On Flipping Him the Middle Name
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:20 AM

As I noted yesterday, a talk radio host who introduced John McCain in Cincinnati, touched off a minor firestorm when he referred to Barack Obama as Barack Hussein Obama.

While some will try to accuse Republicans of dirty politics, it should be noted that it was a Democrat -- former Senator Bob Kerrey -- who first referenced Obama's middle name publicly:

I like the fact that his name is Barack Hussein Obama, and that his father was a Muslim and that his paternal grandmother is a Muslim,” Mr Kerrey said. “There's a billion people on the planet that are Muslims, and I think that experience is a big deal.”
It seemed tawdry.  Kerrey, a Hillary Clinton supporter, was probably trying to hurt Obama by reminding voters he was Muslim.  But he did it in such as a way as to look like he was complimenting Obama (this is sort of like how John Edwards complimented Dick Cheney in a debate for having a gay daughter).

John Kerry did the same thing in a debate with President Bush, saying,
"And I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian," Kerry continued, "she would tell you that she's being who she was. She's being who she was born as. I think if you talk to anybody, it's not a choice."
Of course, you probably haven't heard the MSM make any reference to the fact that Bob Kerrey was the first to pull this.  Part of the reason is that, frankly, pundits are so focused on the news today that they can't really remember what happened as recently as last December...

But I think talk show host Bill Cunningham at least deserves credit for overtly mentioning Obama's middle name.  This is probably less tawdry -- and definitely less "cheap" -- than the subtle ways Hillary Clinton's campaign has sought to inject it into the campaign.

Flipping someone the middle name, of course, is nothing new.  And it works both ways.  In 2004, John Kerry, all of a sudden, transformed into, John "F." Kerry.  Perhaps he believed this would somehow sort of subliminaly link him to "JFK"?  In 2006, the Democrats loved referring to Sen. George Allen as "George Felix Allen."  I'm guessing they thought the name Felix sounded effete?  Who knows?  In an even more bizarre use of the middle name, some conspiracy theorists even noted that there were six digits in each of the names, Ronald Wilson Reagan, giving them "666".  Yeah.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.  In the meantime, check out this quiz that lets you guess the middle names of the 2008 contenders ...

Obama changed his name
to the current Muslim version. His choice. Why should he be ashamed of anyone using it. Why should we be wrong to use it. The PC attitude used by the Enemedia to control the situation is disgusting.

Kerrey's wife
It was the liberal Dems who dragged Kerrey through the mud over Viet Nam to keep him from running for President, while pointing fingers at Repubs for cover. He was one of the most intelligent, fair and courageous politicians we had. Now that he's married to a left wing tv writer, he acts like Cleopatra, Queen of Denial. I really cannot believe he (of all people!) would sink to religious bigotry to support Hillary Clinton and please his liberal princess, but he did. It reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where his private parts were having a debate with his brain. Another one bites the dust.

I listened to this
I listened to Cunningham's speech and his denials of non-slander an was fairly non-impressed. Everyone on these blogs and on talk radio agreed that the Dems were trying to slander Obama with the middle name a month ago.

Now Cunningham starts throwing it out there in a clear put down speech. McCain has no choice but to act when that happens.

What I don't get is that all these bloggers are such experts in what McCain needs to do to win the election, but are so forgetful of how Hillary is losing to Obama.

Subtle racism. You are right. The dems play that game all the time. Why stoop to their level?

And if you are all sick of the though police than stop picking in Hillary's people when they throw out the same digs.

Yes I listen to talk radio!!!!

McCain did the right thing
If you listened to this guys' comments, and comments he's been making for months, he should have never been allowed to be introducing McCain. I'm sorry but McCain did the right thing by apologizing for the remarks, regardless of what Cunningham seems to think about it. The guy has come off like a lunatic.

Middle name use
This is the type of thing that hurts conservatives. There is no other reason to use Obama's middle name except to somehow attempt to link him to radical Islam. There is no connection which leaves only one other result. It raises the idea of racist propaganda.
Bill Bennet's comments this morning about the arrogance of some talk show host who think it is all about them, made it clear. It isn't about them it is about our country.
A high 5 to John McCain for his response.

John Mccain is an honourable man; if he is to win in Nov. he must stay an honourable man. That means that neither he nor anybody associated with him must attack the RELIGION, WIFE, GOOD FAITH, PATRIOTISM of Barack Obama.

Hillary's tried it; it devoured her; McCain will not let it derail him!

By all means let him bring up Muslim Terror, Pride in America, Marriage and morals, flip-flopping--but it must never get down and dirty personal!

The day McCain uses Kos tactics, NYT smears, Huffpo slander he is finished.

Attack Obama on Hope; attack him on Change; but don't attack him for saying he's Afro-American when he is, in fact, Arab-American! (That's true, look it up!)

Craig writes: Wednesday, February, 27, 2008 11:17 AM
On the one side
Maybe we should have an alternative debate with Cunningham and Ann Coulter on one side and Michael Moore and the Daily Kos guy on the other. They can sling all kinds of ridiculous charges at each other all day and have fun. It can also leave the presidential politics to the grown ups.

