The Willful Blindness of Barack Obama
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 8:56 AM
Barack Obama wants to hike social security taxes, double the capital gains tax and restore the death tax to its highest levels.

Barack Obama opposes any expansion of exploration for oil even though the price you are paying at the pump is soaring and the only way to halt the rise is increased production.

Barack Obama wants to meet, without preconditions, with Ahmadinejad, Chavez and Kim Jung Il.

Barack Obama wants the U.S. to quit the field in Iraq ,imperiling the victory there that is emerging with unmistakable clarity.

But perhaps worst of all his many terrible positions, Barack Obama wants to return to the anti-terrorism model of the 1990s --the criminal justice model.

That's what he told ABC News' Jake Tapper yesterday:

And it is my firm belief that we can track terrorists, we can crack down on threats against the United States, but we can do so within the constraints of our Constitution. And there has been no evidence on their part that we can't.

And, you know, let's take the example of Guantanamo. What we know is that, in previous terrorist attacks -- for example, the first attack against the World Trade Center, we were able to arrest those responsible, put them on trial. They are currently in U.S. prisons, incapacitated.

And the fact that the administration has not tried to do that has created a situation where not only have we never actually put many of these folks on trial, but we have destroyed our credibility when it comes to rule of law all around the world, and given a huge boost to terrorist recruitment in countries that say, "Look, this is how the United States treats Muslims."

Over the weekend, my C-SPAN "After Words"interview with Andrew McCarthy, lead prosecutor of killers behind the first attack on the World Trade Center aired.  McCarthy's new book, Willful Blindess, details the terrible gaps in the approach to terror that the U.S. pursued in the '90s, gaps which led directly to 9/11.

Obama wants to return to those days, which means a certain countdown to another 9/11.

Obama's vacuous assertion that fecklessness in the face of terrorism allows us to say to the world "Look, this is how the United States treats Muslims,"  is astonishing.  It reveals that at Obama's core there is a belief the operation of Gitmo somehow makes the U.S. anti-Muslim, and it buys into the most perverse of charges, that the U.S. has lost "credibility when it comes to the rule of law around the world."

The credibility of our attachment to the rule of law does not depend on the editorial board of Al Jazeera.  Nor does it depend on the nod of a first term senator from Illinois with a huge e-mail list.

It depends on our actual, magnificent, centuries-old respect for the law and acknowledgement of its authority, a respect for law that is embodied in the military tribunals being used at Gitmo (which were not overthrown by last week's decision which instead supplemented them with additional habeas proceedings.)

Over the weekend Obama incoherently suggested that the example of the Nuremberg Trials somehow indicted our system of using military tribunals to try terrorists.

This is another display of historical ignorance by Obama, one that rivals his glowing assessment of the Kennedy-Khrushchev Vienna summit.

The Nuremberg Trials were conducted before an International Military Tribunal.

Our military tribunals at Gitmo are in fact certainly fairer than those used at Nuremberg because there are no successors to Major-General Iona Nikitchenko on our panels.

There were no habeas rights provided the Nuremberg defendants, as implied by Obama this weekend, just as there is no anti-Muslim prejudice in our system of military tribunals, an accusation endorsed by Obama yesterday.

It has become painfully obvious that Obama's platform embraces all of the anti-American twaddle of the past five years while ignoring all of the great good accomplished in that time, including the overthrow of Saddam and his mad-as-hatter sons, the disarmament of Libya of its WMD, some progress in Lebanon (now imperiled by an emboldened Iran and Syria) and of course no foreign-directed terrorist attack within the U.S. since 9/11.  (We should not forget the many examples of Sudden Jihad Syndrome and their victims.  In fact, for an example of the efficacy of the Obama model for fighting terrorism, look at the recent result in the trial of the Seattle mass killer:  A mistrial.)

On issue after issue we have enormous clarity on the differences between John McCain and Barack Obama, but nowhere are these stark differences more important than on how the two men would conduct the war against jihadism.

John McCain will instruct the military to continue to wage it wherever necessary to prevent its return to our shores.

Barack Obama will attempt to prosecute terrorists after they kill who knows how many Americans even as he badmouths the American justice system.

Kudos to Tapper on focusing his interview on important issues.  I will play the audio of my interview with Andrew McCarthy on today's show.  If you want the riveting details on why our approach to terror-fighting in the '90s was so wrong and why Obama's declaration is so troubling, order a copy of Willful Blindness: A Memoir of the Jihad.  Send one to Obama is you have his address.

