Oh. My. Lord. Senate Dems Issue Broadcast License Threats to Hold Up 'Path to 9/11'
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:50 PM

This is not to be believed. From a letter from Senate Dems to ABC (emphasis is Spruiell's):

Presenting such deeply flawed and factually inaccurate misinformation to the American public and to children would be a gross miscarriage of your corporate and civic responsibility to the law, to your shareholders, and to the nation.

The Communications Act of 1934 provides your network with a free broadcast license predicated on the fundamental understanding of your principle obligation to act as a trustee of the public airwaves in serving the public interest...

Should Disney allow this programming to proceed as planned, the factual record, millions of viewers, countless schoolchildren, and the reputation of Disney as a corporation worthy of the trust of the American people and the United States Congress will be deeply damaged. We urge you, after full consideration of the facts, to uphold your responsibilities as a respected member of American society and as a beneficiary of the free use of the public airwaves to cancel this factually inaccurate and deeply misguided program.

A Capt. Ed flashback to the DNC's response to the pulling of CBS's "The Reagans" program three years ago. This was their reaction to conservative activists getting the program pulled. That particular pulling came without any Congressional threats on CBS.

"No, there are no First Amendment violations here. The RNC protested the content of a program, which is its right, and CBS voluntarily pulled that program off the air, which is its right.

"But the decision makes it very easy to imagine a future where representatives for the Bush administration have the power to disapprove of any content that touches politics, policy, or history — including news programs."

Here's a big slice o' ironic from a dKos writer, circa 2003 (emphasis mine):

I know that Ronald Reagan is God in the right-wing pantheon, but he was really just a man, and a flawed one at that. I know the crybabies on the right can't take any kind of criticism of those they hold near and dear, but the fact that CBS is thinking of cancelling the miniseries is a little bit too much pandering to their poor, easily offended sensitivities for my taste...

If you are interested in seeing this miniseries despite (or because of) the way it will cause all those whining and sobbing wingers to fall apart and reveal their fascistic tendencies to eliminate freedom of speech, please write and let your opinion be heard, too.

Because of the HYPOCRISY, right?

As Allah notes, many on the right have conceded that the Berger scene's dramatization was a step too far, and that more myths shouldn't be added to the already-charged 9/11 narrative.

You can’t play nice with them. I conceded they had a point about the scene with Sandy Berger. Ace conceded it. Dean conceded it. Geraghty conceded it. Others have conceded it. Facts is facts, and “composite” scenes play a little too loose for a film about 9/11. But the fightin’ nutroots wanted to see some fight...

Strange, I don't remember the Left conceding similar points on "The Reagans."

Allah says this sets a precedent for the next time Republicans get ticked off about something on TV. I really believe (hope, hope, hope?) that Republicans aren't dumb enough to pull something like this. I know they do a lot of dumb stuff, and some social conservative parts of the coalition can go a little heavy on the government intrusion, but wow, I just don't think Republicans are quite this good at shooting themselves in the foot.

Must be the NRA influence-- we're very good with firearms.

This is just colossally unprincipled, no matter which Party you belong to, and I think everyone but the Kos Kidz will see that. Friggin' thugs.

This is the kind of stuff that will keep conservatives from staying home this fall. Republicans don't even have to do anything. Unbelievable.

Update: What the threat really means, from the free speech champions at AmericaBlog.

The Senate Democratic leadership just threatened Disney's broadcast license. Not the use of the word "trustee" at the beginning of the letter and "trust" at the end. This is nothing less than an implicit threat that if Disney tries to meddle in the US elections on behalf of the Republicans, they will pay a very serious price when the Democrats get back in power, or even before.

I was kind of expecting him to condemn the action after that first sentence, because it seems so obvious that a condemnation should come after, "The Senate Democratic leadership just threatened Disney's broadcast license."

But no, this is just hardball, nutroots style. It's to be applauded. Take note-- this is the new Democratic Party. They pick Senate candidates and they tell the Majority Leader what to say.

Update: Townhall blogger WhereAreMyKeys has ABC contact info, if you're interested in giving them a piece of your ming.

Lefties don't love Castro for no reason
Fidel Castro would never stand for this kind of insult. For example: a film that portrays Cuba as politically repressive and Castro as unpopular. "Outrageous lies! Burn every copy!! Viva la Revolution..."

Did you expect any different?
I would have expected nothing different from this group of liberals, Democrats and fellow travelers

License threat
Amazing - the Dems threating Free speech? I thought they were the party of ideas and acceptance. This is outrageous. I wish the Dems would be this passionate about fighting real terrorism as they are about this docudrama. It show where their priorities are - all about them, to heck with our National Security. I hope ABC doesn't cave!!

I thought...
...I had seen it all, but this takes the cake! This is no different from a Cosa Nostra shakedown...the old protection racket in essence. And these are the self appointed guardians of our rights? They're like the praetorian guard in Rome: The praetorians watch over the emperor, but who watches over the praetorians?

Path To 911
I hope you will not knuckle under to Democrat pressure to edit or cut the film. We had to sit through Moore's movie all this year! I would like to see this one in its interity.

