Another Conservative Who Wasn't Always Pro-Life?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:52 PM

Today’s National Journal’s Hotline reports that CBN’s Brody recently interviewed Kansas Senator Sam Brownback. Brownback had this to say about Governor Mitt Romney’s stance on abortion:

"I think you'll have to look at where he stood, and at times, he's said different things on these issues. I think that's all going to come out during a long campaign.”

Fair enough.

Just about every conservative outlet – including Townhall – has wondered whether or not Mitt Romney’s conversion to the Pro-Life movement was genuine or merely political opportunism. Most conservatives (perhaps weighing their options) seem to have come to the conclusion that we should celebrate conversions, so long as they are sincere.

Clearly, Kansas Senator Sam Brownback (who recently spoke at the March for Life) is seeking to position himself as the only true social conservative in the presidential race. As such, he stands to gain if voters conclude that Romney’s past pro-Choice stance disqualifies him from their support.

But, it seems to me that voters are willing to forgive past mistakes. In fact, I would argue there is really only one unforgivable sin in politics – and that sin is the sin of hypocrisy …

Now, based on Brownback’s comments about Romney, you would assume that he has always been 100 percent solid on the Life issue, right? Well, it depends on whom you ask.

According to the Lawrence Journal World:

“Kansas Republican Party Chairman Tim Shallenburger said he remembered having a conversation with Brownback in 1994 when Brownback was running in the GOP primary for the U.S. House. After the conversation, Shallenburger said he left with the impression that Brownback “was not pro-life.”

And Shallengburger wasn’t the only Kansas leader who had the same recollection:

“David Gittrich, development director for the state’s largest anti-abortion organization, Kansans for Life, said when Brownback first ran for Congress in 1994 'he was ill-informed.' Gittrich added, 'He didn’t know whether he was pro-life or pro-choice.' … Gittrich said he had heard from others that Brownback simply didn’t understand the issues at the time."

A recent article in The New Republic (granted, this isn't exactly a conservative publication) notes that:

“As recently as 1994, the year of his first campaign for Congress, Brownback was a member in good standing of the moderate Republican establishment.”

The article also implies that Brownback co-opted his conservative opponents’ pro-Life stance, in order to win his the Congressional primary in ’94:

“… as primary day approached, (Brownback’s opponent) noticed a change in his opponent's language. Brownback never used to mention abortion on the campaign trail. Now he was publicly pronouncing himself an abortion opponent.”

Now, if Brownback did convert to the Pro-Life cause in 1994, I think we should celebrate it. Clearly, he has served in Congress as a champion for the Pro-Life cause. And whether his conversion came on the road to Damascus – or the “yellow brick road” to the White House -- is of little matter, so long as his conversion was sincere. But if Brownback is, in fact, a convert to the cause, it is concerning that he would question the sincerity of Romney’s conversion.

In fairness, Brownback disputes all of this. And maybe he’s right.

So I’ll end this simply by quoting Sen. Brownback's own words (this also comes from the CBN piece):

"I do think that when you get out on the campaign trail and the campaign really gets fully engaged, there's going to be a lot of discussion about where people actually stand on the issues.”

Indeed.

Big Difference
Sen. Brownback has the battle scars to prove his conversion. He has fought, sweatted, and bled along with pro-life activists for over a decade. Romney has no battle scars. After he gets some, he can come back to us and seek our support.

To Brownback's Credit
On behalf of the good Senator from Kansas, I have to give him credit. Last February, we invited him to Arizona to speak at our annual gala as our keynote speaker. He gave a fantastic speech not only endorsing a pro-life agenda domestically but asserting America should assert a culture of life doctrine, internationally.

While there may be some concerns about the Senator's past position on the sanctity of life, he has certainly come a long way learning the intricacies of the issue as well as articulating what it means to be pro-life. We should be the first to welcome converts to this noble cause.

Mitt Romney: Conservative of Not?
That's the subject our podcast today.

The video from the CBN site doesn't seem to be working that well. We extracted out the audio.

Let's look presidential
I am a Romney supporter. I don't know Brownback much, but am positive that he doesn't have the horspower to win the election, either primary or general. That being said, it doesn't make Brownback look good when he has to resort to belittling an opponent about his pro-life credentials. He would be better served by simply stating his own record and letting the media compare the two. Gov. Romney has stood up for conservative principals to the point of causing his own political harm in a liberal state. That is the kind of action that we are all wishing we saw in Pres Bush, and we did see in Reagan. Which brings me to my point, Romney is very much like Regan:
He can effectively communicate conservative principles.
He can connect with independant voters and conservative democrats, and we need them if we are to win.
He is a man of his word, and will do as president what he promises to do.
He is the only candidate that can reduce the scope of the federal gov if elected.

