McCain Wants Debate Postponed
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:13 PM
Update:  "The debate is on," a senior Obama campaign official told ABC News.

John McCain wants to postpone the debate and focus on the economy.

From Fox:

"John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said."

Developing ...

This seems to me to be a very politically sagacious move.  It shows McCain is putting the economy before politics and is putting his Senatorial duties before politics.  By calling for this unilaterally, McCain is demonstrating bold and strong leadership -- and is once again defining the "debate".

This may also serve to sort of recalibrate the political mood, which has been decidedly bad for McCain since the economic news broke ...

Regardless of what Obama wants to do, McCain should not, at this point -- having made this statement, show up on Friday.

Interesting proposal
It does make sense, both McCain and Obama are Senators and probably should focus on this and worry about the campaign next week.

You know the MSM will take it as grandstanding, but we will see.

King Liberal and Obamalot
King Liberal, you are just making Jeff Goldstein's argument below.

Protein Wisdom reports:

As I noted in an update last evening would almost certainly be the case, the media today is pushing the story that the firm owned by McCain’s campaign manager, Rick Davis, lobbied for Freddie and Fannie Mac — all while continuing to ignore exploring, at any length, Sen Barack Obama’s actual ties to those closely related to the current economic meltdown. Not only that, but the Davis-as-tied-to-crisis story is disputed by the McCain campaign — which alleges that the NYT has reported in bad faith, and that public records back up the campaign’s claims that Mr Davis cut ties to his firm in 2006, and that he never lobbied Freddie or Fannie Mac (and in fact, hasn’t been a registered lobbyist since 2005).

All of which, I suppose, is not surprising; after all, the media seems to think that the Sen from Illinois is running against everyone but Senator McCain, from the Gov. of Alaska to a campaign manager, and so their function has been to try to dirty them and hope that as the stories accrue, the public is left with a certain impression crafted by their reporting, while the facts that undercut this impression will ultimately only be “corrected” in the back pages of the paper, if at all.

Writing legislation IS McCain's job. It would be great of Obama to show up anyway. No one would watch. McCain could then say that while he was working on a fix for the problem that Democrats caused Obama was trying to get face time on TV.

Step away from the teleprompter...

Senator Obama, suspend your campaign, postpone your debate prep, stop "formulating your response", and put your country first.

It matters little "who called who first" -- lots of politicians say we need to "do something" -- others actually take action. McCain is clearly ready to act.

Way to lead, Senator McCain!

Too funny
First of all, Obama initiated the idea of a joint statement by the 2 candidates and it looks like McCain preempted it by taking credit for it. So much for the straight talk express. Secondly, if President Bush has time to speak to the country tonight, certainly John McCain can find sometime Friday night -- unless you are claiming that Bush is putting politics before country. Finally, what exactly has changed in the last 48 hours that would cause McCain to suspend his campaign other than the Fox and WP polls showing McCain way behind Obama all of a sudden?

Kind of the opposite of the Bob Dole plan: eschewing the presidential campaign for a few days to take on Senatorial duties. The American people, unfortunately, might see it as a cop-out. But McCain is once again putting the good of the country ahead of his personal ambitions.

I'm glad we agree here. The thing is, I believe it and you don't. You see, the mortgage industry is not the economy, it is just one piece of it. It was a piece of the economy that was running smoothly until the democrats decided to regulate it off balance. If the democrats do not make further foolish law to make the matter worse the economy will be fine, in the short and the long run. If the democrats screw it up (which they will, probably) the economy will take it in the chin but will recover due it's overall soundness (barring further stupidity of the democrats).

Obama First vs. Country First McCain
This is an example of what the country can expect from each candidate if they win the election.
Obama First – Talking on the phone to people about the economy while continuing his ads and preparing for a debate that he hopes his opponent doesn’t show up for. Obama is very hopeful that the debate will become a speech that he reads from a teleprompter that is written by a brilliant speech writer, since he isn’t good at answering questions. Obama with his over inflated ego wants to be petty and argue about who did what first. He is paid to be in Washington and vote on issues – guess he is afraid a vote of present will not look good in this situation.
Country First McCain – Is going to Washington to do his job, the job he is paid to do, and putting the country ahead of running election ads and a debate. Proving as he did when he said, “I’ld rather lose an election than a war” that the country that he loves, that he fought for, that he almost died for comes first.

