WHAT Was He Thinking?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 5:05 PM
Speaking on behalf of John McCain, Mike Huckabee actually made a joking off-hand comment about someone aiming a gun at Barack Obama.

Yes, it was a joke.  Yes, it seemed unscripted.  But one never, ever, ever jokes about the possibility of a rival (or anyone, for that matter) being assassinated.  Especially when many genuinely fear for that candidate's safety because of his race.

Such a remark isn't just wrong and graceless.  It's downright dumb.  Huckabee owes Barack, his supporters -- and, for that matter -- John McCain an apology.

Geez.  With friends like Huckabee, neither Republicans nor gun owners need adversaries.

Wow, if this is the best you Mitt Koolaid drinkers have to go on, you guys are sad.

Huck apologized. Obama didn't even make a big deal about it. Don't see it as much of a story as you want to...

Not sure if McCain needs Huck. If he does, it is because he is so weak in the south that he's afraid Barr might tip some states to Obama. More likely, he'll take someone like Sanford.

I sometimes hear the Latter-day Saints instructed about the way they should treat strangers; they are told to extend to all men due respect and kindness. You would not be a Latter-day Saint if you did not; you would not manifest the Spirit of the Gospel did you not show them due kindness, and respect; but remember, at the same time, that you do not compromise yourselves. In trying to be kind and courteous to others, we sometimes place ourselves in their power, and as sure as we do, bad men will take advantage of it. How was the counsel given by the Savior to the Apostles, "Be ye, therefore, as wise as serpents and us harmless as doves."

A question may be asked-"Will mothers have their children in eternity?" Yes! yes! Mothers, you shall have your children; for they shall have eternal life; for their debt is paid. There is no damnation awaits them, for they are in the spirit. But as the child dies, so shall it rise from the dead, and be for ever living in the learning of God. It will never grow: it will still be the child, in the same precise form as it appeared before it died out of its mother's arms, but possessing all the intelligence of a God. Children dwell in the mansions of glory and exercise power, but appear in the same form as when on earth. Eternity is full of thrones, upon which dwell thousands of children reigning on thrones of glory, with not one cubit added to their stature.

Just think, I’m John McCain and I want to pass some really unpopular legislation. I send Huckabee out to talk to people; he says something really stupid and offensive; huge firestorm erupts. In the meantime, I sneak my horrible legislation through. Huckabee would be a perfect pick for McCain. I mean, if you imagine as I do, McCain’s Presidency as a giant turd sandwich; Huckabee would be the sprig of parsley. What I Learned This Week

Of course it's hideously embarrasing
I wasn't there, but going by the descriptions of the event, both Karl Rove and Col. North just gave speeches on gun rights.

If they gave good speeches, then the atmosphere in the place was probably feisty. In that context, I can sort of understand the "joke"; it's probable that people just sat through two rousing speeches detailing how people like Obama were trying to take our gun rights away. Huck is up and senses that people are righteously indignant. A chair falls over, causing a loud bang. Huck tries a quip that doesn't work, and apologizes later.

But I agree that it looks like this incident takes Huckabee out of the running for VP.

Then again, Huckabee's saying something that annoys a segment of conservatives actually may be attractive to McCain.

Nevertheless, when I heard this, I instinctively ducked my head in embarrassment, even though I was alone. Of course, when I read the headline, I automatically interpreted it as saying that Huckabee was joking that HE was going to point a gun at Obama, and that's probably how the incident will be remembered, unfortunately.

Synthesizer,

I don't know how Dan in SC arrives at the position that Bob Barr is 1000X times more conservative than John McCain.

Bob Barr opposes the Iraq War, and Barr doesn't see anything wrong with the way the California Supreme Court used judicial activism to strike down the democratic (small 'd') will of the people regarding same-sex marriage.

Food for thought; if Barr doesn't see anything wrong with judicial activism in California, does that give you confidence in his ability to make good nominations to the federal judiciary ?
