In the in-box:
A Plea from Arkansas: Christian Conservatives Need to Take a Closer Look at Mike Huckabee's Record as Governor
by David Thompson
As a conservative, evangelical, politically-active father of four in Arkansas I believe it is imperative for like-minded voters to become more familiar with the Mike Huckabee that just completed 10 years as our governor. I realize it’s sometimes hard to know what to believe during a campaign, so I've tried to include links to published stories, with most coming from years past when the events noted were taking place.
For those who don't know much about me, I attend a very conservative evangelical church in Central Arkansas that includes some other politically active members (past/present elected officials, lobbyists, candidates, etc), and our family currently homeschools our young children. Since 1996, I have been heavily involved in numerous Republican campaigns in Arkansas at all levels (even managing a few). I have also served as vice chairman of the Republican committee in Arkansas' largest county. Yet I don't know of a single person in these circles who is supporting Huckabee for President - although I do know many that are definitely not supporting him. Of course, this is anecdotal evidence, but consider that Huckabee just finished serving 10 years as our governor (and I am sure there are many Republicans in Arkansas who are supporting him - I just don't know them). The truth is, most conservatives in Arkansas had written him off long before his Presidential bid.
That said, here are 7 key reasons I cannot in good conscience support Mike Huckabee as the Republican nominee for President. This is based on his record here and is not a personal attack - I cannot speak for his or anybody's motives. This list is not the result of intense research - it's based on what I know and have experienced first-hand as a politically-active conservative Arkansan. It's a list I could have given you 6 months or even 2 years ago. And I am not attempting to echo or give validity to any criticism he is now receiving nationally (and I don’t think ALL of it is fair). This is the Mike Huckabee we know.
1) Governor Huckabee did lasting damage to the Republican Party and conservative movement in Arkansas.
It's hard to go after Democrats with a conservative message when your Republican Governor is out front releasing violent criminals, providing state benefits to illegals, pushing tax increases, expanding government spending and programs, and constantly walking an ethical tight-rope (more on each of these items to follow). This tied our party's hands - many conservatives got frustrated, apathy set in, and some quit the fight. In addition:
- Huckabee insisted on having "his people" controlling the Republican Party campaign organizations that are set up in Arkansas each election cycle. He also insisted that his guy remain as state party chairman when party leaders planned to make a change. The mismanagement and ineptness that followed was so great that the Republican Party plunged into debt and the Federal Election Commission levied the the largest fine ever against a state political party following an investigation of the 2000 and 2002 election cycles. Obviously, this set back the Republican Party of Arkansas for years.
- When Huckabee started his first full term in 1998, Arkansas had just elected a Republican Governor, Lt. Governor, U.S. Senator, and 2 Republican Congressmen. Upon his leaving office in 2007, Republicans now hold no statewide offices, have no Republicans in the U.S.Senate, and only one Republican Congressman remains.
- It was often said during Huckabee's term that Arkansas had 3 parties: Republican Party, Democrat Party, and the Huckabee Party.
"He destroyed the conservative movement in Arkansas, and left the Republican Party in shambles." - Phyllis Schlafly, president of the national Eagle Forum
"His support for taxes split the Republican Party, and damaged our name brand." – Former Arkansas State Representative Randy Minton (R)
"I think if they knew [his record] it would totally de-energize them . . . his policies are just wrong." – Former Arkansas State Senator Jim Holt’s (R) warning for conservatives around the country who think they have found their candidate in Mike Huckabee.
2) Governor Huckabee's non-stop clemencies continually hindered the work of criminal prosecutors and miffed Republicans. The numbers are staggering - over 1,000 clemencies and commutations of criminals as governor. Most people now are familiar with his push to parole convicted rapist Wayne Dumond, who went on to rape and murder a Missouri woman less than a year after his release. But there are many more troubling facts regarding Huckabee’s pattern of releasing violent criminals. While I cannot speak for Huckabee’s motives, it seems clear that he used poor judgment and was reckless with this executive power.
- Huckabee released more criminals than the combined total of every border state to Arkansas (made up of Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana) - even though the combined population of these states is 16 times higher than Arkansas'. He also issued more than double the clemencies of his three predecessors combined.
- In many cases, Huckabee's actions set loose savage criminals convicted of grisly murders over the passionate objections of prosecutors and victims' families. This American Spectator story details some of these violent cases and explains the resulting difficulties they presented prosecutors working with other victims and their families.
- Huckabee and his appointees ignored the laws on the books, including the requirement to notify victims' families and explain the reasons for those clemencies. He said to fully explain his reasoning would cost millions of dollars and "take money away from education and Medicaid and other things."
- A 2004 investigative article by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette found that prisoners had a better chance of being granted clemency by Huckabee if they had a mutual acquaintance, labored at the governor's mansion under a prisoner work program, or a minister intervened on their behalf. Prosecutors say Huckabee was more inclined to release or reduce the sentences of prisoners if he had direct contact with them or was lobbied by those close to him.
- He often refused to learn the facts of the cases (sometimes not even reading the murderer's own confession), made no attempt to get the police/prosecutor's case files, or even get input from the victims' families before making his decision.
- The clemency granted to one multiple DUI offender was likely tied to large political contributions from the offender's family, including a soft money political organization run by Huckabee's people.
- Good summary article
"Last January, after Mississippi Gov. Ronnie Musgrove, a Democrat, lost his re-election bid, he issued 16 clemencies, and there was a huge outcry. That's how many Huckabee averages per month." – Arkansas Leader, (August 11, 2004)
"He seems to believe that granting clemency to murderers, rapists, drunk drivers and other convicted criminals is a part of the everyday affairs of the governor's office rather than something that he should approach cautiously and selectively." – Robert Herzfeld, Saline County Prosecuting Attorney during Huckabee’s tenure
"I know some of the people that Huckabee let loose have reoffended. Some of them we've caught and some of them we haven't caught......I used to be able to tell the families of victims, in all good faith and candor, that it was a rare event when a governor commuted a sentence and let a murderer back out, or a rapist back out or a child molester back out. But I can't do that anymore." - Larry Jegley, longtime Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney
"I felt like Huckabee had more compassion for the murderers than he ever did for the victims." - Elaine Colclasure, co-leader of the Central Arkansas chapter of Parents of Murdered Children.
3) Governor Huckabee's pattern was to ignore immigration laws, often in the name of Christianity.
- In 2001, Huckabee’s human services liaison Robert Trevino pushed for legislation to provide driver’s licenses for illegals. It was understood by legislators that he acted with Huckabee's blessing.
- In 2001, Huckabee opposed a measure to require proof of citizenship to vote.
- In 2005, Huckabee supported a bill that offered illegal immigrants in-state tuition rates and made them eligible for the same merit-based scholarships to Arkansas state colleges and universities as legal citizens. The bill would have violated federal law and was not enacted by the legislature.
- In 2005, he opposed a bill that denied some state benefits to illegals and required proof of citizenship to vote (patterned after Arizona’s Prop 200 that has been successful in curtailing illegal immigration in that state). In this story, Huckabee called the measure "un-American….inflammatory….race-baiting and demagoguery." He added that the bill "inflames those who are racist and bigots and makes them think there’s a real problem. But there’s not." He then singled out State Senator Jim Holt, also an openly professing Christian, saying, "I drink a different kind of Jesus juice."
- In 2005, Huckabee criticized federal agents for a recent crackdown on illegals, saying that it wasn’t fair to the innocent family members of those targeted in the operation. (No word on whether he also opposes raids on other law-breakers who might also have innocent family members affected by the fruits of their illegal activity.)