Here's a thought..Sarah and Biden in MI
why not have Sarah Palin offer to allow Obama go with Mc Cain to Washington to help hammer out a deal to save the economy while she and Biden meet in Mississippi to debate the foreign policy issues, or even change it to the economy if they want?

We have been hearing where McCain and Obama both stand on all the issues for nearly two years now anyway, and I don't think either of them could say anything new on any subject. But, it would be a great opportunity for Biden and Palin to let the people of this country know where they each stand on either subject.

Obama just wants to wriggle out of going back to Washington to do his job because he is so enamored with the thought of becoming President of the US he can't be bothered with anything else, not even the economy woes which could very well trun into a depression before our very eyes - sooner rather than later.

BTW, I am old enough for bi-focals. ,_,

I think they SHOULD send Palin
Or Romney or another of McCain's advisers.

But if McCain is in DC trying to fix the problem, don't let Obama show up alone - have a McCain surrogate (Palin would make the most sense) show up to the debate.

You know the Town Hall demo, that's why you made the bifocals comment? So if you know the demographics of TH folks, who do you work for?

I don't belong to any demographic category. Neither do my father, mother, or sister.

Here is your ridiculous diatribe, and my response to each point:

1. Do you want something?
Julie responds--yes, I want accountable government.

2. Yes you are boring.
Julie responds--really? If I'm so boring, why don't you just ignore me?

3. Yes you belong to a demo and you know what it is. Don't be so coy.
Julie responds: I'm not being coy. You haven't asked for my demographics. Want 'em? Probably not, because they wouldn't fit your agenda

4. See #2.

Julie responds: See response to #2.

5. If you want 20 barf bags for a nickle I can "hook you up." Paddy might be able to help you as well.

Julie responds: What?

6. I have less and less time for the intellectually dishonest on this board. You're earlier commnet discarding the events of the day because they didn't fit your myopic view discredits you. I do not hold that against you however. sometime sit is hard to see things as they evolve in real time.

Julie responds: Again, what? Myopic view? Intellectually dishonest? I SO glad you hold nothing against me, brother, I'm not the one who needs to be discredited.

7. Do you like Ice cream? How about kool aid?
Julie responds: Don't care for either, thanks.

8. Screwtape said earlier that Obama "lied" during his press conference about being in touch with McCain, as it seems you two are close if you can get him to produce his evidence I would be much obliged.
Julie responds: I am not "close" with Screwtape. I don't even know him/her. But Screwtape has a lot of valuable comments.

9. Remember there is no such thing as a dumb question.
Julie responds: Yes there is. Whoever coined that phrase was an idiot. Dumb questions are rampant!

10. And now madam, I bid you good night.
Julie Responds: I bid you good night, too. But isn't a bit silly for you to be polite to someone you just called "boring"? Please, what a farce.

Unregulated Greed Fails
Reading the posts on this site helped remind me why I try to keep away from right wing blogs. They are nothing but republican talking points repeated ad nausium with name calling and ranting thrown in for good measure.

In all the blather on this site not once is it noted that this crisis on Wall Street is proof possitive of the failure of neo-conservative theories regarding market deregulation. Deregulation of the markets is the reason that this has happened to our economy, and as a life long proponent of deregulation John McCain is one of the last people I want handling this crisis.

What Obama should have said to McCain when he suggested his bi-partisan work weekend is, "Thanks John, but you are part of the problem, so please sit this one out while the Democrats clean up this Republican mess."
continuum writes: Wednesday, September, 24, 2008 9:18 PM
McCain Runs Away From Debate
Amazing.

As of yesterday, McCain admits that he hadn't even bothered to read the proposed legislation.

As of last night, he was giving interviews to Katie Couric.

McCain is hiding his own fear of being face-to-face with Obama.

The most recent poll shows that most Americans see McCain's actions as a desperate political stunt.

