Rush And The Left's Great Snarl
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 8:57 AM
Byron York has a complete recap of the phoney "phoney soldiers" controversy.  Senate Democrats are clearly clueless about how this appears to the national audience, so we can only hope they continue to push it as a scandal.

I gave a talk last night on the presidential race to an audience of approximately 100 very successful business people and their spouses, and in the Q&A that followed, a soft spoken woman asked a question in very soft and almost grieved tones:  What has happened to the Democrats and the media that they are so filled with hate?  The backdrop was the attack on Rush, particularly Tom Harkin's churlish suggestion that Rush was using drugs.  She explained further that she doesn't understand what could motivate the sort of behavior we are seeing on the left.

Her question --what has happened to the Democrats and the media?--  is not a question about tax policy, or strategy vis-a-vis Iraq or Iran, or health care or global warming, but about collective character, and it is significant.

Everybody with a brain knows that Rush didn't slander anti-war soldiers, and that the whole phoney phoney story was an attempt by the left and especially Senate Democrats to change the subject from the MoveOn.org ad which has branded them as anti-military in a way far more significant than Dick Durbin's memorable comparison of American troops at Gitmo to Nazis, the Soviets or Pol Pot followers or John Kerry's slam on the intelligence or capabilities of the troops that led to the famous photo from Iraq.

Thus everybody knows that Senate Democrats and now such would-be grandees as Wes Clark are pushing a lie as a means of attacking Rush, and doing so in plain view.  New media guarantees that no such story can succeed, and it hasn't for the simple reason that it is not true, and print journalists, bloggers talk radio and some cable outlets have completely undercut the charge.  It is a sort of reverse Rathergate: Rather than watching new media destroy the reputation and credibility of a key media player, we have seen it buttress that reputation and credibility.

In the process though, Americans have again seen a close-up of The Great Snarl that the MoveOn.org Democrats have become.  It is a disturbing thing, this collection of hard-left activists, vulgar and profane bloggers, captive Senators and know-nothing MSMers, and the more it is on display the more it becomes one big blob of seething hate, from the Code Pinkers to Tom Harkin, Media Matters and the HuffPo express.  On to the center-right this blob projects its disfiguring anger, but it doesn't work because most Americans hear and watch for themselves.  They know Rush, Sean, Laura, Bill, Michael, Dennis. Mark, Glenn, Neil and me and all the rest of the talkers.  They read Powerline, Instapundit, Michelle, NRO; watch O'Reilly and Special Report and, crucially, know who supports the troops and the war and who doesn't.  You can't talk over Barnes, Barone, Boot, Kagan, Kristol, and Krauthammer.  The center-right supports the military and the mission.  The left doesn't.

The American people know this.  Ten years ago the MSM might have been able to facilitate such an attack on Rush, but it is simply impossible today.  Pushing a smear in the new media environment is a profoundly self-destructive bit of bad political theater that insults the audience's intelligence while revealing the attackers' character.

Of course that the troops know the real score.  Their families know.  And their friends know.  Watch the Peter Pace farewell remarks below.  He knows too.  It is impossible to be awake in this country and not know.

The MoveOn.org Democrats have completely misread the 2006 elections and the polls.  The map they drew from their flawed analysis of the data has led them far from the mainstream, or at least encourgaed them to embrace their inner radical.  But the Great Snarl on display continues to hammer home that the Democrats are way off from the mainstream of American politics.

Either a Romney or a Giuliani candidacy will be an upbeat, pro-American traditions and values campaign that will be wholly supportive of the troops and victory and of the promise and future of the country.  The nominee will be supported by the legion of new media outlets, led by Rush, that believes as both of them do in the justice of the cause, the evil of our enemies abroad and the greatness of the country and especially of its men and women in uniform.

The Senate Democrats and their core on-line constituency have done more to draw and display this deep contrast than any Republican or conservative could have done.  That they continue to do so in the face of the blowback attests to their collective character which is fueled by an intense and disfiguring anger and in many cases the hate my questioner spoke of last night.

The Great Snarl is not a winning strategy, but the left took the Democrats' eyes off winning a long time ago.

In the final analysis, this Rush thing shows how the Republicans are playing soldiers for fools. Sure they'll bow and scrape, fuss and fawn, over the military, but if the soldiers hold politically incorrect views, they are "phony."