- In 2005, Huckabee promoted an "open door" policy on immigration as he addressed the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) national convention in Little Rock. LULAC is a left-leaning group that opposes virtually all measures of immigration enforcement.
"He was an absolute disaster on immigration as governor. Every time there was any enforcement in his state, he took the side of the illegal aliens." - Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, a group that played a major role in rallying the phone calls that helped defeat this year's Senate immigration bill.
"I would hope he could be trusted to secure the borders, but given his track record in Arkansas, I don't see the conservative he has portrayed himself to be in Iowa." - Jake Files, a former Arkansas state representative and current chairman of the Sebastian County Republican Party
4) Governor Huckabee was no friend to fiscal conservatives in Arkansas.
Huckabee’s record on taxes, government spending, and growing government programs was miserable. Basically, when the economy got tough, Huckabee expected families like mine to tighten our budgets in order to help state government meet its spending whims.
- In 2003, Huckabee called a special session of the legislature to push for a tax increase to make up for spending shortfalls. This led to his signing HB1039, an across the board income tax and tobacco tax increase. Huckabee even refused to consider a Republican proposal to cut spending and use general improvement funds (i.e., legislative pork) to make up for the budget shortfall. Ironically, the same day Huckabee was practically begging the Arkansas legislature to raise taxes (here’s the video), President Bush was also in Little Rock to push for his tax cut plan. (Note: When asked about this video recently, Huckabee gave a misleading response to Fox News, blaming his tax increase plea on a court order. This prompted State Representative Johnny Key, the current Republican Leader in the Arkansas House, to send out a letter correcting the accuracy of Huckabee's statement.)
- If that weren't enough, Huckabee called a 2nd special legislative session in 2003 to pass a nearly one-cent state sales tax increase. The measure also expanded the sales tax to include previously exempted services (for more information and context, see reason #6 below).
- During Huckabee’s term, Arkansas showed a net tax increase of $505 million, and the average Arkansan’s tax burden grew from $1,969 to $2,902. Governor Huckabee raised more taxes in 10 years in office than Bill Clinton did in his 12 years.
- During Huckabee’s 10 years as governor, state spending more than doubled (from $6.6 billion to $16.1 billion), higher education and public schools got big increases, as did social services. Meanwhile, the state added about 8,000 full-time workers to its payroll during that period, a 19% increase (according to the Bureau of Legislative Research).
- The conservative Cato Institute gave Huckabee an "F" for his final term as governor on its Fiscal Policy Report Card, saying, "Huckabee’s leadership has left taxpayers in Arkansas much worse off." His grade was lower than 15 of the 21 Democrat Governors. His overall grade as governor was a D.
"The main reason for the drop was his insistence on raising taxes at almost every turn throughout his final term." – Cato Institute explaining why Huckabee had dropped from a "D" to an "F" on their Fiscal Policy Report Card.
"[Huckabee] says he’s pro-family. If you’re raising taxes on the families of Arkansas, causing wives to go out and get jobs to make ends meet, that’s not pro-family." - Former Arkansas State Representative Randy Minton (R)
"In the past, he blamed Democrats for raising taxes...We voted for them, but he proposed them." - Arkansas State Senator John Paul Capps, a Democrat
5) Huckabee left a long trail of ethics questions while Governor of Arkansas
This is an area where I think Huckabee does receive some unfair criticism. Some of the ethics charges against him were frivolous and politically motivated. However, it has been concerning for some time just how much the governor accepted in gifts and how he was seemingly always pushing ethical limits.
- During his tenure, Huckabee accepted 314 gifts valued overall at more than $150,000, according to documents filed with the Arkansas' Secretary of State office.
- The Huckabees set up wedding registries at local department stores as Mike was leaving office – even though they had been married for 30 years. State ethics laws prohibited Huckabee from receiving gifts of more than $100……but there was an exception for wedding gifts.
- Judicial Watch, a non-partisan group dedicted to fighting government corruption, listed Huckabee among their Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians of 2007. Huckabee was one of only three Republican politicians to make the list.
6) Huckabee's education record shows him to be an advocate of the "status quo"
The New Hampshire chapter of the National Education Association (NEA) has endorsed Hillary Clinton and Mike Huckabee for the upcoming Primary elections. This is the first time in memory that they have recommended a Republican (in 2004 they endorsed Howard Dean). They likely chose Huckabee because:
- Huckabee has consistently opposed virtually all proposals for education reform, including school choice vouchers.
- The former president of Eagle Forum of Arkansas said Huckabee "continued the Hillary Clinton education plan" as our governor.
- When the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled that Arkansas’ public school funding was "inequitable," Huckabee took the ruling as a mandate to raise taxes in order to once again increase school funding...which he did. (To his credit, however, he also used the opportunity to consolidate some of the school districts in the state - although rural legislators severely watered down the proposal.)
7) Huckabee has very little support for his Presidential bid here in Arkansas
For the most part those in his party who know him best are not supporting him.
- In October, a University of Arkansas poll showed that, among all Presidential candidates in both parties, only 8% of Arkansans said they were supporting Mike Huckabee.
- That same week, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported that only one-third of Republicans in the Arkansas Legislature said they were supporting their former governor's Presidential bid.
- After this story, the Huckabee campaign published a list of supporters in his home state. The Arkansas News Bureau then reported that as some of the names on Huckabee's Arkansas endorsement list were used without permission and had to be removed.
- This is purely anecdotal, but despite my involvement in Republican politics, I am unaware of any of my Republican friends who are supporting Huckabee. I have seen maybe 3 Huckabee for President bumper stickers – and I live in Republican west Little Rock and work 2 miles from the state capitol where Huckabee just completed over 10 years as Governor (my wife says she saw her first sticker today…..guess he's picking up steam here!).
"...if Huckabee didn't have things sewn up with Republicans back home, what kind of message did that send?....The truth is that Huckabee hasn't had that much support from former and current Republican legislators." - David Sanders, conservative columnist for Arkansas News Bureau (November 11, 2007)
Conclusion:
I realize the Republican Presidential field does not leave true conservatives with much to get excited about. However, it is unlikely I will support Huckabee over any of the Republican frontrunners because of his liberal record, his questionable judgment, and his reckless use of power while Governor. Now is not the time for Republicans to compromise on core conservative values. More importantly, we need a leader with a history of using strong judgment as our nation continues to lead the world in the War on Terror.
Two final questions:
1) Given the many vulnerabilities in his record, what is the likelihood that Huckabee would win in a general election? Democrat National Committee officials have already been quoted as saying that they see Huckabee as "easy kill" and refer to him as "the glass jaw -- and they're just waiting to break it." The DNC has issued over 200 attack press releases on Republican candidates - only 4 on Huckabee, the last one coming 10 months ago.
2) Does his record as governor represent someone who should be given greater power and responsibility? Is he Commander and Chief material? Leader of the free world? National Review recently expressed concern, and Huckabee raised eyebrows with recent comments critical of U.S. Foreign policy and our role in the world - he was essentially repeating the Democrat talking points!
Feel free to pass this letter on or contact me if you have any questions about anything stated here. I have tried very carefully to be fair, accurate, and to stick to facts from Huckabee's record. But it's certainly possible I made a mistake somewhere or worded something poorly. I would be more than happy to further dialogue on any of these issues.
Sincerely,
David Thompson
Little Rock, Arkansas This is a powerful letter, which Team Huckabee is hoping doesn't go viral.

