McCain On Russia and Obama

Powerline's John Hinderaker rightly notes the bluntness with which John McCain is responding to Russia's brutality in Georgia. Putin will not be rooting for McCain this fall. Russia's supreme leader would rather have an empty suit in the White House as he works to reassemble as much of the old USSR as he can. (Gateway Pundit summarizes the Obama fecklessness of the past day: "FROM MILK TOAST INTERNATIONALIST TO BRAVE McCAIN-LIKE WARRIOR...In under 24 hours." Jennifer Rubin spots Obama's weakness as well and speculates that the Winnie-the-Pooh guy is weighing in with The One. Obama is making Jimmy Carter seem like strong drink)
With the focus on Georgia and the Olympics, not much attention was paid to McCain's radio address yesterday, but you should read it. It is a direct hit on Obama and the campaign he is running. The New York Times runs a story today that is all inside baseball and full of dire warnings about McCain's leadership style.
The real story from the campaign is that McCain has spent the past two weeks blasting away at Obama on Obama's greatest vulnerability: "fame without portfolio," as Lindsey Graham put it, the stark facts of Obama's empty rhetoric and achievement-free record. If McCain keeps this relentless focus up, the race will stay close and even rabid Obamians will begin to recognize that Obama is the riskiest and most radical major party presidential candidate in modern American political history.
Here's the McCain radio address:
Good morning, I'm John McCain. As you may know, the Democratic National Convention is just a couple of weeks away. It was four years ago, at the same gathering, that America heard a fine speech from an Illinois state senator named Barack Obama. He's done pretty well for himself since then. And the smart money in Denver is on another celebrated performance.
But even the most stirring speeches are easily forgotten when they're short on content. Taking in my opponent's performances is a little like watching a big summer blockbuster, and an hour in realizing that all the best scenes were in the trailer you saw last fall. In the way of running mates, Senator Obama should consider someone with a knack for brevity and directness, to balance the ticket.
In the meantime, let me take a stab at a plot summary of the Obama campaign: America is finally winning in Iraq, and he wants to forfeit. Government is too big, and he wants to grow it. Taxes are too high, and he wants to raise them. Congress spends too much, and he proposes more. We need more energy, and he's against producing it.
Energy in particular seems to confound Senator Obama, because if there is any problem that can't be solved by words alone it's America's need for secure and affordable energy supplies. So far, he's managed to come up with an energy plan that's so timid only OPEC and a few interest groups in his own party are happy with it. And this week, Senator Obama set about correcting that impression.
First there was his call for Americans to check their tires -- which is commonsense advice, but hardly has the makings of a national energy strategy. If we can't drill our way out of the problem, it seems even more unlikely that we can inflate our way out of it.
Next came Senator Obama's mention of offshore drilling -- formerly known in the Obama campaign as a "gimmick" and a "scheme." As more people notice that his answer to most every form of energy production is "no," my opponent tried to simulate a "yes." He pledges a vague willingness to possibly consider limited drilling as part of some hypothetical compromise at an undetermined date. Careful listeners are still waiting for an actual commitment to offshore drilling.
Apparently, Senator Obama was trying to get credit for changing his mind on drilling, without actually changing his position against drilling. This was the rare case of a politician actually hoping to be accused of a flip-flop. But even that would be giving Senator Obama's energy plan too much credit. As of today, he still has no plan to produce more oil by drilling offshore. And my opponent's most memorable flip-flop remains his frequent criticism of the Bush-Cheney energy policy, despite voting for the Bush-Cheney energy bill in 2005 -- a bill I opposed and voted against.
Finally, Senator Obama proposed to release oil from our nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve. For those keeping track, this comes exactly a month after he said he was firmly against using the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
A serious energy plan involves a lot more yes's than no's. And that is why I say yes to drilling, here and now. Yes to 45 more nuclear power plants to provide our country with electricity. Yes to clean coal technology, so that we can create jobs and use America's most abundant resource. Yes to renewable energy sources, so that we can shift away from petroleum over the long term. Yes to a break from the federal gasoline tax, so that our government helps you in a time of need instead of just adding to your costs. In short, yes to all of the above -- to a bold plan for achieving energy independence that starts today.
Regaining control over the cost and supply of energy in America will not be easy, and it won't happen quickly. But no challenge to our economy and security is more urgent. And you have my pledge that if I am president, we're going to get it done. Thanks for listening.
|
|
I have my criticisms but, the more McCain talks the more I'm liking it.
"This was the rare case of a politician actually hoping to be accused of a flip-flop. But even that would be giving Senator Obama's energy plan too much credit."
Ha...That was awesome.

