Obama's Books Say He Attended "Muslim School"
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 4:15 PM

I was watching Morning Joe today, and someone (I don't recall if it was Mika or Joe, or whom ...) was lamenting the fact that polling shows us that 39 percent of Americans (read yokels) mistakenly believe Obama attended a Muslim school in Indonesia, etc.

Jonathan Alter of Newsweek similarly mocks the notion, writing:
His stepfather sent him to a Muslim school.
False. When Obama lived in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country, his mother and stepfather sent him for a time to a Catholic school, and for a time to an Indonesian public elementary school, where he had a class in Islamic studies (as required by the state). When CNN and other news organizations investigated whether this was a "madrassa" (religious school), the answer was a clear "no." Girls did not have to cover their heads, prayers were not required, students came from many different religious backgrounds and the school was recognizably "public."
The only problem is that this contradicts Obama's own words ...

On page 154 of "Dreams From My Father," Obama writes:

"In Indonesia, I had spent two years at a Muslim school, two years at a Catholic school.  In the Muslim school, the teacher wrote to tell my mother that I made faces during the Koranic studies."
And on page 204 of "The Audacity of Hope," Obama has a slightly different recollection, writing:

"During the five years that we would live with my stepfather in Indonesia, I was sent first to a neighborhood Catholic school and then to a predominantly Muslim school."

(Okay, so this time he refers to the school with the qualifier "predominantly" ... but the words "Muslim school" are Obama's -- not mine.  And if the quote from "Dreams From My Father" is correct, this "predominantly" Muslim school required "Koranic studies" -- a notion that Jonathan Alter acknowledges was part of the law).

HERE'S MY POINT:  If there is confusion about whether or not Obama attended a Muslim school, it does not come from ignorant people ... rather, it comes from people who actually took the time to read his books -- and believe him...

As such, you could argue that the biggest source of the Muslim rumors is Obama himself.  He's the one who wrote and published the rumors -- not some right-wing cabal.

Why is this important?  The liberals who are vigorously trying to "set the record straight" act as if conservatives are the ones who pulled this out of thin air in order to fool a bunch of rednecks living in places where one must cling to guns and religion.

But Obama's own book says he attended the Muslim school.  So if there is confusion, I pretty much have to think that he is to blame.  And along those same lines, let me also point out it was a liberal magazine -- not a conservative one -- who published the controversial cartoon cover that has been derided as offensive.

Note:  It really doesn't matter whether or not Obama attended a Muslim school.  What does matter is whether or not he is telling the truth.  And I think it is also important to note that this rumor was not started by conservative skullduggery, but by Obama's own writings ...

EXACTLY!!
Yes, he went to a Muslim school. That in itself is not a factor to me.

What IS a factor is that he's lying about going to a Muslim school, and saying it's off limits to even bring up the subject.

Stay tuned for him to flip flop in this issue as well, then blame it on the American people for being too dumb to understand.

not much substance here
I'm not trying to play defense, it's just that these are such stupid complaints.

The quote "... I was sent first to a neighborhood Catholic school and then to a predominantly Muslim school."

it just sounds as though he was describing the makeup of the school as "muslim" not the school itself.

the first quote is more ambiguous, but I think it would make sense to describe it as such.
In your first quoted paragraph you note that he had a class in Islamic studies which is clearly the class he is describing. I would think that since most likely virtually every student at the public school was muslim one would describe it as a "muslim" school, especially when speaking in comparison to a catholic school which would have had a very different makeup. I for one understand that when writing about the school he probably found it easier to paint the picture in his readers mind by saying it was a predominately muslim or muslim school rather than say he went to an "Indonesian public school which while generally secular did involve an Islamic studies class and had mainly muslim students."

most people understand the difference between small differences, and meaningful misrepresentations and lies.

I saw that too Matt!
And it was Andrea Mitchell who said it. My response was "what??" Because I remember watching a documentary on Obama done by MSNBC itself where they said he attended a madrassas but emphasized that christian students attended there too. I was also upset at Andrea for once again inferring that the only reason why 26% of people who believe he is muslim feel that way because they are racist. Basically she said that people in WV and PA think there is something exotic about Obama and don't feel comfortable with him. She can't figure it out therefore it must be racial. UGGGH!! How about giving people some credit and stop jumping to conclusions about them based on where they live. This PA resident and the ones I know don't feel comfortable with Obama because we aren't charmed by his rhetoric and he seems too good to be true. And as recent events have proven, he is!

The same people
who say BHO never attended a Muslim School are the same who say that Black Liberation Theology as taught in Trinty United is a traditional Christian Faith. Sorry but neither is true.

Brob,

it is neither. Obama is most likely a communist. That would account for his being able to see human beings as objects to be used for his own gratification. For example, refusing to support legislation that would protect babies born alive from being murdered through neglect. No Christian or Muslim would support such a thing. Also, most people make their fundamental intellectual choices when they are teenagers. That is the period during Obama's life when an avowed communist was his mentor.

