Is Huckabee Already Preparing for Another Prez Run?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:15 PM

As you may have heard, Mike Huckabee has launched HuckPac.

Many of us hoped Huckabee would use the platform and publicity he garnered during his presidential run to start a national organization focused on social issues (something to fill the void left by the Christian Coalition).  Instead, it appears Huckabee has decided to focus on creating a vehicle to fuel a future run for office.  (Who knows, maybe an organization will follow?)

... Obviously, PAC's are the ideal political arm for politicians who want to disperse money to other politicians, and earn favors.  Had Huckabee started a 501 (c)(3) organization, for example, it would not be allowed to make political contributions -- though it might have done some terrific work on behalf of the conservative movement.

Also of note, Huckabee chose April 15 to launch the PAC -- and most of the verbiage associated with the site stresses his Fair Tax position over social issues.  For example his site says,
Huck PAC will support Republican candidates who are passionate advocates for tax reform, a strong national defense, real border security, life, the family, less government and individual liberty.

(Emphasis mine.)

This leads me to believe Huckabee's primary goal for the immediate future is to counter the argument (advanced most effectively by the Club for Growth) that he is a fiscal liberal.

This -- coupled with the fact that several of Huckabee supporters recently attempted to stop Mitt Romney (his most likely opponent for a future presidential run) from becoming VP -- I think we will definitely see Mike Huckabee running for president again.

A lot of conservatives would prefer he run for U.S. Senate.  But I think we're going to eventually see Romney vs. Huck.  It might be in '12 or it might be in '16 -- but these are two trains headed right at each other ...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Huck rates first in one poll - he is the one person that NO ONE wants as veep/president/dog catcher.

Huck, just go away. Stay out of politics. We don't want you here. Please. Have some dignity.

I just hope McCain picks a Veep...
who is young enough to carry the party standard for years to come. I would love Romney, but agree with Qweenmum - just don't pick Huck. There are plenty of young, strong conservatives that would be able to lead the party for years. If things go well, they could be there for the next 16 years.

I think Huck and Romney are basically done. 2016 will be a completely different landscape and who knows who we will nominate; although I will already throw out Bobby Jindal's name as a dark horse.

support him for the future. The above naysayers are in such a minority they do not even realize how small a minority it is.

oh come now, eddie
The majority of conservatives were with Romney - especially respectable leaders in the party. All Huck has is pretty much the bigot brigade and people whose only criterion for pres is religion. Everyone else realized Romney was the best choice, by far.

Huck PAC is just another embarrassing self-promotion from the Huckster.

Shameless Huckster
Mike Huckabee is all about Mike Huckabee, a pleasant and engaging fellow who has discovered a silver vein and has set about to mine it. What does Mike’s Huck-PAC compensation package look like? Soon enough he’ll be moving in next to the wrong Reverend Wright. Many have used Christ to make a buck. Here’s one more.

Huck this...
Matt said: 'Many of us hoped Huckabee would use the platform and publicity he garnered during his presidential run to start a national organization'

And many more of us hoped Huckabee would go to the Isle of Misfit Candidates, get captured by feral Democrats, thrown into a pot, eaten, thrown up again, and swept into the garbage bin of politicians we're sorry we ever had to hear of.

We are not the minority. Letss see. Who got MORE votes in VA? Romeny. Huck only 'won' that one from a back room deal. Who got just a handfull of votes less than McCain? Romeny again. Who has honesty, dignity and the American way? Right again! Romney. Tell you what. Get your boy to run third party with Barr. That will show you exactly how much support your guy really has.

...still insanely jealous of Romney and trying to outdo him.

The fact is that Romney would be working for the Republican Party even if his name wasn't being bandied about as a potential VP. Huckabee is a greedball, because he doesn't know what to do with ambition.

Huckabee for President!
Don't know what "book you've been reading" to think that conservative want Huckabee to attack social issues outside politics, but from where I'm standing, EVERYONE is saying we "missed out with letting Huckabee get away" this year and there will be TREMENDOUS pressure for him to run again. He is the future of the Republican Party, if it is to survive. He has tremendous grassroots ground support. Some conservative leaders backed Romney because of his deep pockets and they didn't think Huckabee could win without the money. He certainly proved himself and many have already stated publically they should have backed Huckabee and believe me, we won't make the same mistake twice! The good thing about Huckabee not quit clinching the nomination this time, we will be so hungry for more Huckabee in 4 years, he will be overwhelmed with support!!!
Lori writes: Wednesday, April, 16, 2008 6:58 PM
Huck's "me-too".
Word was early after Romney's withdrawal from the race that his future would be to promote conservatism and conservatives for office via a new PAC. Huckabee must have read that and shouted "me too, me too!" This guy is such a wannabe I don't know how his supporters hang around. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, though. He's like a kid brother who wants to grow up to be just like Mitt Romney.
nrobyar writes: Wednesday, April, 16, 2008 7:04 PM
Do something productive
For those people on here that are embarrassing themselves and the rest of the Republicans out here by acting so full of jealousy and venom because Mike Huckabee created something that will help the Republican Party and your candidate didn't think of it, please use your time to do something productive for your candidate. Do you know that seeing your bad attitude speaks very poorly for your candidate. You should use your time more wisely than to try and spread negativity. No-one wants a candidate that arouses that kind of behavior. If as you say "no-one wants Huckabee as president, why are you wasting so much time trying to "trash" his reputation? Seems to me you are very worried that he is gaining momentum and respect even across party lines and is a force to be reckoned with in 2012 or 2016! WE LIKE MIKE!!!

