The 'GOV. SARAH PALIN WARNS WAR MAY BE NECESSARY IF RUSSIA INVADES ANOTHER COUNTRY' Hype ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 7:33 PM
http://images.eonline.com/eol_images/Entire_Site/20080910/425.palin.gibson.091008.jpg

The liberals are beside themselves over Palin's answer to one of Charles Gibson's questions, in which she stated that war with Russia might possibly be necessary if Russia were to invade another one of the former states of the Soviet Union -- and if that nation were a member of NATO.

Palin's answer was hyped on ABC's website, with the teaser:  'GOV. SARAH PALIN WARNS WAR MAY BE NECESSARY IF RUSSIA INVADES ANOTHER COUNTRY.'

Of course, this is pure hype and misrepresentation.

Here's the excerpt:

GIBSON: And under the NATO treaty, wouldn't we then have to go to war if Russia went into Georgia?

PALIN: Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.

But NATO, I think, should include Ukraine, definitely, at this point and I think that we need to -- especially with new leadership coming in on January 20, being sworn on, on either ticket, we have got to make sure that we strengthen our allies, our ties with each one of those NATO members.

We have got to make sure that that is the group that can be counted upon to defend one another in a very dangerous world today.

GIBSON: And you think it would be worth it to the United States, Georgia is worth it to the United States to go to war if Russia were to invade.

PALIN: What I think is that smaller democratic countries that are invaded by a larger power is something for us to be vigilant against. We have got to be cognizant of what the consequences are if a larger power is able to take over smaller democratic countries.

And we have got to be vigilant. We have got to show the support, in this case, for Georgia. The support that we can show is economic sanctions perhaps against Russia, if this is what it leads to.

It doesn't have to lead to war and it doesn't have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries.

His mission, if it is to control energy supplies, also, coming from and through Russia, that's a dangerous position for our world to be in, if we were to allow that to happen.

... Of course, the Left is going to try to use this to misrepresent what was actually said.  And they will ignore her points about economic sanctions.

First, the operative word is "perhaps" -- she said we would "perhaps" go to war.  Second, the question assumed that the country invaded would be a member of NATO.  We are obliged to defend any member of NATO.  Third, what should she have said ... that if she were president, Russia could do whatever the heck they want without fear of any consequences?  That would have emboldened Russia to do as they please...

Gibson...the pompous jackass
Gibson looked and acted like a jerk. He didn't help the MSM's image one bit. I wanted to just slap those glasses right off of his face...and I wear glasses.

He came off as a pompous jackass. He had a big old soar puss, and clearly showed his absolute disdain for Sarah. He appeared to be saying... "You are one of the great unwashwed...the peasant class...it really grates on me that I have to interview this "lipsticked pig"

Charlie...you can go pound sand like the rest of the S.O.B. mainstream media. You guys wouldn't know an honest to good American if your life depended on it.

Crazy idea
We need to get out of the internal affairs of other countries. Here's an idea for conservatives. If a country wants to hide behind American soldiers, we should have one clear set of rules: Become a US state or territory. Get out of NATO, get out of the UN, and stop getting involved with all of these entangling alliances.
scottbushee writes: Friday, September, 12, 2008 3:32 AM
Why are we in NATO again?
We're missing the real point. She's right, that we'd have to defend any attack on a NATO member. So let's get out of NATO.

War is evil. Good intentioned people can disagree on the necessity of that evil with regards to certain events, but only a moral retard would disgree that it's evil. Even McCain said as much in his acceptance speech.

So let's limit war to times that American lives and soil is in danger, not just 'American interests.' That's too vague. Besides, this is contradictory to the rest of the Palin/McCain ticket. You can't push for energy independence and then get all beligerant in the defense of a foreign oil pipeline.