I do not think he is a Muslim. He fully intends to use Islam to advance his own interests. Everything about him shouts communist.
John writes: Tuesday, July, 15, 2008 5:10 PM
Obama - set the record straight?

It's a very simple question, Mr Obama. Did you or did you not attend a muslim school when living in Indonesia?

Brob and the howling looney-left seem to be deathly afraid of seeking FACTS. I wonder why?
eddie too writes: Tuesday, July, 15, 2008 5:12 PM
What do you think Obama wants this

for? Taken from a Joseph Farah column on WND.com:

"For several days now, WND has been hounding Barack Obama's campaign about a statement he made July 2 in Colorado Springs – a statement that blew my mind, one that has had me scratching my head ever since.

In talking about his plans to double the size of the Peace Corps and nearly quadruple the size of AmeriCorps and the size of the nation's military services, he made this rather shocking (and chilling) pledge: "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.""

eddie too writes: Tuesday, July, 15, 2008 5:42 PM
Brob,

which Obama will romp? Will it be the muslim Obama or the Black Liberation theology Obama or the communist Obama. He is going to have to convince the voters of which of those three he is if he is to build a significant majority. Throwing all of these irons in the fire is just going to confuse the voters. Obama needs to choose between his blackness, his muslimness and his communistness if he is going to build a winning coalition.

The Book and the Plan
The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream
is the second book written by US Senator Barack Obama. It was the number three bestseller on The New York Times nonfiction list as of October 2006. The book represents Obama's personal manifesto for his 2008 campaign for the presidency.

A quote for your review from his book.

“I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

James H. Cone

Aspects of Cone's theology and words have been the subject of controversy in the political context of the 2008 Presidential campaign, as Barack Obama's pastor Jeremiah Wright noted that he had been inspired by Cone's theology. Some scholars of black theology have noted that the controversial quotes do not necessarily represent black theology as it is currently practiced or the views of people like Wright who practice it. Cone has responded to the controversy by noting that he was generally writing about white churches that did nothing to oppose slavery and segregation and not about white people as individuals.
Hoover Institute fellow Stanley Kurtz, in a political commentary in National Review, wrote that "Cone defines it as "complete emancipation of black people from white oppression by whatever means black people deem necessary." For Cone, the deeply racist structure of American society leaves blacks with no alternative but radical transformation or social withdrawal. So-called Christianity, as commonly practiced in the United States, is actually the racist Antichrist. "Theologically," Cone affirms, "Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man 'the devil.'" The false Christianity of the white-devil oppressor must be replaced by an authentic Christianity fully identified with the poor and oppressed."

Why is it unreasonable to identify Obama with Islam teachings and Black Theology?

Is Obama A Moslim
I've worked with a number of Moslims over the years from the Middle East and Africa. I once asked on of my African Moslim friends what a Muslim was and he said he didn't know. He said he was a Moslim. He had no idea what a Muslim was and had not heard the term until he came to the United States.

Anyway, it's my understanding that the male offstpring of Moslims is a considered a Moslim by other Moslims whether he practices the religion or not. This does not apply to the female offspring of Moslim parents. If the male offspring of Moslim parents turns away from Islam then he is considered to be an enemy of Islam.

I do not profess to be an expert on Islam--in fact, I know very little about it--so take this for what it's worth.

"You cons need to figure out what your story is and stick with it. Either Obama is under the sway of left-wing Christian liberation theology, or he is a secret Muslim. He can't be both. Likewise, either he is an effete elitist snob, or he is a radical Black nationalist. He can't be both."

In each case, why can't he be both. From what I've seen TUCC surely isn't Christian--and his universalist interpretation of Christianity marks him as something other than Christian.

But the real problem these days with Obama is that it's too difficult to determine what he actually believes. Just today, I read that he's pushing a story that he "really" didn't attend TUCC all that much after the birth of his first child.

Sigh. All that aside, I think it's hilarious that his campaign is denying that he attended Muslim schools when he reports it in his two books. Was that the fault of some staffer who incorrectly filled out a questionnaire for him? Was it the fault of an editor who was embellishing the books? Or are those simply not the books that he once knew?

He's a lying sack.