They have their attack poodle regurgitating non-stop talking points against Governor Huckabee. But I could have sworn that our host has been proclaiming for weeks that the Huckaboom went bust. For weeks we have been reading about how every Huckabee misstep foretold the end of his surge. So why are you continuing to regurgitate these Huckabee talking points? Unless..... |
|
So the #1 reason this evangelical is not supporting Huck is because of the damage he has done to the Republican party?
Of course, this evangelical is also a self-described GOP activist in the state..
One wonders whether there is a confusion among the kingdoms here... |
|
...and so, Hugh, do you support Bush and his federal take over of education? You are acting just like a liberal rag magazine or the Clintons and their anecdotal witnessess. For crying out loud, you and RUsh and all of my favorite conservatives are driving me crazy with this constant attacking of the Huck!! How did Huck manage to get re-elected in Arkansas with so many evangelicals opposed to him? As an evangelical, I like what I see, I love the Huck's website - it is very conservative and under immigration the first thing he emphasizes is the building of the FENCE!! That's more than C+ Bush has ever done!! (Although, I love the Bush Supreme Court):) As I have stated elsewhere, dailykos folks believe that the HUck will be the most difficult candidate to beat on our side, but that he would never win the primary battles. If anyone listened to Rush today, then you heard many evangelicals calling to express their support for the HUck!! Rush was beside himself. I do not understand what is going on with the conservative media today, but they are really doing a disservice to the movement by attacking Huck and violating Reagan's 11th Commandment!! Rush is starting to sound like a NOrtheast Republican - and Hugh, you are too. I am saddened by my conservative brothers. |
|
As you may have realized following Huckabee the last month or so, he isn't long on knowing the facts. From never hearing about the NIE report to not knowing where Pakistan is on a map, Huck has shown his disdain for basic knowledge.
As you may have heard, Huckabee will be going on the Jay Leno Show tonight. In doing so, he WILL be crossing the Writer's Strike Picket Lines.
Whereas David Letterman has a special agreement with the unions, Jay Leno has no such agreement. One of the reasons Jay is having Huckabee on is that he is having a hard time getting any real celebrities to cross the lines.
So, today, when asked why he was crossing the picket lines today, Huckabee responded by saying that he understood the late night programs had a special agreement with writers and he would not be crossing the lines.
Oops. That's Letterman Huck, not Leno. Lord what an idiot! |
|
I have learned to trust them. Dem's have learned to hate them. Why? Because they have rarely been wrong. When they say beware of Huckabee, I am heeding the warning. Watch what the media is saying and believe the opposite. If you hate Hugh, if you hate Rush, I don't think you have conservative principles in your heart. I don't always agree with both of them, but the level of hate I see spewed about them both, tells me there is another motive. |
|
|
Huckabee the scab. Hilarious. |
|
Hmmmm, let's see....a hypocritical evangelical pastor/entertainer (Huckabee) vs. an experienced, supremely intelligent presidential candidate (Romney). As a nation, we are voting to represent and run the most powerful country in the world. The future of America and the direction it is headed is an extremely important and serious matter. I want the best, most qualified person leading us, not a clownish amateur that doesn't have a clue. I can see why all the respected, true conservative talk show hosts, journalists, bloggers, etc. have come down so hard on Mike Huckabee and John McCain (have you read the list--including Rush Limbaugh's latest statements today) on Iowansforromney.com?). Huckabee's latest wacko mis-statements and publicity stunt fiasco on Monday just reiterates why I'm voting for competence. McCain's just plain mean and is way too liberal. Go Mitt!