Rush is a rabble-rouser, a common agitator. Guys like him surface in every generation, but they are forgotten in short order. Mankind does not seem to hold their "service" in high regard.

HUNTER FOR AMERICA

Republican voters still get to decide who their nominee will be. Money only buys elections when people act like sheep. If 80% of Republicans are indeed seeking a conservative, we can nominate one. We can nominate Duncan Hunter. The money players won't like it and are trying to convince us only Rudy McRomneyson (h/t portlandmom) can win. Hogwash. They want an open borders candidate. Give Americans a chance to vote for a candidate who WILL secure the border and watch turnout soar. Americans want their government to fulfill it's most basic responsibility.

The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.

"What has happened to the Democrats and the media that they are so filled with hate?"

I have to pause when I hear such things. I really wonder where this woman has been, and if she realizes that the extreme right aka the Christian Coalition of the 90's routinely pulled out plenty of hatred for liberals, democrats and anyone who disagreed with them. Things have been bad for a very long time. Discourse hasn't been civil, and the move-oners (who still like to think of themselves as organic and zen) are in there too.

Sure, she might be just waking up to the Dems vitriol and rabid lemming attacks, but the Repubs have been leaders at mass media, they used it with more sophistication, speed and success than ever imaginable.

And it's true, what you say, Hugh. The Move-oners haven't gauged anything right in awhile. But mostly what they've done is not pay attention to the once rank and file Dems who've left the party in droves. They've also not paid attention to Dems who own small businesses and struggle with any number of new regulations and taxes. So they left, too.

Anyway, about the Petraeus condemenation. They took down a soldier who has devoted his entire life to the service of this country. The Dems blew it the first day. If it offended them they should have said so from the get go --a two week wait seemed insincere. I think out of all of them, Kerry was the biggest failure. As a former officer, he should've come out against it immediately.

The thing about Rush was a real circus. He's a private citizen living in a capitalist society making his wealth and paying his taxes by doing the thing he does best. The founders of Move-on did that too, when they developed flying toaster software for Berkeley Systems and sold it for millions. The only difference is Rush's expertise is picking on them. That's what they can't handle.

Thrown Under the Bus
Here' from Rush's transcipt:
"I didn't talk about this last week, but Mitt Romney issued a statement much like he issued against -- who did he throw under the bus? Oh. Larry Craig. He issued a statement: That's reprehensible what Limbaugh said, horrible, whatever it was he said -- and then later in the day somebody from his office called our office. "We just found out that this is a smear, and Mitt will say this if he's asked about it." He hasn't been asked about it, so his statement still stands. McCain sort of halfway threw me under the bus by saying "if" what Limbaugh said as reported is correct, blah, blah, blah, then it's disgusting and horrible and so forth and so on."

So why is Mitt on Hugh's show this afternoon explaining himself instead of Rush's, several days after the start of the episode. Now Hugh has two bloggers on meekly agreeing Mitt did a good job with his statement and the quick news cycle. LOL

Not only did Rush say it...
he's been saying it for years!
Rush and Hannity and all the rest have constantly hinted, implied, and sometimes outright said that (1)anyone opposed to the war are unpatriotic (2)ALL of our soldiers over there are for the war, no matter what else you hear, and (3)therefore, if you are against the war, you do not support the troops. This latest gaffe by Rush fits right into the central theme. Hugh is a classier man than Rush by far: in my opinion, Hewitt, Medved, and Prager tend to be much more measured and thoughtful than Rush and Hannity. Yet even Hugh sometimes succumbs to this "anyone who disagrees must hate America" nonsense. Listen, all you are doing is making independent minded Americans like myself resent the Republican party even more when you constantly imply that anyone who disagrees with you is unpatriotic. There's going to be a Democratic landslide in 2008, and Right wing talk show hosts will have contributed to it, mark my words.

Rush did not say what they claim he said. It is digitally recorded, he can go back and play it in context. Rush was referring only to one fake solider (really he was fake) not voices of dissent in the military. What the heck is wrong with Harry Reid. I understand he is a partisan hack, but he is just plain stupid to boot!

