Pope Sorta Apologizes Again
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:26 AM

Update: The first casualty of "Muslim rage"-- an Italian nun in her 70s, shot in the back three times at a hospital in Somalia. Muslim machismo. Sickos. Sure you guys don't just want to sit down and talk? Michelle Malkin has more on the nun and the work she has done in Mogadishu.

The Pope had another "sorry" to say today, but he still loaded it with quite a bit of "I'm sorry you misunderstood" sentiment, as he should have.

Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday he was "deeply sorry" about the angry reaction sparked by his speech about Islam and holy war and said the text did not reflect his personal opinion.

"These (words) were in fact a quotation from a medieval text which do not in any way express my personal thought," Benedict told pilgrims at his summer palace outside Rome.

"Guys, I was quoting someone."

The pope's lecture was meant as a reflection on "the relationship between religion and violence in general, and to conclude with a clear and radical rejection of the religious motivation for violence, from whatever side it may come,'' said yesterday's statement from the Vatican.

"But I was still totally calling y'all out for all this beheading and conversion-at-gunpoint crap, and I still am."

The lecture was an invitation to a "frank and sincere dialogue with great reciprocal respect,'' the pope said today. "I hope that this will placate spirits and clear up the true meaning of my speech.''

"So, you wanna talk now that you're done burning things?" Update: Guess not.

Yeah, the Muslim world hasn't been so big on the "frank and sincere dialogue" and "reciprocal respect."

Surprisingly, the Muslim Brotherhood accepts the apology:

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood said Pope Benedict had apologized sufficiently on Sunday for remarks on Islam that angered many in the Muslim world.

"We consider that the new statements represent a retreat from what went before," Brotherhood deputy leader Mohammed Habib told Reuters.

"We can consider them a sufficient apology, even if we had wanted the pope to outline his ideas and vision of Islam," said Habib, whose opposition Islamist group has inspired similar movements across the Arab world.

The Pope said he was "deeply sorry" At the anger caused by his remarks on Islam and said a quote he used from a medieval text about holy wars did not reflect his personal thoughts.

Update: Muslim Brotherhood: "Can we please get the outrage memos coordinated better? We can't be accepting apologies while our brothers down in Somalia are still issuing fatwas, 'kay? We have got to stay on message, people."

The Vatican's No. 2 says there's no reason as of yet to cancel the Pope's trip to Turkey, and that he hopes the Pontiff will make the trip. I'm betting he will. He's pretty brassy.

"And, you ain't keepin' me from going to Turkey either because a) I'm blessed and b) I got a Popemobile, 'cause that's just how I roll."

Update: Go on wit yer bad self, Mr. Howard. From his multicultural spokesman:

"And because it is your faith that is being invoked as justification for these evil acts, it is your problem.

"You can't wish it away, or ignore it, just because it has been caused by others.

Cue the enraged rioters.

If it wasn't so absurd it would be scary.

Where's the apology from the Muslins
For once I would like to hear an apology from the Muslins. Not once have I heard any Muslin apologize for the actions of Muslin terrorist anywhere around the world. Instead they love to position themselves where someone is always apologizing to them for even bringing up the subject of Islam. Islam is not perfect and neither are the teachings. The terrorist are proof of this. If we're hearing from Muslins now who aren't terrorist, where were their voices when terrorist were killing innocent civilians. They weren't protesting in the streets about the killing their Muslins brothers were doing. If you don't protest about those who misinterpret your religion, then you must agree with those who do the acts of terrorism. If thats all it takes is a quote from history to make Muslins burn Christian Churches and kill an elderly nun then there's a terrorist in every Muslin waiting to get out.

I think he has the right idea
For 25+ years radical islam has grown more and more threatening while the West sleeps. Killing a priest or nun isn't that big of deal, Hilter murder thousands and no one remembers or cares. I think the pope is going down the hard road, he takes line with the muslims and forces them to take a babystep to join the 21 century or they take a shot at him. The muslims have been successful with dividing their foes and picking their targets but taking out the pope angers the populations in several counties and might just unite them enough to finally take stand. Even Mexico and Brazil might find themselves taking action.

Direct Current is to be applauded for taking the time to see what the Pope actually said.

One reply to DC. Al Sistani is a moderate Ayatollah. His intervention in Iraq has been exemplary.

Stop apologizing
I wish the pope would stop apologizing. He did not say anything wrong and it is not his fault if people are looking for excuses to get angry. I write more in my blog about my frustrations with Muslims who are so eager to be offended.

Myth of moderate Islam
I will say this about the Islamic reaction to the Pope's lecture. It proves that there is no such thing as moderate Islam. Where are the Islamic protests opposing this violence? Where are the Immams urging their people to peace? They don't exist. Instead all we get are statements that the Pope shouldn't have said what he did. All from people who never read or heard the lecture in the first place.
Right in Seattle writes: Sunday, September, 17, 2006 1:10 PM
Pope's lecture was NOT about Islam
The Pope's lecture was about faith and reason. "The pope's lecture was meant as a reflection on "the relationship between religion and violence in general..." NO IT WAS NOT!!! This writer clearly couldn't take the 10 minutes or so to read the bloody thing. Or may he did and couldn't understand it.

EVERYONE in the MEDIA distorts what the Pope actually said. He had absolutely nothing to apologize for.

Let's Not and let them say we Did
The only way out for the followers of Muhammad is to accept the pope's non-apology as though it were an apology. Otherwise, the dialogue thus far looks like this:

Pop: "Even our most erudite have thought that the Qur'an adds something evil and inhuman to the dialogue between us. They have thought that, according to the Qur'an, the word of God must be spread by bullying, threats and violence. "

Mus: "You are wrong, Infidel! Die! Allahuakhbar! Allahuakhbar! Death to you!"

Pop: "However, we have deep respect for what the followers of Muhammad have in common with us, and trust that they will affirm that this would be a contradiction of the nature of God."

Mus: ?
