packed with pork as well.
As the Boston Globe has reported, tucked into bills in both chambers are provisions funding what Senator Ted Kennedy’s staff calls “Community Transformation Grants.” Essentially, we’re talking about federal funding for bike paths, lighting, jungle gyms, and even farmers markets.
In the House bill, at least the spending is capped -- $1.6 billion per year. The Senate bill leaves the sky the limit – leaving the amount of spending up to the Obama Administration.
While these projects may have merit, they certainly don't belong in a health care reform package. With priorities like this running amok on Capitol Hill, is there any doubt that health care costs will only continue to skyrocket under government-run health care?

If only it were possible.
Ted Kennedy has often been referred to as the most accomplished and prodigious legislator in the Congress.
Truth is he has been the most subterranean one. Talented at burying special spending in large expenditures. 'Kinda' like the "big dig."
The Congress needs to adopt the notion of the "single-subject rule" whenever possible. It obviously won't work everywhere, but some adherence to the notion of it would preclude the siphon of funds as we note here.
I heard you described today Ms. Bachmann as the second most hated Republican female after Gov. Palin by the leftist haters within. Congratulations!

Now they will load the health care bill with more pork. More of the wish list spending. If people want to walk they will walk. If they want to bike ride they will do that as well. Those who exercise to stay healthy find a place to do it. This is just another way to sneak spending into a bill that we already cannot afford. What irresponsible thinking this group has. Just plain crooks. |

Aren't exercise and healthy food part of being healthy? And isn't the health of American citizens the entire point of the healthcare bill? Maybe that is why the GOP and some Blue Dog Dems don't get it on the health care bill. It's not about money, its about peoples health and welfare (you don't have to read very far into the constitution to see that the promotion of people's welfare is a vital duty of our government)... So it seems like this fits to me... |
|
Same old stuff by the same crooks. Hoyer even said that if congress read this monstrosity they would vote against it. It is time to put the pressure on your congress critters to make them read it, and explain to you why they want to vote for it. If they want to vote against it praise them just like a dog for good behavior.
Health care is also not a vital duty of the government. never has been and never should be. I don't know how libtards can read the constitution and see where it says this. Oh I forgot, they can read into the constitution that murder (abortion) is supported, but the right to keep and bear arms is not. |

There are lots of parks, lots of trails, lots of ball fields. People will use them if they want to exercise to stay healthy. This has no place in the health care bill. It is moronic at best. I drive by empty parks all the time. Why not see how it goes. When we see the parks or the ball fields full and no room for more to exercise then perhaps the communities could then do something. Until this happens lets not waste more money. |

"I heard you described today Ms. Bachmann as the second most hated Republican female after Gov. Palin by the leftist haters within. Congratulations!"
We don't HATE Palin.... we just think she's a joke.. The folks that hate her are folks like
We would like nothing more than for her to become the nominee for 2012.
She had a lot of potential but she was rolled out much to soon and was not prepared for the Prime or Day-Time. She was left with talking in platitudes and bromides when intellectual heft was being looked for . I think her real haters are those really qualified and articulate Republican women who were bypassed because Palin had an interesting back story.
Bachmann sees Palin as a rival... Since at one time she was the Hot Conservative Lady.... Every since Palin came on the scene Bachmann comes out daily with some outraged conspiracy theory.
We think of Bachmann as a joke too, however we consider her to be actually dangerous. Her comments have been very close to promoting insurrection and violent revolt.

Please tell us is Biden a Joke? |

Promotion of a healthy lifestyle among the proletariat will allow more surplus value for distribution by the Politburo. So, tomorrow, your neighborhood will fall out in formation at your local elementary school, where one of our apparatchiks will lead you in two hours of calesthentics. Then he will march you to the field for some wheat sickling. You will be healthy. Or else. |

How is expenditures in MA. going to support health in any other state? Pork is targeted money to a district or stat that does not benefit the country as a whole.
I too drive, and use, by many areas that are designated for walking and biking and don't find them getting used. Many go through areas that people do not feel are safe, so they get avoided. People walking and riding follow the same paths that the rest of the world does.
But again - how does an expenditure in MA support the health in any other state? |

"She's like the ex-girlfriend they're SO over, never want to see again, have already forgotten about - really, it's O-ver - but they just can't stop talking about her" Forgetting Sarah Palin by Ann Coulter.
Liberals think Palin is dumb and conservitves know that Biden is dumb so lets call it a draw.
If liberals will stop all mention of Sarah Palin for 24-hours than conservatives will stop calling Biden stupid. Deal?

A massive shipwreck for the world's most envied healthcare system. Eyes Wide Shut. Clueless.
A vast Grift from the Party of Snakeoilers. |
|
um, isn't riding a bike healthy?
Minnesota’s U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar has long pushed bike paths as a safe way to school and good health. |
|
|
C, have you ever tried riding a bike in Minnesota during the winter, in warm clothes? If the cold, or the ice or the snow doesn't get ya, getting your fluffy snow pants caught in the chain will! I would not call it a safe way to get to school or anywhere else -- I'd call it "hazardous to health"! |

PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW THIS BILL TO PASS!! The very idea that government dictate & ration patient care is dangerous and certainly NOT HELPFUL in designing a healthcare system that works for ALL. Health care is NOT a RIGHT. It is a "COMMODITY" which you have a right to purchase; i.e., a car, house, food. It is a commodity provided by persons who are educated to perform the service. For AARP to endorse this Plan is committing suicide! I don't want my health care rationed nor do I want the government deciding that I am too old or not healthy enough to have life-saving treatment. I do not want government having direct access to my bank accounts or my health records. How many of the 50 million people who are without health insurance are illegal immigrants who are "bleeding" this country dry? If we were to deport them and take them off our welfare/Medicare rolls, billions a year would be saved. Please ask each Representative, Senator and the President ... Are YOU going to "OPT OUT" of your health care plan for the one you are approving for the rest of us? __Yes __No That's the ONLY answer we need...then, make sure you remember their answer when casting your next vote! Michele, Bless you! You are "the voice of reason." |

* Pooling for small businesses, the self - employed, and others. All consumers should have equal opportunity to buy the lowest-cost, highest-quality insurance available. Individuals should benefit from the economies of scale currently available to those working for large employers. They should be free to purchase their health coverage without tax penalty through their employer, church, union, etc.
* Pay for performance, not activity. Roughly 75% of health-care spending is for the care of chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes—and there is little coordination of this care. We can save money and improve outcomes by using integrated networks of care with rigorous, transparent outcome measures emphasizing prevention and disease management.
* Refundable tax credits. Low-income working Americans without health insurance should get help in buying private coverage through a refundable tax credit. This is preferable to building a separate, government-run health-care plan.
These steps would bring down health-care costs. They would not bankrupt our nation or increase taxes in the midst of a recession.
They are achievable reforms with bipartisan consensus and public support.
All they require is a willingness by the president to slow down and have an honest discussion with Americans about the real downstream consequences of his ideas.
