This flier, created by an anti-McCain group called Vietnam Veterans Against McCain, has been making its way into the hands of editors of South Carolina newspapers:
Here's the back of the flier ... essentially they are arguing that McCain betrayed his country. ... Or, more specifically, that he gave the Vietnamese information about U.S. flight paths.
First Read reports the group is headed by Jerry Kiley, who also ran a similar effort against John Kerry in 2004.
The Fix reports on McCain's efforts to fight back:
Even before the Michigan primary voting ends, surrogates for Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) organized a conference call with reporters to push back against an incendiary flier that was passed out to members of the South Carolina media today.
The flier, which came from a group called "Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain" and attacked the Arizona Senator's time spent as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, was roundly condemned by a group of McCain supporters that including former P.O.W. Orson Swindle as well as South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell and state Attorney General Henry McMaster.
... It should be noted that McCain, Huckabee, and Romney are all reporting these sorts of nasty attacks in the state. Remembering what happening to him in 2000, McCain has organized what he calls a "Truth Squad" to fend-off these accusations. Right now, McCain and Huckabee are running neck-and-neck in the Palmetto state. This will likely continue to be a nasty race ...

So, Vietnam Veterans Against McCain? Something like Swift Boat Veterans Against Kerry? Well, well. As near as I can tell, McCain, of all the major GOP candidates this time, represents the war-mongering ambitions of the Republican Party, the same element that trashed Kerry's reputation. And now this development. It seems that what goes around comes around.
Isn't there some maxim in science fiction that if you build a monster it might turn around and kill you? |

OH give us a break: NO ONE attacks McCains patriotism: We respect and honor John the war hero as we respect and honor the millions of war heroes:
WHAT Makes McCain UNACCEPTABLE is the 25 years of straight talk and talk and talk and talk and all talk and all done NOTHING:
Amnesty (that pro illegals act) Anti US citizen
no tax breaks Massive tax increase on energy flip flop on law of sea treat flip flop on dream act zero achievement on Energy policy zero achievement on Vetrans benefits
hostility towards the success of innovation, corporate America, achievement, risk reward, success, ambition and reward for advanced study: His "entitlement" campaign is a principle of 3rd world countries:
Burdensome regulation after regulation his Kill success syndrome that he champions:
Frankly he told the medical industry to shove it: and No doubt the medical industry and corporate America will tell McCain to shove it and build their plants and offices in a country that welcomes success, achievement, ambition:

Of all the legitimate reasons to not support McCain, who would be dumb enough to go after his time as a POW? He went through hell for his country and could have easily died. Whether or not he held up perfectly or not should have ZERO bearing on his candidacy. If this gets tied to anyone, they are toast. |
|
.. with hambones.
I don't like McCain as my Senator and I certainly will never vote for him for POTUS.
But this seems over the top to me. There are literally hundreds of reasons to not vote for McCain. His service and obvious sacrafices to his country are not any of those reasons.
There is a huge difference between faking injury (Kerry) and being tortured (McCain). |

Real Americans do not attack vets bottom line! |
|
I think McCain is a hack and a phony in politics, but this is over the line. I read a book years ago called Seven Years in Hanoi about a POW in the Hanoi Hilton.
McCain's time as a POW doesn't make him a qualified candidate, but it makes him one hell of an American. The flyer is sick, sick, sick.
I don't have a lot of positive things to say about McCain, but I can honestly say thanks for your service and sacrifice and I think our vets deserve better. |

I am not a McCain supporter but this attack could make me one. I think attacks like these cannot possibly turn any thinking person against McCain. It can only help him with a backlash vote. STUPID STUPID STUPID. Someone has a personal grudge. But sometimes people are defined by their enemies. |
|
We just don't go there. Even if some of the stuff were true, I have no desire to be a POW and anyone who survived it deserves some respect.
Let's all agree not to go there on McCain. Closed book and respect from me.
However, lets all agree that we can slam him on his politics!

Has anyone else noticed all the "conservative" talking heads out lately going over their agreed upon talking points against McCain. Hannity, Limbaugh, Santorum(?). Same complaints from all, even given in the same order. And now this... I think the holier than thou republicans are attacking McCain again. The California republican party is not allowing independants and decline-to-state voters to vote for their candidates. They do not want moderate republicans elected to office. They hate Arnold and they hate McCain. They hate candidates who choose to think for themselves, candidates who do not comply with their agreed upon agenda. Something stinks in the republican party. As for this flyer...it is absolutely disgusting and shameful. It almost brought me to tears. But it has brought me to get out my checkbook and send more money to John McCain. You may not want to hear the truth, but you will from McCain. |
|
Why do you think almost every conservative is against McCain (or would be against Arnold for that matter)? It is because they have very non-conservative agendas. They have a few parts of conservativism, but are largely liberal.
The pundits are not defining John McCain, his record is. |

I followed the Swift Boat controversy very carefully. The mainstream media has successfully implanted the notion that Kerry was a victim of a vicious smear - "swiftboating" is now a verb. But where there was smoke, there certainly was fire. Kerry never sued, nor released his records, did he? Why is everyone so quick to drape the mantel of patriotism over McCain? What accounts for his bitter and successful battles over the years to keep POW/MIA records classified? |
