Why Blaming Pelosi is a Stupid Strategy
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:25 PM

Republicans leaders say Nancy Pelosi's partisan speech just prior to the vote today resulted in losing about a dozen Republican votes.  While her speech was certainly inappropriate, my question is:  Should a rude speech cause a Republican to change their vote on this vitally important issue?

I applaud conservatives who opposed this bill on ideological grounds.  Voting "no" because a congressman philosophically opposed this bill would certainly have been appropriate and reasonable.  However, if Republicans think the American people will side with them on voting "no" -- because they were upset with Pelosi's speech -- I think they are terribly mistaken.

Personal slights and "snubs" should not influence ones vote on an important issue such as this.  A congressman's decision to vote for -- or against -- the bill should be based solely on whether or not they believe it is best for the country.  Pelosi's remarks should be irrelevant.

In his book, No Retreat, No SurrenderTom DeLay wrote of Newt Gingrich:

"He told a room full of reporters that he forced the shutdown because Clinton had rudely made him and Bob Dole sit at the back of Air Force One...Newt had been careless to say such a thing, and now the whole moral tone of the shutdown had been lost. What had been a noble battle for fiscal sanity began to look like the tirade of a spoiled child..The revolution, I can tell you, was never the same."

Is history repeating itself?

Update:  Michael Steel of Boehner's office says,

"the partisan speech by Speaker Pelosi today on the House floor cost as many as a dozen Republican votes on the rescue package that failed."

Steel sends along some excerpts of Pelosi's speech:

“Democrats believe in a free market.  We know that it can create jobs, it can create wealth, it can create many good things in our economy.  But in this case, in its unbridled form, as encouraged, supported, by the Republicans, some in the Republican Party, not all, it has created not jobs, not capital, it has created chaos.”

“$700 billion.  A staggering number.  But only a part of the cost of the failed Bush economic policies to our country.  Policies that were built on budget recklessness, when President Bush took office, he inherited President Clinton’s surpluses four years in a row, budget surpluses.  On a trajectory of $5.6 trillion in surplus.  And with his reckless economic policies, within two years, he had turned that around.  Now eight years later, the foundation of that fiscal irresponsibility, combined with an anything goes economic policy, has taken us to where we are today.  They claim to be free market advocates when it’s really an anything goes mentality.  No regulation, no supervision, no discipline.  And if you fail, you will have a golden parachute and the taxpayer will bail you out.  Those days are over.  The party is over.”

"For too long this government, eight years, has followed a right-wing ideology of anything goes, no supervision, no discipline, no regulation.”

“Before long we will have a new Congress, a new President of the United States, and we will be able to take our country in a new direction.”

Argument just doesn't wash
Democrats have the majority, Republicans can't stop the bill of the Democrats really want it to pass. Where is the breakdown of the vote?
David writes: Monday, September, 29, 2008 3:32 PM
Not a good thing to say
No we should not be taking that path. If you can't vote on it because of principle that's entirely different. Don't say people didn't vote for it because Pelosi is partisan.
Norman F writes: Monday, September, 29, 2008 3:36 PM
Why This Was A Bad Bill
What was wise was voting a bill so bad even its proponents could not muster a good for its merits. We can do better than rushing in a moment of haste, flaw legislation through Congress that threatened to upend our limited form of government and establish a precedent for socializing private losses. And it did NOT fix the root of the problem. There need to be hearings held on this and responsible legislation needs to be drawn up that does fix it. The wrong thing to do is to hold Middle Americans finally responsible for other people's mistakes and economic mismanagement.
Norman F writes: Monday, September, 29, 2008 3:40 PM
A Bad Bill Is Still A Bad Bill
A bad bill is still a bad bill. This was drawn up in extreme haste and would NOT have met the objective of fixing what's ailing the markets and setting them back along the road to recovery.

