Romney 35, McCain 29, Huckabee 15, Ron Paul 10, Giuliani 4?
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 6:33 PM
That's what Geraghty the Indispensable is hearing.

Cue the fat lady for Huck and McCain.  The former can't get above 15% with a huge effort, and McCain can't win in an open primary state, one crucial to the fall, even when the Dems take a bye?

Sooner or Later
The real Conservatives will step up and take back from the liberals their right to select the Republican nominee.... Then, McCain will be sent back to Washington to once again embrace his Liberal friends and harrass more Conservative causes........ and Huckleberry will be sent back to preach and support more taxes in Arkansas so that we can relocate those spoiled Guantonomo prisoners to American soil.(and, for the sake of all of us, it would be great if he would take a class or two, this time from an accredited college, on current affairs and foreign affairs.... it's embarrassing).

It would be nice if that would start to happen in South Carolina this Saturday.... but I don't hold out alot of hope....

Not a bye.
First of all, dude, get off Romney's jock!

Secondly the Dems did not take a bye. Some 237,000 of them got out of their houses in frigid weather to vote for 'Nobody'???

I don't think so. The most important news from last night's primary was that a lot of Dems really, really don't like Hillary. The Republican race is still w-i-d-e open and your boy has a long way to go.

Congratulations Mitt
I congratulate Governor Romney on his victory tonight. He and his campaign worked hard and effectively to make sure Michigan voters welcomed their native son with their support. You have won the round and earned your celebration tonight. I salute you, and offer you my genuine good wishes for the night.

John McCain

This was a tough fight and Mitt Romney and his supporters deserve a lot of credit. Congratulations to you all.

Over the past two months, Romney's political
operatives and church leaders have discussed
building a grass-roots political organization using
alumni chapters of Brigham Young University's
business school around the country. More recently,
representatives of BYU, which is run by the church,
and Romney's political action committee have

The president and prophet of the Church of Jesus

McCain can win, Romney can't
I'm not a McCain fan, I'm a Fred fan. Having said that , anyone who doesn't think McCain can win the general election is a fool who only gets his or her news from Hugh Hewitt. McCain leads Clinton in the latest Rasmussen poll by 11 point. McCain leads Hillary in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Oregon, and Washington according to Survey USA.

On the other hand, Mitt trails Hillary by 18 points in the latest CNN poll. He trails Hillary badly in Ohio and Florida according to Survey USA. Without either state, Mitt loses. He also does no better than a tie with Hillary in Kentucky and Alabama. We'll see how giddy the Mittbots are on election night in November when Mitt loses in an electoral landslide.

Okay, now you can celebrate Hugh....
Romney has just been called the winner. :)

Now Huck and McCain need to win in SC, or they are in big trouble, especially Huck, heading into Super Tuesday. (McCain has better chances, but not airtight.) Romney needs to carry some momentum by winning or coming in second in SC, and then winning Florida, to head into Super Tuesday viable.

Though so far, Rudy's campaign strategy of divide and conquer is holding up. We shall see how it goes once the race starts.

If Romney wins....
I do view it as a big loss for McCain, for the following reason.

The economy is no doubt central in tonight's primary. This demonstrates that on matters economic, McCain is a disaster. (He himself admits ignorance in economic matters.) The economy, for better or worse, is beginning to trump Iraq. (Contrary to what the talking heads said years ago.)

For Huck, hey, if he places third, that's a victory for him. nobody but the most deluded Huckabee fanboi expected him to perform strong in this state. It bodes well for him going into SC, where it could conceivably turn into a Romney/Huck rematch.

Romney & McCain
One likely reason why Romney appears to have won MI is the desperation that pervades auto workers and those in the symbiotic economy there. McCain basically leveled with the auto workers, telling them that many of those manufacturing jobs aren't going to be coming back. He basically related the realities of a world economy and cheap foreign labor to them.

They were underwhelmed.

Now here comes Mitt! He'll bring back all those jobs! Hell even Packard and Studebaker will be back in business after Mitt works his magic!

They were elated!

Sigh

Agree, and I haven't heard a sensible scenario explained to me where Romney can win. With inflation at it's highest rate in over twenty five years, the economy is likely to trump Iraq as the number one issue among the electorate. A candidate with the patrician demeanor of Romney is going to be at a huge disadvantage, when the odds are stacked against any Republican already.

