McCain's Maneuver
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:26 PM

The little maneuver the McCainiacs pulled to win West Virginia is interesting, in that it happened early enough in the day to have other consequences (other than merely awarding delegates.)

1.  This could inspire Huck supporters in southern states to vote for Huck (of course, this helps McCain).

2.  But it could also be seen as a dirty trick, and backfire on McCain in states like California.

Time will tell, but this sure is interesting!

Update: I just received a press release from the Romney camp about the maneuver.

Thought question re WV and after today
The WV outcome probably should be no surprise. On the subsequent ballot, McCain's votes had to go somewhere. What surprises me is the apparent decision for the Paul voters to also go to Huckabee.

but the outcome underscores a serious problem should Romney remain alive and still viable after today's voting. Would not Huckabee ultimately throw his delegates to McCain and still give him victory?

If there are not enough votes left out there for Romney to secure the needed delegates on his own,is there any option remaining for us 3-legged stool conservatives to try to overthrown McCain as the likely nominee. To get to a brokered convention that would allow Romney to emerge the winner? Just asking.

McCain is sealing his fate
Just goes to prove the old adage of giving a man enough rope.

If there were any conservatives left who would vote for him in November, he sure has kicked them in the teeth on this one.

Standare MO for McCain.

Yes, it is a dirty trick
Another example of behind-the-scenes Washington insider politics, in this case denying a win to the principled base. McCain's tactics seem to be revealing him to be practically devoid of principle.

Will this paint Mccain with the SLIME
brush? Let's hope so. Let's hope those 18 delegates cost McCain the nomination.

Even worse than McCain instructing his people to vote for Huckabee was Huckabee BRIBING Paul voters by offering delegates to get his votes.

Depends on how the MSM plays this - but America does NOT like this kind of cloak-room maneuvering to overwhelm their will.

You would have us believe that McCain was actually there telling his delegates what to do.

This is the same song that was sung after FL.

You all have commented on McCains temper.

Today we witness Romney and Rush throwing a fit, and the day has just begun.

I'll make a bet. If McCain loses he will come out, be a bit disappointed, but give a respectful speech. If Romney loses he will come out, clearly upset, and claim wide spread cheating.

Romney will not unify this party, he will not even try. McCain will make every effort to bring all the republicans together.

It's all about character.

He makes Bill Clinton look ethical. This is a low dirty trick and will only further hurt him with the GOP base. Even if he gets the nod somehow by stealing it, he sure as heck wont get the base vote.

Be sure to thank Huck and McCain for 4 years of Hitlary.

Seriously he should resign from his Senate position and remove himself from the race. he is a disgrace to our Republic and a traitor.

Nobody hearts Romney!
Romney has no friends other than his Koolaid drinking zombie supporters. There is no way in hell a Huckabee supporter would ever support Romney after the millions of dollars worth of attack ads – breaking Ronald Reagan’s 11th Commandment (thou shalt not attack a fellow Republican). I suspect that there is no way that McCain supporters will support Romney for the same reason.
Romney is being exposed for the manipulative character that he is… Play a little fairer earlier on and I doubt that the bridges would be so utterly burnt beyond repair.

First of all, you're wrong. McCain didn't win West Virginia, Huckabee did.

Second, THIS WAS A CAUCUS! When you don't have enough votes to get over 50% (as TrueHawk notes) your caucusers go elsewhere. That's the way these things work! This is no back room deal. I bet Romney wouldn't be whining if Huckabee had thrown his support to Romney.

And it's OK to keep touting that a vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain, so you better vote for Romney, yet when the tables are turned as was the case in W. If you are a Romney supporter what I'm saying is you should be much more concerned about the way Romney is reacting to the loss rather than the loss itself. Do you not see parallels between this and the Dean Scream?

I'm actually trying to help you out. You need to get on the phone and email and tell the campaign how this is looking. My utter amazement is that with all those highly paid political advisers apparently not one of them is able to understand that Americans don't like poor sports. If you lose you congratulate the winner and move on. Does his campaign staff not understand that lots of people are still voting?

This will go down as the stupidest political move ever. If you wanted to complain and unleash then at least wait til the polls closed in California where you had a decent chance of beating McCain. If you now lose California you can look to this and the Dole statement as good reasons.

Huckabee has been sold as a 2nd tier candidate bucking the trend. Huckabee supporters regularly post that Huckabee is hated by the "higher-ups" in the Republican party. The Ron Paul supporters, who have effectively been told "get out of the GOP, we don't want your vote" probably joined Huckabee since he was the biggest outsider.

Why is the Romney camp so upset? All week they've been talking about how bad Mc Cain is and how Huckabee's supporters should abandon Huck and vote for Romney. As most Huckabee supporters posting here have said, there's no way they are going to desert their man, so that message was wasted on them. However, it appears that the Mc Cain delegates were listening. Once they realized that Mc Cain could not win on the second ballot, they remembered what they had heard on the radio, seen on FOX News and read here about McCain and realized you guys were right. So they abandoned Mc Cain. Unfortunately for you it seems they were only half listening and chose to go with Huckabee instead. Keep up the negative attacks, they almost worked this time.

Blame Ron Paul
This was the result after the first ballot:

Romney 464
Huckabee 375
Mc Cain 176
Paul 118

That adds up to 1133 votes.

In order to win you need half of that, 567. Ron Paul was eliminated, so those 118 votes have to go somewhere else in the second round.

Since it is reasonable to assume that the Romney voters will vote for Romney and the Huckabee voters will vote for Huckabee in the second round, it makes no sense for the Mc Cain voters to vote for him again, because even if they pick up all the Ron Paul voters they're not going to have anough votes to win and they'll be eliminated and only to have to vote again.

In order to win in the second round, Romney needed to pick up 103 of the 118 Ron Paul voters, since the Mc Cain voters would not vote for Romney due to the negative attacks.

Huckabee needed to pick up 192 votes, but he had a pool of 294 to chose from. Assuming all 176 Mc Cain voters switched to Huckabee, he still needed 16 votes from Ron Paul to win.

The final count was
Huckabee 567

I am RIGHT writes: Tuesday, February, 05, 2008 8:01 PM
McCain is a political coward
McCain is afraid of a straight on fight with Romney...he needs Huckster to win...what a coward. This is what we can expect from a McCain presidency...deception, games and liberal policies enacted.

McCain is the weakest canidate possible.

To really top it off...McCain and Dole should run on the same ticket...for certain failure.

Obama could stay home all year and still win.

Republicans...it is time to wake up.