And as for nominating Duncan Hunter. If it every happens I would absolutely vote for Duncan Hunter in the general election, and then start buying ammo, MREs, and and other survival gear in anticipation of the Hillary Junta taking control.
Mike writes: Wednesday, October, 03, 2007 5:39 PM
It's laughable
The notion that the left really supports the troops while Rush Limbaugh seeks to smear any that disagree with the war is utterly laughable. No sane adult who has been conscious the last three years could possibly believe that.

The left believes our soldiers are baby killers, torturers and mass murderers who are in the military because they were too stupid to stay in school. The last guy they nominated for President launched his political career on such accusations and continues to make them to this day.

The notion that they are the true supporters of the troops is just as laughable as their phony outrage over the alleged “outing” of CIA employee Valerie Plame. The left hates the intelligence community, hates the CIA and has spent decades denouncing CIA covert operatives as assassins and saboteurs that facilitate American imperialism by interfering in other countries. Only a stunning level of evasion can permit this crowd to suddenly claim concern over the status of our covert agents.

And its just as laughable as all the phony outrage over the lack of armored Humvees and body armor in Iraq. Since Vietnam, the left has fought the development of every major combat system the military currently uses. They fought tooth and nail to stop the development and acquisition of the M1 Abrams tank, the Blackhawk helicopter, the Apache attack helicopter, the Bradley fighting vehicle, the F-18 Hornet, the Patriot missile defense system -- you name it, they’ve opposed it. Their pretense at outrage at a lack of equipment of any sort is so preposterous one cannot possible take it seriously.

The left thinks that if they pretend the past doesn’t exist, that pretense will magically wipe it out and keep us from remembering who they really are and what they really advocate. The fools think their evasion of reality wipes out reality. Fortunately, it doesn’t. Reality -- including the reality of what the left actually believes -- is still here.

"Governor Romney would disagree with the negative characterization of those men and women who serve with honor and distinction in the United States Military. What Mitt should have added at the end was; "I'm certain that this also is what Rush believes and any attempt by his detractors to mis-quote him is simply irresponsible."

Both Mitt John McCain, at best, "jumped the gun", responding before they got all the facts. Only Fred Thompson got it right.

'Romney has experienced a September slide in the Granite State. At the beginning of last month, his standing in New Hampshire hovered around 30 percent. Today, it's closer to 25 percent. Three polls in the past week have recorded a decline in his support, with Rudy Giuliani and perhaps even John McCain threatening his position. As the former governor of Massachusetts, Romney can ill-afford a loss in New Hampshire.'

Uh, could someone translate Mitt's message above into English? Does not sound to me like a strong defense of free speech.

Here it is.

"Governor Romney would disagree with the negative characterization of those men and women who serve with honor and distinction in the United States Military. There may be disagreements with individual opinions, but no one would ever dispute the fact that those members of the military who disagree with the war have earned the right to express that opinion."

It was posted at Huffington post.

I went to my e-mail and read the story about Wes Clark calling on congress and yahoo is attributing the story to the Huffington Post. I looked up the Huffington Post and what a liberal rag. I was incorrect in saying that rush called all solders of the Iraq war phony solders. I am outraged that a General Officer would lie and work to undermine our troops. Maybe Wes Clark should put on flak jacket and follow a patrol to remember what it is like to be a solder.

Ok, here's Fred on Limbaugh:

'Congressional Democrats are trying to divert attention from insulting our military leader in Iraq and pandering to the loony left by attacking Rush Limbaugh. He is one of the strongest supporters of our troops, yet Democrats claim he is not being strong enough. I wonder who General Petraeus and his troops think is most supportive?'

I am still looking for Mitt's defense of Rush, can't find it on his web site. Hugh is super quick to get Mitt's wisdom out on the Iranian and the Supreme Court, and now we have an assault on Free Speech from the Senate Dems.

The comparisons of Betrayus to Rush
are comical to say the least. Let's say we believe the transparent lie of the Democrats that Limbaugh was saying that any anti-war vet is a "phony soldier". It's a lie but let's take that as a stipulation and equate the two events. First off, Rush was speaking extemporaneously and in a conversation with another party who first framed the question. Rush endorsed the speakers frame and continued on. It undercuts our stipulation to recount his expansion of that remark on the air so let's just leave it there as the MSM and Lefty vermin will. The Movoners, by comparison, scripted their much MUCH more vicious ad by committee; approved same through as laborious a process as one would expect for an expenditure this large, was granted a discount rate for the ad whose VERY TEXT was in violation of the NYTs stated policies and in contravention of their vaunted "neutrality" on political matters. Further MoveOn is a titanic force in Democrat media, financing and vote drives. Does Limbaugh script policy for the Reps? Fundraise to anything approximating the same degree? For the pessimists, you see that even on the MSMs chosen facts this whole thing just doesn't fly. Beside which, smears only stick if there is already a stink about the target. Does anyone really believe that the Reps or Rush don't "Support the Troops" in this sense or that the Dems/MoveOners do? Hell no.