There are polls open in the western part of Michigan which would be more McCain country. No one will call this race until after 8:00 central time.

I will say that the exit polls give Romey a 6pt win but the internals on issue's seem to make it closer. 53% want to cut deficit. 43% would rather cut taxes. It looks like a Romney win, but a little less then 6pts. Not that it really matters.

This is the last state where
Democrats, liberals, and independents have a say in choosing our nominee. From here on out, conservatives, finally, will have the opportunity to select our candidate. The rubber meets road. True conservatives will rise to the top and those who are not will fall. 3 candidates are clearly the most conservative and that will be revealed over the next 3 weeks. Hugh Hewitt will be proven to be absolutely correct, in stating that the nominee will be Romney, Rudy, and, maybe Fred. Many on this blog owe HH an apology because your comments over the last several weeks have been nothing short of despicable, but, he should not hold his breath.
It's clear to all, that, John McCain cannot get anywhere close to enough Republican votes to win the nomination. McCain is only popular with independents and moderates, after tonight, they disappear and will no longer be a factor, therefore, John McCain is finished and should drop out.
Looks like Huckleberry will come in at about 15% in Michigan, after an 11% showing in New Hampshire, means, if he does not win South Carolina, he's finished and should drop out as well.
Great night for conservatives, bad night for moderates and liberals.

Just how much support from independents will Romney be able to get? He spent vast amounts of money in Iowa and NH for two silver medals. When I see a glimmer of hope that Romney can feasible draw the support of a generous portion of conservatives, I'll be less worried about him as nominee. And as far as his deficiency of support among evangelicals, if he can draw them in SC, I'll take another look as well. Without enough evangelicals and independents, Romney will probably fair about as well as Dole in 1996.

"Majority of the conservative base" isn't enough. That group is just too small.

Before Mitt flipped, he was attractive to independents. He'd have to flop, which if he wins the nomination I'm sure he would, but then he'd lose the base and the middle.

Romney is not electable.

Now back to CU-NCSU.

economy & Mitt
If indeed the economy worsens (or is perceived to be doing so) then Romney's business experience should be a plus.

Should. But I imagine there will be spin against him for it.

In business, you know what you're shooting for but you deal with the markets and the competition you face at any given moment. I see Mitt's gubernatorial record along the same lines: the man got elected in Massachusetts - !! - and managed a much more conservative track record there than anyone else could have pulled off. No small achievement.

Assuming a Republican is elected to the White House this time around, he is going to have to deal with a hostile Dem presence in Congress. Romney has slowly gained my support as likely to be able to pull that off without the heartfelt buy-in of a McCain or Huckabee. And while I like a lot of Fred's positions, he has yet to demonstrate he can lead and manage anything larger than a slow off the ground campaign.
beaumandy66 writes: Tuesday, January, 15, 2008 8:08 PM
Whacker... whacky thinking...
Anyone who thinks McCain can win the general election is totally confused and ignorant regarding the GOP and how this election will work.

The conservatives I know will support Romney if he is our guy even if Romney is not their fist choice. But these same people will never vote for McCain. McCain loses a huge section of the base not to mention the support of Rush and the other strong conservative leaders who fight the lib media. McCain would get blown out by Hillary or Obama because the base will not show up.

Romney however is not a RINO like McCain and he would get the support of the majority of the conservative base when it came time to vote. Simply put.... McCain sucks and anybody who supports him are responsible for hurting the GOP and putting a Dim in the White House.
Thaale writes: Tuesday, January, 15, 2008 8:08 PM
McCain and Huckabee are toast
This humiliating loss has pretty much ruined both of them nationally. I suppose that like Tancredo they'll remain on the ballots of SC and NV since it's too late to remove their names, but practically speaking hardly anyone will vote for them.

According to today's Rasmussen poll, between them McCain and Huckabee commanded the support of 43% of the Republican electorate. If one of the remaining candidates can pick up the lion's share of that former former it would be a nice little augmentation of whatever current support he enjoys.

