One or Two People Killed And A Dozen Injured In Florida Shooting

One person has died after a gunman opened fire earlier today in an Orlando office building that housed an engineering company. In addition to the single death, five others were injured. The shooter was laid off from the engineering firm two years ago, though specifics about his motive are still unknown.
This office shooting comes less than 24 hours after the horrific attack on Ft. Hood.
From ABC:
ORLANDO, FL -- Orlando Police say they have arrested the suspect in the downtown Orlando shooting that left one dead and five injured.
Jason Rodriguez was arrested at his mother's residence without incident.
People streamed out of the 16-story Legion Place office building around lunchtime and some told local television stations they had barricaded themselves inside their offices.

Lonny, we were speaking of England finding themselves sans guns in WORLD WAR II, so don't change the subject. Even the Germans thought they would invade England. Operation Sea Lion -- remember?
I believe Vietnam, the Iraq War and the Afghan War proved or are proving that missiles, rockets, bombs and such can destroy one hell of a lot of things, but boots on the ground are still needed. You can have ships, planes and all the missile sorta of ammo you want, but unless you are willing to turn an entire area into a sheet of green glass, then you need the guy with the gun.
Will the US ever be invaded? Probably not in our life time. But, even if a foreign power did take out our major cities, there is one hell of a lot of terrain that could not be much damaged by missiles.
Will other countries be invaded in our life time? Yep, and the citizens of those countries will want and need small arms. Most will find their citizens defenseless.
I believe you might read a little history on other matters too. It is obvious that the founding fathers FEARED the government. Lots of those old boys wrote about that. The person who does not suspect the government of ill conduct can only be classified as a right cretin.

goodness gracious, so handguns would beat the missles? Silly people. UK was NOT invaded in any manner where hand to hand combat (the type that you suggest people need guns to do, because you fear your own government) was involved. These arguments are nonsense.
The only truth is that you fear your own government. Well, guess what, so do the mafia, street gangs, and illegal immigrants. And they fear each other. And so long as people like you justify not only the possession but the use of handguns when you deem it appropriate, you are the ones who are giving criminals and others permission to shoot to kill, whenever they feel 'threatened'. The second amendment was created at a time when the former colonies still felt the need for self-protection against the Brits and other possible invaders, and there were few full time police around. Well, that isn't today, is it? Cops protect us. If that isn't good enough for you, then why don't you pay more money in taxes to hire more cops? Why don't you realize that everytime you try to cut public programs, you send more people into abject poverty and often crime because they have no other means to support their families.
But you have your gun, and no one is going to take it from your cold dead hand, right? Good for you. Hope that 'intruder' turns out to be your kid coming home late from a date, and then you can explain to the cops and your family why junior is dead on your front porch. Gun happy, crazy rightwingers. I don't often feel this way, as our nation is great, but the rightwing is going to be the end of this great nation. |

You might want to read a mite of history, Old Man.
Folks in the United States were rounding up every spare firearm they found find to send to England in the early days of World War II. Why? Well, England feared they'd be invaded and had very few firearms to repel the invaders.
The British learned nothing. They still do not have enough firearms for a civilian force (home guards) to defend against a company of church ladies. And, their crime rate has rocketed. It is not safe to walk down the street in major cities. "A Green and Pleasant Land." Not anymore, Buccaneer! |

No, but India was by the UK. And what better way to control people than to disarm them.
As long as you're comparing crime rates, particularly violent ones, the murder rate per 1000 is about 6 times higher in Democratic Counties than in Republican. Seems like the "entitled" ones have a big issue with controlling themselves.

Ghandi, maybe? Who cares? UK was not invaded, and they have fewer church going folks than we do. Yet they have far less crime of all kinds than we do, on a per capita basis, particularly violent crime.

When I don't want to speak to someone, I pretend I don't speak English either. I'm fluent in Spanish, does that make me an illegal, or merely someone who took about 10 years of Spanish from middle school through college?

The meth lab operators are native-born scum, although most seem to be originally from PA. They seem to think WVA is so rural that they are safe, but they are not. The sheriffs know everybody in their country and if he misses knowing a new one, somebody will tell him.
A sheriff found a meth lab in what is one of the most remote counties in WVA, busted up the lab and hauled them off to jail. My cousin, who lives near where they sheriff found the lab siad; "It was funny. Every building on that old farm burned up that night. Funny how that happened!"

your view of history is rather strange, as is your POV about guns. We have more guns now than we ever have, and lots more shootings. When I was in high school, heck, maybe a knife would be used in a fight. Nowadays, a gun is very easy to get and use.
But let's just arm everyone. And those folks in Europe were invaded, yet they don't have guns like we do. You'd think they had more credibility in terms of what real violence means. |

why in Europe there are so few of these gun events? Very, very rare. (frankly, relatively rare here too, given the number of people we have who are armed, legal or otherwise). But in places like London, people get fired, yet they don't go running back to shoot up their workplace. Why might that be? Wouldn't you rather live someplace where guns are not so commonplace? |

Best friend just bought a S&W .38 special that is the best balanced and the lightest hand gun I've had the pleasure to handle. It is made of titanium.
He now has a concealed carry permit and a hand gun 'cause three illegal aliens acted really froggy toward him when he was trout fishing last year. He said he figured he'd have ended up in the river had not his son-in-law arrived on the scene.
I didn't have time to get one last summer, but going to get one next summer when I go home to West Virginia. I only need to get a permit from either FL or WVa. |