Excuse me but....
Boehner voted "yea" Pelosi voted "nay". It is Boehner who is crying about Pelosi's inappropriate comments before the vote. I doubt her comments made a whit of difference. Even my liberal Dem Congressman Adam Schiff voted "Nay". Find another excuse Boehner, you're a loser.

Republicans spotted her 65 votes and she could not get enough Democrats to approve the bill!

The spin is always to lay the blame
at the feet of the Republicans, even by our own. If they don't support the bill it must be for shallow reasons; like, peelousey made them mad. Just like if we don't vote for oblama it will be because we are racist.

This whole fiasco is a sham! It was designed as an anchor to be hung around McCain's neck and that of the Republican party. That my friends is why peelousey miscalculated the support needed from the dimwit party to pass this bill. She mistakenly thought she could later claim that it was the Republicans that forced this POS bill on the middle class to bail out their rich friends on wall street. She could point to the fact that a majority of the dimwits voted against it.

I say it is about time the spineless party of Republicans grew a pair of cajone's and told peelousey to F--KOFF! The dimwit party created this mess and they should own it! Personally I am ready to deal with come what may and so should the rest of the conservative party. Rearranging the deck-chairs on the Titanic are not going to keep it afloat. Letting the dimwit party hang another "Bush Lied" lie on the Republicans is not going to elect McCain.

The line is drawn and the Republicans need to understand this is the most important battle they will ever wage for the heart and soul of this country. Lose this one, you lose the election. Lose the elction and you have lost the war. There will be no come-back in 2012. Socialism does not allow competition.

The Culture of Corruption is and always will be the party of the dimwits.

Matthew...
That's not a bad way to look at it, after you cut through the spin.

Unfortunately, I am afraid that people on the 2 sides rejected it for different reasons. If the bill was loaded up with goodies like ACORN, then I think many of those Dems would turn in favor of the bill.

It is frightening what twists and turns this thing might yet take.
Joe writes: Monday, September, 29, 2008 4:07 PM
Finesse, NOT
Pelosi has the finesse of a gorilla. This isn't the first time she has scuttled an otherwise good bill by demagogue and partisanship. But I don't think that's the whole story behind the failure of the bailout. At its center, America has a representative form of government. Most Americans were against this measure and voiced their displeasure. The congress people had little choice but to listen. That may be why most bills are not publicized. As Bismark stated, there are two things people should not see, how sausages are made nor laws passed.

Phil, was your post on the other thread
concerning Pelosi. But I still have to ask huh?
Don writes: Monday, September, 29, 2008 4:19 PM
So the short answer to Matt's question
is a resounding YES!

That is exactly what I think the Republicans need to do. They need to hang this on peelousey and all the complicit dimwits that created this mess. They need to get in front of a microphone and force the media to let their voices be heard.

We have listened to the dimwit party and their press agents the MSM, insult the President and the Republican party for 7+ years now, and it is past time to fight back.

The Republicans need to demand congressional hearings and insist on an independent council to investigate this mess. It is time to hold their feet to the fire or we might as well raise the white flag. In my view, there is no point in even trying to negotiate a surrender because the party of dimwits are likened to the terroist. We have nothing they want beyond our allegiance or our blood!

So, if the Republican party insist on taking the high-road once again, the party of dimswits will convince the people it was all their fault all along. It was the failed policies of free-market capitalism, aided and abbetted by the Republican party, and the war will be forever lost!

This is the beginning of the second revolution. We can stand up to the true party of corruption or we can continue to try and negotiate with them. We know how well that has worked don't we?

Dumb and Dumber
Dumb is voting down the bill to rescue American capitalism is dumb ... dumber still is blaming it all on nasty words by one politician.

If people think the Dow dropping like a rock today is bad, just watch what comes next, as the inevitable series of shoes begin to drop ... the real impacts of our credit system shutdown will begin to be felt over the next several months, in the form of millions of layoffs as businesses can no longer get lines of credit to pay for operations, and as new orders disappear ... watch our 401K account balances drop like rocks too ... not to mention our real estate values.

