Kick God Out of the GOP?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 9:57 AM
That's the advice from Kathleen Parker writing in today's Washington Post.

With all due respect, she's wrong.  Faith in God and transcendant moral values isn't what hurts the GOP, although a certain clumsiness in invoking Him and discussing moral issues generally occasionally does.  And it's misguided to argue that the GOP will attract more young people if it somehow tries to go atheist in the style of the liberal left -- that, more than anything, will guarantee Republican failure, both because people of faith will leave the party and because intelligent secularist young people will prefer the real party of faithlessness over a "me too but less" party of secular humanism.

John McCain and the Republicans didn't lose because of the religiosity of some of the party's base.  They lost because Barack Obama managed to lure millions of religious voters away from the GOP -- in no small part by emphasizing his personal faith in God.

So far, there's been precious little evidence that any Republican office-holder has tried to violate the First Amendment prohibition on establishing a religion.  Whatever discussion of faith and virtue in the public square that happens around election time is perfectly consistent with the principles upon which this country was founded.  The Founding Fathers established a country with a secular government -- predicated on the notion that the government and the nation would be populated by a deeply religious people.  And attempting to remove religion from public discussion, as Parker does, runs contra to their notions.

It's always a bad thing to throw the baby out with the bathwater.  It's even worse to throw out the Almighty.

Kathleen Parker article
I disagree with Parker's point that the Republican party should de-emphasize its current obsession with Christianity.

Repuglicans should become ever-more evangelical and religious, which should help keep the party of morons permanently irrelevant and, one hopes, soon defunct.

I'm with Bob Munck when he urges Republicans to to run Sarah Palin for president in 2012. That will ensure that the Repugs stay sidelined and powerless at least until 2016, by which time Barack Obama may have managed to undo a good portion of the damage inflicted on America and the world by the Bush criminal cabal and its Repuglican enablers.

The Republican party is the deadly enemy of peace, freedom, justice and human rights everywhere. The world won't be safe until its destruction is complete.

Thank you Ms. Platt-Liebau
I hope I typed your name correctly. I'm glad to see a TH columnist speak up about this. I'm not so sure Kathleen Parker should be forced to leave because to me that seems too much like censoring. But I do hope she somehow gets the message that her viewpoints, which seem quite liberal, are a bit out of place here. Her expressing her views on Sarah Palin, conservatives, and now God in TH is like someone talking about the usefullness of shampoo to Hare Krishnas. It just doesn't quite fit. I haven't been a member here long, and I haven't read too much of KP's past artices, but from what I've read on posters in her columns, her once strait moving vehicle is in serious need of alignment as it now veers to the left. For her sake she should consider writing elsewhere where more readers will be receptive to her columns. Unless she doesn't mind the controversy her columns bring here and also doesn't mind the slamming she gets from those who post on her columns. I hope you and others have a talk with her, and feel free to use the shampoo-Hare Krishna analogy :)

Kathleen Parker is an idiot
who should never have been allowed to post any commentaries on Townhall.

She is the one who attacked Sarah Palin. Now we are seeing the real reason. Sarah Palin is a stong believer. Obviously Kathleen Parker is not, and hates all things God.

You are correct in your assessement, the day the GOP goes secular is the day you can kiss this party goodbye.

I will not be surprised if Obama removes all churches from being not-for-profit entities. His base would love that, and Obama can certainly use the economic situation as a reason to reign in billions in tax deductions made every year.

Religion won't be under assault, just Christianity. Watch! The Prop 8 California vote will be an example since millions were spent by churches to support Prop 8.

It's going to get a whole lot uglier before it gets better, and it will only get better if the GOP holds to it's tenets and stands strong!

Sounds plausible but do you have an actual quote or two of the Framers, saying that was their reasoning?

And are you saying that their motivation was to exclude God? Or was it to promote Unity and prevent what they all knew was meant by the phrase "Party spirit" in Paul's letter to the Galations 5:20?

Moral values
If you recall, the one thing that won the Presidency for President Bush was moral values. In this election moral values also play an important part in the way the people voted on the marriage between two people of the same sex. Don't blame God because of the campaign McCain ran. Obama won because he ran a flawless campaign and McCain lost because of he didn't.