I think Mike Huckabee is wonderful! I'm so glad he's using his influence to help other Conservative Republicans get elected. I think it's funny to hear Romney say he wants to do this too. With all Romney's money, you'd think he'd be the first to get this done? Apparently, even with all his money he can't do this either. Go Huckabee -- I hope to see you as McCain's VP!

exactly how will this help republicans? Wil there be a religious test? no Catholics, Mormons, Jews will besupported by the is PAC? Why is it named after Huckabee? Ok, I got it. Were not welcome in your party. Only if I clap my hands, praise Jesus every two seconds and get his name tattooed on my elbow.

Huck hates, and we vote too. Sorry, does not fly with me. This is Huck just being his own self serving self. He said he's waiting for 'marching orders' from McCain, to go out and campaign for him. Romney took it upon himself to ask what McCain needed, then when he found out, went out and did it - and continues to do it. Huck just sits by the phone, waiting for 'the call'. Keep waiting, huck. it won't come.

Huckabee pathetically fails to realize that he is a has-been-Huckabeen. So many of us are sick of the sight of this charlatan snake oil salesman and just wish he'd go away for EVER. We have the Iowans to thank for this loser and they will have learned their lesson well before the next election (these are the people who gave the Dems Dean in 2004!). His blind followers are very, very sad. They keep talking VP. It won't happen--McCain is way too wise to add someone to his ticket with so many scary skeletons in his closet. Huck's a phoney - Let me count the ways
Huck is suddenly pretending to care about conservative ideals. He was once a conservative governor, but he made a left turn somewhere along the way, pardoning 1000 criminals, raising enormous taxes, and advocating amnesty. He's a liberal in his heart, and is a disaster on foreign policy and the economy, our 2 most important issues. Flat tax cover or not.

Not only that, he lies, he's a bigot and he ran a deceptive and divisive campaign. He learned a lot from the Clintons - and all of it bad.

Huck is no where near being decent enough, conservative enough, or qualified enough to be pres or VP and everyone with a brain knows it.

Please listen...Romney had the idea for a conservative group BEFORE Huckabee. Has he started one yet? No, instead he's sacrificing his time to campaigning for McCain.

Maybe there will be there will be some "useful fools" who donate, but maybe even them can pick a lemon when they see one. I see the Huck PAC promises will support Republican candidates who are passionate advocates for tax reform, a strong national defense, real border security, life, the family, less government and individual liberty. You know, all the things he opposed as governor before he re-invented himself. He's a joke and should just let it be. Some people are just like the Clintons - no shame.

Same old tunes.....
Huckabee is heads and tails above Romney in both character and honesty! Romney's true colors have been exposed to the point where Christian conservative leaders have admitted they should have backed Mike a long time ago but were dazzled by the $$$ Romney has. Too bad, but at least they came out and admitted they were wrong and they should have endorsed Mike sooner! Mike has stuck by his values/morals/convictions throughout and Romney is the ever-changing chameleon...he changes with the wind (flip-flop, flip-flop). We all know that and so should you people who keep pushing him on all of the rest of us. Give it up already! Huck is the man!!!

Thanks for the joke. I needed a good laugh! your best one liner: "Huckabee is heads and tails above Romney in both character and honesty." I'm still rolling on the floor and my sides hurt from laughing so hard.

Please, if indeed you were serious (doubt it), go and read Wyrich's flipfloppflipper back into the real conservative column. (Not hucks). Seems he was just upset over McCain, not Romney. Big guy, to admit he was had by the Huck lovers.

Better than Hucks SNL appearance
Was Romney's top 10 reasons at the correspondents dinner last night. Here's some of it. It was pretty funny, and some of it a little to ironic (My personal fav is the Christian Leader comment. First time Mitt slamms Huck in the same manner that Huck and his minions have tried to slame Mitt - and failed).

In non debate action, Mitt Romney just made an impromptu appearance at the Radio-Tv Correspondents Dinner in DC to offer up the Top 10 Reasons Why I Dropped Out.