Here's a possible response to the Georgia situation:

"We believe that people have the right to self determination. This country was founded on such a right. Therefore, if parts of Georgia wish to break away from Georgia, just as parts of the British Empire wished to 'disolve the political bands which have connected them to another' then they have the right to do so. We believe that Russia is acting in self interest, and not in the interest of those who wish to break away. So I propose that Russia, in order to show that it means what it says, allow outside independent people to monitor a vote to see if those people truly wish to break away from Georgia. If that vote shows a 3/4 majority, then we will respect the democratic rights of those groups to seek independence"

Sully Lies, The Atlantic's Rep Dies
Pathological liar Andrew Sullivan said this today:

"But this exchange is a classic example of how she tends to lie reflexively when caught in an uncomfortable part of her record:

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God." Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: You know, I don't know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words."

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/0 9/one-preliminary.html

Here is the correct quote from Governor Palin:

“Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”

http://hotair.com/archives/2008/09/04/yawn-the-ap-smears-pa lin-over-prayer-for-troops-in-iraq/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H-btXPfhGs

http://hotair.com/archives/2008/09/11/open-thread-palin-on- abc/

And that quote is a paraphrase of a prayer Abraham Lincoln gave in the Civil War.

Charlie Gibson (I assume unintentionally) made a mistake by relying on the AP's version which misquoted and truncated what Gov. Palin actual said. Given Andrew Sullivan's pathological slanders and libels over the last two weeks triggered by his fears of Obama losing, I assume Sully is just lying.

She was tense (who wouldn't be the first time out), but held her own.

Trust me; women will not appreciate Charlie's one up-one down attitude. SHE'S a Governor and a candidate for VP. HE'S just a supercilious interviewer.

I liked Palin too...
I thought she was a little nervous tonight but she's not use to rambling endlessly like Professor Obama or the gabby Biden on the senate floor, and on substance there was nothing damaging done, her style will get better as she relaxes more. She'll get ripped apart by the MSM, but they can only rip her on style, if she can hold Obama and Biden to account on the things Obama said during the primary, and things that he has flipped on since, she'll be fine. Some flip flopping is to be expected but Obama has flipped on...
the behavior of the troops (no longer murderous thugs of poor Iragi's like he once called them),
flipped on drilling
flipped on taxes
flipped on bridge to nowhere (Obama and Biden voted for it at the expense of Katrina victims),
flipped on gun control
flipped on Georgia
Flipped on Israel
flipped on abortion (from his born alive vote)
Of course it's hard to call someone (Obama) a liar if he can always stake out 2 positions on each issue, like the generous press lets him do.

Good Job Governor
I was impressed with how well Gov. Palin did to the harassing interview that Gibson tried to pull off tonite. I personally lost any remaining respect I had for Gibson or ABC (which seems to have jumped on the NBC/Obama bandwagon). Regarding the NATO/Russia question, I wonder if anyone remembers the way Hitler invaded Germany's neighbors and the lack of response by the rest of the world until it led to WWII.

Sarah - a new face - so far so good
My wife and I watched speeches both for both the conventions. I must say we were pleasantly surprised at how well she has started. I knew very little of her, so we have poked around a bit online. She seems like a great pick to me; a real smart move by McCain for a number of reasons. As for the media, I think some of them are afraid of her. They either thought or hoping that McCain would not have the smarts of the guts to make such a bold move; I think it’s great.

I have watched the liberal media for nearly twenty years now; nothing new here with what they are doing with Palin. They are the masters at taking comments out of context and then creating headlines that are designed to shock but typically do not line up with reality. For them it’s not about simply reporting the news, it is about using rhetoric to push their personal or corporate liberal agenda. I will say this though, many of them are true believers in their cause, and therefore they do not see what they are doing as bad. To the contrary they see themselves as great crusaders. They use a pen instead of sword. Perhaps this year has seen this more often and flagrantly than the in the past.

