The Dangers of a Messianic Campaign
Posted by: Michael Medved at 11:30 AM

The prestigious British weekly The Economist recently ran an editorial commentary speculating on the direction of a potential Obama administration. After pointing out that the Democratic candidate relied more and more on centrist, Clintonite advisers, The Economist still warned about the inflated expectations of “change” surrounding Obama’s campaign.

“The ambition of Obama’s team is exciting,” the editorial declared, “but in office it could be dangerous…. The lynchpin of his campaign has been a faith, almost messianic, in his personal excellence. If that fades, the whole operation could collapse in frustration and disillusionment.”

The Obama candidacy, in other words, highlights the risks in building a cause around a charismatic individual, rather than issues or principles. The longer the candidate avoids concrete commitments on issues or declarations of principle, the greater those risks become.

Obama = Dinkins
Obama reminds me a lot of David Dinkins when he ran for Mayor in NYC back in 1989. The press made him out to be some hero to all. Minorities loved him, the feminists loved him, the press loved him, and he could do no wrong in the primary and general election. He got a free pass on all his socialist ideas. A report even came out that he did not even properly pay his taxes, and the press did not go after him.

Dinkins won in a squeaker. He won with about 51% of the vote. Everyone who voted for him thought he was going to be this great racial uniter; city life would improve, etc. However, from day one the Dinkins administration was a complete disaster. Racial tensions got worse, crime rose and overall NYC quality of life got worse.

If Obama wins, his four year will be a total disaster like nothing we have seen since Jimmy Carter. He will raise taxes to socialist European levels. Windfall profit taxes on oil companies will lead to higher prices at the pump.

The one difference between Obama and Carter is Carter gave us the greatest President of the 20th century in Ronald Reagan. Although whoever beats Obama in 2012 will be a major improvement, they will be no Ronald Reagan.

Nee
Kimberly is going to learn real fast if Obama is elected that her gay Prius is not going to help much with gas at $10 a gallon and crude at $200 after he approves windfall profit taxes on the oil companies.

Axelrod--Deval Patrick
David Axelrod is one of these campaign people who simply packages candidates.

I heard recently that he packaged Massachusetts's current governor--presentable black guy. Similar approach that he's taking with Obama. I also heard Patrick's not doing a very good job.

Can anyone chime in about Patrick? Kimberly doesn't count as a Connecticut resident. What little credibility she had she torched recently when defending her Senator Dodd in the Countrywide mess.
Dan writes: Friday, June, 20, 2008 12:49 PM
Deval Patrick Results
I was going to mention the parallels between Obama and Patrick. But, Sam beat beat me to it. Take a look at the Weekly Standard and do a search for the name. There are a lot of articles covering him. Dean Barnett especially covers the story. Patrick's been a disaster and his popularity has plummeted. You just can't make all these enormous promises and implement them pragmatically. I really hope we don't have to find it out again with Obama as president.

Sorry for this off the point post,
but I would be intersted in Medved's views about Pat Buchanan's column about the holocaust. Given that Medved was outraged that Germany built a memorial for homosexual victims across the street from the maim holocaust memorial in Berlin, I would expect him to vigorously denounce Buchanan's column. Oh wait, that would assume Medved actually had some kind of principles.

Rashum..
Some very good and scary points. The educated and practical people know that Obama will be a disaster for our country and the free world. Accept this is a much more dangerous world than in 1989. All we can do is pray that God will protect us to some degree.

Medved rigourously denounced Buchanan on his show and has called Buchanan and anti-semite on many occasions.

Belive me there is no love lost between those two.

-- Even off-topic you're wrong. You might disagree with some or most of Medved's expressed, and clearly delineated, principles (I do) but to deny that he has any at all is just silly. Also, who says that YOU get to determine what topics he addresses in this blog? Call him up today (it's 'Open Mind Friday' on his radio show) and ask him directly ... and use your screen name; I want to hear what you sound like.

It appears the only

associates from his past that Obama has remained committed to are his wife and daughters. Still, based on what we know of his past, I would caution them to remain alert to being cast off if they were to become a liability to fulfilling his ambition.

Obama is a candidate full of ambition with little to no experience or record of accomplishments. He is completely unqualified to become and serve as POTUS.

Messiahs
Ancient Israel had multiple claimants to the messiah title before Jesus arrived. One such messiah led a revolt fairly early in the Roman occupation after Herod's death. He and his followers ended up on crosses lining the roads to Jerusalem.

I'm not suggesting a similar fate for Obama and his followers. However, anytime people expect one man to solve all their problems, SOMETHING will come unglued and there will be disasters of one sort or another.

I'll stick with normal imperfect humans who MAY try to govern by the Constitution.