hugh is not changing minds, but he sure is driving people away. you're your own worst enemy, hugh. |
|
He said that he would vote for any of the other frontrunners before Huckabee. I have a problem with an evangelical saying that he'd vote for Rudy before Huckabee. I'm a three-legged stool conservative but the social conservative leg is about twice as long as the rest. I have 0% confidence in Rudy on the life issue. I'm 99% sure with Romney and 100% sure with Huckabee on that issue. If I'm not confident of your stand for the unborn re. judges, there's no way you'll get my vote for president in a Republican primary.
I'll be voting Romney but definitely would select Huckabee before Guliani. |

I saw the title of this article in the sidebar menu of the column I was reading, I knew it was going to be yet another Hugh Hewitt pro-Romney/anti-Huckabee hit piece.
Mitthall.com has become a joke. |

Dennis Prager and Medved,
Please do a logic and fact intervention for your coworker Hugh Hewitt. He has gone over the edge, please retrieve whatever shred of dignity of his you can find and break the magic spell he is obviously under....

P.S. I really miss the intellectual discussion that used to be the Hugh Hewitt Show. |

David Thompson, delivers a flurry of jabs inside followed by solid right cross and devistating upper cut to the Good Reverend's glass jaw.... |

Why does no one listen to people like this guy?
People base their support for Huck on the most shameful of reasons:
1 - He's funny. Well hell, let's elect Chris Rock for president then. Didn't he make a movie about that? Rock for President!
2 - He's an evangelical. As so many have pointed out, we're electing a president, not a pastor. And if we were electing a pastor, I wouldn't vote for Huck. A preacher who left the clergy to become a politician and accept millions in unreported gifts, released over 1000 violent criminals, including 12 murderers, and has been listed as one of the top ten most corrupt politicians of the year? You want THAT as your pastor?
3 - He's the underdog. I get it - so many americans love the underdog. I know I do. But we're voting for a PRESIDENT, people. A PRESIDENT! If you want underdogs, cheer for Ohio State on Monday.
Please examine your support for Huck, and ask yourself "Exactly why would I vote for this man? Is is because he's really got a shot in the general? Is it because he'd make a good president? Or is it because I just like the guy and/or he reminds me of my pastor?" Once you've honestly answered those questions, please make an intelligent choice. |