Undoubtedly, President Obama and his pliant liberal Democrat Congress will raise taxes on "the rich", and take over more and more of the national economy over the next eight years. Matters will only go from horrible to unthinkable.

Causing this bailout effort to fail in the name of conservative ideology, or of hurt feelings (take your pick - it really doesn't matter either way) will deliver all three branches of the Federal government to the lefty Dems come November. We'll be digging our way out of both the Depression and the political wilderness decades from now ... just as the New Deal (and Dem control) lasted from 1933 to 1980 (and many vestiges of the New Deal remain today, 75 years later).

Ideology doesn't pay the bills, and hurt feelings about nasty speeches by Pelosi don't restore retirement accounts or the value of our homes.

The House Republicans just screwed America big time, and by that act they put lefty Dems in power for the next generation, or two.

How lame.

Unbelievable!

It seems to me
that if Americans really knew, via broad dissemination by the MSM, the history of FM/FM and who pushed it on the other financial institutions and were aware of how clearly the Dems discredited the whistle-blowers (who otherwise are Dem favorites when it comes to exposing corruption, graft or sexual impropriety) over the past 5-15 years, then perhaps we'd get a true reading of public opinion.

However, since the MSM is the DNC spokesman and will protect the Dems at, seemingly, all cost, we can't expect the public to become informed enough to affix blame and accountability equally on public and private entities.

Read Jeff Jacoby's article for more info.
Don writes: Monday, September, 29, 2008 4:37 PM
Amazing!
I would expect all of the Republicans to vote against the bill, when preceeded by a speech like that. Clearly 70% of the people have taken an unfavorable postion against this attempt to bail out wall street. So how does opposing the bill, for whatever reason, harm the Republicans?

This wall street rescue had far greater complications than the econonmy alone. peelousey and company are already on record as blaming this on the Republican party, then she gives a smack-down speech before the vote, leaving you with what option? Vote to pass the bill, thus giving credence to the carefully orchestrated spin that the party of dimwits have been spouting for two weeks now?

I think not! Make no mistake, this a battle for the heart and soul of this country and it is one that the Republican party and conservatives alike, cannot afford to lose. The party of gentlemenly conduct, the party that eats it's own, needs to start chewing on a few dimwits, and I don't care if they have to get down in the mud to do it. It must be done!

She insisted
Pelosi had her votes for this bill last Friday, she is the one who insisted that Republicans get on board, that way if the bill really hit the fan, then she can place the blame for it on the Republicans.

She and Reid are the most PARTISAN members of both houses. Neither of them ever own up to the horrendous mistakes made by the Demoncrats. I am glad this bill sank, it was a lousy bill to begin with.

I also noticed the loudest idiots on the Hill the past couple of days was Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. Hmmm, aren't these two the main culprits behind Freddie and Fannie hitting rock bottom? Didn't Dodd and Frank take in major, major contributions from Freddie and Fannie?

The American people have spoken, unfortunately the Demoncrats still are not listening, they are too busy placing blame on everyone else but themselves.

why it's stupid
For starters, it's stupid because it's a lie. Nobody with an IQ above room temp is likely to buy that argument. Boehner (and McCain) couldn't deliver their votes. It's that simple. Moreover, if you take the argument, prima facie, it suggests that they got their feeling hurt from a SPEECH and, therefore, were willing to blow up the economy in order to assuage their hurt feelings. It's laughable.

I wonder if any of the 12 GOP members who voted against this rescue plan ever took a history class. There arguments against government intervention sound just like Herbert Hoover.

Finally, McCain looks like a man out of control, spinning from spin to spin without any core beliefs. I'm voting for Obama because he is the one of the two candidates who has behaved like a president.

Mismanagement
If you want a bailout plan, here is how you go about it:

* The Bill would require the resignation of C. Dodd (Democrat), B. Frank (Democrat), Maxine Waters (Democrat) from their committees. There is ample proof that their rejection of timely reforms lead to this disaster.