Barack Hussein Obama Comment
Barack Obama has had the kitchen sink thrown at him, throwing out his middle name in a negative way, accompanied by a picture of Obama dressed in Somali garb, at the same time being endorsed by Farrakhan -- it's called "Got-Cha" politics, which is the worst kind of politics which only tends to divide and incite fear, it's called divide and conquer and/or "Swift Boating", which in reality is an assisination of character even though it is false.

However, Obama can be of use to America by addressing the need of some to sow divisions and exploit our differences, instead of building on that which unites us, and "The world can use him too, with his reach to the Muslim nations and his middle name making it impossible for the US to walk away from one of the biggest foreign policy blunders in history. A restructuring of this overall policy is due after the demolition of the World Trade Towers. Some people think it's cool to be cynical. They deride those who show overt respect, admiration, and optimism. Those who still believe they can make a difference. Those who know they have power. This campaign has proven that cruelty is no longer desired as political style in the United States. The people now have a choice. A choice between magnifying the negatives or using the positives..." From: Blogger, J.M., Raging Universe.

We cannot afford to continue to alienate our allies and friends in the Middle East by insinuating that to have the name Hussein means that you are evil or are to be feared. Do we really want to Convey that? There are many good and decent people with the name Hussein in the Middle East, some of which have been our allies such as King Jordan Hussein. We cannot continue to incite hatred and hostility, with the result of no end of wars in sight. America the world is watching.

LeeLee writes: Wednesday, February, 27, 2008 11:54 AM
Valid to question Obama's Muslim ties.
If continually repeating Obama's full name causes Americans to question Obama's commitment to the global fight against Islamic extremism, then I am all for it. This is a valid point of discussion.

McCain the Apologist and Liar
I watched Lou Dobbs on CNN last night. He showed a clip of McCain apologizing 3 times. What an appeaser!

Hey Mclame: Don't forget to apologize for slavery, AIDS, winning WW2, capitalism, the Internet, Tony Romo, and everything else under the sun.

Also, McLame is a Liar. On CNN he said he had never met Bill Cunningham before. Not True. According to Cunningham (who is a very credible source for those of you who have never listened to him), they have met on 2 separate occasions, and chatted briefly.

One of these "encounters" was only 6 months ago. Hey Johnny, are you so senile already that you can't recall these 2 meetings?

John McCain is a conservative with class unlike the radio commentator "flamethrowers" like Cunningham, who have no class. America is not well served by these radical right wingers who have done so much to make being a conservative a bad name. William F. Buckley Jr. and Barry Goldwater never had to resort to the name calling that Cunningham and his ilk invoke on a daily basis. The entire conservative radio, tv, and print media seem to be filled with people whose sole message is hate, fear, & demegoguery.

Gheez! When are the civilised citizens of America going to put this political correctness crapola into the dust bin of history??

If the civilised citizens were not protecting their @$$ by removing and extremely violent man from his throne and many palaces in Iraq HUSSEIN would just be a name.

The cowardly leftwing pundits, their editors and the educators from kindergarten to college are teaching our children Marixism and removing the history of America from the textbooks.

These ignorant people began this rampage with violence in the sixties. Now these numbnuts of the sixties are in their sixties ruling education at all levels from kindergarten to the elite colleges and universities in our country.

They have also infiltrated every department of governance including the office of POTUS.

They authored the books, authorised the books and all students are being taught from the books by the kooks who embrace Socialism and the Robin Hood Syndrome.

They are blind to the fact that Europe is abolishing their Socialist governance, a miserable failure, for capitalism.

One last, but very important, bit of legislation during the sixties was the Civil Rights Act and the Great Society by LBJ. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the pivotal reason this legislation happened.

Had he not been assassinated he could have continued to bring the blacks out of poverty into the role of educated, productive American citizens.

The black people who took his place allowed MLK, Jr.'s dream die on the vine and not without help from the Democratic Party which continues to keep the blacks in poverty, on the dole and do not give a rat's @$$ about anything except power.

As a liberal
I really, really hope that conservatives keep up this kind of silliness. I have loved hearing Bill Cunningham all over the place the past few days. His not as good a friend to liberals as Ann Coulter, but he's definitely a buddy.

Americans are generally civil, nice people, and they don't like jerks like this. It's why even less people listen to talk radio than watch the stupid Academy Awards. It's not appealing to the mainstream, and when these nasty little characters are in the public eye, it drives people to the Democrats.

The people who think that saying 'Hussein' is somehow a substantive argument are about as intelligent as those who somehow thought using Mitt's real name 'Willard', was an effective argument against him.

If you have a real objection to Barack, try talking about that. Trying to slur the name is childish and simple-minded.
Dan in SC writes: Wednesday, February, 27, 2008 7:26 PM
Amazing...
Bill Cunningham shows he's got some balls (unlike the linguine spined members of the new castrati) and you have a bunch of people (who call themselves conservatives) chastising him because he dared attacked the enemy. These are the same people who are afraid to fight the WOT because they're more afraid of offending Muslims than they are of dying at the hands of terrorists.

