Tom Daschle, Your New Universal Health Care Czar
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 12:19 PM

Tom Daschle will be the next Secretary of Health and Human Services, a government agency that consumes nearly 25% of all federal expenditures

Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle has been tapped by President-elect Barack Obama to become the next Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The agency oversees hundreds of government programs, including Medicare and Medicaid, and administers more taxpayer-funded grants than all federal agencies combined.

The HHS budget for fiscal year 2008 was $707.7 billion.

Daschle is not widely recognized as a health care wonk, but recently authored a book last titled "Critical: What We Can Do About the Health Care Crisis" that argues for the creation of a universal health care system and a Federal Health Board, much like the Federal Reserve.

The purpose of the board, Daschle has said in other interviews, would be to "preclude" Congress of the responsibility of becoming "mired in the minutia of details" of universal health care. Congress would simply delegate those duties to the board. This would increase the chances of a complex piece of legislation, like universal health care, getting passed by Congress.

Promotional copy for the book says:

" The U.S. is the only industrialized nation that does not guarantee necessary health care to all of its citizens, and as former senator Daschle observes, Skeptics say we can't afford to cover everyone; the truth is that we can't afford not to because U.S. economic competitiveness is being impeded by the large uninsured population and fast-rising health costs. Daschle's book delineates the weaknesses of previous attempts at national health coverage, outlines the complex economic factors and medical issues affecting coverage and sets forth plans for change. Daschle proposes creating a Federal Health Board, similar to the Federal Reserve System, whose structure, functions and enforcement capability would be largely insulated from the politics and passion of the moment, in addition to a merging of employers' plans, Medicaid and Medicare with an expanded FEHBP (Federal Employee Health Benefits Program) that would cover everyone. There is no more important issue facing our country, Daschle asserts, than reform of our health-care system, and the book's health-care horror stories bring this immediacy home."

During his time in the Senate, Daschle advocated providing prescription drugs for seniors and increased HMO regulation. He is considered to be an expert parlimentarian despite unsuccessfully leading the Democrats in demanding that legislation to create the Department of Homeland Security include liberal, labor hiring provisions in 2001. He also voted in favor or providing federal money to provide abortions for women in the military stationed overseas.

Daschle was unseated by Republican John Thune in 2004.

Obama continues to break
his campaign promises at every turn. His example of bipartisan politics becomes a bigger joke with each selection to his leftist illuminati cabinet. Should we be surprised at this? (rhetorical question...no need to answer).

Tom Dashle responsible for national debt

Tom Dashle is single handedly is responsible for most of the current national debt.

He was the guy who held up homeland security bill until bloated Transportation and Farm spending bills were passed.

85% of the Farm Bill goes to hugh Corporate Farming like Archer Daniel Midland.

Only 15% actually goes to help the family farmer in need.

Change we can believe in?

Royinoslo- your life still 'sucks'
You and Obama can blame Bush and Cheney all you want for your sucky lives - but long after Bush retires and his life continues, yours will still suck without any hope in the new Obama administration that looks a lot like Hillary Clinton's would have. Before you try and jail Bush and Cheney, shouldn't you first get the President-Select's original birth certificate and list of donors from foreign nations or is that too much to ask of the messiah? Never mind, because no matter where BHO was born, his life's legacy will be the president who led us into the greatest depression ever after he bankrupts the nation with his notion of 'healthcare for everyone' when the economy is crashing. After 8 years of failure, he will still blame Bush/Cheney and you along with his worshippers will still have sucky lives ooh la la!!!!!

Tommy Daschle...lol

So far, President-elect Obama's demonstration of "change" is getting more amusing by the day.. Looks like the old Clintonista Gang will be running the country again, but without the former rational Republican restraints (at least until 2010).

Some believe that Obama may try to govern more Centrist at least in the beginning.. but knowing those Leftist Dems he is selecting, I wonder if an inexperienced President Obama will be able to control his people, or will they control him?

You mean like Harry Land deal Reid, or Wiliam jefferson? Or Chris Dodd, Emmanuel? How about that accountability for Obaba...where is Obama's birth cert and is his selective service card a forgery?
Where is the change in the new admin? Oops, all Clinton cronies and that's it...old blood and nothing new.

Putting Cheney and Bush in jail IS moving the country forward. Personal accountability, now there is an American value we can agree upon.

And the dems continue the backslide by trying to indict Cheney and then Bush when he leaves office, instead of moving the Country forward with true change...Barf bucket, please.

Agreed! Daschle's one of the originators of hate and disunity. Gephart another wash-up. Wonder what position he's earned in the Obama cabinet. Heck Obama's on such a roll we'll probably see Mondale as assistant VP to Biden.

Again, all this change is a rehash of failed liberal politicians. Can't get elected so they have to be hired. As far as I'm concerned they can keep their 'change'.

Rashum - re: Dean
Don't type it! You've just jinxed it! Obama's obviously bottom feeding. He's not done yet. He might go deep and put Dean in the cabinet.
I mean Daschle... a zero... amazing!

Geez
His cabinet picks just keep getting loonier and far more leftist than even I would have believed. Why did Obambi even bother attempting to campaign from the center?

The only one that is missing is Jimmy Carter, but then again, he may just be desgnated as the new Ambassaor to the UN.

GOD, forgive the left for they know not what they do. Amen
RASHUM writes: Wednesday, November, 19, 2008 1:07 PM
joke
Daschle is your typical liberal Washington insider hack who happens to be married to a lobbyist. I am not surprised by the choice. Obama owes him a favor for supporting him even before he became the false messiah. I am not a fan of Daschle, but could be worse. He could have chosen Howard Dean.

But face it, Obama HAS to have these old hacks around him because he is clueless as to what to do.

Rewards for a lesser man
Tom Daschle did all in his power to derail the President Bush, beginning with that insane battle over the new Homeland Security consolidation and the hiring of the TSA employees.

We lurch from one hot topic to the next in this twenty four hr. news cycle but that story should remain front and center in the consciousness of all citizens.

Daschle, then Senate majority leader tried to force the expected new hires of the TSA into the ranks of Federal employees in contravention of the Administrations desire to hire independent outside security. Daschle railed at the administration, alluding to Bush as a divider while actually holding up the stitching of the new Department of Homeland Security.

It was a shameful effort by the elfish Daschle to pad the rolls of the Federal cadres with new blood for the Democrats while attacking Bush who was at that very time holding weekly breakfasts with Daschle, Gephardt and their Republican counterparts as the country began to structure itself to fight the terror war.

Former Sen. Daschle has been hanging around D.C. waiting for a plum position since his rejection by South Dakota voters and the election of Mr. Thune. Typical little mister behavior of one we've come to expect little from.
luckymick writes: Wednesday, November, 19, 2008 12:29 PM
So, Change is...
... rehashing failed liberal democrats from the 1990's?

In the 90's Daschle had a 0% approval rating. The voter voted him out at the peak of his career.

Now Obama's putting him in the cabinet? So "O" hires a "0" (zero).

Wonder how Obama's going to get away from the lobbyists when Daschle's married to one?