The issue is the same negligence we encountered during the Clinton 90's.

The Democrats feel they can slander anyone...

The Democrat Party will try to destroy everyone who stands in the way of their petty greed.

The lies about Rush are the same as Nancy saying al Qaeda isn't in Iraq before the 2006 election.

The big problem is, some actually enabled this unethical Democrat effort by not voting.

The only way to stop this ugly Liberal Partisan garbage is to defeat them at the polls.

Time to unite.

If you cannot proudly vote to defeat the Democrat Negligence, you might be part of the problem.

Errr..ummm... your exegesis leaves one scratching his head. Do you have the sand to actually provide textual and analytical support for your unsupported assertion? I don't think so. Do you have, to use a word you might not be familiar with, "precedent" for Limbaugh making anti-military remarks? Impugning soldiers who happen to be anti-war? If I were a union exec I would surely not trust you to make a legal argument!

"As for senators attacking a radio show: No less absurd than Senators condemning a newspaper ad. Your side started this dopiness."

More fuzzy logic. Moveon.org is a supposedly non-profit 501(c)(4) corporation AND a federal PAC organized to " the purpose of influencing a federal election" through advocacy. Its status not empower it to make personal attacks against government officials, including the military. The "ad" part is immaterial, just another red herring.

OTOH, Limbaugh is a private citizen whose political commentary is protected by the First Amendment . The Senate condemn HIM personally, not his company.

For a lawyer, you don't "do" much nuance, do you...

Re: No. 1 - the MSM is mostly ignoring the Rush attacks, and in particular Dingy Harry and his rants ... because the MSM knows that it simply doesn't wash, and that the MediaMatters guys purposely took the Rush comments out of context and grossly distorted their meaning.

Re: No. 2 - the Senate voted to lambaste MoveOn.org's "Betray Us" ad by a lopsided majority ... while the attacks on Rush will never come to a Senate vote (even most of the Dems are stepping away from obvious doo-doo like this loser "issue")

Yeah, there are some Mexican illegals (a sizable number) here whose loyalty is to Mexico not the U.S. If you want to throw them out I am all for it. To suggest all 12 million illegals here think that way is patently false (and of the 12 million illegals here, I think Mexican nationals are about half). And yes I am aware of fringe reconquista movements for the Southwest U.S., the way to handle that is to stop further illegal immigration and make any immgrants who come here work towards assimilation.

To suggest all Mexican nationals here only care about Mexico is untrue. It is a nativist argument. They said the same thing about the Irish, the Germans, the Italians, the French, the Japanese, and on and on. While there are a few who definitely were not loyal, the allegations were generally untrue. We need to treat this matter on a individual basis, not as some blanket threat.

The source of the left's hate
The fundamental source of the left's hate is the utter self-loathing that naturally accompanies the act of surrendering one's reason and independence -- a surrender that was necessary to swallow the complete liberal world view.

When a person surrenders his ability to think independently -- or forgoes ever developing that ability -- he makes himself helpless before the world and utterly dependent on others to tell him what to think, what opinions to hold, what to value, what to oppose, etc. -- he becomes an adult in body but remains a child in mind -- and THAT is a miserable, humiliating experience. The knowledge that he did it to himself -- that he did it for the cheap motive of winning the approval of his liberal professors and liberal friends -- that knowledge transforms the humiliation into self-loathing, for he has only himself to blame for his misery and he knows it.

But such self-loathing is intolerable, and so by the psychological mechanism of projection, he turns that hatred outward toward all those who have NOT surrendered their reason. He becomes a hater of all of the things reason makes possible: ability, competence, financial success and most especially, he becomes a hater of the greatest manifestations of reason on earth: capitalism and the United States of America. For these, and for any who dare to defend them, he reserves a special level of hate, for these are the ultimate reproach, the ultimate proof that the thing he betrayed -- reason -- is an irreplaceable value.