Let me stick to this story then,
bjob, that polling in this election cycle for POTUS, will never be correct. "White fright" is the reason. White's don't want to appear to be "racist" so they have and will continue to lie to the pollsters. This "white fright" will cause obambi to poll 7 to 10 points to high. In the privacy of the voting booth, Jeremiah Wright; Louis Farrakhan; Bill Ayers; Bernie Dorhn; Father flagrant; Raila Odinga; Larry Sinclair; Michelle Obambi; Tony Rezko; Betty Saltzman; Ali Abunimah; Cynthia Miller; Jennifer Mason; Edward Said; undivided divided Jerusalem; against and for the 2nd Amendment; for and against and for FISA; it's okay to murder a baby outside the womb, if, first you had been trying to kill it in the womb; out of Iraq in 16 months, will stay as long as necessary, out of Iraq immediately; no lapel pin a lapel pin no lapel pin; isn't Hussein a muslim name; both fathers were muslim; thin resume; community organizer, 3 years as a state representative, 3 years as a Senator and then the democrat nomination; a tartuffe; a Luo; "typical white person"; the muslim call to prayer "is the prettist sound on earth in the morning"; mengaji; `"inflexible Jews", will all be remembered and a no vote for obambi will be registered and not once will obambi's half whiteness be thought of, no not once.

This proves
beyond a doubt, that Obama DID NOT have a teleprompter while writing those books. With the teleprompter, there would be no confusion. By the way, I went to a Catholic High School. A Jesuit one, at that. It means that not only are most of the students Catholic, but you learn Catholic teaching in a class every year, have Catholic masses, have religious retreats and student orgs, and have many priests as teachers. I understand the thought that maybe Obama meant most of the students were Muslim or Catholic, but that defies what most everyone will think of when they hear "Catholic school." Maybe he's just a poor writer. In any event, I could care less what religion he is. It's his doubling of the capital gains tax that scares me. Whatever school he went to, they didn't teach basic economics.

Biographical details
Obama's not denying he attended a predominantly Muslim school for a few years. It's in his books. Where the confusion arises is his supporters' denials that he attended a Madrassa school. That's part of the nasty smear campaign. A different kettle of fish. Obama's campaign needs to sort it out. A documentary is being produced for the Dem convention which I hope will clarify the matter.

Stick with the big picture. Obama and the progressives want to install a European model of government in America. If you prefer that, vote for Obama.

If you prefer the American model of government, vote for McCain.

If you don't know the difference, start your research now.

Obama's past

Would someone please tell me who Obama is? The best I could find is the web site "howstuffworks". I am left with questions. Who is his Mother, why did she move to Indonesia, who was her second husband, why did she send her son back to Hawaii live with her parents? How long was it before his self described "lonely witness for secular humanism" mother returned to Hawaii? How was Obama's father able to go from the university of Hawaii to Harvard? When did he, if ever live in the mid-west? Who paid for his schooling at Occidental College and Columbia University? Where are his half brothers and sisters? He graduated for Columbia in 1983 then moved to Chicago in 1985,what did he do in those two years? Then he work for non profit groups(who are they?)until going to Harvard in 1988. Who paid? In 1992 he was working at a law firm and met his wife. He also was a lecturer at the University law school. He was a state senator then in 2004 a US senator. Where in this time frame was the 20 years of community service?

This guy is a ghost. Who is going to tell us about him?
Warrior writes: Wednesday, July, 16, 2008 7:57 PM
Obama The Muslim
In any Muslim family the Father determines the religion of the family. Obama's biological father is a Muslim, hence his son is a Muslim. Obama has no say in the Muslim world , he is a Muslim. If he elects to become a Christian or any other religion, he is guilty of apostasy a crime which may be punishable by death. When Obama lived in Indonesia, he went to the Muslim school for 2 years and a Catholic school for 2 years. There are 2 important facts about Indonesia and Obama's Muslim faith. First, Obama transferred from the Catholic school to the Muslim school. This was done by choice, Obama could have remained in the Catholic school. Second, Obama was registered in both schools as a Muslim by his parents. This proves his Mother and step-Father both considered him a Muslim and the record on that fact is clear. There are 1.2 billion Muslims in this world and every one of them consider/believe Obama is a Muslim. Obama knows all this but he is trying to divert, hide, deny his true faith as he seeks the office of POTUS--this subterfuge is being supported in toto by the Left wing press and his Communist handlers. Obama is a fraud and so is the Leadership of the Democrat Party.
Warrior writes: Wednesday, July, 16, 2008 8:16 PM
Obama's Christianity
This is my opinion and nothing more. Anyone reading it is free to disagree. The Trinity United Church of Christ is not a religious institution, it is a political indoctrination center. Muslim Medrassa's are mirror images of this church--they are fake churches/Mosques that function as political indoctrination centers and the "church" mantra is being used as a shield from which certain advantages are derived, such as, tax breaks, donations, credibility, and free access to young people for indoctrination. The Trinity United Church of Christ is a festering social cancer oozing political slime in one of America's largest cities. It should be denounced and ostracized by all other true Christian Churches. Obama likes his membership in this non-church because I am convinced Obama believes and knows he is not violating Sharia Law and is not guilty of apostasy by attending it. Obama remains a Muslim in disguise.