God GOP & 1st Amendment
Forget about Kathleen Parker. The GOP should definately keep the Judeo-Christian God & social conservative values in their platform. I agree with others here who have said the real problem is they strayed too far to the left to try to win over voters they could never appeal to anyway. Stupid mistake. Their base is made up of conservatives, be they moderate or farther right, and that include Christians.
The 1st Amendment: the Founders intent was to ensure everyone was free to practice any faith or no faith, without govt interference. Simple & brilliant. However, many (apparently not too well educated) people think it means every hint of Christianity should be banned from anywhere but a private home or church. Not exactly what the Founders meant. After watching this country slide into moral decay & me-first egocentric behavior over the past 30 yrs, I think it's time to bring God out of hiding. Enough with the Christian bashing. I know lots of them & none are abortion clinic bombers, fanatics, or zealots. They're just people of faith who believe we should strive to live our lives with dignity, integrity, & morality. Some attend church, some do not. Some a good people, some are not. Big shock. Either way, I'm tired of these crazy loons on the far left who think they know-it-all & really know very little.

A Little Late
Any citizen with eyes can see that our country has rotted from within. The fault lies with all of us. Democracy cannot survive without an educated population and our short attention span has finally caught up with us. The implosion of our way of life is no one's fault but our own. The extent to which our country has been fouled is gradually becomming personalized. We are in for a protracted period of scarcity which naturally follows a protracted period of confusion about what is real and what is not. Self-delusion in no way to manage a Democracy.
Apollo writes: Thursday, November, 20, 2008 4:15 AM
Christian Roots of America?
People who actually studied American history at the time of the Founders know that God was deliberately removed from the Constitution because of the extraordinarily high level of religious bigotry at that time.

John Jay, coauthor of the Federalist Papers and the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, ran for governor of New York on a platform demanding that all Catholics be exiled from New York and their property be confiscated. He won the election but, fortunately for the state's Catholic population, the legislature was not quite as bigoted as Jay.

What was unusual about Jay's campaign is that there was nothing unusual about trying to ban a religion. Six states had established religions and many states had laws prohibiting certain religions or religious practices. It was a criminal offense in every state to deny the existence of God. In Massachusetts anyone who denied the Trinity was banned from public office.

Massachusetts, always the most deranged state in the US, still has that requirement for governor although it has been rendered moot by the 14th Amendment

The real reason that "God" was removed from the Constitution was that if God were made a part of the Constitution it would have to be some particular god i.e. the Baptist god or the Methodist god or even the Deist god. Everyone feared being subjected to the someone else's god and so God was deliberately removed.

The obvious dangers inherent in any established religion were eventually recognized and all states disestablished their churches by 1840.

Republicans take note: If you base your party on any god, then you are denying the wisdom of the Founders who understood just how dangerous "God" could be in the Constitution.

Keep your arguments based on facts and reason and leave God for your religious services.
Vampire's Reflection writes: Thursday, November, 20, 2008 3:24 AM
Faith Based Initiatives
Are establishing religion by giving them money.

It was the GOP that wanted Faith Based Initiatives precisely because of their desire to insert religion into government.

"So far, there's been precious little evidence that any Republican office-holder has tried to violate the First Amendment prohibition on establishing a religion. "

So I guess giving religious institutions money doesn't qualify as "establishment" by the letter of the law.

To to DEMOCRATS and LIBERALS, faith based initiatives violate COMPLETELY the spirit of the first amendment by giving religious institutions money. It's bad enough they are tax excempt. The founders would be rolling over in their graves.

Then of course you have the Monica Goodling effect. Unqualified people given affermative action positions because, taa daaa! they are religious!

The GOP is just one big RELIGIOUS party. Religion, religion, religion.

Crazy.

"Steared" wrong
Hey stearman
I don't think all conservatives would move to Blue states. Only the ignorant ones. Smart conservatives know they need a large, diverse, educated population to survive. After a split, Blue states would remain more educated and richer. Red states would become even more uneducated, backward, and irrelevant without blue state money, smarts, and industry propping them up. Without the regulations conservatives so despise, your sorry economy and workforce would be endlessly depleted and in the gutter, begging for help from the civilized world. It might be a quiet place though. I will grant that progress in a real democracy is loud, unruly, and a little scary, which is why fearful rightwingers exist - can't handle change.
Stearman writes: Thursday, November, 20, 2008 1:20 AM
Humonga - dream on!
If all the conservatives were to move to states like North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, and several other states - and be allowed to elect our own form of government and create laws that abide by the Constitution, those states would quickly become major economies. At the same time, the states with nothing but a far-left population would quickly spend themselves into bankruptcy and lose businesses by the tens of thousands. Your government would not be able to figure out why all the businesses moved from high-tax, unionized states with tons of regulation to the conservative right-to-work states where taxes would be low and economic prosperity high. In our states, there would be far less government regulation and we would not be making irresponsible loans that could collapse the economy. The conservative states would have a strong professional military and a wall around the entire border of the conservative states. The wall would be to keep liberals like yourself from illegally entering our states in search of jobs - since jobs would be few and far between in Liberal-Land (better known as La-La-Land).

