Mitt Romney for Car Czar?
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 7:11 PM
Larry Kudlow just said if we are going to have a car czar we need to get one "out of that inbred Detroit culture."

So how 'bout Mitt Romney? He's got a Michigan background and did turn around the Olympics!

Go for it Romney
I hope he gets the job and turns around the American auto industry. I hope he puts the union its place.

Volcher..sure why not...
The idiots in the congress want that half-senile
semi- useless old man to be the car- czar?
Instead of someone competant...wait .. he's like most everyone there ..useless!!
We will have cars running on brussel- sprouts
and cabbage. Little putt-putts .. passing wind all the way to the next garden !

MEALER AMERICAN MOTORS CORPORATION
Mealer Companies LLC will become the new USA automobile manufacturer. The Big Three is dead.
The AFL CIO and the UAW have damaged this nation enough and they are DONE.

I am through screwing around with these anti American scum bags. The Big Three are dealing the slave labor tradein other countries and deserve nothing from the US taxpayers.

UAW employees (not called Ford, GM or Chrysler employees by the way) make $100K to $200K for assembling cars PLUS beniefits beyond what Congress makes. They can shive them deep and hard.

Watch for Mealer Companies folks... I will pull the USA mindset back to the top of the bucket.. No need to wallow in the union caused crap heap at the bottom.

John Lewis Mealer

Like I said.. watch for me.

If some conditional funds are allotted and a Car Czar is appointed to run ramrod and piston, why not offer the position to Mitt Romney?

The job is akin to eating cactus so which ever individual is willing to bite down is going to have to have a sense of self and purpose.

Former Gov. Romney has the chops to do deals and do reforms of the business model. If he succeeds, he's demonstrated a Wm. Seidman hand that pushes his star in ascent. If he cannot handle the creaking 3, he falls hard.

If Mitt Romney takes the ‘Czar car’ and drives it, he's a gutsy guy and maybe the right man for the Bush Admin. to propose for dining on cactus.

Un-American to HAVE a car czar
What is a car czar? If we are talking about some politician, even a qualified businessman, telling businesses what to do, NO THANK YOU! These are just different beasts. Decisions made by businessmen SHOULD BE made with a lot less interest in public sentiment than those made by politicians. Frankly, this talk about Mitt being a bad person because he took over failed businesses and fired a bunch of people to make them profitable is just stupid. How many people does it serve for an unprofitable company to stay open and uncompetitive, eventually meaning the company totally flounders, fires everybody, liquidates assets, and has no money left after paying debts to give to shareholders? Mitt fixed businesses well. He made some people mad because he made hard choices, but that's business. And I don't mean that in a cold way. Are you really saying that failing businesses should keep employees they can't afford and build products that don't sell, all the while supported by government and politicians? Maybe you could argue that where defense or medical industries are concerned, but isn't this talk what got us to this point in the auto industry? I pray Mitt would never take this job. If the government wants to require these guys to hire some consulting company as part of the deal, fine. But don't let them put a politician in charge. Pols and business don't mix.

Why not hire Romney to actually
run one of the auto companies? Why do we need some government or quasi-government official to coordinate, dictate, whatever, to private companies?

If the government were serious about helping the auto industry then we would see the CAFE standards and other ridiculous rules be eliminated.

At least suspend the corporate tax for auto companies; that way, the auto companies wouldn't have to spend millions trying to minimize taxes and comply with the tax code--they could focus better on building cars.
Persnickety Curmudgeon writes: Wednesday, December, 10, 2008 11:19 PM
wrong Romney
Lets put Ronna Romney in charge of autos. That would REALLY shake things up. A female Czar and in charge of the good old boys BIG 3 no less!
Talk about excitement.

If only Dick Devos had been elected Governor. We'd all be Amway salespeople by now and all would be well here in Michigan.

Hey whitey
I don't want Mitt taking the job because they are looking for a fall guy.
But, if Mitt does take it, ( I doubt he'll even be offered it. Volker has it nailed in) the unions will be ticked, because they have a guy who knows what he's doing and will do whatever it takes to bust the unions. I'm for that one! Yea, it it means laying off some joker who stands around pushing a button for 75 bucks an hour and hiring someone who actually works for 45 - I'm all for that one. We've been shopping for a new car. I can tell you the price of an import is much less than the price of a american made. Oh, and I had a gremlin in the 70's when I first went off to college. It was a used one. Orange. the seventy dollar an hour figure is what the worker costs the company and is probably accurate
in my buisness i pay a carpenter 20.00 an hour my associated costs are an additional 45% this covers workmans comp ,fica ,ect... thats 29.00 per hour bare bones ,i can't afford health care for my guys and stay in biz and i'm non union so there are no costs there . I'm a vegetarian, licensed vet technician, anti- sports hunting conservative. The aerial wolf shooting in Alaska is distressing. However, it's a lie to porray this as sport hunting, it is done by wildlife management people. They resorted to this very reluctanly after exmaining other solutions. I wish more attention was paid to the prctice of killing tens of millions of dumped dogs, cats, puppies and kittens evry year, and teh fact that in many states they still cram these creatures into gas chambers. And don't get me started about the horrific cruelty done in factory farming to our "food" animals. Our so called "humane slaughter" laws are very inadequate.

