It's The War, Stupid

Even as usually level-headed pundits like RealClearPolitics John McIntyre join with fever swamp vapors-inhaling agenda journalists and pundits in pushing the "Senate-in-play" meme, it is time for the clear-eyed to state the obvious: Voters are smart, and they are concerned that the nation be defended.
Which means that they will not be voting Democrat.
Lieberman is crushing Lamont because Connecticut voters want a serious senator on issues of national security. The same dynamic will help George Allen, Conrad Burns, Mike DeWine and Jim Talent. Rick Santorum is the only GOP incumbent facing off against a Democratic nominee pretending not to be in favor of retreat in the face of the enemy, and thus his race is the toughest. (And he deserves your first contribution as a result.)
The Republican who will lose --please, God-- is Lincoln Chafee who is fecklessness defined when it comes to national security.
Anyone remotely aware of the rhetoric of the Democrats and of the positions of their supporters will shudder at the prospect of their ascending to the majority. That'sthe story of 2006.
It's the war, stupid.

Although your argument has visceral credibility, the fear is that mainstream Democrats may be seduced by the siren song of the left which is that the deaths suffered in Iraq don't justify the goal of liberating a nation that is at fundamental odds with our democratic principles.
Therefore, there is more than one war in this debate, because in the view of many Democrats the war in Iraq is distinct from war against the Islamic terrorists. Most profoundly, is our divisive war at home.
The national elections since 9/11 have demonstrated that national security does indeed trump traditional concerns, from economic security to social issues. However, it's also evident that with every passing election our collective sense of the threat of the Islamofascists has become ever more remote, like a receding horizon.
As such, it's the war at home that will ultimately determine the outcome of the election and it's by no means a fait accompli because the left has a deep, if craven political bench in the MSM.
This is no time to sacrifice security for the sake of political advantage, but that is precisely the left's gambit. History is being made and we must pray that it's every American's hope that we can unite against this baleful threat because our very future is at stake.
As Mr. Hewitt has said on many occasions, a vote for Democrats is a vote for a weaker and more vulnerable America.

I have my chips in the game, and they are all on Hugh's assement being correct.
Now we all have to WORK, to make this happen!

The Republicans are up to their usual biennial fearmongering tactic that has won them the last two elections just barely in nailbiting squeakers. It is tragic that this is the only bone they can throw to try to galvanize the Conservative base they have completely alienated with their unconscionably ridiculous and absolutely inexcuseable spending habits. It is patently obvious that not much galvanization is taking place. When Conservatives are truly galvanized, the Republican Party wins elections in landslides like Reagan's famous landslide victory in 1984.
As a true Conservative now apparently without a party, I'll be sitting this one out just as Richard Viguerie, a former Reagan campaign operative, recommends in his recent book, "Conservatives Betrayed". By sitting this election out, I am doing my part to guarantee the current Liberal Lite Republican Party of John McCain comes back to its senses and actually becomes once again the Party of Reagan. They however must be spanked thouroughly in this election to wake them up. Reagan would be absolutely insulted by and ashamed of today's so-called Republican Party.
I recently received yet another solicitation for a GOP contribution to elect Republican Senators. Guess who was the signatory on the add representing the Republican Party: JOHN MCCAIN. I almost had a conniption fit. THAT is proof-positive that today's Republican Party truly is a moderate party - NOT a CONSERVATIVE party whatsoever!
Hopefully, after the Republicans get spanked in this election, they will introduce a TRULY CONSERVATIVE Presidential candidate in 2008 who will bring this nation back to its senses instead of the despicable moderate, John McCain.
I am sick and tired of so many so-called "CONSERVATIVE" pundits and radio talk-show hosts like Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter, Mike Gallagher, Bill Bennett, Michael Medved, and so many others continually apologizing for this reprobate Republican Party that is NO LONGER CONSERVATIVE. The only guys who seem to know what's going on or have the courage to actually tell it like it is are Michael Savage and Richard Viguerie. The Conservative base cannot be maintained forever with fear tactics. Every time the Republicans have tacked to the center, they have lost their hides. It's only a matter of time before the bomb drops on these charlatan Republicans that are running this party straight off a cliff. |

you are an idiot. Please change parties. We don't need your sort of inane babble.
This is the most crucial time in our country's history. The GWOT is the single most important event in the past two centuries. If you don't think Reagan would be fighting it the same way Bush is then you don't know Reagan.
You want to "sit it out" so Dems can gain control? Really? How many lives are you willing to sacrifice because you spending priorities aren't being met.
Yeah, you are a patriot, Carl. The Islamo-fascists will be impressed with your principles while they are slitting your throat.
Idiot. |
|
Michael Savage, Carl? Really? That's your standard? That man is a freakin' moron; but beyond that he is just a rotten human being. All tha man does is hate. He offers the most pedestrian arguments and cannot defend his own positions without screaming and cutting people off. He's petrified of anybody that can speak their mind. So, you go, Carl. But watch out for those Black Helicopters. Cuz you know the government is watching everything you do - because you're so important, Carl.
Idiot. |

The subject title assumes Democrats know it really is a war. A better title might be "It's A War, Stupid". |
|
Carl: Like you I wonder where my party went. Pat Buchanan says it pretty well. Personally I blame the religous nuts who commandeered the Republican party back when. |

Voters are smart and they know that it was this Republican administration that got distracted from the real war on terror to invade Iraq. The terrorists that attacked us five years ago were trained and organized in Afghanistan. Since the Democrats fully supported the war in Afghanistan, to claim they are soft on terror is disingenuous. If we are truly going to win this war, we need to keep our eye on who the enemy really is. |

Hello to Mr. Hewitt, and all,
He is right, of course. This year it is all about the war. We've seen how the Democrats are treating national security, and I can assure everyone of one simple thing:
It isn't a political football. For the Democrats national security and the war have been political points to them from the start; beginning with their disingenuous vote in October 2002 for the vote to go into Iraq.
I did a nice little follow-up post to Hugh's while I was filling in for the kids. I hope they enjoy their honeymoon while I enjoy getting back into the game I left a few short months ago.

