Winners: Mitt Romney, Daily Kos, Talk Radio, Clinton and/or Obama
This just proves that Romney has zero appeal to people he'll need in the general election.
By the way, I think Romney took a "neo-populist" turn in Michigan, with his new talk of "middle-class" tax-cuts, and promises of factory jobs that even he really can't bring back.
But congratulations anyway.

|
A win most likely worth the great amount of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ spent.
Congratulations too, to you Hugh, NeoConScum and all teh others who have been on Mitt's train from last year.
To Joe: Introspection may be working. Best of wishes to you too. |
|
I would say it SHOULD bode well if he's going to bailout the chief industry of each state.
Let's see: $20 billion 50 states ------------- $1 trillion
Yeah that ought to buy the presidency.
(Don't forget Mandated Hill-er-MittCare)
LOL!

|
Promised to bail out MI's auto industry slightly NeoPopulist?
Seems like a big-government solution.
Kinda liberal sounding.
Nice win. We'll see if the disengenuousness that Dean Barnett writes about will play so well in SC.
I seriously doubt it.
Maybe if Mitt goes back to attacking Huckabee... |

for conservatives in America. Mitt may not be the ideal conservative candidate (Fred would be better ideologically), but Mitt is a winner, has the resources and organization, and has a history of success in many endeavors. Either Mitt or Fred would be great presidents for America. Even more so, stopping Clinton and Obama from that power would be equally important. |
|
I congratulate Governor Romney on his victory tonight. He and his campaign worked hard and effectively to make sure Michigan voters welcomed their native son with their support. You have won the round and earned your celebration tonight. I salute you, and offer you my genuine good wishes for the night.
John McCain
Mitt won fair and square. Congratulations to Mitt and his supporters. Upward and onward. |
|
Hewitt posts do seem to attract anti-Romney libs and RINOs like nothing else.
"NeoConScum"! LOL, yeah you are a Republican, sure, about as much as McCain is a sparkling magic pixie.
Can't trust anyone who talks about neocons. |
|
|
Of course Romney beat McCain handily among registered Republicans. McCain is really a Democrat that's just too dumb to know it. |
|
|
Reagan conservatives don't care for Romney's anti-conservative record, either. |
|
Romney seems to be finding his stride. This victory is a result of wisely used money and a strong organization but also of a candidate who is finding his voice and the right themes. Romney is a natural on the economy. He understands it and speaks with authority on it.
This is a big loss for McCain. To lose by 9% and more than 80,000 votes in an open primary state that McCain won in 2000 has to be a wrenching loss. McCain had all of his votes and all of Rudy's votes and still lost big to a born again conservative, with the conservative vote divided among Romney, Huck and Fred. That speaks volumes about McCain's weakness as a candidate.
Huck lost the Evangelical vote to Romney. Huck may have lost every county. He may get 1 delegate. He has proven that he can not win the primary. He does not have the money, appeal nor organization to win a big industrial state.
He is running interference for McCain and Rudy and is running for VP.
ABC is saying that SC is a must win for both McCain and Huck. ABC may be right for a change.

Michigan Democrats have spoken. They want Mitt.
They must have followed the advice of the Daily KOS blog which urged all Michigan Democrats to vote for Mitt.
And John McCain has proven he is a terminal idiot by telling Michigan voters exactly what they did NOT want to hear: those lost Auto jobs are not coming back.
And Mitt the *populist* told them he would "Not rest" until all those auto jobs are restored to Michigan.
As for McCain, I wonder what the old fool will say to alienate South Carolina voters?
I know! He will tell them that all those textile jobs are gone forever.
Maybe Huckabee will learn a lesson from Slick Mitt the real poulist and tell the SC voters he will NOT REST until SC Textiles rule the world.

From AP:
Mitt Won, Authenticity Lost WASHINGTON - Mitt Romney's victory in Michigan was a defeat for authenticity in politics.
The former Massachusetts governor pandered to voters, distorted his opponents' record and continued to show why he's the most malleable — and least credible — major presidential candidate.
And it worked. ////////////
ouch!
Mitt's had it easy 'til now. |