Hughs ignorance of foreign policy is pitiful.
Here is a typical quote from a South Ossetian regarding Georgian, as opposed to Russian, troops:
Thousands of civilians have fled South Ossetia — many seeking shelter in the Russian province of North Ossetia.
"The Georgians burned all of our homes," said one elderly woman, as she sat on a bench under a tree with three other white-haired survivors of the fighting.
She seemed confused by the conflict. "The Georgians say it is their land," she said. "Where is our land, then? We don't know.

Which would explain the name-calling evidenced in most of your comments. Unacquainted with fundamental logic, you merely hurl epithets. Sort of like when Hugh resorts to calling paleocons "nutters", "pot bangers", etc. When the heat is on, that's all y'all have. |
|
ganged-up on! Sissy-Paleoloon & Blueclueless are bein' meanies. Hep' me...pwease, hep' me..!
Blue...Ummmm: You will note that, as usual, the Demowit-O'Bammy response is that we must luv those Rooskies 'till they can luv themselves. Oh, and let's talk'um till they beg for mercy.
99: Bazama may be qualified for Desk Sec'y in our Embassy in Chad. Nuthin'more. What a lame, silly, shallow joke. The more the Foreign Affairs stuff hits the Fan, the more it works in Johnny Little's favor and utterly against the Slick-Clueless-Chicago-Ward Healer-'Organizer'. Notice that merciless and well-reasoned blast from Blue, for instance!! Too EASY. Just too danged EASY.

Ever hear of the "genetic fallacy?" And did you notice that one of my sources was the Weakly Standard? |

Kimberly;
When you state that Russia can use the "oil weapon" against the United States it seems one way to diffuse that "oil weapon" is to have enough of our own oil to not need Russia's. The supply is within our borders and it just takes a decision by the left to accommodate not just alternative energy but also offshore, ANWAR and outer-continental shelf oil supply development. Do these COMBINED with conservation. The five initiatives are not mutually exclusive. |
|
Paleocons are to Leftoid Nutters. He even lists 'The Nation'(think, Pravda) and the NY Times(think, Izvestia)as reasoned sources. From a Conservative(alleged)?
So, Kimmy, Blue and Cicero. Whew.
dcb & g99: LUV It! But, come to think of it, O'Bammy's not nearly as qualified to be Ambassador to a major European Ally as the normal choices for the post. Better X that, 99. |
|
|
|
|
Sounds like Kimbicile makes an argument of more U.S. drilling if the Russians have an "energy weapon" meaning there oil. Kimmy steps in the $hit but makes a point anyway. |

"NATO hegemony is about as relevant as the Maginot Line. Meet and greet the 21st Century....was NATO hegemony effective in Clinton's Balkan strategy?"
Ask the Serbs.
"When Russia bombs Gemany we can talk about NATO...until then, pay attention and get a clue."
And does "paying attention" entail any kind of observations about how the West has courted Ukraine and former Warsaw Pact states to join NATO, hmmmmm? |
|
I love the comment about maybe somebody on Obama's campaign team Googling Georgia to figure out whose side we're on. What a bunch of media-created dweebs ! |
|
|
This could have an acceptance speech at the convention. McCain gets it just right and I was not a supporter in the beginning. As far as Obama: He would have done nicely as ambassador to Germany in a Clinton Administration! |
|
He is the better choice over Barack Obama this November. It is really that simple.
Work on getting more conservatives in congress, great. But no compromise with liberals? Ronald Reagan did it all the time. Jimmy Carter bucked all reaching over the isle. That is why Reagan was effective and Jimmy Carter sucked.