To years from now we will be talking about the Regan revolution being reignited by Mitt Romney.

It is killing the conservative movement
The pro-life issue is killing the conservative movement. Those on the religious right will vote for and support any trash that promises to support the pro-life concept regardless of what other views they hold and their ability to get elected.

Pro-life is an issue for the pulpit, not the ballot box. The conservative movement needs to go back to a concern for small government and government that leaves people alone. Forget the moral aspect of laws and regulations and let us have fewer of them.

If we don't then I predict the dissolution of the US.
Virginia Patriot writes: Thursday, January, 25, 2007 1:39 PM
David
The dissolution of the U.S. has already begun. Erasing our borders is one of the final steps.
The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.
George W Bush writes: Thursday, January, 25, 2007 2:59 PM
Heard it all before
"To years from now we will be talking about the Regan revolution being reignited by Mitt Romney."

This is the same thing they said about Bush. I am sorry to burst anyone's bubble but if you pick a party insider you will get out of control spending, amnesty, and horrible corruption. These guys have to pay back their benefactors that got them in, speech equals dollars remember, so your miniscule support means nothing to them, they have to give corporations illegals for what they cannot outsource and provide corporate welfare to panhandling multinationals. If all you pro-Lifers want someone to look to...look at Ron Paul. Here is a guy who is an OBGYN and pro life. He is part of the medical community but he doesn't do operations that compromise his morals. How's that for a track record? You won't find a stronger fiscal conservative either. So if you are a real conservative, put up or shut up.

Ron Paul '08
Bobinator writes: Thursday, January, 25, 2007 5:45 PM
Conservatism and electability
A conservative is:
1. Pro life
2. fiscally responsible
3. Wants smaller federal (and state) government
4. Supports second ammendment
5. Supports traditional marrage
6. Supports strong military and uses it for american interests
7. Supports secure borders
8. Supports tax reform
9. Supports SS reform
10.Opposes single payer medical plan

Is there a perfect "conservative" running? NO.

So what do we do? We can bash those we mostly agree with while we hold out dilusional hopes for unelectable people like Ron Paul.

I love Gingrich, but he has too many negatives to win the general election.

McCain is not stable. I'm sorry but it is the truth.

Guliani doesn't even hit half of the above points.

Brownback, Hunter, Tancredo will all fall away.

Why not get behind a candidate that is with you on most issues, can raise the money necessary to WIN, can communicate, and has a great organization, which shows that he is up to the job. Romney is this candidate.

Support who you will, but lets save the bashing for the Democrats.

Ps. yes, I know there are more than 10 points to list. I hit the highlights.

Give it Up Brownback
Indeed, all of the Republican candidates are flawed in one way or another. But there is absolutely no way that an amnesty supporter such as Brownback has a chance in he11 of trying to capture the conservative base of this party. So go ahead Mr. Brownback and tout your pro-life record; because it's totally cancelled out and then some by your total disregard for the rule of law and failure to protect this nation from the invasion of illegals.
Virginia Patriot writes: Thursday, January, 25, 2007 10:04 PM
Amen Sammy
Pro-illegal candidates will have lots of money from corporations, but they won't have voters. The Republican Party will implode if an amnesty passes.
bobinator: your top 10 covers it pretty well. I agree with your assessment of the players also.

Listen
The multinationals and elites of the country want a North American Union by 2010, if you pick a Romney, or a Guiliani, or a McCain or anyone that has establishment dirt on them you are getting the American Union. You can rationalize however you want, look at Bush, what has he done that is any better than Clinton, hell he is even worse that Clinton at illegals. Democrat/Republican no difference, you keep electing establishment candidates because they are electable and what do you get? Fourteen years after the Republican Revolution, 6 years of having Republicans controlling the Executive and the Congress and you are still asking for the same stuff.

Pro-Life IS the Issue
can As long as seven men dictate from the bench that it is legal to kill the most defenseless and vulnerable human beings, it will be an issue.

The abolitionists did not give up and either will the pro-lifers. As long as we get the right President who will nominate pro-life justices, we are moving in the right direction, legally. But it's up to us to get the right Senators elected to get the right justices appointed.

Its time for the law to catch up with the science.
