Does Unity Trump Policy?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 3:41 PM
This New York Times story examines Barack Obama's claim that he can be a political unifier, notwithstanding the fact that he has the most liberal voting record in the US Senate according to National Journal.

There is some skepticism in the piece -- even the pro-Barack Times concedes that "Mr. Obama does not come to the campaign with a reputation as one of the most accommodating bridge-builders in the Senate." But just imagine the outright ridicule that a conservative (say, Jim DeMint, National Journal's most conservative senator for 2007) would elicit if (as the New York Times reports about Barack) he insisted that he could unify the country simply because he was "confident that Americans were eager for a new kind of politics and were convinced that 'a lot of these old labels don’t apply anymore.'"

Judging from they story, Barack's argument is effectively that Americans care more about being "unified" (whatever that means) than about the substance of the policies that will govern them.  Does he actually believe that ideas and principles matter so little to regular American voters?

Obama
Obama is proving to be an empty shell. That is why when he is thumped there is a hollow ringing sound.

He has accomplished very little in his political career and has more often than not sat silently by or sat on the fence.

His spiritual mentor of twenty proved to be an extreme racist who hates America. Obama seems to have a propencity for surrounding himself with these types.

Obama's wife appears to have strong negative opinions of America and "whites".

Obama's speech made everything racial. He is the one making it a race thing.

Why with his lack of background and accomplishments would people want to make his president of the United States?

I believe we got the answer 8 years ago
Robin Toner won't recognize it as the answer because it was a Republican preaching the "uniter, not a divider" platitude. Of course, that didn't stop her from heaping praises on Bill Clinton for pretending he was a uniter, even as she bemoaned the fact that he had to pretend to move to the right.

I see that story as more of a bout of wishful thinking that the populace has moved so far to the left that an ultra-liberal can win without moving at all. I believe that answer is a two-word one, ending with "no".

Labels
Barack Obama doesn't want to be labeled Liberal, even though he is liberal. Without proper labels, how are we to know what we're buying?