McCain read the most recent polls and panicked.

What a pair. An air head from Alaska and a bumbling conceited hothead from Arizona.

Surely, the Republicans could have done a whole lot better.

DUMP PALIN
get Romney on that ticket - FAST. Find some graceful way, or tell the country "I forgot to vet her...and now I find I can't have her on the ticket with this economy." Dang.
Jack writes: Wednesday, September, 24, 2008 10:25 PM
Can't have it both ways
After 26 years of pushing for deregulation McCain has suddenly seen the light and is for responsible government oversight? I don't think so. You right wingers can't have it both ways. If you want no government oversight of the free market then there can be no government bailout of the free market. No more privatizing of the profits and socializing the losses. Again, NO MORE PRIVATIZING THE PROFITS AND SOCIALIZING THE LOSSES. That's what McCain and Bush are doing, giving Americans' hard earned tax dollars to the mega wealthy after they ripped us all off.

I've had enough of this BS. The same people who are McCain's closest economic advisors are also the criminals who engineered the deregulated market that has led to this crisis. It sort of reminds me of living in Venezuala, where the police where so corrupt that they would burgularize your home, and when you reported the break in, would sell you your stuff back for a tidy profit. It was bad but this is worse because this is happening in my country. It is time to call these scumbags out for their lies and it's time for change.
Lady Liberty writes: Wednesday, September, 24, 2008 11:41 PM
Crises do reveal character, don't they.
Does Senator Obama plan to vote "present" on this life/death issue for the country...that is, while he's preening before his presidential seal and talking to himself?

Obama: Missing In Action

I applaud McCain's decision to temporarily suspend his campaign and stay in Washington until Congress can work out a bailout plan! On the other hand, you have Obama, who refuses to do likewise, saying, "If they need me, they can call me...you can talk to my staff..." Presidential campaigning, politiking, debating etc., are all fine and well. But in a time of crisis, one has to put aside one's own self-interest (even for a day or two) for the good of the country. In a time of crisis, this country needs bold leadership. It's obvious to me that Obama isn't that leader!

why dont they change the topic to the economy,

HIDING FROM THE PRESS AGAIN!

Boy his lack of intellect really shows.

What a poor multi tasker he is.

So if he is president and he has to go to the bathroom when the red phone rings is he going to say wait until I finish what I'm doing first?

Both democrats and republicans said they do not need him to take credit for the work that they have already done on the rescue plan.

The University of Mississippi has spent $5,000,000 preparing for this debate and McCain is telling them he has something else to do.

This 60 year old white republican grandmother from Arizona has had enough of John McCain who has spent 26 years doing nothing for Arizona. What would he do for America? The same Nothing, Zero, Nada.

Emperor Obama vs Servant McCain
I would have been greatly impressed with Obama and credited him with courage and leadership if he would have had the integrity to show up and do the job he is currently being paid for without having to be asked by the president to participate. Both Senators had the option to resign their seats to run for president. They both declined but only one is willing to honor his commitment to the people to continue to represent their interests at such a critical time. Obama acts more and more like an Emperor defined as "the male sovereign or supreme ruler of an empire".

but didn't the left, the libs, the dems and the press jump all into GWB face when he was not arriving onto New Awlins as katrina(the storm of the century)was pulling out? But osmama obama gets away with this ain't so bad call me if you need me. I'm also pretty sure that his response is about the same as nagin and blanco gave when katrina was still way out in the gulf.

McCain is laughable...
...at least he's got that much going for him. Unfortunately that's all he's got going anymore. This latest gimmick he tossed out there shows just how panicked he is, and how he is completely out of answers, solutions, and even his old standby, lies. He's given up!

Says A LOT about what kind of president he would make - a big fat, YELLOW one. What happened to this once-war-hero??? Very sad indeed to see such a man crumble into a pathetic, cowardly shell of his former self. Oh, well, better that we find out now before he's in the Oval Office facing a huge crisis...then calls for a "time out" in order to get his facilities in order.

Obviously the man is too old, too senile, and too much of a risk to be put in office. He's pretty much said so himself with this latest frightened-child reaction.