Per Hotline editor Amy Walter, here are a few of the 10:

Not as many Osmonds as I thought
Got tired of corkscrew landings
Wasn't room in the campaign for two Christian leaders
I'd rather get fat, grow a beard and try for a Nobel Prize
Once Ann realized I couldn't win, fundraising dried up
Flawed theory that as UT goes so goes the nation

As long as Hucks around.....
Romney is doomed. Next time around Huck will have more momentum, taking more support from Romney including conservative stalworth,Paul Wayreich, (sp?), you know Heritage Foundation founder, who has already stated he was wrong to hitch is wagon to Romney after seeing Huckabee proove his worth. More will follow the example of PW especially now since with the creation of HuckPac.

Look, Huckabee has been more consistent over his lifetime on many important issues that matter to conservatives and thats why the appeal. He connects better with fly-over country people.

I will add this too. Some of you Romney supporters need to get over the Mormon/Christain resentment because the longer it is brought up the more you alienate yourselves from the rest of the conservative base and since there is more "Christain" (if a label must be added) than "Mormon" conservatives, it puts the "Mormon" conservatives at the short end of the stick. So, since the primaries are over, lets agree to disagree, and lets get behind McCain and whomever becomes the VP and unify this republican party.
wise woman writes: Thursday, April, 17, 2008 11:12 AM
On the other hand, Huck is exercising
his rights as an American citizen. His being in the president race early for 2012 gives the public more time to examine his record and platform.

How can this hurt Romney! It can only help Mitt as the contrast between the two men will be sharp. Extra exposure makes wonderful photography - same in politics. Look at the "good" or hidden things that are coming out in the Demo. side. We know more about Obama and Hillary - things they wanted kept out of the media spotlight - just because there has been time for discovery.

Meanwhile, Mitt is working to help John McCain get his message out. Not sure if Huck has thrown much support in that direction. Which man is the better friend!

Let's not waste energy writing off Huck. We have better fish to fry such as united the GOP to make sure John gets into the White House. Mitt will be a team player and help the party and John - and in the process help us to escape the problems of having elected Obama or Hillary in 2008.

Mitt has a long-range plan to be of service. We can help best by rising above the fray - tempting thought it is to trash a candidate such as Huck. But let's show more class than that. Also, if we don't, we will be considered shrill and our voices will be pushed back instead of being voices of reason and tolerance.
PC writes: Thursday, April, 17, 2008 11:35 AM
red state
The only resentment Mormons have is for Huckabee and those who feel the same way as he does about the LDS faith. I don't believe they are great in number at all. Look how miserably the anti-Mitt ad failed - a much larger number of people came to Romney's defense than those who signed against him. Weyrich is all over the place, and has damaged his credibility by hanging with the other signers who were mostly anti-Mormon folks. Then he denounced their effort and had his name removed.

wise woman is right - the more Huckabee exposes himself, the more opportunity folks will have to see what he is really all about. Many people know his liberal record and other ethical problems, but some still don't. And his followers are just plugging their ears and saying "LA LA LA LA LA". They don't want to hear the truth because they base their vote on religion alone.

I'm never going to stop telling the truth about Huckabee. And it has little to do with Mormons vs. Christians as you may think, red state.

Fair Tax
There are many, many, many of us who aggressively seek "Fair Tax" - for this is in fact, the most equitably doable route out of the economic mess America is in!
Huckabee's definitely an up and comer. We just hope he "gets out there" soon enough to get Fair Tax in affirmative motion.

Huckabee cannot win, Silknspark
Not in 2012 or ever. He "got out there" and could not overcome his record or his character issues.

And he is not an authentic spokesman for the fair tax. He only used it as cover for his abysmal record as a tax raiser. Remember, he thinks raising taxes gives people hope.

Huckabe only attracted people who vote based on religion. He will never win the nomination because of the LDS population in the western states.

About all he is good for is to stir up trouble and sow division. He has no intention of uniting the party.

You've nailed it on the head. The Fair Tax was a big reason that I supported Huckabee. There were really no real differences between any of the candidates, besides Ron Paul. Even Guiliani said he would appoint justices to the court like Alito and Roberts.

The Mittwits are just silly-mad over the fact that on Super Tuesday, Huckabee bent Romney over and beat him like a bad boy. Romney was supposed to win hands down; he was throwing so much money around, and had the talk radio hosts all plugging him; instead of making Huckabee the footnote everyone thought he would be, Romney himself lost. Even after the whole thing was over, Romney only came out ahead of Huckabee by, like, two delegates. Some have even put Huckabee ahead in the delegate count.

If Romney had embraced the Fair Tax, I believe that not only would he have beaten Huckabee, he would currently be our nominee. But Romney's focus groups missed the importance of tax reform, and he missed the opportunity to really inspire a lot of people.

