Lame: NYT Suggests McCain Might Not Even Be Qualified to Run For President

Why? Because he was born on a military installation outside the United States while his father was serving there (in the Panama Canal Zone):
The phrase “natural born” was in early drafts of the Constitution. Scholars say notes of the Constitutional Convention give away little of the intent of the framers. Its origin may be traced to a letter from John Jay to George Washington, with Jay suggesting that to prevent foreigners from becoming commander in chief, the Constitution needed to “declare expressly” that only a natural-born citizen could be president. Ms. Duggin and others who have explored the arcane subject in depth say legal argument and basic fairness may indeed be on the side of Mr. McCain, a longtime member of Congress from Arizona. But multiple experts and scholarly reviews say the issue has never been definitively resolved by either Congress or the Supreme Court. The smears are going to get sillier and sillier. I guess the good news is this is the best they can come up with. Closing quote: “If I were on the Supreme Court, I would decide for John McCain,” Ms. Pryor said in a recent interview. “But it is certainly not a frivolous issue.” Unless you're a Democrat running for President, in which case it would be frivolous indeed! Maybe liberals will start employing the stupid middle-name tactic and refer to him as "John Panamanian McCain" from here on out.

I knew the democrats were afraid of LOOSING to McCain. Given that they are in the process of nominating a candidate whose identity and ideas are HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE. One who finds wearing the USA flag on his suit to be an imposition but wearing a turban costume to be "polite to foreigners". One who argues that the president needs to take extra measures of diplomacy and cut back our military spending. One who is mentored spiritally by a black seperatist Rev. Wright who believes 9/11 was deserved because blacks have had it very bad in the USA. One who has a Luo father, an indonesian step dad and a muslim name. Who is the foreigner? Americans will not have difficulty deciding in November, but in the mean time the democrats can spin it however they want. Tick tock tick tock...come Nov. 8th, Mrs. B. Hussein's research paper that is being kept secret will be released for public review and americans will be glad she is not the first lady! Any predictions what she wrote about? Maybe "black power" and the ship that is supposed to come and destroy all non-blacks???? SERIOUSLY!!!!!! |

They just want you all to defend McCain and anoint him our nominee. Don't you get it??? How gullible are you??? The NYT and the rest of the MSM all want McCain to be our nominee - that's why they're trying to get you to defend him.
The absolute best thing that could ever happen to Obama (or Clinton) is to have McCain be our nominee. The Democrats (aka Liberal Fascists) will then be even more likely to push their majority in Congress to 60 and if Republicans only hold 40 seats or less - there is not a thing we can do to stop any of their Supreme Court appointments, tax increases, defunding of the military, dangerous international treaties, amnesty, fairness doctrines, gun control, Universal Health Care, you name it.
Wake up Conservatives! Why don't you try leading for a change - go on offense by stepping up criticism of McCain and supporting Huckabee for a Brokered Convention? The NYT will be all over Huckabee and defending McCain again in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, your comment is one of those that puts a bad light on conservatives. Voters should have a problem with Barack Obama, but the problem should have nothing to do with: his name, his wearing of native dress while visiting Africa, or his parents. Let's be rationale in our critique of Obama. He's a big government liberal. He thinks government is a magic pill to cure society's ills. Leave the name, the attire, etc. alone. By the way, his wife's thesis was released and it was a snoozer. I'd rather have a Muslim who believes in the Constitution than a Christian who believes in socialism. |

This is a 'no-brainer.' And specifically, since we're talkin' bout the NY Times, "no brain" is an accurate characterization.
At the time of McCain's birth, the Panama Canal Zone was clearly under U.S. jurisdiction. And the reason he was 'born' there, as everyone knows, is that his father was stationed there as an officer in the Navy. Uh, as in, the UNITED STATES Navy.
This is all so kooky...I suppose, then, according to the NY Times, all children born to our military who are stationed abroad...are not U.S. citizens !
I swear, this comes from the editorial board which wants to make every peasant in every corner of the earth a U.S. citizen by virtue of utopian compassion.
This must be what the NY Times means when they say they "support the troops." |

Think about this for a sec. Natural born and canal birth. What a coincidence. |
|
Democrats have reason to worry. Even at this early stage, McCain is doing well against either of the Democratic candidates.
With the exception of a CBS/New York Times poll which, as usual, greatly oversampled Democrats, many polls are showing McCain leading in all the states he needs to win in the Electoral College.
Even in Massachusetts, McCain trails Obama by 2 points. Two points in that liberal bastion?
Some pundits are giving Ohio to the Democrats this time and if it was George Bush running I might agree but not with McCain.
If McCain runs a smart campaign -- he will win in November. The Democrats are slowly waking up to that fact. Expect all sorts of trash to be thrown at McCain including the kitchen sink. The Democrats are going to be mightily incensed when they realize another one is about to escape their grasp and after all that Obamamania, too.
This notion McCain isn't officially a "natural born" citizen is a crock. Does that mean Americans born to soldiers' families in Germany are NOT "natural born" citizens? I'd love to see someone try and put that one over.