I pray for a peaceful dissolving of this once great republic. I pray the ignorant rightwing conservative hordes kindly retreat to the red state backwaters forever in happiness. What a load of garbage that
Parker unloaded on us with that column. Being too tied to Christianity isn't what did the Republicans in this time. The state of the economy, the war in Iraq and a bunch of other albatrosses were what weighed McCain down. Obama and his leftist illuminati platform swooped in and made a bunch of unrealistic promises that were bought up by everyone looking for something different.

Religious free GOP
A pox on Parker, but if the GOP wants to rebuild the Party free of any religious affiliation it should be free to do so. There should absolutely be no pandering to any Religious persuasion as a prerequisite as to whether or not a person should run for any political office period. Likewise I would hope that Conservative or Liberal religious organizations would choose whats best for the Country as opposed which Church a person belongs to when running for office.

The GOP trying to reorganize is in more danger of being consumed by the same old, same old NEOCONS, RINOS and other types of Liberal Republicans.

Wouldn't it be great, if all those Conservative Congress men and women who have the R beside their names, were to suddenly proclaim their Conservatism and put a C there instead? I'm sure this would definitely separate the Men and Women from the boys and girls, and if not that show their true colors. Oh by the way., Democrat Conservatives would be welcome to do the same

If it turns out that she is right that we are demographically doomed, then it is our duty to think smaller. Conservatives will gravitate to the still conservative states, and we will devolve into a separate republic.

For those of you who think this unrealistic, what do you imagine that they would do to us if we seceded? Send in ACORN "community organizers" in Union blue to drag us all back in? Absurd: they'll be happy to see us go. Ask them. They'll tell you. Remember all those "Jesusland" maps?

The real problem here is the cockamamy notion that life EVOLVED from imaginary, primitive, cells - which NEVER could have existed in the real world, ok.

It's insane that 100%-FREE-in-every-single-way citizens of the greatest country in the world -- including in thought and expression of thought -- ignorantly go on with this destructive FRAUD being taught and preached to us in public-schools and everywhere else - by politically charged teachers, scientists, judges, media, and everyone ELSE in the fraudulent propaganda business.

Until we stop letting our world be programmed with utter, fictional nonsense - the destruction to our world will continue. How's anyone going to put much trust in God and in God's laws, when He is propagandized out of a job and role in our world???

This is where the battle of truth must be waged -- human origin -- ok; NOT in merely talking about Jesus on the campaign trail - which is all it took to sucker millions of ignorant people into voting for Barack Obama. What a joke.

I encourage everyone to check out Ben Stein's new movie: Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.

Of course this subject's going to have big effects on the world and on politics - the subject is not about true science, but it's about politics.

2.) Lament McCain's "seduction" at her hands (again, wow.)

3.) Welcome Obama in and say things are wonderful

4.) Praise education as a means of reducing disease (compare San Fran to Moldova) and poverty (compare how knowledgable an American student is versus someone raised in India under the British school system -- again, utter nonsense)

5.) Bash evangelicals and social conservatives -- the only ones who are keeping this country from truly sinking into the cesspit.

Religion and the GOP
Perhaps, one of the things wrong with the GOP is that they HAVE abandoned God. They are supposedly against abortion but they do not aggressively try to overturn Roe V. Wade as they should be. Also, they supposedly are against same sex marriage but look at how many "stars" in the GOP support it.

In 2004, I heard a lot of Democrats say they are just as religious and the Republicans. I laughed at that idea but, perhaps, they were right. Maybe the GOP only pretends to believe in God. Without God, where is morality? I have, for some years, referred to the Democrats as the immoral left. I believe that title fits them. The Republicans need to re-establish their connection with God, if they ever had one, and prove they are truly more moral than the Democrats, who, as far as they are concerned, believe anything goes. If it's immoral and perverted, they support it.

Ronald Reagan one said that he did not leave the Democrat Party the party left him. That is how I feel about both parties. I'm now an Independent and I will not vote for ANY candidate if I do not believe he or she holds the Judeo-Christian beliefs that this country was founded upon.