Who stands to benefit the most from the diminution of those two? Probably everyone will pick up a point or two, but I think for obvious reasons Romney will collect almost all of JM and MH's former voters.

AP on Romney's "candor gap"
Johnson, Glen. 31 December 2007. Associated Press
http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=213&sid=1318207
BOSTON (AP) - As a presidential contender, Mitt
Romney has the looks, the money and the
campaign machine. He also has something of a
candor gap.

When confronted with questions that might conflict
with his message of the day or political record, the
Republican candidate has shown a tendency to bob
and weave or simply dismiss history. He has done
so all year, providing an easy target for his
opponents.
==
As the year has progressed, there have been more
examples, not just of artsy language, but of
ignorance of or embellishments about his personal
and political history.

In April, Romney said, "I've been a hunter pretty
much all my life," only to have aides reveal he had
gone hunting only twice at the bookends of his life:
once, during a summer visit to an Idaho ranch as a
15-year-old, and again, in 2006, when he
participated in a big-donor excursion to a Georgia
game preserve on behalf of the Republican
Governors Association.

A subsequent check with state officials revealed no
hunting license for Romney in any of the three
states where he has homes, and Romney himself
later confirmed he did not own any guns. The ones
in his house, which he had mentioned publicly, were
owned by his son Josh.

I love how you guys put so much stock in the wisdom of Joe Klein and Daily Kos in why Romney is looking like the winner. If the left is angry at someone or is spending so much time telling their people to vote for a certain candidate, it's good news for whoever they are talking about, in this case Romney.

The problem for you is that Mitt is finally striking a chord with the key issue that will decide the election: the economy. And today's Dow is another indication that we need someone who can run an economy, unlike McCain who will stifle growth with his piece of crap legislation.

I think it's coming down to Mitt and Giuliani they are the only ones with the experience and the plans that will help us win in November.

There is a reason why pundits said this was a must-win state for Mitt. If Mitt had lost only because a large majority of dems voted for McCain, that would be survivable - but not otherwise.

So good for Mitt. Hopefully this takes away McCain's momentum and eventually drives him out.

Wouldn't it be sweet that if after the polls close FOX asks Giuliani why he thinks Ron Paul has beaten him 2 out of 3 primaries. Better yet they should use Carl Cameron's question and ask Giuliani about his electability.

I'd be happy to see Mitt carry MI at any margin and keep this race open until the convention; the longer we go without making a choice the more important the economy will become as the overriding issue of this election! Romney is the undisputed winner when the focus is economics, McCain and Huckabee aren't even in the same league. Those who support Huckabee on the basis of morality or McCain on the basis of security are miopic one issue voters, the real threat to this country is of an economic nature. Fact is legislating morality is a moot point, people will always be people. Electing a president in defense of another terrorist attack is also futile, we can't know where or when that could happen again so ther's no sense obsessing over the potential. all we can do is the best we can do; G W Bush wasn't expecting 9-11 before it happened, some things have to be delt with on the spot!

Did notice that Crystal and Barnes were very up towards Mitt tonight. Not their usually pushing of McPain. They finally admitted that McPain did not win the Republican vote in New Hampshire but the Indies and Dems.

Well, this will shut these talking heads up for awhile.

thrifty Huck gets huge bang for buck
[Hugh]"Cue the fat lady for Huck and McCain. The former can't get above 15% with a huge effort"

How many millions of dollars did Multimillionaire Mitt spend in MI?

How much did Huckabee spend there?

Kirkpatrick, David D. 13 January 2008. "Huckabee Splits Young Evangelicals and Old Guard" _The New York Times_
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/13/us/politics/13huckabee.ht ml?ex=1200891600&en=4e9c88cd12ae3a67&ei=5065&partner=MYWAY
In Michigan, the Huckabee campaign had spent no
money, hired no staff and had no office until last
Wednesday, six days before the primary.

In South Carolina, a make-or-break state for Mr.
Huckabee and one where evangelicals are
expected to make up more than a third of the
Republican primary voters, the Huckabee campaign
had only a state manager and two paid staff
members until about two weeks ago.

It's called Obsession.

Or is it Desperation?

I used to really enjoy this blog. But now Hugh has become a one-trick pony. Quite sad.