Despite the obvious motives of the NYT, this is not an old argument though it may be considered silly. SCOTUS would be required to rule on the meaning of natural born vs. American by blood. Simply being born on territory controlled by the military would not make one natural born. Those of us serving in the military understand this as we all have friends with babies born in Germany who have German birth certificates. A better argument can be made for being born on the grounds of an embassy because that is American soil.
I don't remember all the particulars of this argument, but thanks to the internet, we can all look back at SCOTUS cases from the previous centuries and bore ourselves to death!
We have two choices, vote for McCain or vote for Obama. Sitting at home is not a choice! |
|
And when?
This has not exactly been a state secret.
The only way this gets decided is if someone ambles into court and challenges his right to run. Would his acceptance of federal funds be a trigger for a challenge? Anyone have any thoughts? |

We *can* stay at home and let the GOP get votes from where they've been dancing...
Yeah, we brought the GOP to the dance. True, she's still wearing our class ring around her neck on the chain we gave her.
But! She hasn't really danced with us since 2004. And rather than go to this dance and be a wallflower again, my Naturalized Citizen wife and I will be doing our best to stimulate the local economy by shopping at the local grocery and fixing a quiet dinner at home.
I was (and still am) a fan of Duncan Hunter. I could possibly have "held my nose and voted" for Romney in the General Election. But McAmnesty just keeps dissing conservatives and stepping to the left.
I want to believe; but I just can't... Not after he called my family some of those profane names... |

It seems as though the only Americans in America that are forced to uphold the laws of the land are Black Americans, or off the jail we go. |
|
Where a sitting Senator, Statesman and, American War Hero suddenly becomes an "Anchor Baby" who is not eligible to become POTUS while Juan Valdez can smuggle his pregnant wife (along with coffe cans full of cocaine) across the border and his off-spring IS POTUS material???
How deep does this rabbit hole go anyway?

The funniest thing I found while reading the article is how the National NYT Enquirer only referred to McCain's parents once, and his father was simply "a Navy officer". No mention of the history of his family. Here's a lil help from me thanks to five minutes of internet research:
McCain's grandfather, US Navy Admiral John Sydney McCain?:

McCain's father, US Navy Four Star Admiral John Sydney McCain, Jr:

The Arleigh Burke class US Naval Destroyer USS John S. McCain is named after Senator McCain's father and grandfather:

Sidebar, Sen McCain's great, great grandfather served in the US Civil War.

The New York Times may want to pursue further their literal reading of the founder’s declaration. For example, natural birth, sometimes called an unmedicated birth, is the delivery of a baby without using drugs or surgery. Could it be that the founders intended that all presidents be born without the application of advanced medical technology? |
|
A very good argument can be made that it means 'non-naturalized' citizen--meaning that one qualified for citizenship at the time of one's birth.
The issue isn't new. Mitt Romney's daddy ran for president, and he was born in Mexico to American parents. It may have become an issue if he won the nomination.
Out of respect for the Constitution, I think we need some SCOTUS clarification. Though I know conservatives don't want to be bothered by the Constitution when it is convenient for them.
I was much more bothered by the fact that Cheney and Bush were both Texans, though the Constitution says that an elector CANNOT vote for a president and vice-president from the same state. It was not legal for the electors of Texas, in 2000 or in 2004, to select Bush as president and Cheney as vice-president. I know that he did some shenanigans to set his official residence as Wyoming so as not to show utter disdain for the law, but everyone knew that was just for show, and if he had tried to run for Senate from Wyoming his residency may not have withstood a challenge.
Ah well... |

This needs to be cleared up once and for all. It's a legitimate argument and needs to be handled in a legitimate fashion ( Supreme Court ). I hope this is done quickly before the general really gets cranked up. |
|
|
I recall learning this in the 7th grade. Apparently the Slimes' journalists never made it that far. |
|
Until 1978, Panama had no jurisdiction over the Canal Zone. Its Governor (usually a USA General) was appointed by the POTUS with the advice and consent of the Senate; it laws were Federal statutes; its courts were federal courts --- Congress created a Federal District Court for the Canal Zone and it was part of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals; "Zonians" sent delegates to the Democratic National Convention and representatives sat on the Democratic National Committee; only the US flag flew; and it was only in 1965, when a riot broke out when Panamanian students crossed into the Zone and attempted to raise the Panamanian flag, that LBJ agreed to open negotiations concerning the future status of the Canal Zone.
To suggest that McCain was born in a foreign country displays a total ignorance of American and Panamanian history.
By the way, Barry Goldwater was the first presidential candidate born in a territory, (before Airzona became a state), and nobody thought he was disqualified. |

There was a poll yesterday showing McCain leading with both Clinton & Obama. They know McCain is the only republican who would have a chance of winning the presidency. It will depend on the state of the Iraq war & economy so, of course, they don't want him as the republican nominees. |
|
A lot of people are afraid of McCain, including me.
Still, it was nice to see McCain direct some of his inherent bitterness squarely at Obama on the issue of Al Qaeda in Iraq. I want to see MORE of that.
On the issues, McCain can beat Obama. The trick will be to keep America focused on the issues. |