Wow! I feel sorry for you. I thought the Dittohead thing was just a myth. If you haven't yet figured out Rush has become nothing more than an RNC mouthpiece, you are in for a long life of being fooled. If you enjoy being ruled by Ivy League trust fund baby globalist plutocrats, vote for Mitt. He'll make sure he and his Wall Street cronies (and uber-wealthy Rush) continue to expand their wealth...while the average American continues to suffer as the price of basics like food, fuel and health care continue to sky-rocket. Oh, I know that's not a concern for Rush, Mitt and the gang...but it's an everyday reality for most of us. |
|
Is there something in the water in Arkansas? Both hillary and bill registered so that they could get wedding gifts. I find it so tacky and so trailor trash (oops sorry to the good people who live in trailors, but that is what billy clinton's friend's carville calls them) . But maybe coming from the north (OK, so I don't live there now) we didn't stoop to such things. I would be very dissappointed if classy Laura Bush would ever do that. I'm sorry, but the more I hear about huck the less I like him. I was leaning his way at first - not any more. Letting all those people out of prison without a complete review of the facts scares me. OKing motor voter only gives illegals the chance to vote. I thought only democrats wanted to do that. And by the way, VOR, I don't have to read your entries any more. I just skip through them. |
|
First off nearly all the cannidates have much worse problems than this. This is nothing.
As I have stated before, Mike Huckabee is a better fiscal conservative than others like Romney, even though this is what Mike Huckabee is critcized the most for. Just look at how much Romney spent. We see it every election. Some republican who is supposed to be a great fiscal conservative blowing millions and millions of dollars to get elected.
But the most important point that most of you guys smearing Mike Huckabee just do not get is that we are social conservatives. This is more than just issues to us, these are deeply rooted convictions.
So you think we should abandon the noble social conservative causes because you think that Mike Huckabee did not advance your self-serving interests?
Think again.
Vote for a true social conservative. Vote for Mike Huckabee. |
|
My sister was talking to her best friend, who is a self-described evangelical christian. When my sis brought up Huckabee as a presidential nominee, her evangelical friend asked "who???" When she explained who Huckabee was, her friend said "A baptist minister? That just means that he's a good businessman." I found that profoundly telling... |
|
The more Gov. Huckabee gets exposed, the more Gov. Romney looks Presidential! Huckabee's tacticts, sleeze, all are so Clinton-style. Huckabee is not a Christian conservative, is not a social conservative, he has no national- security credentials. Hugh, thanks for posting all these imformative articles. Voters should be well informed and use good judgement. Ideology matters, however, questioning, clarity, performance of our candidates', their character, ultimately a whole varaiety of issues, will help us without namecalling, negativeness put the right conservative that is good for the country in the White House. |
|
As an evangelical who has trashed Mike Huckabee, which candidate would you recommend? |
|
|
Apparently, Huck didn't know he was cossing a picket line when he decided to go do Jay Leno. Regardless of where one comes down on the writers strike, you would think a Presidential candidate would know he was crossing a picket line nad be prepared to address the issue of need be. This guy is really not ready for prime time. |
|
VoiceOfReason writes: "regurgitating non-stop talking points against Governor Huckabee."
Voice, no newed to regurgitate, Huckabee provides new material very day and sometimes hourly. Early in December it was the Holiday Inn Express, then the Pakistanis swarming our borders, today it was not knowing that Leno has not settled with the Writer's guild and he would become a scab tonight on Leno's show.
|
|
|
Exposed, not trashed. Huckabee's record cannot stand the harsh light of scrutiny. That's why all he can really do about it is whine. |
|
I live in the west central part of Arkansas, and I am a former supporter of Huckabee. The key word here is - former. To my disgust, Huckabee became more and more what I didn't like in a politician. I'm not totally in agreement with the article however, I am from a small town that almost lost it's school because of Mike Huckabee's desire to have a claim to educational reform to run for president on. Thankfully we fought hard along with thousands of other small town people to save our communities and won. I do agree that Huckabee was horrible on crime and immigration. He received a lot of financial support from Tyson Corporation, which has its world headquarters in Northwest Arkansas. They wanted lots of illegals to work in their plants. In the last several years the influx of illegal aliens to Arkansas has been astounding. Just go shopping in Springdale or Fayetteville, Arkansas and you'll see what I mean. This was made possible by the support of Huckabee. He has a lot to answer for here. PLEASE PROTECT THE U.S FROM THIS NON-CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE. DON'T VOTE FOR HIM. |
|
I have discussed the campaign with many friends and co-workers here in Arkansas. None of them are supporting Huckabee. He is universally disliked and deemed untrustworthy by the Arkansas residents I know, and most of them are Evangelical Christians- Baptists and Assembly of God.
When he first announced he was running for President we all thought it was a big joke. We thought that surely no one would fall for his line again with the record he had here in Arkansas. It has been like a nightmare to see so many people fooled into thinking they would be getting a conservative Christian, and jump on his bandwagon. Watching him campaign and joke and give his oneliners has helped me remember how we got suckered in by him in Arkansas. Go ahead an vote for him if you believe him, but if he is elected, you will soon join our growing band of badly disappointed former Huckabee supporters. Just don't say you weren't warned. |
|
The modern day Snake-Oil salesman.
I will not attack Huck's religion, but I will attack almost everything else about him. Without writing pages on why, there is one outstanding reason why I ask you to NOT vote for Huckabee. He is a RINO! If you still beleive in the GOP, please do not vote for anymore RINO's. |
|
We've missed you like crazy, Babycakes!! Welcome back and Happy New Year!! |

Put on your to do list for 08', Head examined followed by eye exam ASAP |

Marystella:
Who are you concerned is calling names? This article seems to bend over backward to discuss the facts without name calling. |
|
But it is money he earned, not importuned like Huck. From what I have read Mitt is pretty good at saving ailing businesses and state governments and returning them to prosperity.
By most accounts Huck is pretty good at lining his pockets under the table from willing businesses looking for government favors (Tyson Chicken, RJ Reynolds).
I'll take the income builder any day over the shameless beggaring of a Huckster.
|
|
Are you currently involved in a campaign for somebody?
Also, do you really think Huck is the Most danger to Christians in the U.S. out of all of the GOP candidates?
As a Christian, don't forget who MUST be first! If you promote a pro-abortion or anti-Christian rights candidate, or even help cause one to get in by tearing down the Christians, no matter how flawed.

