NYTimes' Frank Rich: "The GOP Stalinists Invade Upstate New York"
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 10:37 PM
New York Times liberal columnist Frank Rich graces us all with his pre-election "insight":
Barack Obama’s most devilish political move since the 2008 campaign was to appoint a Republican congressman from upstate New York as secretary of the Army. This week’s election to fill that vacant seat has set off nothing less than a riotous and bloody national G.O.P. civil war. No matter what the results in that race on Tuesday, the Republicans are the sure losers. This could be a gift that keeps on giving to the Democrats through 2010, and perhaps beyond.

The governors’ races in New Jersey and Virginia were once billed as the marquee events of Election Day 2009 -- a referendum on the Obama presidency and a possible Republican “comeback.” But preposterous as it sounds, the real action migrated to New York’s 23rd, a rural Congressional district abutting Canada. That this pastoral setting could become a G.O.P. killing field, attracting an all-star cast of combatants led by Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, William Kristol and Newt Gingrich, is a premise out of a Depression-era screwball comedy. But such farces have become the norm for the conservative movement -- whether the participants are dressing up in full “tea party” drag or not.

The battle for upstate New York confirms just how swiftly the right has devolved into a wacky, paranoid cult that is as eager to eat its own as it is to destroy Obama. The movement’s undisputed leaders, Palin and Beck, neither of whom has what Palin once called the “actual responsibilities” of public office, would gladly see the Republican Party die on the cross of right-wing ideological purity. Over the short term, at least, their wish could come true...
The more rightists who win G.O.P. primaries, the greater the Democrats’ prospects next year. But the electoral math is less interesting than the pathology of this movement. Its antecedent can be found in the early 1960s, when radical-right hysteria carried some of the same traits we’re seeing now: seething rage, fear of minorities, maniacal contempt for government, and a Freudian tendency to mimic the excesses of political foes. Writing in 1964 of that era’s equivalent to today’s tea party cells, the historian Richard Hofstadter observed that the John Birch Society’s “ruthless prosecution” of its own ideological war often mimicked the tactics of its Communist enemies.

The same could be said of Beck, Palin and their acolytes. Though they constantly liken the president to various totalitarian dictators, it is they who are re-enacting Stalinism in full purge mode. They drove out Arlen Specter, and now want to “melt Snowe” (as the blog Red State put it).
Dear God--it's hard to believe that this man is paid to give this kind of "insight."  First of all, it's always fun to see liberals try to apply some educational theory to why people are upset with the country's current state of affairs.  And, in the case of Rich, when their intellectual theories don't hold water, they just call it "Stalinism in full purge mode."

Second, I don't remember "driving out" Arlen Specter--I'm pretty sure he was holding the reigns on that wagon ride.  I do remember, however, bidding him farewell.

And is Rich really upset over a pun about melting Snowe?  I happen to be a fan of puns.  Besides, I think it's much more creative than the numerous showcases of "buck fush" we got to see for 8 years.  Give me a break.

It looks like Rich and other liberals are a bit "wee weed up?"  Matt Welch at Reason Magazine best responds to Rich's tirade:
For those of you keeping metaphorical score at home: Stalin's Great Purge (just to name his most famous one) included roughly 1,000 executions a day, over two years. The alleged Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin purge, meanwhile, has resulted...brace yourself...in a  moderate Republican suspending her campaign for Congress to make way for a conservative independent. Yeah, totally the same.
Thank you, Frank Rich, for your continuing dedication to utter ridiculousness; we'd be so lost without you.

After all they don't know anyone who would vote for Hoffman, Palin or McDonell, so it must be some alien conspiracy.

The way Rich acts is to be expected. He knows the situation is crucial for Obama and the ultra-left. Let's not expect this kind of vermin to have some honor as a journalist. He means only one thing; scorched earth from now on; Obama's administration has to survive!

They'll all sell their souls; whoever didn't do that at the start. All of the scum is running scared!

This just shows that the left is becoming terrified by the conservative counter-revolution, the likes we have not seen since 1980 under Reagan that is now spearheaded by Sarah Palin. This is hilarious, how is the freedom to voice your opinion about a political candidate "Stalinist"? This just shows how off the deep end the left is now going.

You know you've won the arguement when the other sides resorts to name calling. The left uses this childish ploy often, as rich has displayed here.

Frank Rich is unhinged
Rich, a theater critic mislead the audience. Jerri Thompson deserves top billing and Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and Bill Kristol are supporting cast members, but however Newt Gingrich supported Scozzafava, not Hoffman.