After all of the more disgusting and uncivil comments imaginable about President Bush the last 8 years, Republicans are now telling each other to not say anything negative about the Democrats. I'm disgusted.
Wacky writes: Wednesday, February, 27, 2008 10:39 PM
So...
I assume if we're not allowed to be PC any more I am allowed to say that the President is a muslim and dresses in exotic national dress and looks like he was dropped on his head as a child?

Because that's the level of abuse hurled at Obama, and I'd like to think I was more civilized than that. And I will be. Because I don't say that about the President (although I am more than happy to point out his failings) because it's just plain common courtesy we're talking about.

Just so much anger on these boards.

Vote Huck Tue 3/4 and in early voting!
All Paul supporters & everybody else vote Huckabee! Why this strategy? Well:

During the primaries it's obvious Paul will not win. A vote for Huck is a no-confidence vote in McCain (unless it's a vote for Huck, like mine was, but follow me for a minute). Huck has to win SuperTuesday 2 ESPECIALLY in TX & OH to keep McVain from the magic number of 1,191 delegates.

Then we'll get the brokered convention we want. At that point we will work to get either Huck or Paul, anybody but McAmnesty, nominated.

And if Paul's not the nominee, you can vote for him 3rd party (if he does it).

But for now the last chance you have to save your party from the RNC/MSM nominee is to vote for Huck.

AM Voting Huckabee March 4 in TX
I made that decision when my 4th choice dropped out in January. I decided to NEVER vote McCain in June 2007 after a call to his AZ office.

I decided, and told his office-RNC-TRP-TCRP I would write a name in if McCain was the Republican choice. Well the Liberal Independents/Democratics/Republicans gave us McCain so I will do what I stated.

Voting Huckabee March 4th then work for my Senator Cornyn and Congressman McCaul as well as local and state CONSERVATIVE Republicans, but we will in no way work for, send money to or vote for Senator John Sidney McCain III.

I was in Ohio listening to Billy Cunningham during the 1992 election every night as I communted to college (it was an hour drive each way). I hated listening to a conservative, becuase I was a liberal Demoncrat, but Billy kept me awake because he said things that I strongly disagreed with.

I remember Billy calling Bill Clinton "William Jefferson Clinton" on a regular basis. This infurated me because my name is BILL and I liked the idea of having a president with my fist name.

Cunningham has a history of using full and proper names, so it does not surprise me that he called Barac "Barac Hussain Obama." So BHO dont like it, so what? Since when do we limit our conservative communication based on what the LIBERALS want? Oops, we cant call BHO a liberal, we cant make fun of his ears, geeze...screw it, I'll call him DUMBO!

Thanks, but Huck is no RINO. That's the false impression left by the McCain=Huckabee smear spread by the Rush/Hannity/Ingraham/Coulter crowd when their boy Mitt was still in the race and they tried doing anything to get him elected.

There's also lots of garbage-FALSE garbage-on the web painting him as a "pro=life liberal" (whatever that is) or saying just b/c he's Baptist, he'd be as bad as Jimmy Carter. They don't even agree politically!

Just the way it is perceived
It just breaks down to how the public perceives Bill Cunningham’s’ comment and if it was meant to be a conservative attack of some sort. It was a good thing that McCain responded the way he did or it could have snowballed into a really bad public scrutiny that would badly hurt McCain in the long run. It is his name, but to point it out with the tone that Bill Cunningham did during the introduction seems to imply a sort of radical Islam connection or racist propaganda. It is hard to stick to the issues and pick a presidents that is most qualified when everyone is looking at names to debate over.

The Name Doesn't Change Capabilities.
Bill Cunningham obviously was trying to use Barack Obama’s middle Name as a way to hurt his campaign. Trying to connect him to radical Islamic groups is not only harmful to his campaign, it degrading to his culture and to the people of the Islamic faith. This will surely affect the Islamic vote in Texas, which there is a large population in the Dallas community. His middle name should have been introduced and encouraged by himself. His campaign is all about “change,” so he should change the way people express their heritage by using his full name in his campaign to encourage people to be themselves. Bill Cunningham accomplished nothing by making these remarks, he just manage to insult an entire religion and culture. The only person that was helped by these statements was Senator McCain, because he gained the respect of many by taking responsibility over an event he had no control over.
Shariff writes: Sunday, March, 02, 2008 7:57 PM
Jess please pass the Schizophrenia
If you know anything about Texas it is that it has a rather large Middle Eastern population. Which plays a huge part in the voting community of the Dallas area, that has one of the highest delegate counts in Texas. As far as Hillary Clinton's campaign, she shouldn't be worried about the Islamic vote or the Hispanic vote, she should worry about her Schizophrenia. If your insult a whole community use the right term you imbecile. Is there any other nationality you would like to insult, while you get no point across?
