Thoughts on Romney and Abortion

... Yesterday's story about Mitt Romney's abortion position was the result of three factors:
1. The local reporter who wrote the story was, no doubt, ignorant of the pro-Life movement's strategy, which is to first overturn Roe vs. Wade and then to fight it out in the states. Additionally, he was probably ecstatic to have seemingly caught Romney in a contradiction ...
2. So why is this dangerous to Romney? The "Romney is a flip-flopper" narrative is out there. Any story that perpetuates the narrative is both newsworthy and potentially dangerous.
3. It's also important to note that Romney could have avoided the entire mess by simply saying: "Ultimately, I support an Amendment which would protect all human life. But I also believe in incremental gain. And overturning Roe (and returning to a time before the Supreme Court imposed its views on the states) would be a big step in the right direction."

I am now in favor of the Left aborting their demon spawn, so there are fewer Losers walking the earth.
And then there is Euthanasia. I am in favor of all Lefties having the right to put themselves out of their own misery.
Am I in favor of it for normal people?
Not so much. |

Where is Hugh Hewitt's post to that effect. He's laggin'. |

Romney is playing the press like a fiddle. He's a "flip-fiddling" with their tiny brains. He uses his "mistakes" at just the right moment to get the press to give him ink, define issues for his base (who pays attention) and increase his acceptance to moderates he's going to need later (who don't pay close attention). Hat tip to the AP guy in Nevada and the Washington Post. |

Naturally, I expect the old mainstream media to confuse the issue, as they're just looking out for their number one---the Democratic Party. And Matt, I realize that you oppose electing "A Mormon to the White House," thus, you bang your pots and pans even though you know that Romney actually governed as a pro-lifer.
In his 1973 dissenting opinion on Roe V. Wade, William Rehnquist wrote; -------------------- "There apparently was no question concerning the validity of this provision or of any of the other state statutes when the Fourteenth Amendment was adopted.....the drafters did not intend to have the Fourteenth Amendment withdraw from the States the power to legislate with respect to this matter." --------------------- And Justice Byron White wrote that he saw --------------------- "...no constitutional warrant for imposing such an order of priorities on the people and legislatures of the States." ---------------------
Romney's statement about returning the responsibility back to the states is neither a flip, nor a flop,---it is merely the argument which opponents of abortion---including Supreme Court dissenters Rehnquist and Byron White---have articulated for 34 years.
As far as George Stephenopolous' question to Romney about the GOP platform goes, most people couldn't tell you what's in their party's platform. Anyhow, the platform is written by partisan activists---not scholars of Constitutional Law. I seem to recall that when Bob Dole ran in '96, he famously laughed about not even having read the GOP platform. I think most people would agree that when Romney was quoted as saying "I'd let states have this choice rather than let the federal government have it" he was probably talking about opposition to the Supreme Court's overreaching decision of Roe V. Wade---not opposition to a future Amendment. After all, a future Amendment would be the ultimate expression of the state legislatures in action. |

Convoluted and far-reaching attempt to label Romney, it smacks of desperation. Whether opposition or reporter, it is over-zealous and it does more to diminish and trivialize attempts to label Romney while giving him free publicity about his stance.
I watched it again. It is the equivalent of calling Republicans like GWBush a flipper. He is pro-life; he appoints Roberts; he supports the party platform of 2004; and he believes that states make laws. /shrug He is a flipper?

Kerry's problem was that seemed to offer contradictory stances on an issue in one sentence.
Mitt's problem is that he splits his one stance on an issue into two sentences so that it seems contradictory.
Kerry is a flip-flopper Romney is consistent |

bloggers have to be 50+ years old to remember an America with States Rights. It was a true Republic at that time. Romney knew what his position needed to be, inorder to become the Governor, and he now recognizes what his position should be, inorder to win the Whitehouse.......That's Politics!.....But I still prefer a conservative candidate with a historical voting record of consistancy. For me, the "Resume" speaks louder than the "Interview". I still have to consider, "What would his position be if he were running for Mayor in San Francisco?"..........Another type of "Road to Damascus" conversion? |