I live on the East Coast now for ten years. I lived in Los Angles and worked for the LA Times for over a decade and the more I used to read my paper the harder it became to remain enthusiastic about my company. I experienced firsthand roaming the halls and rubbing elbows with the media elite. They do think very highly of themselves.

which means there are questions that will look like a robot on because the VP is there to support the top of the tickets position. McCain has the luxury to tweek his response as needed, to the Israel question but Palin did not. Last note on the Georgia issue I thought Gibson was asking a hypothetical question if Georgia was in NATO, in that case Palin's answer was certainly correct, and even in not in NATO, Russia can't just roll in without penalties.

What is NATO if....
we already tell the Russians that the US won't support the small NATO countries in eastern europe if they are attacked? Is NATO just a big game of texas holdem where we just hope to hell Russia doesn't call the US on it. I think the cold war is back, and that means all concerns of the US and Russia being 5 minutes to midnight on the nuke clock need to be respected, and if Russia and the US step on each others toes a nuke might be dusted off and used. Just because the US and Russia have had enough discipline to abstain from trying a nuke sucker punch the last 60 years doesn't mean it can't happen. It's with this thought in mind that I liked Gov Palin being disciplined enough to say yes an attack on a NATO country a direct response without hesitation. Keep in mind it was Iraq feeling that there would be no response from the US for the Kuwait invasion that got everything rolling the past 16 years. The worst thing Gov Palin could have done is say well the mutual defense and response of being in NATO is more of a guideline than anything else, and I was happy to see she didn't say that.

I loved the Israel question x 3 tries
I disagree with John above, who said she misunderstood the Israel question. I think she understood it perfectly, and stuck to her guns.

Sarah was asked about Israel's right to do a preemptive attack on Iran (sound like our Bush doctrine?) and she basically said they have the same right to protect themselves that we have. She said "I don't think that we should second guess the measures that Israel has to take to defend themselves and for their security."

Interviewer Gibson didn't like her answer, so he rephrased the question and pressed her again but harder. She gave the same identical answer.

Clearly, he didn't like that answer either, so he rephrased his question yet again and pressed her again even harder. She gave the same identical answer yet again.

Clearly, he was pressuring her to give an answer he could use to attack her with. She wasn't buying it. She didn't flinch. She was not intimidated by him. She was sticking to her response, no matter how many times he asked it. I loved that exchange. She doesn't take crap from anyone.

Good for Sarah!

Bush Doctrine Revisited
It seems the problem I originally had with Palin's initial response to the question about the Bush Doctrine was actually no problem at all.
I thought the Bush Doctrine was "you are either with us, or with the terrorists."
No I find out that the Bush Doctrine encompasses much more...
It includes preemptive strikes, spreading democracy and freedom, and much much more...
So Palin actually outwitted Gibson on this one, where he makes the haughty assertion that the Bush Doctrine is limited to one thing...
Palin actually understood it to mean much much more...

Sorry Charlie
Excuse me; "Bush Doctrine" - this was entirely concocted by the media; I know in the entertainment world that MSM really is, 24 minutes is a lifetime, but an opinion by a sitting president of USA is NOT a doctrine unless subsequent administrations commit to it and follow it. Then it is a doctrine, because America says, no matter what, no matter who is the president, such-and-such is what America will do. Otherwise... does Charlie know what the Clinton Doctrine is? Whaaat?!? Bill Clinton DID express an opinion on september 15th 1995. OK Charlie quick now, what IS the Clinton Doctrine. Don't know? What a moron.
OK, How about the Carter Doctrine? No? The Nixon Doctrine? The Johnson Doctrine?
Repeat after me. A presidential opinion becomes a doctrine only if subsequent administrations continue it. If they ignore it, it is only an opinion of a past president. Since we don't know what subsequent administration will do with Bush's opinion on pre-emptive strikes, it is not a doctrine; and Palin or anyone else is not obligated to know it.
Sorry Charlie!

