Dear Conservatives: There's Good News and Bad News
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 1:53 PM

The Good News:

Jeb Hensarling was elected Republican Study Committee Chairman, 57-42.

Hensarling carries the Mark of the Club-- frowned upon by D.C. elite, smiled upon by me:

Hensarling was elected in 2002 with Club member support and he has remained a steadfast hero for taxpayers.

The Bad News:

Remember that guy in Tennessee who we were all defending and cheering and donating to, so that we could pick us up a Senate seat in the name of Republicans and possibly a hint of conservatism? Well, we knew he was no Coburn, but this???

Corker is a Main Street Republican.

Some of this group's notable achievements include helping the GOP cave into ani-ANWR forces in 2005 and boasting this list of Senatorial members, and pressing the President to ditch his repeal of the Davis-Bacon prevailing wage requirements in the wake of Katrina (which is a fancy way of saying they made the reconstruction cost a whole lot more than it could have). And, they're funded by Soros!

You can check out their list of "successes" for yourself.

RedState is unhappy.

The sad thing is
We may beyond the point where any solution is possible. Reports are starting to come in that Saudi Arabia and Jordan have been funding Sunni insurgents (possibly with links to Al'Qaeda in Iraq) as a way of containing the Shiite nationist movement they see embodied in Iran.

Iraq has become not only a civil war but a proxy war. Nothing good can come of it. Perhaps it is time to threaten to leave unless the people of Iraq start to make a difference.

We are faced with a devil's bargain in Iraq: Leave and let things disintegrate, or stay and make things worse. This is exactly why a decision like this should have been made with widespread backing of the international community instead of a (failed) show of US unilateralism.

There is still hope. What we should be doing is noting that we still have strength but that this is already a regional problem. We should go to Iran and Syria, and negotiate in a matter of mutual interest. We should seek not a single-point solution, but a comprehensive framework involving nuclear programs, security guarantees, funding for those who attack inside the Green Line of Israel (I think we can ignore fighting over the Golan), etc. But we have to do so from the position that this is a way forward for everyone in the Middle East. And we need to make it clear that the security guarantees are void if the other side doesn't live up to their end.

My apologies
I can't be my usual poisonous self, it's more of a challenge to destroy a major Liberal blog, but it's working, and it's even funnier than a soapbox.

What's with the pop up windows
Wow. Could the Townhall.com web pages be anymore obnoxious? What's with all the Vonage popup windows and your website? Every mouse click, and I mean every single one manages to pop up a Vonage advertisement popup window.

Give us a break, please. Or, I'll have to find somewhere else to go for my daily dose of punditry.

I'm serious.

certainly not a stellar list...
...but I wasn't aware Bob Ehrlich was a member of said group. Given the operating environment for the Old Line State though, I think Ehrlich did a great job and was generally acceptable to conservatives. He could be more socially conservative for my tastes but he served as a good firewall against the Democrats for a few short years. [sigh]