Willful Blindness: Memoir of the Jihad

UPDATE: The interview with Andrew McCarthy did not air this past weekend but will air next weekend.  I will play the audio next week.

Hugh Hewitt's willful blindness
Willful blindness is a good description of this column. Early in the campaign, Senator Obama said that he would strike high level terrorist targets in Pakistan without permission from Pakistan if he had actionable intelligence, a position that Senator McCain promptly denounced. A few months later the U.S. did just that to kill a high level terrorist.

All the recent supreme court ruling that so horrifies the right will do is force the government to stop holding people indefinitely and prove that there is some reason to believe they really are enemy combatants.

There can be no better example of willful blindness than denying that many Muslims believe, wrongly for the most part, that we are anti Muslim.

6 people died
Yes, there were people killed in the first bombing of the World Trade Center. Yes, we captured some of those responsible. But the blind sheik was plotting from behind bars while we allowed him and the others to enjoy life after taking the lives of others. And, had they not been unsuccessful, they would have killed hundreds more.

So, by all means, let's let them have Constitutional rights. But loosing your life for taking the life of someone else in not prohibited by the Constitution, only by activist judges. Just as lethal injection may cause some pain. What ever happened to justice for those that were killed and lost all their rights?

And, the Dems are unabashedly counting on millions of kids of voting age--with NO sense of past or history, as they aren't educated that way anymore--to ignorantly traipse to the voting booths & do the deed for Bazama.(Prager has an excellent column at TH addressing this..)I expect to see an absolutely unprecedented Dem Voter Registration Drive in the months ahead.

SCOTUS choices will rule on all other...
If the Messiah gets a chance to fill at least 3 spots on SCOTUS, the Court will rule on all the issues that posters have put forward including myself. Second Amend. stuff will be brought back if Kennedy doesn't get the other 4 libs to undo it next week. Taxes will hiked and found to be an even more govt. right to deal with many issues now that are not covered by court decisions. Military rights will be subsumed by perp rights even on the battlefield. Choice in school will be simply ended for all time. There will never be choice in SS as there is on abortion. 16 years of liberal radical socialist pacifists will change this nation irrevocably. The Moveoners, jihadists, Kosites, and other anti-American enemies of America will be given free reign. So being fearful of this faux Messiah is needful if the USA wants to stop the changes he and the Left wants. For that alone, people must be warned .

change we can believe in

Obama promises to cut military spending in half
and use the money to balance the budget

This is change we can believe in.
-----
Worried about that thingy growing in your stomach?
Obama promises to reclassify fetuses and babies.
There will be no more babies inside a woman
And
Therefore, there will be no more aborting actual babies. [Or even actual people if one insists on thinking of it like that]

This is change we can believe in…
-----
And if you having trouble aborting your fetus…
Abortion clinics on demand for fetuses will be established in every zip code in the country

This is change we can believe in
----
Worried about housing for Mexican immigrants?
Since the military budget will be cut by half,
Obama promises to physically cut the Pentagon
In half and renovate into low cost housing for all Mexicans.

This is change we can believe in
-----
Worried about that massive military budget?
Obama promises to take the military budget and
Tax each branch at the corporate tax rate.
The Marine Corps, of course, will be taxed at a higher rate as they are more efficient with their
Money than the Navy, Army or Air Force.

Money earned by the government via this exciting new revenue stream will be used to balance the budget.
------

Obama promises to have monthly open houses for any terrorist in the world, thereby learning of their plans to further attack anyone all over the world
And
Instructing them to not do that.

This is change we can believe in
------
Obama promises to cause the water to recede in Flooded Iowa. With his stated ability to make the oceans recede [with MY help] this should be a small matter.
This is change we can believe in
------
Worried about Judicial views and rulings?
Obama promises to set 7 year term limits for Conservative Supreme Court Judges…. Thus allowing him to appoint a Supreme Court entirely
Consisting of Liberal Judges by the end of his second term.

This is change we can believe in

The Willful Blindness of Barack Obama
That was an excellent summary of the important issues our country must face and the differences on these issues between the two candidates.

The differences are clear. Any person, moderate to conservative in political outlook, who reads this piece must conclude that McCain is the only choice for president. A rational arguement based on the candates positions on the issues cannot be made in support of a vote for Obama.

The question remains how many voters will actually base their vote on a rational analysis of the issues?

Mr. Hewitt has a clear, analytical mind and an important voice. I hope that enough moderates listen to him to give McCain the win.