As usual
As usual, most of the liberal comments are sarcastic, rude, or off topic. It's much easier to insult people than to engage in an meaningful exchange of ideas, or perhaps this is a sustitute for ideas that don't exist. Whatever the case, I am no longer upset or offended. I'm simply bored. And whenever someone insults instead of discusses, my opinion of them sinks lower than before.

For example, all Kimberly ever does is insult people. When I see her name, I ignore her comments. I've heard it all before, and I'm simply have better things to do with my time.

Patrick is coming or his here now in CA. He is talking to Hollywood about filming there. And he is talking to someone else, but I can't remember the group. Okay, I looked it up because it was bugging me, bio-tech firms.

There was a blip on the news the othere night. The news person said that MASS was not real happy with him and feel that he is trying to hang out with too many stars in Hollywood. Shocking.

I remember Axelrod from Edwards campaign and my friend reminded me that he worked as a consultant on Spitzer's Gov race.

Talking to Our Enemies

Michael will wait forever for Obama to declare his principles if he shuts his ears whenever Obama does just that.

I'm grateful to be able to vote for a candidate who is not afraid to talk to our enemies, and I look forward to a change from our present state of old men doing evil out of fear.

Before this campaign is over a neologism will be added to the OED:Obamamendacity. His prissy picture
will complement the entry. BIG BROTHER~NEW SPEAK is not enough. And if this arrogant high-sider Pol from the depth-gutter of the Chicago machine is elected --after our nation is attacked in a strike that will make 9/11 look like T-ball practice--there will be a SECOND AMERICAN CIVIL WAR(WWII internment zones like Manzanar will look like Day Care picnic Centers).

Allies
Regardin talk of invading Pakistan (which, to be fair, Obama said he would go after targets there w/out Pakistani approval, not invade), this is actually something I agree w/. There are different levels of alliances. I think our alliance w/ Pakistan is quite different than w/ say, a country like Great Britain.

Axelrod
Is infamous as a henchman for the Daley Chicago political machine. He's been on Daley's payroll for years and apparently considers himself somewhat of a "king maker" by all accounts. I find him much scarier than Obama...he's a behind the scenes kind of guy who puppeteers his candidates into office. The Daley MO by history is to keep a tightknit group of loyals surrounding the candidate...all the while grooming the image. That's exactly what we're seeing and I believe the American people, especially the youth, are being duped.

If I wanted to live in a Socialist country I would move to one. Obama is scary, because his "change" is going to ruin this country and head us in a Socialist direction. He isn't interested in national security, he will probably downsize the military, such as Clinton did. He will pander to Iran, Saudi Arabia, Mexico. He wants open borders, he comes from a sanctuary city.He is going to tax everyone to death.. His judgement is suspect because of his association with Rev. Wright, he listened to this hate monger for 20 years and didn't hear that junk? He disavows the guy when it is clear that it is going against him. He is slick. I think he is the antichrist. He lied about public financing. He finds nothing wrong with Farrakhan, or Ayers another terrorist. He is scary , scary, scary. I guess I am just a "typical white woman" whatever he thinks that is.

Obama
"The lynchpin of his campaign has been a faith, almost messianic, in his personal excellence. If that fades, the whole operation could collapse in frustration and disillusionment.”

That will happen, but after he is elected. I suspect he'll be a one termer, unless the Democrats get wise and put him up as Ronald Reagan, and pass a massive tax CUT. He might survive and his party might do well for years to come. I don't think that will happen.

Could it be that even Europe is recognizing that Obama is a totally unstable--and rediculously collegiate--element? Even they are getting the jitters.

How far we have come...
When you compare the substance of campaigns today, especially Obama's, one can only long for the true debates of the past where substance dominated. Our founders weren't perfect but they had a handle on the issues...

I'll be looking for your companion article entitled 'The Dangers of a Maverick Campaign' soon - yeah, right...

'The McCain candidacy, in other words, highlights the risks in building a cause around a dubious reputation as a maverick, earned largley by abandoning the principals of his own party, rather than a consistent approach to issues or principles. The longer the candidate avoids concrete commitments on issues or declarations of principle, the greater those risks become.'

Right stuff, wrong message
Obama does in deed have charisma. But it is dangerous because he has the wrong message. See my blog 2012 for evidence that he is the beast from Revelation. You know, 666.

He came out of the ocean being born in Hawai, raised partly in indonesia and coming to the fore in Iowa, which the Lord made into and ocean for emphasis.

Who is in control here. It is predestined.

Do what you need to do to protect your self and loved ones.

Vote Substance not Charm & Personality
What is just as scary as the illusionist Obama, are his supporters who blindly accept his delu- sive gift of gab as if it were Gospel! When questioned, how is the super star going to bring his Santa claus, cure all our ills, message to fulfillment, they claim "because HE SAID SO! The Rookie has no special resume and his accomplish- ments are ordinary and minimal! I believe Obamas spell binding, beguiling words have captivated their hearts and left their minds emptied!
