Four More Bishops Blast Pelosi
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 10:12 AM
  • Archbishop Neinstadt of St. Paul, MN
  • Archbishop Gomez and Bishop Contu of San Antonio
  • Bishop Farell of Dallas, TX
  • Nancy Pelosi has single-handedly energized the Roman Catholic hierarchy into effective action against her attempt to obscure Roman Catholic teaching on the rights of the unborn.  In so doing, she has also made it very clear to Mass-attending Catholics that their votes in November are moral acts which their Church considers to be hugely significant. (HT: PowderTracks.)

I'd like to than the Speaker for raising this issue at this time, and for provoking so many of the bishops to act with such speed and clarity.

And kudos to Archbishop Chaput for leading the way on Monday.   For a complete explanation of the Church's teaching on the political responsibilites of the faithful, get the archbishop's new book, Render Unto Caesar.

    "These guys don't like
condoms, IUDs, the pill, or vasectomies either.

They are either celibate or gay.

Give it up Hugh. It is a road to nowhere."

Briggsy sounds like the shallow type of person who allows their genitals to dictate how they live their life.

By the way Briggsy, prior to the 1930 Lambeth Conference, all Protestant denominations condemned artificial contraception as evil.

    Thanks, dooz,
Previous elections, the Catholic bishops/cardinals, stayed quite timid on abortion issue, and the teaching of the church. I remember, during John Kerry's campaign, the Washington D.C., & N.Y. York Cardinals, both gave Kerry, and Kennedys; a pass on abortion issue. Thank God, it did not happen, again.
Yes, years ago, we had the problem with the abuse in our Church, was horrible, again, comparing to the number of good and devout priests we have, while condemning the abuse, a lot of our good decent priests were publicly insulted and humiliated.
The Church has suffered, has apologized sincerely, & corrected the wrong, on the abuse.
Therefore, I do not accept the argument of those, going back in time on the abuse issue, the church has corrected and stopped the abuse, and has every moral authority to speak out on the principle of the human rights of the unborn.

Briggsy. Are you even aware of how many Catholics are Democratic voters? This issue that Pelosi has stupidly brought to the forefront of debate will only put a dent in those voters for the libtard party. Bishops have been so lax in publicly speaking for the correct right to life church policy for years and now have a golden opportunity to make a difference this election thanks to the moron Pelosi. Your moron Pelosi Briggsy!

    Attaboys to Bishops
Re the Roman Catholic Church: You can poke and prod a hibernating bear and get nothing more than a stir--until you reach a point where you'd better be able to run fast and climb high. Is that Ms. Pelosi up that tree? Yes, MaryStella, kudos to RC leaders for leading in this one.

    Another Myth
Re "truthseeker" and marty: Another myth, I think actually believed by the Dems and certainly argued by MSM, is that "most Americans" (choose from the following): don't care about moral issues, favor "a woman's right to choose", vote along party lines, don't have a religion or it doesn't affect their daily lives, want more services from government.... The truth seems to be more that most Americans want morality in our leaders, oppose or are uncomfortable with abortion, and simply don't share the values of the current Democrat leaders.

Age-old persuasion trick: convince people that if they disagree with you they stand alone, that your view is held by "nearly everyone", "anybody who understands", "all the top thinkers". It takes a huge confidence to stand alone, even if you're totally right and 100%, evidence-based, assured of it.

    Go, Pelosi (seriously: Go)
This is going to impact heavily on those whom Garrison Keillor calls "Yellow-dog Democrats" (they'd vote for an old yellow dog before a Republican). The Democrats have counted on the votes of "the common person" they claim to stand for, blue-collar, urban, drive Chevys. Many are practicing Catholics and will listen to their bishops and priests. Pelosi has, if not lost them, given them a reason to stop and think (the last thing the Democrats want!)

So once these folks step back from their habitual party-lines voting, once someone says, "not EVERYone believes this way", I expect many will also notice that Obama & Co. don't share the "common person's" values, and will for the first time in generations actually consider voting for a Republican.

    The question now remains...
Will Catholics get their instructions on morality from the Church or from politicians that openly advocate things we know are wrong???
Cicero writes: Friday, August, 29, 2008 1:03 PM
    Kudos to these bishops
And I agree that excommunications are warranted. They are long overdue, in fact.

Pres., needs experience, where is '0's?!
Truthseeker you will be eating your words! Sara,
the winning ticket! Obama didn't have the good sense to pick the heavyweight Hillary over the lightweight Biden, that was his undoing! So what, if Sara doesn't have the foreign affairs experience, she isn't going to be the decision maker! What about the Rookie Obamas lack of knowledge and he is the Decided, not a Vice President! Ex Democrat Go Sara and McCain
Marty writes: Friday, August, 29, 2008 12:10 PM
    EVERYONE CARES ABOUT THIS!!
For crying out loud, is the Democratic Party that vacuous on moral truth? Geez!. This law (Roe v. Wade) is going to be overturned and returned to the states; if not now, then in the coming years. Anyone who thinks no one cares about this is really not paying attention to those around them.
Duane writes: Friday, August, 29, 2008 11:42 AM
    Toss Her Out!
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia excommunication is an act of ecclesiastical jurisdiction, the rules of which it follows. Hence the general principle: whoever has jurisdiction in the forum externum, properly so called, can excommunicate, but only his own subjects. Therefore, whether excommunications be a jure (by the law) or ab homine (under form of sentence or precept), they may come from the pope alone or a general council for the entire Church; from the provincial council for an ecclesiastical province; from the bishop for his diocese; from the prelate nullius for quasi-diocesan territories; and from regular prelates for religious orders. Moreover, anyone can excommunicate who, by virtue of his office, even when delegated, has contentious jurisdiction in the forum externum; for instance, papal legates, vicars capitular, and vicars-general.

So why don’t the bishops show some courage do the right thing and toss Pelosi out of the church?
MaryStella writes: Friday, August, 29, 2008 11:24 AM
    IT'S ABOUT TIME,
As a Catholic I am delighted, and believe me, the church has changed, and we are so relieved that finally our bishops and cardinals are speaking up.
Yes, on life issue, we are pro-life and all the Catholic politican are going to hear this loud and clear.
The Catholics and so energized and for the first time, you see more of this, just letting our politician know where the church stands on when the baby gets THE HUMAN RIGHTS.

One other outcome from these rebukes...

Ridge and Lieberman and any other pro choice options were knocked off the list. It may have hurt Romney a little too.

These rebukes also elevated Palin. Pro Choice, all class, fiscal hawk, no nonsense speaker....

    Slow Joe - get ready....