The SBV4T has not lied nor misrepresented themselves IN THE LEAST REGARD. Every man is provably who he says he is, unlike Jesse MacBeth, Beauchamp and the balance of that festering gaggle; Iraqi Veterans Against the War. Kerry is a liar, a coward and a traitor to this nation and just simple human decency. Sure, the Lefties count some real vets among them, like Tillman and that is fine with two provisions. First, the simple fact that there are anti-war and even Leftwing vets does not let the MacBeths, Kerrys and Harkins of this world fabricate their military record. Secondly, the pro-war vets MUST GET EQUAL TIME AND EQUAL RESPECT. In the Sheehan era we know that this is exactly inverted. But it matters little. The War over the War is over. The Battle of Petraeus was a rout for the anti-Americans. They know it. That is the source of this interminable squealing. Music it is, sez I. Music.

From a big-picture perspective, here's what I think is a big part of what's going on...

Gone are the pert and heady of the late 60's and 70's. The formerly-cute chickies have to do a lot more than bat their eyes to keep the men interested; and the once-hunky men, now flabby and grey, have to do more than wink to charm and win the admiration of their peers. "Look at me! I'm still relavent!" they shout.

This vocal minority was in their late teens and 20's when they were "making statements" and "changing things." That puts them in their 50s and 60s today. It true that they are also at the height of their monetary power and influence - afterall, most did ultimately persue important careers; but those days are numbered. Soon their perennially angry rants will sputter into the literal hacks and coughs of old age.

Spot the juvenile
Can anyone imagine Franklin Roosevelt being asked in 1942 about the wars in Europe and the Pacific,

"No, but seriously,......how long do we have to stay there?"

That question reflects a juvenile and unserious view of what war is all about. A nation goes to war for as long as it takes to to win, or until it is defeated.

One doesn't have to be a Republican to understand (cf. Joe Lieberman) that setting a "Win By" date is nothing short of lunacy. One need only be a serious person.

Does anyone remember that draftee soldiers during WWII were in the Army "for the duration"? Think they "wanted to be there" --- as if that's a valid test of whether a war is justified?

Sheesh.

But he has gone no where with Republicans, what makes you think he would do better with Democrats thrown in? A perfect candidate with less than 2% support from his own party?

Immigration is an issue that has gotten out of control, but most Americans do not want to throw the 12 million illegals out. I do not. I want to stop the flow of illegals from borders (north and south) and ports of entry (which is a huge unaddressed problem), increase the flow of legal immigrants (with an emphasis on doctors, engineers, and other hard science professionals, followed by skilled workers, with a limited number of poor laborers at the end), and punish employers with civil penalties who hire illegals.

And as for amnesty--I want to screen the 12 million who are here and throw out the criminals and keep the ones who get on line and go thorugh the process (and the line will not be illusionary, because we will expand legal immigraton to accomodate them).

You guys tell me this is not about prejudice against Latinos and foreigners, but about taking control of our country. Where am I wrong on this?

Congress has become all politics
The reason this stuff is ridiculous (and harming) is that these politicians have put scoring political points above what is good for our country. I'm not talking about differing views. You can have differing views. The only reason for the Senate to debate Rush is to score political points. It has become political all around. Political equals power. So every thought is how these people can stay in power: from voting on condemning a Move-On ad to condemning Rush. Support the troops by actually supporting them. Support Petraeus by actually supporting him and his testimony and plan. Stop the parlor trick BS. Of course, people can say, "Staying in power is good for the country," depending on you ideology. But wouldn't it be a breath of fresh air to have politicians who actually went to work thinking about how best to uphold a Republican form of government, liberty, and our Constitution instead of their political party? George Washington said the experiment is in our hands. The Founders knew that government is designed to power grab at every instance. Well, we need to get in there to make sure the experiment keeps going.

VA Patriot - some polling data for you
Per Gallup in a poll dated June 25-28, 2007:

In your view, what one or two issues should be the top priorities for the president and Congress to deal with at this time?