"Trains can sail?" That was a joke.. Ah say, that was a joke, son. (Hits him 8 times with a twoXfour)

Hope all the praying people are praying. Those who never do, should consider it. Can you imagine Obomination dealing with the Iran/Russian axis??? |

"NATO hegemony will proceed apace under either Juan Mequeno or the Obamessiah."
NATO hegemony is about as relevant as the Maginot Line. Meet and greet the 21st Century....was NATO hegemony effective in Clinton's Balkan strategy? NO. Was Turkey coddled after refusing access in the Iraq War? NO.
When Russia bombs Gemany we can talk about NATO...until then, pay attention and get a clue. |

this fall."
Spin it, Hugh baby.
Putin could probably care less. NATO hegemony will proceed apace under either Juan Mequeno or the Obamessiah. And if Putin is not afraid to stand up to Bush, as is clearly the case here, he won't be cowed by the GOP's Doddering Darling from Arizona. |

Everyone knows if we fought this war the way wars should be fought the enemy would have been toast in three days. It's because our concern for collateral damage to citizens and holy places that are getting our people killed.Don't belittle our armed forces because they are fighting with one arm tied behind their back. |

Reports are also have been circulating that the Georgian President has given permission to Israel to use Georgian airbases to attack Iran from the North. Russian Izvestya newspapers has claimed that Turkey was among the countries that supported Georgia in the recent strife in South Ossetia, by supplying the country with weapons, CNNTurk reported on Sunday. The Russian newspaper cited a Russian Defense Ministry report published three months prior that claims over the past four years Turkey has supplied Georgia with $45 million in weapons and ammunition, as well as training Georgian army officers |

BRIGGSY, if you disagree with certain policies, just say so, calling names, make you look bad. Why so much anger! Why not then, get involved politically and change things. President Bush, is still President of The United States, Do You Love America? Please have some respect for the office and the country you live in. Have a nice Sunday. |

a 527, doesn't it?! Too, too, tooooo easy.
Segue from the 7-year old girl Q & A to the little classroom boy telling Michelle-His-Belle, "I think we need to finish the job in Iraq!" Disolve to Charlton as Moses--this time at the Burning Bush--hearing O'Bammy's voice coming outta the fiery brush, "We ARE the ones WE'VE been waiting for."...Followed by Johnny Little's V.O. inquiring,"Does ANYBODY know what the heck HE's talking about?"
WHEW! Don't let that slick, clueless Kid near the car keys. Toast. |

with someone else. I am not a Ron Paul supporter. And by the way, read this
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D92FH9E80&show_arti cle=1
Maliki is DEMANDING a firm timeline for US withdrawal.
And as to McCain you are completely ignoring my point and reasons. I have a blog exactly for that reason. There is no reason setting me up as a straw dog to make your case. I am a conservative, not a Republican (not any more) and will not be voting for either of these nutty liberals. |
|
as stump-stupid as the late--but, never lamented--Commissar Bro-Bay...Here comes Hoosier.
NOT possible to parody that level of Vapidity.
Russia invading Georgia...USA and Iraq==Same. Not possible, I tell ya. |
|
What's the difference between Russia invading and the US invading Iraq? What a bunch of boobs. What can McCain do? Go to war? We can't even beat a third world country like Iraq and Afganistan. Face it, all McCain can do is wave his arms and look mean.
USA- No country for old McCain |
|
|
Let's get together and mix metaphors. Maybe I'll teach you something. Your comment does show some promise. Focus on 'some'... |
|
The McCain campaign needs to create a montage of these dual reactions. Drilling, FISA, The Surge, Iraq timelines, Tire pressure and all the other flip flops....then end it with one of the more absurd hopey changey comments followed by the answer to the 7 year old's question.
It would be much funnier and more effective than the Kerry "I voted for it before I was against it" gaffes. |

