State Attorney General Rips Nifong a New One: Defendants 'Innocent,' Prosecutors 'Rogue'
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 2:54 PM

Well, you know, the best way you can rip one a new one in a very dignified news conference.

Ace liveblogged the conference, and the folks involved have finally done a good service for the Duke 3, honest prosecutors everywhere, and the state of North Carolina.

Allah will have "amazing" video (high praise from him), and the families of the lax players will be on in just a few.

Update: Here's the full statement. I'll excerpt a few bits.

We believe that these cases were the result of a tragic rush to accuse and a failure to verify serious allegations. Based on the significant inconsistencies between the evidence and the various accounts given by the accusing witness, we believe these three individuals are innocent of these charges.

We approached this case with the understanding that rape and sexual assault victims often have some inconsistencies in their accounts of a traumatic event. However, in this case, the inconsistencies were so significant and so contrary to the evidence that we have no credible evidence that an attack occurred in that house that night...

Next week, we'll be providing a written summary of the important factual findings and some of the specific contradictions that have led us to the conclusion that no attack occurred.

In this case, with the weight of the state behind him, the Durham district attorney pushed forward unchecked. There were many points in the case where caution would have served justice better than bravado. And in the rush to condemn, a community and a state lost the ability to see clearly. Regardless of the reasons this case was pushed forward, the result was wrong. Today, we need to learn from this and keep it from happening again to anybody.

Ambition, not conspiracy.
Let me draw it out:

There are too many lawyers, and, believe it or not, not enough lawsuits to sustain them. Lawyers make good politicians- they are articulate and ambitious. The best way to become successful as a politician is to take on, and defeat, public enemies. This has been the case since Prohibition. Rudy is a case in point. He rose to prominence using RICO to bury organized crime in NY.

This is not to say that being tough on criminals shouldn't be rewarded, only that the type of criminal matters. The left dominates the legal profession. And the left believes that criminality is an arbitrary social construct used by the powerful against the dispossessed. So whom do the left seek to incarcerate?

Enter three white athletes at an elite university.

What is happening in our justice system will never rise to the level of conspiracy. What is happening is that ambitious lawyers are grabbing the nearest branch. Only a wholesale takeover of the judicial branch by persons who know who John Marshall was and why we must revert to his sense of the law, will reverse our course toward oblivion.

Roho
made a good point: How much influence was brought on Nifong to continue to prosecute a fatally flawed case?

I think that the US DOJ should indict Nifong for violation of civil rights, subpoena his phone records/e-mails and see if Jackson/Sharpton et al contacted him.

If they did, subpoena them and put them in front of a federal grand jury.

Enough is enough.

Nifong not alone
Nifong had a host of well-known accomplices. We owe them a fair share of the ridicule.

Who is best supporting actor?
I hope the State jumps on Nifong like a mass murder case! He has an entire staff of assistant D.A.'s, as well as support personell. I want to know about preasure? Not just blind ambition for re-election(And there was plenty I'm Sure!)but, I want to know about any preasure applied by "Powerful Black Caucus's". Was the Rev. Jessie up in the mix? Or Sharpton? Or N.A.A.C.P. preasure?......I saw the "Black Panthers" marching the streets and making threats like the gestapo, and I caught the interviews on "Hanity" with "Bimbo Black Panther" leadership.......But was there any NATIONAL PC preasure? Inquiring minds want to know!..........And I hope the accused BANKRUPTS the community before it's over.

Even Nifong wouldn't stoop that low.

Taking bets on what Nifong does next?
I came up with these possibilities:

Looks like Mike Nifong will be the center of attention for the next 24 hours. What are his choices?

1. Grab 10k, a cheap disguise and hop in the Bronco, heading for Mexico (OJ scenario).

2. Check into rehab (celebrity scenario).

3. Engage in a totally ridiculous suicide attempt such as swallowing an entire bottle of tranquilizers, then immediately call an ambulance, which takes you to a hospital for a stomach pumping;

4. Get caught DUI after wrecking your car, then taken to a state mental hospital after waving a gun around and making racial slurs;

5. Curl into a fetal position and crawl under a couch, from whence you have to be dragged (Jim Bakker scenario).
