Parsing the CPAC Straw Poll
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:06 PM

The CPAC Straw Poll results are in, and the campaigns have already started spinning the results. Here are three things to keep in mind:

1. Some people will tell you that Mitt Romney didn't deserve to win (because he bussed in College Republicans to vote for him).  That's like saying George W. Bush didn't deserve to win because he raised more money than his opponent.  Romney's ability to organize, inspire, and transport college students to the conference is precisely why he did deserve to win! A campaign that has the organizational ability to bus in college students has the organizational ability to do a lot of other things, too. The rules allow for it, so what's wrong with Romney doing what he has to do (within the rules) to win?

2. Some people will tell you that Rudy was the biggest winner of the day. I think he did well, but I also think he greatly benefited from McCain's failure to show. In a sense, a vote for Rudy was a protest vote against McCain. At the very least, people could say: "I don't agree with him on every issue, and he knows it, but he at least had the guts to come talk to us." My guess is that some conservatives rewarded Rudy (for showing up) with their vote.  But rewarding someone with a straw poll vote, and voting for him (for real) is a different story.  I don't want to take anything away from his accomplishment -- coming into this audience and taking second place is a big step.  Still, John  McCain came in second last year, and wasn't able to translate that into conservative support.  Will Rudy's second-place finish yield him better results?  That is the huge question of the day.

3. Some people are saying that Jim Gilmore did poorly because voters rejected the tone of his speech. Likewise, some bloggers are surprised that Newt (a conservative icon) didn't perform as well as Rudy.  While it is true that neither Gilmore nor Newt Gingrich performed as well as they might have, it would be wrong to conclude that either performance had anything to do with their speeches. The vast majority of voters cast their votes on Thursday or Friday, while Newt and Gilmore didn't speak until Saturday.

Philip Klein of The American Spectator has a good summary, as well.

GWB on use of a crude yiddish word
Using an obscene yiddish word to describe a candidate is for KOS Kids. Townhall folks do not appreciate it like Huffington Post and KOS kids do. Are you really a KOS Kid in desguise?

A mink is a weasel with nicer hair.
Saying that Romney proved his virtue by out weaseling the other weasels may sell with politicos, but it's not going to translate well in a general election. While refreshingly honest by admitting that the current election process is a game and a scam.

Hey I Have an Idea!!
How about we actually get someone qualified??!!

Not a flavor of the month. Or a junior Senator without a record, who talks a good talk. How about experience?? When are we going to expect more from our President? How can Senators who already have a job many people in their states are counting on them to do run for another job??? Are they going to pay back their respective states for their campaigning time??

There is one guy out their with the EXPERIENCE and the INTELLECT to run this country the way it should be. His name is Gingrich.

Let me clarify my concern with your statement. Clearly those straw pollers saw something in Romney that impressed them. I suspect that he has a very commanding presents and he is very much a leader. So for you to call him a "schmuck" is offensive. Remember Ronald Reagans eleventh commandment. Thou shalt not speak evil of a fellow republican. I agree that Romney isn't as conservative as I would like him to be. And you are very correct in your concern about the second amendment. It truely is a belweather principle. I agree that there are at least two kinds of republicans. I call them conservatives and country club (you call them rockefeller republicans. I would prefer that you state your case without the name calling. It will make you sound much better and will be more convincing.

His response was an oxymoron. What part of "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED" does he and 20% of CPAC not understand? This is just one issue, albeit a big one, but it just goes to show the absolute fraud that these so called conservatives are, just give them a haircut that can give a good speech, put the Bush water carriers in his corner and these idiots will vote for a liberal. It is really past time that we differentiate the Republicans from the Conservatives. I am a conservative, VA Patriot is a conservative, Mitt Romney is not, George Bush is not, and anyone who voted for Rudy or Romney is not.

An I call on everyone to look at ratings like the NRA, ACU, and others. Examine the ratings, see what Conservative Republicans that voted against those bills were saying and you will find that bills such as mandatory gunlocks, funding for the UN, and even budget approval is considered "conservative". Let the Big Government Republicans have their party, but they deserved to be sued for false advertising with their loose use of the term "conservative". In a primary season these people, the Rockefeller Republicans are the enemy, they are the largest threat to Conservatism since they are the enemy within.

I guess all those straw poll voters must be stupid because they disagree with you.
