School Bus Thefts Raise Security Concerns
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:58 PM
This story is coming out of Houston:
Seventeen large, yellow school buses were stolen recently from various charter schools, business schools and private bus companies.

... One detective said the buses may have been stolen and taken across the border to Mexico and that terrorism is unlikely.

Nevertheless, since the Sept. 11 attacks the thought of terrorists targeting children has certainly been discussed by the Department of Homeland Security. And that is why finding out what happened to these buses is very important.

Without alamring folks too much -- or becoming overly conspiratorial -- it is easy to see how terrorists might use school buses in attacks aimed at our children.  Either way, it is good to see that these sorts of things are being noticed, and paid attention to.

Why wouldn't they just buy busses?
I'm very happy the government is looking into this as a possible serious threat. And I have no doubt terrorists would use busses to attack children.

But why would terrorists steal them? Do the used school buses you see parked here and there cost that much? Wouldn't it make more sense to buy these and repaint them rather than steal a bunch of busses which will obviously be noticed by at least local authorities?

I think there may be something to this
I am inclined to think that Al Qaeda may use the buses in an attack on our kids.
First here is a thought as to why our children may be targets. By hitting our kids, their goal would be to enrage us so much that we would start burning Mosques. Media coverage of this would enrage and unite the Muslim world against the west in a holy war.
Here is where I see the buses fitting in:
Buses can haul lots of explosives and men. They all also inconspicuous in an education setting. Think of it. In the morning these things just line up in-front of schools and drop off our children. Here are some horrific scenarios:
1 .What happens if one full of explosives pulls up in that line and goes off?
2. What happens if they storm out of that bus spraying the children in-front of the school and then proceed into school leaving the bus behind as an explosive booby trap for police outside?
3. What if they park one of these things near a bunch of children at a sporting event like a football game and then detonate it?
The main thing in each of these scenarios is that a bus really blends in when you are talking about a school setting. This would give them the element of surprise they. And Bin Laden himself asked God to have mercy on our children

a bus might be used as a projectile

Matt, if a school bus full of children was hijacked, then that might suggest "attacks aimed at our children."

However, I think if EMPTY school buses have been stolen, it doesn't necessarily suggest "attacks aimed at our children."
Rather, it might suggest the stolen buses might be used as projectiles loaded with explosives to drive into buildings, bridges, or gas stations.