Thank you,
Tom Hunt

Hypocrisy is in the eyes of the beholder
Seems like everytime a Dem talks about the Right there's some reference to our hypocrisy. Thanks for pointing out the truth!

Lefty free speech = You are free to say anything that doesn't contradict what I decide to believe in today.

Totalitarian
Welcome to the Totalitarian PCascist States of America, where liberal democrats control what you see, hear, and eventually think.

Dissent is not tolerated!

And shoot the messenger (ABC) for frenching.

At least I know now I don't have to waste 6 hours of my life watching network procrapping.

Oh - and you can let ABC know exactly what you think about their caving at this link:

Wait a minute
I thought the media was a bunch of drive-by, Clinton loving, liberals. How could they possibly do anything against the champion of liberalism? Just imagine those hypocrites saying it was RNC’s right to protest ‘The Regan’s’ and take steps to have it cancelled and then doing something similar. Don’t they know that Democrats are bad and everything they do is wrong while Republicans are good? Liberals are hypocrites and conservatives aren’t. Yes, all liberals want is to control what people see, hear and read. No conservative has ever moved to stop a show from being broadcast or a picture from being published or information from being released. So typical of those dirty dogs. That’s why I visit townhall. It’s the most atypical place in the world, filled with balanced fair-minded people.

Why do Dems fear Path to 9/11
You mean to say there might have been a threat to the American people which preceded the Bush Presidency. This is the information the Democrats and the Media have been trying to squash and replace with their attacks on President Bush. The Democrats have tried to make the claim the reasons President Bush invaded Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. This bogus claim was supported when Richard Clarke testified he knew President Bush was going to invade Iraq by his body language. To even put this type of testimony into account as fact showed the Democrats were willing to draw the American people away from the fact there was a threat to this country prior to President Bush taking office. Americans were made to believe all of the terrorist threats, the International Community hating us, and the distress in the world began the moment President Bush took office. Before President Bush took office there wasn't any terrorist threats, terrorists attacks and every one in the International Community loved us so much because of Bill Clinton. No information of any sort which may point the finger to Bill Clinton and not directly to President Bush ticks the Democrats off because so far they've pushed the claim Bush lied to them about why we went to war into Iraq. Any information which shows they had the same intelligence President Bush had, proves they not only dropped the ball, didn't connect the dots, didn't pursue the threats, and how Bill Clinton let his personal life distract him from protecting this country, isn't the type of knowledge the Democrats wants to gets out. The truth concering the Democrats always comes out. It might not be at that very moment because of the Media covering up for the Democrats, but it always comes out. Even it it took five years for the truth to even be discussed or brought to the American people on the Path to 9/11

Censorship
It's amazing to me the lengths in which the left is willing to go to prevent this movie from airing. Their insistence on having certain scenes cut and edited is mind boggling. How is it that the media is not outraged or on the attack by this? Are we to accept certain truths, but not the whole truth, in order to benefit a particular group? Why can't the left accept responsibility for the in-actions which obviously occurred during the 8 years they were in office? Where is the objectivity within the media. Could it be that they are not really interested in the truth and have their own agenda? Could it be that the edited scenes have the potential to damage Hillary's run for the presidency? Is it possible that the edited scenes could put the political furtur of the Clinton's in peril?

Let's ask another question. If the republicans had asked Michael Moore to edit his "so called" docudrama, would the media be so blasé or would they add more fuel to the fire, as we've seen in the past years. Yet here we are bowing down to the liberal left revisionist views of 9/11. Will the truth ever be really known? Will the American public continue to allow the left to ultimately re-write history? Let's face it people, Clinton was more interested in having his own horn tooted, rather than taking care of events leading up to the 9/11 horror. Clinton used the White House as his play boy mansion. It would be a dis-service to this country if indeed the Clinton's get elected. I suppose that while Hillary is busy dismantling our military and convincing the public that Marxism is a good thing while censoring the few remaining conservative news media outlets, Bill can use the "Oral" office to do as he pleases, because he's not really hurting anyone :( . It'll be party time in the White house again.....All of hollywood can come on over and hang out....

So, the American public will just have to wait until some network has the backbone to release the truth concerning pre and post 9/11. My suggestion is don't wait, there are plenty of books out there outlining the tragedy that could have been prevented. At least for today, we continue to enjoy the freedoms our fore fathers intended for us, viva Townhall and all the conservative columnists.......

It's a real shame that ABC will cave
It amazing that a former President is still worried about re-writing his legacy.

We know that there was information withheld from the 9-11 commission report thanks to Sandy Berger stealing documents from the National Archive.

I assume the scene in question the Democrats are screaming about has something to do with what was in those documents.

5 years after Clinton is out of office, he is still controlling the media, and ABC will cave into the pressure.

The family members of 9-11 victims deserve to know the real truth about not taking out Osama Bin Laden.

ABC owes it to the 9-11 victims to keep this film in tact, not to Bill Clinton.

Put it on the web sites then
I say they should put fuller, unedited versions on the Web sites AND allow for up to 3-minute long clips to be net-cast on Youtube.com.