As the election nears, rational arguement will not be enough. Republicans must hammer Obama on his lack of experience, lack of judgement, short list of accomplishments, and extreme liberal voting record. This includes constant reference to Rev's Wright and Phleger, the Dorn/Ayers connection, the Rezko/house issue, Mrs. Obama's extreme views, etc.

The recent decisions by the California and US Supreme Courts should also focus voters minds about the perils of an Obama presidency. More Liberal justices would be a disaster.

[Barack Obama wants the U.S. to quit the field in Iraq ,imperiling the victory there that is emerging with unmistakable clarity.]

If we are winning, now seems as good a time as any to begin letting the Iraqis step up and start bringing our troops home.

[But perhaps worst of all his many terrible positions, Barack Obama wants to return to the anti-terrorism model of the 1990s --the criminal justice model.]

So Obama would utilize intelligence, law enforcement, military and international assets to get intelligence and bring individual terrorists to justice with a small footprint that doesn’t inflame more Muslims and make the bogus rhetoric of a ‘war on Islam’ look credible, as opposed to invading another country, occupying it for years (or decades or centuries, who knows?) and engaging in expensive (and corrupt) nation building, generating mass resentment in the country and radicalizing a generation of young Iraqis, to try and do the same?

Truly ‘tis madness, I say! This Obama cad must be stopped!

Health Care, Education, diminished resources, a broken government, the "Recession" and, GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!!

All of which of course can only be tackled with less and less freedom; in the form of less money in you pocket(taxes), less options to oppose his policies (if you are against him you are evil, racist)and, more restriction to your individual action(as in more regulation and inflation).

If that is not communism I don't know what is. And believe me I know.

Suddenly, the Democratic Party finds "the Clintons" way to moderate to carry the party banner, just after they purge moderates like Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman and then try to destroy them.

[Barack Obama wants to hike social security taxes]

Hmm…

Option a: spend money we don’t have to set up government 401k plans that dump money into a market that carries a degree of risk and loss.

Option b: Keep the same system we have, while adjusting factors like tax exemption status, age, etc.

Option c: Abolish the system altogether for the vast majority of Americans, treat them like adults and let them plan their own retirement. But maintain a basic safety net to provide for the truly destitute.

Option C should be the GOP position, telling Americans that we have a responsibility to provide for the truly poor, but for most Americans, they are smart enough and capable enough to plan for their own retirement.
Because once you accept the premise that government should provide for retirement or help do so, you undercut your argument, as option B is a much more conservative and safer choice than option A.

[the only way to halt the rise is increased production.]

Or reducing demand or getting our fiscal house in order to stabilize and strengthen the dollar, but you know, why let little things like facts get in the way of a good partisan rant, right?

Obama's foriegn policy will be shaped by...Winnie the Pooh.

Richard Danzig, who served as Navy Secretary under President Clinton and is tipped to become National Security Adviser in an Obama White House, told a major foreign policy conference in Washington that the future of US strategy in the war on terrorism should follow a lesson from the pages of Winnie the Pooh, which can be shortened to: if it is causing you too much pain, try something else.

Mr Danzig told the Centre for New American Security: “Winnie the Pooh seems to me to be a fundamental text on national security.”

He spelt out how American troops, spies and anti-terrorist officials could learn key lessons by understanding the desire of terrorists to emulate superheroes like Luke Skywalker, and the lust for violence of violent football fans.

(Lest anyone suspect that the Telegraph is exaggerating Danzig's role in the campaign, note Obama called Danzig "one of our key foreign policy advisers" in November 2007.)

Bush's arrogance or stupidity
But I believe one has to admit that Bush has been terrible bordering on reckless at articulating the reasons behind his actions. He has left an intellectual void into which the Obama mindset has flourished around the world.

He has given no good answer to the “Geneva Convention” criticism of our actions that border on torture. He has been terrible at articulating and driving home that Muslims have been treated very well in this country in the last 50 to 100 years. He is even failing to make a strong statement against the idiocy of the 5 members of the Supreme Court.

For example, if Bush really believes that he and congress were right in their procedures for Military tribunals and an appeal to the DC Circuit, why doesn’t he stand up and tell the Supreme Court that they have no authority to alter Congress’ removal of jurisdiction from the Federal District Courts, and then simply ignore the Supreme Court. He might have even removed the detainees from Cuba that very night to emphasize his point. But it seems to me that Bush has this habit of pushing the envelope, then not giving any clear articulation of his reasoning.

I’ve started to conclude that the Bush administration has either been too stupid to make their case to the public in the strongest intellectual terms, or they have been too arrogant to do it. Either way, it has indeed hurt us.