Shocking! McCain, Obama, Biden & Palin
all agree on Georgia. The Weekly Standard reports:

All Palin said was that Ukraine and Georgia deserve NATO membership--a measure that the Senate unanimously endorsed last April, when it passed a resolution sponsored by Joe Biden--and cosponsored by John McCain and Barack Obama. NATO's Article 5 states that an attack on one member country is to be considered an attack on all. If people are really so concerned that NATO membership for Georgia will lead to war, then they ought to vote for Ralph Nader.

The Washington Post comments on Palin

For some reason I decided to check out the Washington Post's comments section on Palin's interview. This is what they are saying...

1. She doesn't know what the Bush Docrtine is
(Do most of them know what it is?)
2. She is going to nuke Russia tomorrow!
3. She is an idiot.
(I interpret that as they are scared of her)
4. She didn't travel to other countries as a
small child. (I kid you not, I guess if you
do not have a passport by the age of 2 then
you are a foreign policy failure)
5. She wears read high heels and has a nice

6. She is a nursing mother so she is hormonal
and irrational.

I could go on but these are the ones that stand out.

Isn't that what Nato is all about?
I thought Sarah did well. I really don't know what all the fuss is about. Wasn't that the original intent of NATO? All of it's members standing up and defending the country that is in trouble.

Have we become such wusses that actually hearing someone verbalize what the purpose of NATO is throws us into the vapors. My Lord, look what the '60's "California dreamin" crowd has done to our spines.

I found it very refreshing to find a politician that stands up and say yes, if another NATO member country is in trouble we will do what has to be done to defend them.

That's the problem to begin with. These rouge nations have gotten a free ride and do whatever they please because they know the appeasers won't do a damn thing. They will errr...ahhhh.. well, we better think about this.

If some of these rouge countries knew they could possibly have their as* kicked, they wouldn't pull half of their sh**. Sarah said war would be the last option, but it is on the table. Good for her. Talk softly but carry a big stick.

In addition, I found Gibson to be very condescending. He wasn't looking for news, he was looking to make Sarah look like an idiot.
He accused Sarah of using a "blizzard of words" ..are you kidding me? Look at the dolt the left is supporting. errrr...ahhhh. Obama couldn't answer a question in under 75 words if his life depended on it.

Palin did pretty well. In any event, I don't really care what the MSM says or does anymore, and I don't think most normal people do. The media has proven themselves to be liars and frauds. I don't trust them, and I don't believe ANYTHING they say. They have gone to the lie and misinformation well too many times. The MSM really doesn't amount to a pimple on a donkey's as* anymore.

Sarah Palin was brilliant in this interview. She didn't allow Gibson to slant her responses, and she showed just how smart she is. Can't wait for the big show tomorrow, or is it Saturday? I haven't seen a solid schedule on this yet.

I'm still looking for a bumper sticker that says "I'm voting for the wrinkly white haired dude and the pitbull with lipstick". That "wrinkly white haired dude", will be our next president. What Paris Hilton did with that remark was remind us how much respect we have for our grandfathers, fathers, and uncles. Palin's lipstick joke reminded how much compassion and intelligence we see in our own mothers, sisters, daughters, wives or selves.

Obama's remarks tend to remind us how crooked Chicago politics are, and how out of touch the Ivy League elite are.

Thoughts on the interview
I don't think she hit it out of the park, but she clearly didn't back down and start crying as I am sure that the left wanted/expected from her. Gibson is a pompous a** and his paternalistic approach was obviously the entire weight of the left on his shoulders to be the first attacker to "vet the candidate". I am not sure how that will go over with women, but I was not at all impressed with his performance or tone as he looked down at her over his glasses (can he not get contacts?). Can you imagine him interrupting BHO or windbag Biden during a response and questioning again if that was a Yes during all the words in the response? I am sure it is better to face harshness now as it will be that way in every interview until the election.