* Allow for bringing charges of fraud and theft against former Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac executives. What is good for the goose (Enron) should be good for the gander (FM/FM).

* The disbanding and selling of the assets of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to those banks that have the solvency or as a loan that is recoverable with interest.

For all those Democrats out there: You should be thinking of replacing Nancy Pelosi as your Majority Leader. The woman is reckless and clearly not qualified to have such a high profile position in Congress. She should have been able to pass the bill by convincing her own party to vote for the bailout. IF I remember correctly, the Democrats have a majority in the House of Representatives.

Perfectly Good Reason To Vote No
Any reason to vote no on this thing is a good one. Nancy Pelosi is a vile partisan who needs to get slapped around so she learns some respect. First thing out of her mouth is a lie. Democrats do not believe in free markets or private property. Democrats are marxists. Everything that marxists do is designed to advance totalitarian socialism, destroy private property rights, destroy entrepreneurial freedom, advance government power, increase dependency. This scheme rewards the minority deadbeats who were promised a free house on the taxpayers' backs by radical ACORN. It rewards the corrupt Demo-commies in Congress who got kickbacks for covering for FNMA and the CRA cesspool. It rewards the ultra-rich Democrat fatcats who crave governmental intrusion as a way of stifling their competition and providing political cover for fraud. She has the nerve to blame Republicans. Stick this one up your a$$ Pelosi.

I wonder if it was Lewis, years ago that was the nameless source of the following anecdote.
Seems some CINO's were sitting at dinner with Newt and "apropos of nothing" Newt said he was more like so and so than so and so. The CINO RINO Gilt Bird Cabin piece of crap (or so I imagined) telling the story was overwrought with disdain for Newt.
I'd take Newt's word over Tom Delay's any day.
In fact, I'd say the whole Anti-Newt attitude of the Gilt Bird Cabin GOP is what got us this Royal "Moderate" Mess since Reagan, and The Anti-Conservative Maverick for a candidate.
Lewis can kisz my asz.

I despise anyone who presents me with a false dilemma and expects me to bite. Newt did what he did for a Variety of Political and Philosophical reasons--not the least of which was reading, correctly, the enemy's intent from their ACTIONS, including actions toward him. Similarly, Pelosi's partisanism reveals HER attitude, objectives, and AGENDA FOR AMERICA. Correctly interpreting it and voting accordingly is NOT personal, merely using personal experience as a guide to others’ revealed principles!

Matt, your blog should be about the lack of Pelosi's leadership, as she could not bring people together not even her own party, her disgraceful (as usual) partisan attack and lies. Instead you are using some of the same talking points as the violent left. The Republicans voted against it because they DID NOT BELIEVE IN IT, for some, Pelosi's disgraceful speech (she should resign immediately !!) her speech just served as confirmation of their gut instincts. Look at how wall street reacted, why ? Because they have the power to do it ! And you want to hand them more power and Pelosi another stage to continue to perpetrate her vicious lies and divisiveness, destroying our country. If the voters don't wake up and support these courageous Republicans and some Democrats, recognizing them in the voting booth, then we have lost the slim majority with at least some Wisdom. God has allowed it out of our hands and all that is left is to continue to pray for God's help for those of us who try to live by his laws, mercy for those who repent and God's judging hand, on those that caused and continue to cause this, God's judging hands, not ours! Why is there no outrage to throw out the Democrats who have failed misereably in the last two years, like against the Republicans? MEDIA MANIPULATION !! Who controls the media, THE LEFT !! BUSH TAPS DONALD TRUMP FOR NEW POST
Surley this whole ordeal with the "upsetting and hurt feelings" frankly is less than sophomish its freshmanish. It seems the older the most experienced get, the more stubborn, pig headed, emotional, and immature they become. Why pick on Pelosi, cause she's a polock. Now how does that feel? Did that hurt ýour feelings? Are you going to call me names now? And then I'll do the same to you but names will never hurt me. PLEASE PEOPLE GET A LIFE.
Bush's Treasury Secretary should be replaced immediatley by someone who can actually get something done. DONALD TRUMP, will accept an invitation to the White House and this post if asked. The nation needs someone with ECONOMIC SCOTUMS, (ok a bit distasteful) ECONOMIC FINESSE. Thats better. And who better to put to the post but the WHORE OF WALL STREET.