David is exactly right. I would not vote for Guiliani over Huckabee but I would vote for everybody else in the Republican Field.
I go to Fellowship Bible Church ( a very conservative fundamentalist chruch). I am a Republican because of the pro-life issue and I do appreciate Huckabee's stance on that issue.
However, every other issue he is SOOOOOO wrong on. But the thing that turned me against Huckabee was his ethics (or lack thereof). He uses Christianity as a shield against anyone examining him. He is so good at giving speeches and draping himself in Christ that no one could ever believe that he is corrupt.
After 7 years of being "disapointed" I finally gave up on him. Sure enough, it took a while, but his true colors are beginning to show at the national level as well.
Christians, God calls us to use discernment. I didn't when I first met him, so I can't expect y'all to, but I am begging you to not just blindly follow somebody because they name drop God all the time.
We don't have great choices this year but we do have very pro-life, very conservative, and ethical candidates to support. I don't care which one you support - just don't support Mike Huckabee. You WILL regret it. |
|
A man with honesty, integrity, character and values. Mitt Romney! If you can't see the dishonesty and disingenuousness of Huck, I feel sorry for you. I am sure he tries to be a good Christian but he is not doing a very good job of it lately. Have you done your homework? Huckabee is one of the "Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians” for 2007 according to Judicial Watch. Take a look if you want to know the truth: http://www.judicialwatch.org/judicial-watch-announces-list -washington-s-ten-most-wanted-corrupt-politicians-2007
Don't be blinded warned Christ in the parable, "And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? Luke 6:39

Ice Princess, Mitt Romney is not my first choice and i won't get into the game of who would be a better candidate against whom. I just know that Mike Huckabee is not ethical and the truth will come out (probably about October of this year).
It doesn't matter if the truth never came out. God will not bless a campaign that uses his name to obtain power and hide ethical lapses. That is a harsh indictment and I don't say it lightly.
I know this is hard for you to believe when you see him speak and he gives you such warm feelings that you just uncontrollably giggle, and I know that my rantings will be dismissed as "dirty tricks" by someone with an agenda, However, I will at least be able to say that I did my small part to warn people about him and did not sit idly by while God's name and my faith were used as a political tool. |
|
As a Christian Conservative (NOTE, which one comes first) I am not in love or like with ANY of the GOP candidates. However, I am being cautious not to turn anybody off from voting in the Generals, because they HATE who wins in the primaries.
The only exception to that is Giuliani, who was and is a SOCIAL Liberal. If he wins it will be a choice between two Democrats and I will pick him for national security issues. However, he wants to downsize the gov't by 40%, which sounds good. However, it always starts with the little guy and the military, including defense budgets.
I see so many people jumping on the I hate McCain, Huck, and Romney bandwagons and verbally slaughtering them, that my greatest fear is that Republicans are going to think there is no need to vote. It's happened before in lower level elections.
Honestly, I think it will take somebody who can take the fencesitters to beat Hillary. I think McCain could take them, despite an imperfect record. What I'm not certain of is: Has the right hurt him too bad to get their vote? I'm scared that with all of this negativity Satan herself will win the Generals. |
|
David, thanks for your warnings about Huckabee. I appreciate the way you presented your observations without any name-calling. Two things really disturb me about Huckabee...
First, those who know him best and longest -- Arkansas Republicans like you -- are least likely to support him. As you pointed out, Arkansas was a solid red state when Huckabee first became governor. Now, Arkansas is the only blue state in the South! No Democrat could have done as much damage to the Arkansas GOP as Huckabee did during his governorship.
Second, Huckabee uses his professed faith as a political shield, with the clear insinuation that anyone who disagrees with him is less faithful (or "drinks a different Jesus Juice") than Huckabee. Instead of applying his faith to open dialogue, he uses is to squelch open conversation -- and that is shameful. |
|
I am also from ARkansas and an evangelical Christian. I knocked on hundred of doors and made hundreds of calls for Mike H back in 92 and 93. I worked harder for Mike than I have anyone else.
I have never been so disappointed in my life. This guy is a pro-life and pro-gun (which I am grateful for). But he is liberal on everything else and unethical.
I couldn't have said it better David. Thanks. |
|
I think McCain is the man for our times. I also hope that the right will not punish him for not being in lockstep on every possible litmus test.
His only serious mistep in my opinion was on comprehensive immigration reform. He has publicly stated that he has "heard the people" and understands that they will not trust the government to reform immigration policy until they show they are serious about enforcing the border and existing laws.
The reason I think they're saying that Huck can't beat Hillary is that there's not enough difference between them on issues that most attract independent voters. Their main differences are social issues which mostly attracts the "religious right" (I hate that phrase but don't know what else to use) but alienates many independent voters, thereby swinging the election to Hillary (or whoever the Democrat is.)
This is another edge for McCain. I have come to the realization over time and cosideration that I like him more than the other Republicans on balance anyway, but I also think he is the most electable up against any of the Democrats. National polls, for whatever they're worth, support this notion. |
|
|
Surely you realize what a debacle McCain-Feingold has been. Outside no child left behind, one of the worst pieces of legislation ever. |

Something from Other well known Christians that I think you should read
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=59 509
This list includes most of the pro family leaders in America and they do not agree with you.
Romney is not what he appears to be, the king has no clothes and we need to all wake up to that before it is too late.
As to the Romney and Fred team, My Jewish friends say it best OY VEY!!!!
|
|
Guys,
Let's get real... Fred is the only true Conservative in this race. He is also the most electable. If he does well in Iowa, nothing will stop him. I am a ministry leader in my Baptist church in Washington State, and will NEVER vote for Huckabee. But I can't trust Romney so that leaves one person.....
Vote Christian: Vote Fred