Here is John McCain's stand on the border:
http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/68db8157-d301-4e 22-baf7-a70dd8416efa.htm
You are living in the past on this issue, and McCain has moved forward to get in line with the majority.
Those who are supporting McCain are not "naive", but optimistic :) It is difficult to argue, that 46% of likely voters (Rasmussen poll today), who favor McCain, are "naive".
Let's be honest. For any republican to be president, they need blue dog dems and independents. McCain can win, Ron Paul will lose in this environment. It appears to me, you want Obama to win in hopes the country goes down hill, and in the next election a Ron Paul could win...now...which one of us is overly optimistic :)
|
|
Just keeps getting better every day. Open the facial cavern--insert the Reebok Outlet Store.
He's become such an embarrassing caricature of Himself that it's getting rougher to parody the Slick Clueless Kid. But, trust me, this flim-flam duel reaction to the Russian infamy will be adroitly(and RIGHTLY)snickered at in McCain ads no later than Wednesday.
Toast. Clueless TOAST. |
|
McCain is NOTHING like Ron Paul. He is much closer to his brother-at-arms Ted Kennedy. Mao Tse Tung is closer to Mother Teresa than Hitler too but the difference is worth considering. Same with Obama and McCain. Stop falling for the fear-mongering and race-baiting.
And we HAVE made our voices heard. Where have you been? Mars? We shut down Congress TWICE over the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill and even booted the GOP out in 2006 in between? You don't think McCain heard? What is wrong with you? Are you that naive?
McCain is completely invested on a personal and financial basis in delivering amnesty, open borders and the biggest bureaucratic boondoggle of all time, Cap and Trade, once elected. So is Obama. You can't squeeze an illegal ID card in the space that divides them on the most important issues.
If you think it comes down to splitting hairs to rationalize voting for one big government liberal or the other, join the other self-deluded nose holders. We are going to have the most liberal president ever either way. What Republicans need to do now is stop working at cross purposes by concentrating their money and efforts to getting conservative Republicans regain their Congressional seats. Support the House revolt. That McCain "gang of ten" solution is once again undermining party leadership to usurp the will of the people. So much for petitions.
Don't support the very obstacles to their success: Democrats and their "good friends", McCain and the RNC.
|
|
McCain could have issued an appeal to calm over the Russian invasion of Georgia. He could have issued an immediate call for both parties, Russia and Georgia, to agree to talks. I'm sure that would bring a lot of comfort to that bleeding woman, leaning against a corpse outside of her burning apartment building.
I've already read two MSM articles stating as fact what little the US can do about this Russian incursion.
As a former intern for Congressman Ron Paul, I take heart in McCain's response to this latest and boldest act of Russian aggression. |
|
In response to: Pasadena Phil Joe: Wiley Coyote would vote for McCain
People are not voting for the republican McCain "no matter what". Voters find the candidate that is closest to their values.
Ron Paul supporters should vote for McCain because he is closer in values than Obama. When McCain proposes a policy with which you disagree, like immigration, cap\trade, energy etc...you sign the grass roots petitions against his proposal, call your congressman etc...
American Solutions has over 1.4 million signatures for its drilling petition. In the age of the internet, voters can express themselves as a collective better than ever before.
McCain has shown that if the voices are loud enough, he will hear them. But it is the voters responsibility to be heard.
|
|
Would the folks who are telling us to vote for a 3rd party candidate be more honest.
Are you a libertarian?
I have nothing against libertarians. I respect their views, but a lone group can't win the White House.
The Republican party is a coalition of groups which requires compromises among the groups. The Democratic party is in the same situation.
This country is currently center-right moving to the center. McCain is center-right, and that is the position a Republican has to be in to win the White House. That's just the reality of the world we live in.
The President can't move the country to the right, only it's people can. A President is the reflection of the culture and values of a people.
|
|
Keep pitching the fear and race-baiting. No one here is going to vote for Obama and yet you never post any constructive reasons for voting for McCain. If Obama is THAT scary, maybe we shouldn't risk losing to him by running such a pathetic candidate as McCain. Nah, that would never occur to you.
The Republican Party needs to rebuild from the ground up. Congress is very important in November but supporting McCain is working at cross purposes. We can't be holding our congressmens' feet to the fire while also supporting their main nemesis who undermines them by collaborating with the "enemy". No more gangs of 14 or 10 or any other number. Our Congress heard us loud and clear in the amnesty debacle running up to the 2006 election, they also heard from us at the election and again afterwards. Now that we have their attention, let's add the next building block: torpedo the McCain/Kennedy alliance running both parties.
Too complicated Joe? Too scary? End of the world scenario? Maybe democracy is just too dangerous to be trusted to voters. We should just hand it to people like you who hold their noses and vote Republican NO MATTER WHAT! |
|
This should be an ad:
"In the meantime, let me take a stab at a plot summary of the Obama campaign: America is finally winning in Iraq, and he wants to forfeit. Government is too big, and he wants to grow it. Taxes are too high, and he wants to raise them. Congress spends too much, and he proposes more. We need more energy, and he's against producing it."
Third party voters may have the distinction of being more naieve than Obama cult members.
McCain/Romney is serious, grown up leadership ticket.
Obama/TBA is only going to be nothing more than a central casting ticket. Proof: Clooney is an unofficial adviser. http://jammiewearingfool.blogspot.com/2008/08/good-news-geo rge-clooney-now-unofficial.html