So you all are getting upset, huh?
Remember that the CCMRF is training on American soil starting October 1st, to learn crowd control and how to return things back to normalcy.

Just thought you all would like to know.

THE COMING MARTIAL LAW EDICT
Israel is getting itchy and those fingers are headed straight for Iran's nuclear sites. This will then prompt immediate strikes form Iran's allies which include the Russian Bear, Venezuela and other middle eastern nations. Eventually becoming an all out war, which will demand US attention. We will be forced to fight and defend Israel against her enemies, thus having President Bush to proclaim 'martial law'. This being done totally without congressional approval of any kind, only the Presidents military advisors can bring him to that decision. This will cancel all campaigns and elections will be placed on a temporary hold indefinetly. President Bush can gain another four years at least. The next war will take us into 2014 at least. This is not an biblical doom scenario, just one of many possibilites that has biblical overtones.

blame?
Didn't you know, the blame for this whole mess, according to some
conservatives is poor people on food stamps getting mortgages they could not pay for. Blaming Pelosi is much better than blaming the poor for the excesses of the rich.
Jane writes: Tuesday, September, 30, 2008 9:14 AM
Maybe it is wrong to totally blame
Pelosi but if a member already had serious concerns about the bill, her partisan speech might have been enough for them to see changing their vote as a way to publicize the fact that she is nothing more than a partisan hack. Someone should remind her that she is Speaker of the entire House - not just her fellow Democrats.

You don't "lead" by trashing the people you want to listen to you - but that seems to be the preferred Democratic style. Why else would the Dems dismiss anyone who doesn't fall in line with them as stupid, knuckledragging morons?

Let's not ignore the fact that she allowed Democrats in contentious seats to vote no in order to give them political cover. If she thought the bailout was so terrific she could have easily found the additional votes from within her Party.

I can't believe that anyone could pretend that one of the causes wasn't that people who were not qualified for mortgages got them. If you need food stamps to feed your family you certainly aren't in a position to take on a mortgage.

re: Pelosi's lies
I agree with the Republicans who voted against this bill because of Nancy Pelosi's speech. To hell with her lies. She has taken a trust to her constituencies and the American people and made it into a political speech. It is all part and parcel of the Democrat mantra to keep the power of the presidency, at all cost even lies, out of the hands of the Republicans. She knows full well that Clinton instituted the Community Reinvestment Act in the 1990's and that Chris Dodd and Barney Franks, both influential democrats, kept the money to poor risk borrowers flowing from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, not following sound fiscal guidelines that even I learned from my parents. Bush and McCain have tried to rein in these irresponsible programs yet receive no credit for doing so. Pelosi should not get away with making a blatant political speech over something as serious as this economic package.
This election season will unfortunately be strongly influenced by what I call the "dope vote", the people who don't bother to find out what is really happening and who listen to any thing that sounds good and is against eight years of a Republican president, despite the fact that they have enjoyed seven out of eight years of economic prosperity.
Let the Congress determine the best solution for this problem and let Nancy Pelosi keep her mouth shut.I don't need anymore fodder from Pelosi for the "dope vote" to feed on.

Let them swing
The ugly truth that only a few voices are allowed to speak up about is that the U.S. Economy as most of us regard it is NOT THREATENED.

Seriously, Main Street banks and credit unions have your deposits. Your deposits are FDIC insured. Regular banks are still happy to loan money to businesses and entrepreneurs - provided they aren't involved with financial sector speculation, mortgage securities, or sub-prime mortgages.