The GOP Stalinists gave voters a choice between a liberal progressive Democrat and a conservative Republican, which is unfair to the unhinged members of the liberal elite.

A sea-change!
Sarah Palin was always a conservative conservative. I know people who have known her from high school. I suspect Tim Pawlenty has mostly been a conservative conservative. These are people who gravitated to the GOP during its conservative phase under Reagan and the later-Contract with America crowd, but who aren't really Republicans so much as they are conservatives. What happened in NY-23 was a travesty. This woman was selected by "Republicans?" There's some question about whether she qualifies as a Republican if the GOP is supposed to be the conservative party. I happen to think the GOP is more interested in elections than platforms, so I'm not horribly surprised, but truly conservative Republicans were and they acted to forstall the GOP tap-dance to the left. If the GOP wants to represent conservatives, then it needs to put forth truly conservative candidates. Frank Rich believes that's a recipe for disaster because he can't conceive of a right-of-center country that is moving more to the right as its population ages and its younger folks face hard economic times (both scenarios tend to build conservativism). He's wrong because he's isolated; he doesn't know any conservatives. That's okay. He'll be utterly surprised at the election results and dumbfounded when this mistaken attempt at ballot-box messaging is driven out of office next November and then we wave goodbye to the majority of them, including the anointed one, come 2012.

Those who refuse to learn from history are destined to repeat it. Mr. Rich is apparently historically-challenged.

Ah, Mr. Rich....Bone-Up on your.....
...definitions before you start applying radical designations, erroneously, to various groups of innocent Americans.

Let's play show and tell, shall we? I'll show you "Wikipedia's" definition of "Stalinist" and you all tell me (now be objective) who or what group it most specifically represents, OK. Let's get started Mr. Rich!

Definition of "Stalinist", per Wikipedia: "The term implies an inherently OPPRESSIVE SYSTEM of EXTENSIVE GOVERNMENT spying, extrajudicial punishment, and political "purging", or ELIMINATION OF POLITICAL OPPONENTS either by direct killing (not applicable) or through exile, and it involves a state (administration) MAKING EXTENSIVE USE OF PROPAGANDA to establish a PERSONALITY CULT around an ABSOLUTE DICTATOR TO MAINTAIN CONTROL over the nation's people and to maintain POLITICAL CONTROL for the COMMUNIST PARTY.

OK Gang, does this definition ring any bells???? Let me iterate: 1) ESTABLISHMENT OF OPPRESSIVE SYSTEM OF EXTENSIVE GOVERNMENT = BO and his administration's expeditious endeavor. 2) ELIMINATION OF POLITICAL OPPONENTS = BO's tactic in Chicago when he eventually ran unopposed. 3) MAKING EXTENSIVE USE OF PROPAGANDA = BO and the new grade-school song.. "Barack Hussein Obama, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm", ah, is this replacing the "Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag?" 4) ESTABLISH A PERSONALITY CULT = BO's overt endeavor to indoctrinate our youth. 5) ABSOLUTE DICTATOR to maintain CONTROL o/our people and political control = bailing-out and purchasing a large portion of our businesses. 6) for the COMMUNIST PARTY = BO, his Czars and WH minions.

Answer, Mr Rich.....taadaa (drum roll please) = your Messiah, BO!!!!!!! So, again, before you write another asinine editorial, please bone-up.

Actually, try looking in the mirror when you state the term "Stalinist". Sounds like something you endorse everytime you genuflect at the altar of BO.

..................................................................................................
FRANK RICH has what he wants. The radical-left take-over of America has become a reality. RICH, SOROS, OBAMA and PELOSI have what they want.

Nice group. All in the Democratic Party, too. A party run by radical leftists and overrun with radical leftists.

For every fifty thousand conservatives in the Republican Party there's one moderate. THERE'S NO RADICAL LEFTISTS.

Which party do we want to defeat?

rushshambula writes: Tuesday, November, 03, 2009 8:01 AM
Oh Really!!!
I think Mr Rich ought to google the name Donald Young. He was the openly gay choir master of Jeremiah Wright's Trinity United Church. I say was because shortly before the primaries began for the Democrat Party he was executed and so were two other gay men in similar fashion.
So while Obama's election team was busy with it's Stalin like tactics in Florida and Michigan punishing it's voters for daring to hold early primaries; as if that has anything to do with actual votes counted. Three gay men from Obama's church were systematically executed and no one has a clue as to why.

Did our current president have these men killed to hide a bisexual lifestyle from the public???
No one really knows; but it's very easy to conclude that if there were a threat of exposure of some sort then there is definetly a motive.