"Putin will not be rooting for McCain this fall."
Evil Putin is against McCain. I am definitely not for Putin. I do not want to see a weak President for our country, and that is exactly what we will get it Obama gets elected.
|
|
A convention that produces a different candidate. One who will uphold the laws of this country, not change them for the illegal aliens and their employers.
You noseholders are seriously underestimating how many of us don't care which liberal is elected, McCain or Obama. |
|
And anyone who realizes that and plans on either sitting out this next election or voting for another clown like Bob Barr, is as big of an idiot as the people who plan on voting for Obama.
There are Irish Setters in this country who would make a better President than Namby-Pamby Obambi. |

If people in California want drilling, this is a done deal.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20080810/news_mz1ed 10top.html
McCain is for drilling, and Obama is not. Why are some people here are so anti-McCain and pro 3rd party...when it rains lemons you make lemonade.
Some people here are treating McCain like an ex-wife that took them to the cleaners. He seems like a guy that will listen to the majority of voices when they speak...like on drilling and immigration. He has moved to the majority position which is what a politition should do unless it breaks a fundamental principle.

It really doesn't matter what shape what our military capability is in,we can't do anything. Not to mention sanctions, does any one even know the score of this endless circle jerk of what country is or is not honoring them? The key to all this is energy independence other wise we will always be negotiating from a position of weakness. |
|
PP writes: "Get McCain to step down. Make up a reason. Health, family, whatever. We need someone in place who represents what Americans want, not what the global monied elites demand."
For some one who writes well about most of the subject, you could have left out the "comedic" suggestion that McCain step down. McCain has already proven that his strengths in foreign affairs and military strategy exceeds that of even our current leadership. Even with Obama's 300+ foreign policy advisors, the man is still clueless by offering a waffling statement concerning this current confict. McCain knows what Americans want----a leader----even if some are confused. |
|
This is not the time to worry about Russia asserting dominance. We can't worry about Russia returning to Cold War status and threatening Europe. Don't be afraid of an Obama candidacy. Vote third party, choose anyone, it doesn't matter. And remember the GOP chose McCain, not the people who voted. If the GOP hadn't been able to "fix" the primaries, Duncan Hunter's 1% would have transformed into 70% and victory. Don't forget that.
/end sarcasm. |
|
Russia's oil production is in decline and their days as an oil exporter are numbered, particularly if they plan to re-assemble the Soviet Union by force and rebuild their economy. Those pipelines could prove to be very difficult to operate productively considering they will be surrounded by enemies for a thousand miles and the end terminals under siege, especially if they are eventually converted for importing oil instead of exporting. I'll have to take a look at that when I get in the office Monday.
Militarily, I really can't think of anything we can do and Europe is essentially disarmed except for our troops and missiles. |
|
|
You hit the nail right on the nose! |
|
|
The hardest part would be the tacking on the cloverleafs, however working in harmony with properly inflated tires we could save all the oil that new drilling would produce in the next ahh lets just throw out a number say ummm fifty years. |
|
This will be over. What are we going to do about it NOW! Nothing. We can't. This will be over very soon and it will be up to Europe and the UN. This is THEIR oil being threatened. We need to finish the job in Afghanistan and work on containing the oil coming out of Russia by denying them access to the end terminals and boycotting (good luck with THAT) that cannot be contained. Bush should have come home immediately but true to form, partied on after a lame statement.
Could we please find a real candidate next month? If Obama is really as bad as you RINOs believe and he gets elected, it will be the fault of the GOP for nominating a narcissistic globalist liberal of their own. Get McCain to step down. Make up a reason. Health, family, whatever. We need someone in place who represents what Americans want, not what the global monied elites demand. |

I realize that Hugh is merely citing the title posted on another blog, but let's be clear about this because we need to make sure that we are using the correct term when describing Obama.
Phonetically, that other blogger can be forgiven for writing "milk toast," but the term is "milquetoast," which had its origin in a cartoon character named Caspar Milquetoast, who was timid, meek, and unassertive person. When I think of Obama, I always recall the wimpy character that a law-school professor used for his hypotheticals: Milt Milquetoast.
At any rate, let's not forget Dick Morris's assessment of Obama from a few months ago: "Obama's weakness is weakness." I'd add many more weaknesses, but for this thread, weakness is all that needs to be highlighted.