Situation in Iraq/War - 63%

Immigration/Illegal aliens - 29%

Poor healthcare/ hospitals; high cost of healthcare - 23%

Economy in general - 10%

Fuel/Oil prices/Lack of energy sources/The energy crisis - 7%

Education/Poor education/Access to education - 6%

Social Security - 3%

Poverty/Hunger/Homelessness - 3%

Federal budget deficit/Federal debt -
3%

Environment/Pollution - 3%

Terrorism - 3%

National security - 3%

Taxes - 2%

Unemployment/Jobs - 2%

Poor leadership/Corruption/ Dissatisfaction with government/ Congress/ politicians/candidates - 2%

All other issues polled 1% or less

Bottom line: immigration and the border is an important issue (only slightly more important than health care), but it is far outweighed (by more than two to one) in the minds of most Americans by the war against the Jihadists. Abortion doesn't even rate 1%.

Hugh Hewitt is right: the next President will be determined more than anything else by the war issue.

Fever is Infectious
After listing elsewhere those distinguishing positions of the Democratic front runner, her highness queen radical of cackle, on such things as the MoveOn.org Petraeus ad, Hugh turn to defending Rush by expecting us to believe the American populace is able to determine political slight of hand from slur and slime. I’m with Mike one this one, it’s one thing to be awake and another to be alert.

In your Hillary “60’s Girl” with a possible presidency article, you didn’t mention she signed onto the letter to Clear Channel asking for an apology from them and Rush. So, she has doubled down on her bet the fever is infectious enough to sustain delirium until November 08. It may be working. She has poll numbers with her so far.

My only hope is she will be forced into an extemporaneous event or podium appearance somewhere, somehow, with cameras rolling. She is a calculating, conniving witch who can’t handle an unscripted setting. If she ever shows her ring craven Bilbo side of that personality, it would be the video event of this presidential season.

You are right about one thing. What will matter a year from now, after American media has pounded her drum beat of unrelenting pessimism so long, is whether voters will be able to hear any upbeat message through their bleeding ears.

Sad, sad, sad
I am ashamed for the Senate, once the more respectable chamber, for stooping to this level. But the general acrimony in politics is at an unprecendented level, and there is plenty of blame to go around... For every Moveon.org ad, there is a Swift Boat Veterans; for every Rush attack, there is a Pelosi smear. I think it is hilarious for Hugh, of all people, to get his panties in a bunch over the venomous slander that passes for news, when he fancies himself a journalist and regularly engages in these same types of attacks. Compare his statement, "On to the center-right this blob projects its disfiguring anger, but it doesn't work because most Americans hear and watch for themselves" with the following: "The center-right supports the military and the mission. The left doesn't." And those two are from the same paragraph! A pretty neat trick: pirouetting from indignation over an accusation of being unpatriotic, to making a baseless charge of being unpatriotic, in a a few short sentences!

Give it up, Hugh. You and most of the other names you rattle off on you honor roll are as guilty as anyone else of creating the modern cesspool of political spin. From your disingenous "reporting" (remember "Romney Rising," your attempt dismiss Romney's dive in the polls) to your unseemly smearing of anyone, even conservatives, who don't curry your favor (i.e. a timely "story" on Thompson's health/cancer, the day after his formal entry into the race), you are an agent of untruths and vile attacks, just as your opposites on the lunatic left fringe are.

Ridiculous? Maybe
The left is beginning to flex its new found majority muscle. This incident with Rush seems ridiculous on the surface, but perhaps not. It could also be an answer to the "Betray Us" hysteria or something more sinister still. I am noticing Gen Wesley Clark demands that Rush be taken off Armed Forces Radio.
It is possible that Libs are building a case to reinstate the equal time rule.

Read the Rush transcripts .. he did NOT attack American servicemen and women who disagree with the war. Rush attacked PHOHY SOLDIERS, naming them specifically ... that is, those liars and miscreants and perpertrators of fraud who represented themselves as American military veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan who NEVER SERVED THEREIN.

It's impossible to reason with dolts who purposely avert their brains from any facts that conflict with their distorted world view.

Hugh,
You are giving way too much credit to the political middle. The Left third know all this is a lie but don't care and have a bullhorn; the Right third have disproven the lie but comparatively only have a paper cup with which to announce it; and the Middle third are getting their news from Oprah, The View, and John Stewart without any attempt at corroboration let alone critical thinking. How else can one explain the popularity of a recessive trait of an ideology slowly moving towards sure extinction.