I think this is just another case of projection by Mr Rich and it is very telling.

"For every fifty thousand conservatives in the Republican Party there's one moderate. THERE'S NO RADICAL LEFTISTS."

With Scossafasa? they tried to get a radical leftist in. With people like Colin Powell who endorsed and voted for Barack Obama and still calls himself a Republican, they try to get one in. With Lindsey Graham working with the radical leftists on climate change, they try to get one in. With Olympia Snowe voting for Obamacare, they try to get one in.

One by one they try to turn our mushy Republican moderates into radical leftists. They could never do that to a true conservative. That's why the Republican party needs more true conservatives now. We need to CHANGE AMERICA BACK and live up to the Constitution.

Stalinism....
Well, i spose from the wikipedia definition (may wanna try an actual dictionary when looking things up though!) i've read here that the US has been a stalinist nation for at least as long as i've been alive! that's since 66'.... both parties have engaged in most of these behaviors as a regular course of operation. funny part is govt. is only a larger representation of what happens just about everyday in our ordinary lives... at your work place, local govt., & rel. institutions politics happens everyday... one person climbing the ladder of success over the bodies of those that did not make it. Lies, deception, conspiracies, personal attacks, and political assassinations all happen at all levels of organization right into your very own towns! So, is it Stalinism, or the American way to climb that ladder at all costs? Ultimately it's about power and greed.

Question....
What concrete evidence is there to demonstrate that the nation is moving toward a right-center mind-set other than FOX telling you that? when less than 20% of US population ID themselves as republican and less as conservative?? These are lower numbers than before Obama was elected! As long as reps./conservatives keep living in their own delusions/illusions, Dems. and progressives will be VERY happy, although still quite puzzled at the logic and reasoning, or lack of...

_________________________________________________

What concrete evidence do you have to demonstrate your claim that less than 20% identify as conservative?

How many people identify themselves as democrats? How many who do identify as Democrats, identify themselves with the corruption and shenanigans going on in the Obama White House & Pelosi Congress?

What you have stated here is meaningless. Face it, Democrats have a super-majority...a SUPER-MAJORITY...and can't pass their Healthcare Bill.

If Democrat is so popular...why are the people against what they're trying to offer them?

Why are the people- and not just 20% or less- so up-in-arms about the new "progressive" direction the Democrats are pushing.

ANSWER: Because the Marxists/Maoists have hijacked the Democrat Party...and even most Democrats don't support THAT.

Voters Trust Republicans More On 10 Top Issues

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/moo d_of_america/trust_on_issues

For the first time in recent years, voters trust Republicans more than Democrats on all 10 key electoral issues regularly tracked by Rasmussen Reports. The GOP holds double-digit advantages on five of them.

Republicans have nearly doubled their lead over Democrats on economic issues to 49% to 35%, after leading by eight points in September.

The GOP also holds a 54% to 31% advantage on national security issues and a 50% to 31% lead on the handling of the war in Iraq.

But voters are less sure which party they trust more to handle government ethics and corruption, an issue that passed the economy in voter importance last month. Thirty-three percent (33%) trust Republicans more while 29% have more confidence in Democrats.

I accept Wiki's definition of Stalinism. The Left, regardless of party, more fits the description than the Right ever will. Ever.

I joined the Tea Party protests to demand that I be left alone. The sign I carried at the last protest read, "Keep your laws off my body, and out of my wallet".

I'd have been among the first people killed by Stalin.

Yep! We've got some problems.

The folks you mentioned don't help our cause. We're better off without them.

But are they worth our time?

Did you see the White House Guest List that was made public? What do you think George Soros and Obama talked about? Think they talked about the weather?

Or do you think they might have said something like this:

SOROS: "Great job transforming America, Barack. In another year we'll own this country."

OBAMA: "Thanks, George. I could not have done without you".

Get the deal?

Do you think we should be talking about Colin Powell or Olympia Snowe?

There's a fight to save the nation underway.

A powerful, leftist cabal is working 24-7 to destory our country. Do you think Scossafasa and Graham have the slightest thing to do with it?

ARE THEY WORTH A NANO-SECOND OF OUR TIME?

Yes, I do think people like Scossafasa? and Graham have everything to do with it. If the Republican party continues to have fools like these giving in to Obama's radical change of America, all will be lost. By working with Democrats (which usually means doing things the Democrat way) and voting with the Democrats on spending, health care, cap and trade, card check etc. Republicans are just as responsible for the destructions of this country as Democrats are.