... er [sic] waking moment |
|
I read Hugh's book about Romney last year and he made a strong case for a President Romney. Iowa evangelicals fell in love with Huck and Independents gave N.H. to McCain, but Michigan should give Romney a boost. Will he finish closer to Hucki in S.C.? Can he bat down Rudi in FL?
Romney has the resume. Let's see if he can finish running the guantlet. |
|
|
Romney's never said he wanted to bail out the auto industry with billions or millions. He wants a free market solution, not government. |
|
The Rudy strategy has been dependent on no clear front-runner emerging in the early primaries. The MSM had been propping McCain up as such a front-runner. Tonight, McCain's status was exposed as non-appealing to Republicans.
Whatever happens in SC, if Rudy wins Florida, he heads into Super-Duper-Tuesday in good shape. |
|
cornpone harry and seansfm, Did you even read the headline of this post? If you count only Republican ballots, Romney's margin of victory is greater. That meeans that Dem and independent ballots helped McCain, not Romney. Your Daily Kos story is a total myth. |
|
Realistically, Romney is in the best long-term position:
1. McCain? Probably too old. 2. Huckabee? Too gaffe-prone, by the standards of this secular, anti-Christian country. 3. Rudy, Fred? Seem very slow out of the starting blocks, though could change. 4. Romney? Lots of money, no negatives. |
|
"Your Daily Kos story is a total myth."
Shhh, rational thinking befuddles the anti-Romney trolls... |
|
|
Mr. Romney's run for the Nomination grows... |
|
|
Rhodes are working together to put a Democrat in the White House. Mitt will be mince meat for any Democrat who is right of Kucinich. |
|
He promised to spend billions of federal taxpayer dollars to "revive" the automobile industry. In other words, he did just what he did in Masschusetts- he pandered to the electorate.
What do you think guys like Hugh and Rush would say if Hillary or Obama proposed to throw 20 billion federal taxpayer dollars at a problem? But if Mitt says it, that's okay. I have one question: Why? Okay, two questions: How did this guy become the "onservative choice"?
Now, I'm not complaining. Like most Dems, I think Romney will be a sitting duck for us come fall. I just think it is hilarious that Republicans think this say-anything guy is preferable to a genuine war hero that has such tremendous appeal to independents.
Even as a Democrat and union guy, I know the only way the American auto industry turns itself around is by making products people want to buy. There's a reason the Ford Escape Hybrid kepps setting sales records while Ford can't even give away Explorers. The industry seems to be getting the message, as reports show American cars have passed the Europeans in reliability and are gaining on the Japanese. Government can help by fighting for level plying fields in countries where trade is a one-way phenomenon.
While Democrats are talking about fair trade, tax credits for fuel-saving and environmentally-friendly technologies and changing tax rules that subsidize the outsourcing of jobs, will the Republicans nominate a candidate who wants to throw money at the companies without determining if we are merely subsidizing bad economic decisions by those companies? Will you make an, ahem, "principled" argment such as "we're not against federal intervention, just the federal intervention the Democrats propose"?
I can't wait. Go Mitt Go! |
|
I noticed that the Daily KOS blog which "urged Michigan Democrats to vote for Mitt," failed, as only 7% of Democrats voted for Republican candidates. Thankfully, they didn't all vote for McCain either, as many pundits thought (or were hoping) would happen.
For those bloggers who are afflicted with a severe dose of "extra sour grapes," we offer a free gallon of pure, clover honey to sweeten your loss.

I'm sorry I don't want to hear about anyone's anti-conservatism when Romney won this based in great part on the very unconservative promise to use Government to somehow stop jobs from leaving Michigan. Dislike him if you want, but the fact is McCain told the truth and got burned for it. This is the primary where pandering won. Sorry if that displeases the kind of folks that think only Romney supporters should read Townhall or something.
In any case its a long election, and this could go beyond Super Tuesday depending on how things shape up. It'd be nice if a few more Romney supporters could get that. |
|
by tomorrow.
His support amongst Republicans was "a mile wide and an inch deep".
If he got slaughtered by Romney in Michigan amongst conservatives, does ANYONE think he can win UBER-CONSERVATIVE South Carolina?
No way.
Romney wins SC and NV this weekend. |
|
So don't be too shocked when their lead story says he only won by pandering.
Here's the rule: vote for the republican the MSM hates the most and you will have found the best conservative. |
|
|
Michigan voters voted for Mitt based on his identity not ideas (4 out of 10 to be exact). In the other 49 states, Mitt will need to make a stronger closing argument than "I am confident Michigan will vote for another Romney". Also, a rich republican businessman using his dad's name recognition to win the nomination is too cliche and status quo for a win in November. Hugh, where is the column Identity Vs. Ideas Part 4? Remember the voters were supporting Romney senior's memory not Mitt's ideas - and any analyst who ignore's this fact is not to be trusted. Welcome home Mitt, Michigan voters really miss your dad. |
|
|
Thank God Romney won. Now Hugh can step away from the ledge. |
|
|
Did you read that McCain won in voters over age 65, the people who would remember Governor Romney the most? |
|
"Here's the rule: vote for the republican the MSM hates the most and you will have found the best conservative."
Sure, screw issues, I'll vote to stick it to the MSM. |
|
Two separate comments.
First to regtroll, the AP statement you give about Romney's win in Michigan being a loss for authenticity in politics came from John McCain just a few hours aftger his "genuine" speech congratulating Gov. Romney and wishing him well for the night.
I don't buy into the now evangelicals are welcome back into the fold bit. They were never out as we constantly hear about how candidates polled among evangelicals. That alone tells us that evangelicals are considered a crucial part of the GOP electorate. Now, if you want to talk about others being pushed out of the fold, you might have a point. |
|
Your observations are well placed. What you are responding to is simply another version of a "nut job". Hugh Hewitt runs a website that is dedicated to "freedom of thought", of that you have been witness to. |
|
he is the smartest candidate! Our country needs Mitt's talent and wisdom more than ever. He wants to loosen the taxes and regulations that have been imposed by our government that are making it impossible for our businesses (both small and large) to compete! I hope everyone will stop fighting about "appearance" (would you choose your surgeon based on how friendly he is - or how competent he is!) and "religion" (unless they are campaigning on it - which seems to be skirting the really vital issues here!)and be grateful that there is a very decent man who is running for POTUS who is amazingly qualified and capable of going the distance. Hillary and Obama campaign fund accounts are 30% larger than Mitt Romneys. Whoever runs against the democratic nominee is going to need that fiscal support for the general election campaigning. Mitt is fiscally and socially conservative, he is the right candidate for our country in 2008! Go Mitt!!! |
