Checking Out "Card Check"

When the 111th Congress convenes in January, one of the first pieces of legislation Congressional leadership will bring to the floor is the Employee Free Choice Act, also known as "card check."

The House passed the bill last year 241 to 185 – over my opposition, but it was hung up in the Senate as the Democrats were unable to get the votes needed to pass it. Having made substantial gains in the House and Senate, "card check" is going to be a top priority in the new Congress. It's also another reason to keep your eyes on the outcome of the Senate races in Minnesota and Georgia. Democrat victories in both of those states likely means smooth sailing for the bill.

The Coalition for a Democratic Workplace has launched a nationwide campaign to educate the public on how dangerous this legislation really is.  It eliminates the secret ballot for workers.

In states like Minnesota, they have launched individual websites. Check out My Private Ballot - Minnesota to learn more about "card check," and to find out how you can take action and stand up for worker's rights. Also, if you're a Sopranos fan, I think you'll get a kick out of who they have as spokesman for the campaign.

No quicker way to chase MORE jobs from the US is forced unionization......AND It will create MORE illegal immigration for illegal aliens to take the place of Union Jobs that remained.

It will put the nail in the coffins of Union stronghold states (not like they need another nail in their coffins which are already being lowered in the ground) like Ohio, Michigan, Pennslyvania, New York, etc, etc. Jobs will move overseas AND to other states that are right to work states.......

And the people of the US will stand back and see that the power of free markets will act once again, and move jobs out of the US, and crush the stupidity of the morons in congress.

They will see the liberal sh!tfoolery of it all, that it is a liberal policy meant to reward the votes by the Union for the moonbats....Unions are going to suffer once again.....

This will backfire......and the moonies will cry foul to the republicans.....

Unions are stupid enough to think that politicians can give them power back and advance their cause....power that left them many, many years ago......power that will not come back to unions that participate in the free market.

Politicians (liberal moonbats) are stupid enough to cowtow to Unions because it means "votes" for them so that they can stay in power. Union goals are irrelevant to Politicians.....only their votes matter.

Union is the Federal Gov't Employees Union! Think government can't get worse? Think again!

This is simply more proof, as if it is needed, that the leftists are not interested in individual freedoms on any level! They despise the Constitution, mostly secretly, but Obama has written that he does not like our Constitution and yet he is supposed to take an oath to Protect and Defend the Constitution to the "best of his ability". I guess he doesn't have any ability in that area.

Who's hiring? The government! The only sector that had a 9,000 increase while the rest of the sectors were in the negative! Who has a more stable, permanent, position than a government employee? Who has better health care? Or, pension? Maybe the auto workers. That's all. And, hopefully, not for long. It's ridiculous that our gov't is run by a UNION!!!

Living in New York, which is billions in the hole, I've seen the damage done by the state union. The politicians are too scared to cut any jobs or offer less benefits! As soon as my family is able, we are leaving this stupid state with it's ridiculous taxes and extremely high utilities. Unfortunately, I won't leave this country...

A frivolous issue for tough times
Ms Bachman: All the workers have to do is say no, I won't sign the card, and NO, I dont want to be a union member. A real man with a modicum of gumption will have no problem saying NO!.

We ask high school kids to "just say no" to drug selling peers, but big strong working men are afaid of a union organizer? puleeze..

This is a ridiculous issue to be expending political capital with a filibuster.

Do you want to see a filibuster? How about abortion enabling bills, stem cell research, so called "gay" rights, aka "sodomy rights", per.v marriages, hate crimes legislation, higher taxes, civil rights laws forcing churches to hire reprobates who dont share their beliefs. What about the government financing contraception for teens??

I could go on, but you get the point, surely?

FYI: Ms Bachman, a filibuster can be killed by a simple majority vote as former Senate Majority leader, Bill Frist proved, when the dims were getting ready to filibuster Justice Sam Alito-all the majority party has to do is change the senate rules disallowing filibusters on any designated legislation they choose. So Minnesota and Georgia really wont change that much.

We need to get back to MORAL issues first, or remain in the minority.

Yes, the worker CAN say NO, but will he be allowed to? Have you ever seen union intimidation? I have; in fact, I was a victim of it in the 1970's. You don't get a chance to say no.

Unions have insisted on all sorts of rules on votes, ranging from a vote within 60 days to opportunities which the employer must make for the union to present its case.

But even more important, what do you have against a FREE election? Why should you want to take away the opportunity to have a discussion and an election? Do you think that what is good for the unions of other countries is not good for ours? Go look at the letter which was signed by all of your Dem buddies in the Senate. http://kevincolby.com/tag/secret-ballot/. Or better yet, listen to what George McGovern is saying.

I think that the Democratic party should change its name to the Populist party if it passes this piece of abomination. Because it is NOT Democratic.

Historian, what did the union do to intimidate you into voting for a union shop?

Really, I am not arguing, I would honestly like some information to understand better what people such as yourself mean whnethey use the word "intimidation"?

Are you talking about being socially ostracised or getting the cold shoulder from your peers? Or called vile names? Or theatened? if threatened, what kind of threats? beaten up? and if so, by whom?

In know thats a lot of questions but the word "intimidated" can mean almost anything.

I have known lots of union workers and never heard that intimidation complaint.

Actually, the only complains I have heard about unions were that the union spends some of their dues supporting issues they dont agree with...

do companies ever intimidate workers? they sure dd in the 20's, and 30's. As a historian of course you know that.

(some workers claim they are still intimidated by corporations.) they may be exaggerating of course...

Labor law reform is needed
The balance of power has been with the employer for decades. Card check has been legal and used for decade; most recently with AT&T.

The Coalition for a Democratic Workplace is a group of business organizations that is opposed to worker’s exercising their right to have a voice in the work place.

Companies routinely intimidate, harass, coerce and even fire people who try to form unions—
and current labor law is helpless to stop them. The penalties are so slight for breaking the
law that corporations simply consider it the cost of doing business. The government found
that companies violated the rights of 26,824 workers in 2006 alone (and those are just the
documented cases). A quarter even illegally fire workers.

Even when workers win their unions, many companies delay bargaining any way they
can. According to a new study by MIT, 44 percent of workers who form a new union
never reach a first contract.

Check your facts on what penalties unions have received during organizing campaigns; you will find it is minuscule compared to the corporations.

The idea that what is good for big business is good for America isn’t always the case.