My only real concern is that even though her responses were quick and with conviction (and remarkably missing the uhh, ummmm, keep in mind, ahhh, and they must think you are stupid that we have come to expect from BHO), but I am not sure that the campaign did the best job preparing her for this interview during all of her joint appearances with McCain. I think she only flubbed one answer to the Gibson trick question on the Bush Doctrine (that would have fueled his point, and those of all the left, that this is just Bush's third term). I am sure that the opposition expected her to flub every answer.

Kudos, Lady Sarah, you made us proud!
Charles was fair and she was right on! Can't keep a good woman down. She came out swinging and scored, leaving the enemy without ammunition!
But that won't stop the gotcha crowd from firing away; they will prefabricate some verbal abuse power. Go Lady Sarah and Gentleman John.

Whats the point!
Of course we would have to defend a fellow NATO country. That guy at TPM is worthless. Obama would answer the question the exact same way, though of course there would be 20 minutes of blather in the middle to take the edge off.

Palin Got It Right on Energy
I think Palin made it easy to understand...
Our security and economy all demand energy independence. Gibson was shocked to see that Palin put so much importance on energy independence in respect to foreign policy and her knowledge and expertise in this area gives her foreign policy and national security cache.
McCain-Palin Power...New Energy for America!!!

Andrew Sullivan Reports:
Andrew Sullivan reports (you decide):

I just read it. I'm not sure how to respond because I believe the entire last two weeks have been a farce, and ABC News is now an integral, enabling part of that farce. It's also unfair to judge a partial interview, because Gibson has so far asked no questions about her record as governor or mayor, and none of the tough questions that a press conference would ask. Maybe that is to come. So I will reserve judgment until I'm able to watch and read the entire interview. All I have learned thus far is that a McCain administration would be prepared to go to war with Russia over Georgia and will never, ever criticize or oppose any decision made by the government of the state of Israel. And I knew that already.

Sounds like Sarah Palin just batted the series. With a grand slam too.

Oh yeah, according to Excitable Andrew, John McCain is a shameless liar too. Takes one to know one I guess.

Her First Big Test
I am a huge fan of Palin and had hoped McCain would pick her months ago. If I knew about her, why do the media act like they never heard of her? They have a vendetta against McCain more than ever because nothing was leaked by the campaign.
As much of a supporter of Palin as I am, I do think she could have done better. She was not as relaxed as she usually is. Gibson was in attack mode, and I am glad he was. As a result, in her first test, she did better than expected by most.
Although, I think she looked foolish (to the elite...not to Independents though...the ones she is courting), when she didn't know what the Bush Doctrine was...
I loved her answers regarding NATO, Russia, Israel. She explained herself well regarding her speech she gave at her church (but then again, anyone who thinks she is crazy for believing in a higher power (about 15% of this country don't believe but not all would think she is crazy), she would never convince she is not some crazed lover of God.

Palin
Sarah Palin gave a good and honest answer. Leave it to the liberals to find something wrong with that!

I agree with what she said
The left doesn't give a damn about human beings in Georgia, Ukraine, or any other country, including the United States. Their arrogant selfishness has no limits. They murder millions of babies every year, and are proud of it.

They can twist it all they want. Mainstream Americans will agree with Sarah, that "perhaps" we might end up in a war. We don't want it, but we will never take it off the table either.

As Ronald Reagan said, PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH. We MUST be prepared to back up words with deeds, including military action if required. Only then will we be safe.

I hope Obama criticizes her on this. It will make him look extremely weak, weaker than he already looks.

They will be so quick to criticize --
According to this transcript, Gov. Palin did not say she would sit down and play Crazy 8s with Putin! -- How many ums, uhs, and dahs were in there? -- I enthusiastically support her nomination so I may be more than a little biased -- She spoke very well with good vocabulary -- Her responses seemed measured, articulate and clean -- (Oh! -- That`s the other guy!) -- Sarah Palin is the real deal and a tremendous American -- Remember the "Don`t Pillory Hillary" buttons -- I like this one: Sarah Palin kicks A**! --