We could abandon the pro-life issue and all of the pro-abortionists would be running towards the GOP. We could abandon all of the free-market policies and all of the socialists and communists would start voting for the GOP. We could abandon our platform of domestic energy production and all of the greens would come over to the GOP.

What would we have then?

Big mistake
The worst thing the Republican party could do now would be to move any further left. Big government, compromise, and pandering are exactly why they've lost their support in the first place.

State constitutional amendments defining marriage as between "one man and one woman" continue to pass with wider margins of victory that Obama's, so that alone should make it obvious where the people stand on values. In fact, the only one I know of that lost was Arizona's two years ago when it included unreasonable language that removed civil unions. That tells me the people have strong, conservative values at heart, but they are still reasonable. Voting for Obama tells me that they have lost hope, since that is what the man promises, not principle, since he hasn't established any.

Parker
We are talking about a writer who had an article published in the Washington Post right? Has the Post ever published anything pro-GOP? They are just another Obamaite rag in the tank for the Dems.

Jerry, I actually agree with you...
...your average liberal or liberal Christian IS on a par with your average abortion clinic bomber.

Kathleen's Party of inclusion.
Kathleen is exactly what is wrong. We should be reaching out to everyone and not dissecting out what we perceive as problematic.
While we reach out, we should not cower when our values are questioned. We should be outspoken, but not overbearing with our beliefs.

Attention seeking behavior
I read Ms. Parker's piece and declined to comment on her conclusory remarks. It may be appropriate to ignore the desperation stemming from her pen. She has taken on the guise of the ostracized individual that acts out more and more seeking the ire of those she has lost.

Ms. Parker writes of evangelical Republicans, "Which is to say, the GOP has surrendered its high ground to its lowest brows." Where? When? Who? I'd like to see her bill of particulars. Call the role ma'am. Who writes this stuff, Paul Haggis, Bill Mahr, or is it just late delivery from Murphy Brown?

Ms. Parker attacked the McCain/Palin ticket at a critical junction in a hot campaign. She gave comfort to the opponent. Now she seeks to articulate her choices and call it truth.

I'll stick with the way and the light.

Liberal left=Atheists
Don't you think your equation of people who are liberal with atheism is a bit...ignorant. Isn't it possible that a liberal just might believe in God too, and be just as a good a practicing Christian as your average clinic bomber?

Parker?
Washington Post?

Not sure. What are they, and what do they have to do with the GOP and/or conservatism?

Parker has it backwards
Palin saved Mac from further embarassment and I'm getting tired of elite widgets insulting the intelligence of the faithful who don't drink martinis.

Parker's right about preaching to the choir, however. We don't need to beat the voters over the head with religious and moral issues. We need persusion, not berations.

Anyway, taking advice from Dem wing of the Party got us Mac in the first place. Ann Coulter says it best in many of her columns, including this one:

Liberals and religion
Nothing makes me laugh harder than when a liberal says what they think the GOP should do to win the next election. As always it includes going from pro-life to pro-abortion and trying to exclude "faith voters." The irony is the only time the Democrats seem to have good election nights is when they try to act more conservative and run many “moderate” and pro-life candidates.

I think they should worry more about what they are going to do in the next 4 years. Now that there one message "Bush is evil," has no barring.

Pa leese!
The very first sentence of the First Amendment Bill of Rights says.."Government SHALL NOT respect the establishment of religion.." We need to focus on real issues and not worry about weather or not our politicians are pretending to be ordained by God..

Keeping the GOP Together
We need not downplay the "God factor". We can be wise about how we talk about faith. I am a devoted Bible-thumping Christian, but I don't need to invoke the Bible to support my political positions. On the other hand, we should not bristle when someone quotes from the Bible. It is one (if not THE) most influential collections of writings in our culture.

Kathleen Parker is an idiot
She flailed around about Palin (loving her then hating her) and is now suggesting the GOP need to abandon God? Sure if it wants to be a minority party of about 15%. Parker is weak and needs to be ignored.

The GOP needs to get to its core elements--lower taxes, smaller government, individual rights (including guns and right to life), and national defense. As for religious issues, the GOP needs to be a big tent of Judeo-Christian values. That is not inconsistent with any of those core values listed above.

Not a Bad Idea
I don't think it would be a bad idea at all for politicians to pretend to be Christian in order to get votes. I don't think it would be a bad idea to stop the practice of manipulating Bible verses to make it appear that a policy is biblical.

What would be even better would be for politics to stay out of churches. That would really be good.

As long as religion is in politics, then politics will be in religion.