I find it amusing that when the huckabee followers get pressed like their "leader" they break out into name calling and populist demagogueing! You Huckabee fans ALL rip on Mitt's earned income and cry saying "we don't have any so why should he have all the money for advertising?" Puuuuuhlease!!!! You attack Rush, Coulter, National Review, George Will, Charles Krauthammer, etc ALL of these guys we all know are conservatives and always have been. I know 6 months ago before Huckabee picked up steam AND BEFORE the spotlight was on him you would have agreed with the rest of us on this blog that the aforementioned hosts, writers, etc are on our side and conservative. However, now that Gov Hhuckabee's record is being looked at and examined, HE doesn't like it and YOU don't like it and you have resorted to name calling! Is that the best you got? Seriously, we all laugh because we all still respect those writers and commentators and KNOW they are still conservative and correct with their assessment of your candidate. The reason why Huckabee was in a highly democratic state is because read between the lines of the article everyone left him that had an (R) after his name. |
|
|
that are here are dems hoping to influence the right side of this process. No conservative would support a con artist like Huck. |
|
You are way off - I have never voted for a Dem in my 20 years of voting!! I just do not like all of the piling on by the conservative media. In my view, the elite conservative media do not like the humble background of the Huck and its religious foundation. I love Rush and Ann, but they are both clearly favoring the rich and wealthy Republican candidates. Look to the Huck's website - it is full of conservative ideas and policies.
On his show yesterdayk, Rush stated emphatically that the Huck was not a conservative - obviously, the Rush has not really scrutinized the Huck. The Rush simply does not want a conservative, southern born-again Christian, winning the Rep. primaries. |
|
Are you blind? Do you have cognitive reasoning impairment? With all of the information regarding Huck and his proclivities right in front of your face you still support that jackass?
Never voted for a dem, huh? You sound like one of those seminar callers who call into Rush with "I've been a staunch republican all my life. But what Bush is doing to this nation, I am rethinking my vote and might have to vote democrat for the first time." Whatever. |
|
Even though I am an evangelical Christian, I am extremely frustrated with Christians who support Huckabee as they are doing so only because of his faith and not based on his ability to not only be elected President but to be an effective and powerful President. He lacks the ability for both.
I am thankful that you posted this letter, Hugh, and I hope that Christians will heed your warning! |
|
|
Huck & his supporters can't let Huck's record be discussed, their reaction tells us all we need to know about the HUCK. The truth is Arkansas was a solid red state when Huckabee first became governor...and after his 10 years in that position, Arkansas is now the ONLY BLUE STATE in the South! Jimmah C. must be jealous of the Huck! |
|
UofKTF: Do you really want a President simply because he is claims to be a conservative, southern born-again Christian? Did Jimmy Carter look good to you? Don't be a tunnel visioned voter, UofKTF. Maybe claims like this are sincere, or maybe some politicians just know how to push the right emotional buttons....who knows? But look at all the issues and think before you support someone who tells you what you want to hear. David Thompson's post has presented a record for us to consider and not just campaign promises. Thank you, David. |
|
Ken says "Look to the Huck's website - it is full of conservative ideas and policies."
Look at his record -- it is full of liberal ideas and policies. When words and deeds conflict, I look more carefully at deeds.
|
|
A Marine, it was Uofsomething that wrote that. No harm, no foul.
Anyone who would base their vote on a candidate's website is a fool or a democrat. But I repeat myself. |
|
|
And gratitude for your forgiveness. I failed to note UofKTF was writing to you... |

First - websites provide much more detail than 20 second soundbites. So, I do believe there is sustantive content to be evaluated there. Second - why is it ok for Romney to change his views, but not the HUck? Did you hear the Rush today - he was practicalyy apologizng for the flip-flops committed by the MItt (his campaign rhetoric does not match his governing actions). Why do we have to give Mitt the benefit of a doubt when he served as governor in one of the most, if not the most, liberll states in the union? How does a conservative get elected to the executive office in Mass? I'm sorry, folks, I just do not buy the idea that the MItt is a conservative. The folks in Mass know something that we do not. Ken - never, ever, ever, have I voted for a DEM! And, I am not now even thinking about it. I will support the eventual nominee on the Rep side. I was unhappy with the way the Reps and coservative media forced us to accept the W in 2000 - the rich clubhouse Republican. (I did not care for mc either). And now, rather than offering a true analysis of the candidates, the conservative media are doing what they did to us in 2000: forcing the crown prince, Mitt, on all of us and deeming all other candidates as unworthy. It's funny how we never heard the conservative media ever attack the HUck while he was governor, but now, all of the sudden hee is the great Satan. I just believe that we are being forced to accept the Rep by the conservative elite and that if we disagree with the chosen, then we are accused of being fools or Christian zealots etc. I do think that W has harmed our party - he has pulled us subtantially to the left with his takeover of education and outlandish spending budgets. Can you imagine what the Dems will do with education now that W has taken it away from the states?? As alwasy, end on a positive - I love the Bush Supreme Court!!!!:) |
|
As a conservative, how can you support Huckabee? Bush's weakness are immigration and big gov't spending, and Huck's record is left of Bush on those issues. Meanwhile, Huck's out there using Democrat talking points on Foreign Policy issues.
Also, I think this letter was designed to combat the 20 second sound bytes with substance. Here's a link to a republish of the letter with active links citing examples of this writer's points: http://reasonandrevelation.blogspot.com/2008/01/evans-not-h earting-huckabee.html
And I'm with Always A Marine: When words and deeds conflict, I look more carefully at deeds. Didn't we have a President in the 90's that wanted us to listen to his words and ignore his deeds?