Was Iowa or NH a 'modest defeat' for Romeny? No, the MSN said it was pretty much a rout, although the spread was not that great. Was Wyoming, where McCain and Huck placed way down the pack... was that a 'modest defeat' for them?

Last week, a win was a win. This week, it's only a small victory. Yea, I get the double call.

Told you MR 90 mins ago
and InTrade had it about noon.

MR will actually win by 7%+
MH will be closer than Gehreaty estimates

JM and MH detest MR. JM is out of money but is great at free media. If JM does not win SC, he is gone and will endorse RG pre Florida ...which will make RG a winner with north of 40% in Fl. If MH does not win SC, he is out ... will also endorse RG.

Watch RG step on the ad's big time but MR can out spend him.

On 1/16 an Oregon court will rule on whether the "push poll" project being done by the NH AG can go forward. If it does, trust me ... problems for MR.

Here's what the leftists are saying ...
From MyDD (http://www.mydd.com/); the leftists are quite happy with a Romney win.

Assuming McCain does lose, as I think he will, that will be two primaries in a row where the momentum garnered from a prior win has dissipated in mere days, perhaps a sort of citizens' revolt against the tendency of the media to coronate a winner? At a more local level, it will also speak to the success of Sen. Levin and Gov. Granholm to inject the economy into the presidential debate through their moving the Michigan primary up; in fact, it may end up having singlehandedly derailed the candidacy of the strongest candidate the Republicans have, [i.e., McCain] one for whom the economy is an admitted weakness.

Cue the fat lady for Huck and McCain?
I really am at somewhat of a loss for words when I read nonsense like this. Has Hugh seen any national polls? Has he seen South Carolina polls?
To read a modest victory in what is Mitt's place of birth as a crushing defeat of Huck and McCain is intellectually bankrupt. It's just mindless cheerleading.

I don't think Huck would be viable in November, but I haven't seen a damn thing to show me that Mitt would either. The more people are exposed to him, the more they are resistant to his candidacy. McCain has more name recognition than any other Democrat or Republican (save Hillary) in this campaign, and matches up vastly better than Romney in a hypothetical contest with her.

McCain is not my ideal choice, but pragmatism has to come into play at some point. McCain might very well be our only chance to avoid three new Ruth Bader Ginsburgs ruling the USSC for the next twenty years, but Hugh is all about boosting Mitt (and book sales). Years from now after we have been besotted with Warren Court II for a generation that book might serve as reminder of the follies of driving off a cliff in a quest for ideological purity.

whacker - I don't agree
Romney will lose in the general, but even if he does, we would not lose the core principles of our party. With Huckabee and McCain we will lose not only the general, but more importantly, the ideals which have served us so well.

I'm not willing to sign on for that.

Will Dem Voters Decide Today’s Michigan GOP Primary? http://www.mgwashington.com/index.php/news/article/will-de ms-decide-michigan-gop-primary/265/ ("In a twist, blogger Markos Moulitsas (of the Daily Kos, the nation’s largest Democratic blog) is calling on Michigan Democrats to vote for Romney, not McCain, as a way to hurt the GOP’s chances for the White House this fall. “Bottom line, if Romney loses Michigan, he’s out. If he wins, he stays in,” writes Kos. “And we want Romney in, because the more Republican candidates we have fighting it out, trashing each other with negative ads and spending tons of money, the better it is for us,” adds Kos. “We want Mitt to stay in the race, and to do that, we need him to win Michigan.”

Do you agree with Huckabee that taxes = hope? If so, you're not conservative.

Do you think his question about Mormons to the NYT reporter was "authentic" or innocent as he claims? If so, the wool is over your eyes.

Huckabee is a very calculating and deceptive candidate. The floating cross, the "Christian Leader" ad, the negative ad pull which was created with the expectation that the press would distribute it for free, and his disingenuous quick change on amnesty reveal Huckabee to be the least trustworthy candidate running.

A Romney win
A Romney win makes South Carolina up for grabs when it was trending towards McCain. McCain, Huckabee, or Romney could conceivably take the state, and any of them could then go on to take Florida.

Romney is a 35 state loser
Hugh can do a victory dance all he wants, but let's see how he feels when Romney loses 35 states in the general election. It will be 1964 all over again. But hey, at least Hugh will made all that money off his book.