Huckabee will never win. Trash Huckabee so he will never win. Which is it?

Do you fear him or despise him?

Do you think your childish anger and venom will really make people think highly of Romney?

Even a 12 year old can recognize irrational hatred!!!

Your posts just show what type of people supported Romney. Although, I do not believe you are the only type of people who supported Romney. Many others were those who only knew anything about the candidates from media advertising. If Romney's experience this primary season is any indication, he will never have success in American politics.

To spend one hundred million dollars and get taken to the cleaners on the day (super Tuesday)when money spoke loudest, says all one needs to know about Romney as a policitician.

Seems to me, it took Huck full month to even come close to mitt! Oh yea, that's a win for the bigot column, I suppose. But in the real world, where the rose colored glasses are totally off, and the sun shines out here in the west, we know the REAL story. Huck is just ticked that his phone aint ringing with John McCain asking for favors, like subbing for him and stuff.

The majority of his followers are either simpletons who cannot interpret his record or make a proper judgment concerning his character flaws, or bigots who agreed with him that there should never be a Mormon president.

Huck Campaigning for McCain
Geesh!, people, esp. you, queenmumm. Just when was it that you discovered such animosity within yourself toward someone who believes in the Lord? You not only trash Gov. Huckabee over his belief, but you trash his supporters, too. Did you know that Romney is or was a Bishop? Should us non-Romney supporters faint out of fear that he will "seal" all of our families, "have baptisms for our DEAD", and make us all convert to Mormonism? I don't think so, and you really shouldn't think that Huck will convert us all to Baptists and require us to "thump Bibles." We Huck supporters like his message...that's why we support him...plain and simple. His being unashamed of Christianity is merely a plus.
Romney campaigned in Utah and some of the western states with McCain. In the coming week, or weeks, Gov. Huckabee will be campaigning in the Southern states with McCain, and if you remember, McCain and Huck have no animosity toward each other. If some of the folks on this SO-CALLED conservative Townhall environment would channel all that negativity (sometimes downright hatred) into something positive, we could be a force that neither Clinton nor Obama could overcome.
PC writes: Thursday, April, 17, 2008 8:38 PM

Huck is also unashamed of his bigotry against Mormons. Is that also a plus for you?

If McCain does ask Huck to campaign with him, he will do so holding his nose. Huckabee is an embarrassment to the GOP. I doubt McCain wants to come within 100 miles of him.

McCain already is a force that Clinton and Obama cannot overcome. (A rock will beat them.) We will win without the likes of Huckabigot to drag in his "followers".

Hint Luce - the animosity some of us feel for Huck is that he is a shabby mean little man who dissed millions of Mormons without breaking a sweat, and never sincerely apologized to us. He will never win us back and doesn't stand a chance for office in the future.

blind, deaf and dumb (as in lack of brain cells) to rally around a slickster doofus like Mitt Romney. It was pathetic to watch pinhead Talk Radio fawn all over him, when he reinvented himself as a conservative just 4 years ago -- at the ripe old age of 57.

The Mittwits out in full force
I always love to see the Mittwits foaming at the mouth. They called us Huckabee-supporters liberals right up until Super Tuesday and other venomous names for not supporting their candidate, but when Super Tuesday rolled around suddenly we were heralded as fellow Conservatives... provided we gave their guy our vote. And we didn't. And our man, Mike Huckabee, despite being royally outspent, and having the Wall Street elitist attack machine assail him, not only avoided getting drubbed, but beat Romney down and won the heartland of the Republican party -- the South.

Mitt meanwhile was most competitive in the north. But what do you expect when you're liberal enough to implement a court order on gay marriage rather than defy it, sign into law $50 abortion, and mandate that people be part of a captive market for healthcare by law? You expect the same you'd expect of anyone who runs to the left of Ted Kennedy - hardcore liberal.

It looks like talk radio still hasn't learned its lesson: don't assail your listeners, and if you're going to critique, do so in a reasonable fashion rather than coming off so desperate that you'll say anything.
Stoic Patriot writes: Thursday, April, 17, 2008 9:34 PM

But so far, have not seen huckabee out on the trail for McCain. In fact, I called the McCain office today, to ask for the schedule for Huck and McCain show, and they told me there was no events planed.

Hummm.

Mac Knows that Huck is caustic. Rove appears to be advising McCain, and Rove can' stand Huck, and loves Romeny. Hence, you see Romney everywhere.

Huck is a petty little man who is so jelous of Mitt's success and family and yes, FAITH, that he has to put him down at every turn. Romney has never gone personal, as Huck has. I'll NEVER vote for Huckabee. I would rather suffer through 4 years of Clinton/Obama, than have a first class jerk and bigot in the white house. I too have dignity.