If the president's conscience is to be caught, it's true the War's the Thing...
Fortunately "State of Denial" is hitting the stands--voters can now be more educated about Bush's fecklessness and unseriousness in matters of national security. |
|
Whatever the feelings of individual Democratic politicians, it's clear the party as a whole is far more interested in winning the presidential election in '08 than winning the GWOT.
Am I calling them unpatriotic? Yes. |

Blu:
If the Republicans lose say the Senate this go-round or the House or both legislative bodies for that matter, what difference really will it make? They have not led yet! They do not know how to lead. Our country, sad as it may seem, no longer has the political will to fight this GWOT. Besides, Bush really should divide the country into three countries: Kurdistan, Shiitistan, and Sunnistan. The country of Iraq was historically created by the British with these fighting factions fighting amongst themselves to maximize British control.
The country is entirely too Liberal and effeminized for real hardcore non-Politically Correct warfare from years of Political Correctness, the institutionalized Propaganda machine of the Democratic Party that begins in public schools run by the NEA and the AFT unions and culminates in the indoctrination classes in "LIBERAL" arts at our major universities run by whackjob professors. PC is in the MSM and all over DC and it is even in mainstream churches now and certainly everywhere in Corporate America. It is part of the diabolical effeminization and castration of masculinity in America.
The Republicans have caved and cowtowed and given obeisance to this Gospel of Insanity of the Left. In so doing, they no longer can be distinguished entirely from the Left in many ways other than an insistence, rightfully so, on national security. Notice, I said an "INSISTENCE". The truth is that most of the Republican Senators along with the Democratic idiot Senators were offering their own version of AMNESTY proposals completely unlike the House Republicans who stood with the American People by not proposing AMNESTY whatsoever. Thefact of the matter isthat we were only a handful of votes away in the House from "legalized" ILLEGAL Immigration in our country. THAT IS CHILLING!!! Our legislators, Republican and Democrat alike almost committed the murder of American Sovereignty - NATIONAL SUICIDE.
Amnesty is economic suicide for this country, but most importantly supporting it is a blatantly arrogant dereliction of their Constitutional duty to uphold the Constitution and laws of the USA. For this, they deserve to be impeached - every one of them, Democrat and Republican alike, who voted or proposed Amnesty. They also deserve to be thrown out of office. Supporting Amnesty without stopping the never-ending flow of would-be terrorists across our border is unconscionable insanity. It is completely irresponsible, inexcuseable government.
Blu, now do you think "CONSERVATIVE" Republicans should be rewarded for almost making our country The United States of Mexico??? Wake up, dude, and smell the coffee before Juan Valdez throws it in your face! |
|
will try to pass Amnesty and be thwarted by a filibuster in the Senate by Republicans who have suddenly realized what side their bread is buttered on after the Conservative base deserted their colleagues in the election.
The Democratic Congress will have impeachment hearings for show, but they will never carry it out because the Democratic Party is mortally terrified of the prospect of VP Cheney running the entire show. They will just use it to score political brownie points with the kook partisan Left.
They will try their damndest to end funding for the Iraqi War, but will meet with a filibuster by the Republicans in the Senate who have once again suddenly realized what side their bread is buttered on.
Democrats will propose a repeal of all of the tax cuts and an end to the No Child Left Behind policies of the Republican years, but Bush will wield his veto powers like a Ninja warrior wielding his sword and the ever-present Senate filibuster will be waiting in the wings. It will be good ol' gridlock like it used to be until 2008 when after getting their hides skinned, the Republicans will return to their party principles and the party base and nominate a REAL Conservative for President and REAL Conservatives in the hinterlands of America.
What will this produce? SEA CHANGE in American politics. After just two years of the insanity of Pelosi, Hillary, Schumer, Leahy, Kennedy, Waxman, Biden, Boxer, Durbin, Feingold, Rangel, and Reid and all of the other idiotic Democrats all giddy and reckless with power, revenge, and chairmanships galore, the American People will be ready to pull the plug on this operation. It will be "Morning in America" after the "Nightmare of Elm Street!"
However, to get there, the mild-mannered, wussy,limp-wristed Politically Correct Liberal Lite Big Government ex-Democrat Republicans of today that are sorry excuses for manhood must be spanked and kicked out on the street for abandoning the base and Conservative principles on which they were elected. It is a small price to pay for the glory of a better tomorrow. |

Iwish you were right about it's the war, stupid. But the The dems are going to win control of both the Senate and the House because of the liberal media which has been bombing Bush and Rumsfeld for six straight years, and their lies about the war will win out. Considering that grinning do-nothing sports jock Rendell will win Pa. in a landslide, and Spitzer and Clinton will win by landslides, this one two punch will knock out knocking out Republican congess people both states. I do like your optimism. But I am geared for dreaded worse from Shumer, Diana durbin from Illinois, and mrs. know it all Hillary and the evil spewing Barbara Boxer. It will take a miracle in October for the Republicans to hang on. And we are out of miracles. But i don;t see it.

We're going to win because America is going to win. You can sit back and play banjo while the killas get to work. Thanks for laying the foundation. |