I don't care for McCain, but he can win. Romney can't, no matter how much money he spends. In a year so stacked against Republicans, better to win with McCain then go with purity and lose.

I'll say it right now. Republicans just lost the White House tonight. Thanks Michigan.

DailyKOS Democrats vote for Mitt
It certainly looks like the plan hatched by the crazy leftists at DailyKOS is working (http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=59649). It wasn't Republicans that got Romney the win; it was Democrats.

See: http://www.cnjonline.com/opinion/party_25178___article.htm l/michigan_voters.html "Why did Democrats vote for Romney? First, Michigan’s Democratic primary was meaningless because the party took away the state’s delegates as punishment for rescheduling its primary in opposition to party rules (Hillary Clinton ran unopposed).

Second, a Romney victory keeps the self-financed candidate in the race, meaning he pays for more attack ads and the Republican base has less time to unify before a tough presidential race.

Third, it takes some legitimacy away when Republican delegates are gained through Democratic voters.

The idea gained steam last week when liberal blogger Markos Moulitsas suggested it. Soon after, John Bambanek of blogcritics.org asked the Michigan attorney general to investigate criminal charges against Moulitsas and his Daily Kos blog for possibly advocating voter fraud."

Huckabee did well
For the Huckster to get 15% when he only got on the national radar about a month ago is a tremendous achievement. I'm not one of his supporters but Hugh, overwhelmed with emotion because of the likely Romney win, is totally understimating this guy. Coming off this I think he's going to win SC.

If Joe Klein doesn't like Mitt Romney (and he doesn't), then Mitt Romney is definitely the Republican candidate for me!

Caveats? What caveats? I don't have to
...show you no stinkin' caveats!

But Geraghty made the point that this is early exit polling, the weather is improved from this morning and voting is still going on. Might have been a good idea to be a little less gleeful, and a little less ready to "cue the fat lady."

Especially after NH, where the exit polls proved useless on the Dem side and the whole polling industry is suffering from a credibility gap.

Huckabee for President
I'm sorry the voters of Michigan have had the wool pulled over their eyes if it's true that Romney may win there. SC will be a different story. Hopefully, he'll get trounced there and Huckabee will win. He's the most authentic and electable candidate and he's plenty conservative for me and I'm a pretty conservative person.

Democrates and Independents stayed home
according to the exit polls. Which means, romney may have actually won the republican votes.

It would be nice if McCain and Huckabee had the class to have stuck in the state, in case they had to conceed or give a victory speech.

Guess MI means diddly for them.

Joe Klein on "the Romney garbage barge"
Klein, Joe. 28 December 2007. "Pulling a Romney"
http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2007/12/pulling_a_romney .html
And I've got to say, having covered a lot of campaigns, I've seen dirtier (Bush in South Carolina in 2000), angrier and far more extreme, but...
I've never seen a candidate who showed such arrant disrespect for the public--and for himself. Indeed, Romney has performed a political self-lobotomy. Not just on his brain, which seemed an impressive instrument a year ago, but also on whatever nagging moral sense he might have had. He did this in order to conform--in the primaries, at least--to every last polling preference, no matter how skeevy, of his party's base. Worse, he has chosen to demagogue on issues--like illegal immigration--where his own record shows a history of moderation...and an embarrassing tendency toward private hypocrisy (Those gardeners!) I've also never seen a candidate so loathed, privately, by his competitors.

I'm not as sure as Edsall that the public has caught on to this, that the Romney garbage barge is headed south.
CDubber writes: Tuesday, January, 15, 2008 6:45 PM
But how will Huckabee...
...rewrite the constitution if he doesn't win the Presidency?

http://www.thoughttheater.com/2008/01/mike_huckabiatch_slap s_the_constitution.php

It's Huckabee doing what he does best - whipping the religiously-enthusiastic into a frenzy with empty promises and dramatic pandering.

I ask again: why is this clown even in double-digits in this race?

Note to voters (particularly religious voters): God, as far as anyone knows, has *not* endorsed Mike Huckabee as His preferred candidate, no matter what Mike Huckabee would have you believe.