I'm totally cool with someone qualified getting paid what a job is worth. I can push a button too. The unions have made cars unaffordable to the average person. We are paying cash for a new (used) car, as we are currently car shopping. But we've been offered payments up to 72 months, if we did not want to part with cash. No thanks. We'll avoid dept, and we are pretty sure we won't be buying American. You hate romney because he has a wonderful family - you don't. He has a great education . You don't. He has had a stellar career - your scraping by at mickeydee's (and eating all the profits). You hate him for what and who he is. The total package. Oh, and worse about him? He's.... ammmm ... LDS. Not sure I like a car czar
I'm not overly excited about a political appointee dictating to the car companies how to run their business. Having said that, if one is appointed, why would we consider a hugely successful businessman, one who has turned around numerous companies into successes, one who was put in charge of a sinking Olympic Games and turned it into a profitable success? That would make too much sense.

I know there are some detractors who will claim that Romney would cause layoffs and for some to lose their jobs. I say, this will not be a popularity contest and there has to be some hard decisions and there will undoubtedly be some pain felt by a lot of people in order to salvage this industry. If anyone could do it, Mitt could.

Whoopie for successful folks. Without drive, cash gets you no where. You on the other hand, need to get off the bottle and into a real job so you too can get 'experience'.

===============================================

Yes it is distressing. That is why Alaskans TWICE VOTED against this cruel practice, but voters were overruled by Alaska's government! Sport aerial hunting was previously allowed, but is now allowed only by "wildlife management-connected people". This is done for SPORTS HUNTERS SO THEY WILL HAVE MORE CARIBOU TO KILL! The oppostion to the most recent aerial hunting measure (August 2008) was largely the Safari Club International, which describes itself as the largest and most active big game hunting organization in the world! Palin's Speechwriter re: Safari Club
Matthew Scully, former speechwriter for President Bush and the writer of Palin's big debut convention speech, has this to say about the Safari Club, from witnessing it first hand:

Excerpts:

"I don't recall Mr. Bush having hunted before then as president, or having hunted since. Left to himself, without the pleadings of political advisers or hunting groups in need of affirmation, the president seems to prefer more innocent recreations like riding bikes, clearing brush or playing with the dog."

"Also present in Crawford was a fellow from Safari Club International. Based right here in Arizona, this is a group of 30,000 or so people whose all-consuming passion in life is killing big game, with all sorts of competitions to see who can kill the most and biggest "trophy animals." To win the highest award, for example, you have to kill upward of 360 animals – from an African elephant to an exotic sheep in Russia (yes, there are actually sheep safaris) to some wolf or polar bear minding his own business in the farthest reaches of the Arctic."

"The official transcript of that Crawford meeting is filled with unctuous praise for the president, punctuated by vague talk of all the "conservation" initiatives the hunters were seeking. (There are no cold-hearted killers among sport hunters anymore – only really passionate "conservationists.") The president seems uneasy with his guests, and if he looked into Safari Club a little more he'd know why. They are arrogant, merciless people who have no business sitting down with the president of the United States, much less shaping, as they do, the environmental policies of the administration."

Romney's Management
White Salamander, your concern for the working class is admirable. I don't think anyone wants to see people losing viable jobs or be oppressed in their wages. However, in attempting to make Romney look bad notwithstanding his resounding successes with Dominoes, Staples etc I do think you are missing or misinterpreting an important point in Romney's record.

Aa certain amount of displacement is expected because you can't legislate/force a company's success. Romney's Bain Capital is one of the best at buyouts and turnarounds but even they with their focus on data don't always get it right. The market decides the product is bad or they get bad management or hidden situations not picked up in due diligence which result in fines in the companies they buy.

Fortunately, a bad situation maybe like Ampad, Damon can be shut down and assets and people set loose to be returned to productivity, kind of an organic process with dead stuff returning to the soil to grow fresh plants (I'm appealing to the Green in you).

That's conservative realism. Displacements are challenging but they are ultimately necessary for a healthy economy.

Companies like Bain that help us through this kind of process are doing a valuable service. They are not "looting" just because they get a fee. They are doing hard work. Please understand.
Bensonally writes: Friday, December, 12, 2008 3:34 PM
Winter Olympics
White Salamander, your uncharitable characterization of the Winter Olympics and Romney's church is unAmerican, wildly inaccurate and does you no credit. Very few would attempt to paint the Latter Day Saints the way you do. They are quintessentially American. And, of any group, they are probably the least likely to be involved in wrongdoing.

Everyone knows Romney saved the Olympics from scandal. He didn't cause it and neither did the Latter Day Saint Church.
Bensonally writes: Friday, December, 12, 2008 4:08 PM
Winter Olympics - Cont'd
Very few cities get the Olympics on their first attempt. The Latter Day Saint Church also goes to great lengths to stay out of politics. (They do make statements where they believe moral issues are at stake.)

Though influential, it's a pretty big stretch to say the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints "controls" Utah. Although I don't live there I am aware an outspoken fellow (who happens to be viewed as being almost rabidly anti-conservative) takes on the Latter Day Saint Church all the time has been or was Mayor in SLC for a long time. (There are plenty of liberals and conservatives who are members in good standing.)

The record shows they supported the City's effort but did not run the bidding process or appoint or direct those who ran it. The status of those people in the LDS Church even before the bid was also questionable. If the allegations are true, my understanding of Latter Day Saint policies and practices is they also would likely not have been able to remain members.

it's not a fresh face thing with me ,i don't believe that he is a conservative at heart .i think he is much closer to obama than reagan ,if the majority of the republican turns to the left romney will go right along ,his record of flip flops leads me to believe he is nothing more than an oportunist with no strong core values .this of course is his political life not his personel life

White Salamander, Let's be fair
All of the allegations of corruption at the olympics occured before Romney was involved.

By all accounts the olympics are one asset to add to Romney's reputation, not an albatross to be hung around his neck.

I don't know if Wikipedia is the best source to use anyway.

White Salamander seems to be a know-it-all that does not know it all.