Rudy, Rudy, He's our Hombre

Securing the border and enforcing the law is the only way we get to keep our rule of law, our representative Republic, and our Constitution. If citizenship becomes meaningless, this will no longer be the United States of America.

The so-called "top tier" will not get out the voters necessary for a GOP win. Increasing turnout is the key. Give people something to vote for. Not just the lesser of two evils. Won't work this time. People are fed up with the inundation of illegal aliens. They would come out in droves for the clear choice of D=amnesty or R=enforcement. They will stay home if they both equal amnesty.

There is a huge majority of American citizens waiting for someone to pledge to uphold the laws and secure the borders, let's ignore them some more.

bardseye - you're off topic
This post of Hugh's has nothing to do with abortion policy.

This thread is about the Dems' anti-military underpinnings, which has been rather self-destructive of their political ambitions since the days of the Vietnam War.

Nevertheless, your suggestion that Giuliani supports late term abortions is incorrect. He supports the partial birth abortion ban, which ended the gruesome procedure you describe in your post and accuse Rudy of taking perverse pleasure therein. That's just preposterous.

We are not electing the President of parsed-by-trimesters abortion policy. We're electing the President of the United States of American, and the Commander in Chief of our military forces who protect all of us - pro choice and pro life alike - from those who would gladly incinerate us all.

I am not a Romney guy, or a Thompson guy, or a McCain guy, but I would gladly crawl over broken glass to vote for either of them, or Rudy Giuliani, to protect us from the likes of the leftist-in-centrist's clothing Hillary Clinton, and her minions Harry Reed and Nancy Pelosi and MoveOn.org and George Soros. Any of the leading Republican candidates are great Americans who represent the defense of freedom, the rights of the individual, and that which makes us uniquely American. We Americans are all free to disagree on abortion policy without engaging in anti-Americanism.

Abortion policy is "beside the point" on this issue of Americanism.

Unbelievable
When you step back and think about it, how completely ridiculous is it that the Dems make it a huge issue and TALK ABOUT WHAT A RADIO TALK-SHOW HOST SAID ON HIS PROGRAM ON THE CAPITOL FLOOR! What's even sadder is that they do this regularly. Rush is always playing tape of his name being mentioned by Harry Reid or whoever. How low will they sink? I can't even imagine the Republicans bringing up what Al Franken or anyone else said on some radio show. How pathetic that we have a Congress that wastes time on this.

Which brings me to another point. The left is always offended. They live offended lives. And yet they are the party of tolerance. To tolerate something means to let something that you disagree with go. They are not tolerant because they honestly can't let one single thing go. If Rush said something that they deem "offensive," then it's darn sure gonna make it to the Floor. How stupid.

I have mentioned before that we live in an Age of Apology, and Hugh, you have helped usher that age in with your various calls for apologies over the past few years. Of course it is ridiculous that an "apology" is being demanded in this context, but only slightly moreso than the last ten (or a hundred) times those from the Left and the Right have made such demands.

Pro-American Values Giuliani?
A Giuliani candidacy will be upbeat, traditional and pro-American values? (And notably, Thompson is not mentioned in Mr. Hewitt's list of such candidacies)? I'm a first-trimester only pro-choicer, and I find Giuliani's late-term is ok pro-choicism repellant. My first child was born a year ago. I saw him emerge from hi smother's birth canal. I can see Giuliani standing by with mute approval as, just before that legalistic moment, a "doctor" sticks a scissor blade into the skull.... Pro-American values my eye.

Banjo1, don't worry
Like pure white cats with inbred genetic flaws, most liberals are deaf.

I just can't believe Harry Reid is this stupid. It was simple for Rush to show what he actually said, it was digitally recorded. Of course, what is really going on is an attempt to change the topic from MoveOn.org and the surge. I understand the Dem push for children heath care entitlements (that is politically deft because how can those mean GOPers be against the children?), but this Rush thing is pure foolishness.

I wish I could believe this...
I wish I could believe the public can see through these vulgar attacks on Rush and O'Reilly. But I am not so confident. When every news outlet sets it's so--most people say it's so.

And watching a private citizen attacked on the floor of the senate for sentiments he never stated should make people shudder and remember Soviet thuggery.

I fear a dark age when such lies can stand so easily.