So regular American businesses and jobs aren't threatened in the least! The businesses that are threatened are the ones that played the risky casino games on the market and lost. They deserve to lose, and many on Wall Street are going to lose jobs or at least say good-bye to the days of massive profits with no work. What really dries up here are the funny-money tax revenues of these phantom profits and the massive campaign contributions from Wall Street via K-Street.

I say NO to taking tax dollars to continue a sick cycle simply to benefit campaign contributors. I say NO to the fear-mongering about economic collapse that has no grounding in reality. I say NO to creating a new Federal Bureaucracy to administer the bail-out that "just happens" to house the worst criminals and gamblers from failed firms like Lehman Brothers and Bear Sterns.

If you really want to fix something, FDIC insure the short-term fluctuations in the Money Market accounts that have screw up seniors' fixed-income portfolios, remove the Mark-to-Market rule of 2007, and repeal that wretched Community Reinvestment Act!

We KNOW Pelosi is a stupid woman
The Reps didn't need to point it out. We can listen and see, for ourselves, how she has made a fool out of herself once again. It WAS stupid of the reps to do this.

One of the striking things that Pelosi said (kinda made MY jaw drop) was her claim- one all the dems make occasionally- that demonRATs believe in the free market. Once I was finished laffin' until I wet myself, I yelled for all in the house to hear "WHEN did a demonRAT EVER believe in anything but socialism and Karl MArx?"
THAT is the most important thing she has said that I have taken note of. I pains me to imagine that there is ANY naive little fool out there who actually believes it.

Otherwise, Pelosi is just the town idiot. The first female SotH is a moron and a bit crazy (not to mention elected from the nation's only outdoor lunatic asylum)- not something the women in this country can be proud of.
Aaron writes: Tuesday, September, 30, 2008 12:48 PM
Did they vote their conscience?
In the heat of the moment I can imagine Republicans being highly offended by Pelosi's speech. But after the flames die down the issue still remains: Do the Democrats have no ideology at stake in this bailout? I think government control is right down their alley and so this is NO political risk to them despite what they say.

It may well be that Pelosi's remarks actually WOKE UP these Republicans who realized that Pelosi was really telling them it was not about what's good for the country but what's good for the Democratic ideology of nationalizing the economy...and that the fear had to be resisted. Was not that rude slap in the face just what free-market capitalists needed?

SCARY!
Is anyone else scared to death of Nancy Pelosi? How on earth did this hyper-liberal Californian become the speaker of the house? She is so out of touch with Americans it is scary!

Pelosi didn't kill the bill, and Republicans shouldn't vote based on her ranting and raving. But come on, Pelosi. What are you trying to achieve by saying those kinds of things right before a vote? This is the most un-american thing I've seen in a while.
Ron ROTFLMAO writes: Tuesday, September, 30, 2008 4:18 PM
I'm still trying to ....
figure out what was wrong with what Pelosi said. Nobody seems to have that answer, only that Republicans are afraid of her. Good for her for speaking the truth!

Why don't you try and find out the truth by reading about this economic crisis instead of just believing what you are being spoon fed by Nancy Pelosi?
If you don't bother to find out because you like socialism, therefore you like the Democrats, just say so. The truth is: Pelosi lies! If you don't bother to find out the truth, then you are a part of what I call the "dope vote"

Well; for GOD'S sake!
Ur absolutely right. It's the dumbest thing I've ever heard the repubs say in public. After every scathing and degrading thing they've ever had to say about Pelosi, that ANY repbulican would listen to her makes me roll in the floor with laughter. Oh, boy, do you remind me of irresponsible Adam blaming Eve for eating the rest of the apple after she only got one bite! As for the market, it's plain to all Americans they NEED A KEEPER! No if, ands, or buts, about it. It's YOU the stockholders who are responsible for the horrible shape our country is in, and you were warned, but you would not repent. I would advise you all to find Jesus before it is too late, and the time is coming....for JUDGEMENT DAY.