The writer off that letter should be ashamed of himself for using his "evangelical credentials" to get it posted. And Hugh - who rails against any "religious test" - should be ashamed of his obvious attempt to use it to blunt evangelical's support for Huckabee. Hugh, this is a despicable stunt, beneath you.
"Steve in Corona" got it right above. There is too much confusing the cause of Christ with the secular money concerns of the Republican Party. As an evangelical myself (Calvary Chapels, Southern Baptist), I have a hard time reading rich Republican/Rush Limbaugh capitalist rhetoric in the Gospels, and I really have a hard time seeing Jesus lead the fight for a "fence on the border".
Too many evangelicals use their personal convictions for political satisfaction. It is a shame when such a person agrees more with - and quotes more of - Rush Limbaugh than they do of Jesus Christ.
Obviously that is true of the letter writer to Hugh. Criticize Huckabee all you want ( and there is plenty to criticize) I suggest that he keep his concerns about Huckabee in the issues arena, and avoid hiding behind his religion to make his point. The zealots who followed Jesus left Him when their political hopes were not fulfilled (the overthrow of Roman rule). Be careful where your heart lies, David Thompson. Be careful, Hugh. Your letter is a disservice to the cause of Christ.

Earlier today I was watching one of the cable news channels (I'm 90% sure it was Fox) and they had a short segment where they visited a few campaign offices that were located in the same building in Iowa. They would show people manning the phones in each of the headquarters. When they got to Huckabees headquarters and showed people working the phones, I recognized 2 of the young women on the phone bank. I recognized these two from a documentary I watched recently about Fred Phelps and his weird church. You know, that's the church that would go to Military funerals and protest calling our soldiers evil. Anyway, the 2 women are his daughters! This is not good if Huckabee realy considers himself a Christian, because Fred Phelps and his crew are definately NOT Christian! |

As a former supporter of Mike Huckabee who served on his transition team, as a Christian conservative, and as a retired public school teacher and political activist in Arkansas, I can and do confirm the truth of this excellent open letter portraying the real Mike Huckabee by David Thompson.
I have posted two articles on the website I keep, http://www.wpaag.org, that I wish everyone would read.
Arkansas Editorial Says Mike Huckabee Is Closest of all Candidates to Hillary http://www.wpaag.org/Huckabee%20-%20closest%20to%20Hillary %20of%20all%20candidates.htm Huckabee's pro illegal alien agenda unbelievable! http://www.wpaag.org/Huckabee%20pro%20illegal%20alien%20age nda%20-%20unbelievable.htm.
Huckabee was able to implement Hillary's educational plan in Arkansas far more completely and rapidly than Hillary could have ever done because he was a Republican. People were just not on the lookout for such control under a Republican.
In fact under Huckabee's reign, Arkansas has advanced in government control in education faster than any other state in the nation.
• Test Scores on nationally normed tests are 11 Percentile Points lower in 2006 than in 1990 (a 22% decrease) • College Remediation Rate is 51.6% (46.6% in 1995); National Average is 33% • Only Nine States Scored Lower Than Arkansas in 8th Grade Math on NAEP Test • Only 28% of AR students pass test on AP courses, while 59.4% pass nationwide • Fordham Foundation Gives Arkansas an F on Standards • The National Report Card on Higher Ed. Gave Arkansas a D+ In High School Preparation for College. They graded states in six areas. Arkansas received a D+, a F, three C's and one incomplete. (That averages out a D) • Educational Reforms Have Cost $1.4 BILLION which equals a 3% sales tax in Arkansas. • AFTER TEN YEARS OF HUCKABEE EDUCATION REFORMS, THE GRADUATION RATE DROPPED OVER 10% IN SCHOOL YEAR 2005-2006

Why the hell did you wait to come out with this until after Huckabee hurt Ron Paul in Iowa-- Schmuckabee aint going nowere as people learn about him he will fad -- you could have helped this process a few days ago Thanks for nothing |

Romney and a shield against anyone else who would point out his liberal record.
There is a reason Huck was polling at less than 5% when he was running on his record. As other posters have pointed out, Huck has a very liberal record on immigration, taxes and national security. Huck's decision to carry the cross had less to do with courage than it did with political exploitation.
In an odd turn of events, Huck's campaign has made it unChristian to vote for any of the other Christian candidates. If he has such an ability to alienate other Christians, what chance does he have of reaching beyond his current base. |

What the social conservatives that are voting for Huckabee need to realize that he is not the only social conservative running for President.
Fred Thompson is also a social conservative plus a fiscal conserative and national security is of utmost importance to him.
Regarding social issues: He is a Christian who is pro-life and believes marriage is between a man and a woman.
He has a 100% pro-life Senate voting record. He believes that Roe vs. Wade is bad law and should be overturned.
He has been endorsed by the National Right to Life Committee, South Carolina Citizens for Life & numerous state Right to Life associations.
He believes that our rights do not come from the federal government, but from God.
Regarding Illegal Immigration: He believes the 12 + million illegal immigrants currently in the United States should not be given amnesty.
He believes in securing our borders and enforcing immigration laws.
He believes that it is unfair to let those who violate our laws cut in line in front of those who play by the rules.
He has prepared a detailed Immigration Plan in which he proposes to penalize businesses who hire illegal immigrants.
He has proposed eliminating “sanctuary cities” and denying those cities Federal Funding until they agree to uphold the law.
Visit http://www.fred08.com for more information regarding the only consistent conservative running in the this election.

I'm sorry, but I would have to have more proof on these allegations such as court docs. I never believe anyone in the media.
My vote for Huckabee has nothing to do with Huckabee and everything to do with the FAIR TAX.
I'll continued searching for the TRUTH.

I am realizing this article. This article is totally based on politics. Mike is really a good person, so he can rule for 10 years. But now all of them are talk about Huckabee. He is a good choice after him. I am reviewing this topic and he is the correct person.
