Really Quick Debate Rehash
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 12:15 AM

The Big Three:

Romney seemed to speak the most of any of the big three, give most of the basically right, rote answers, and managed not to make any gaffes. He's still not doing it for me, but I think he probably gained the most tonight. He got his face and name out there, seemed good-humored and looked presidential. He sounded knowledgeable on stem cells and fairly genuine on his pro-life conversion. He got off a couple good lines even though humor's not his main characteristic. His answer to the Bill Clinton quesion-- "You've got to be kidding me."-- was perhaps his most genuine moment of the night.

McCain showed up without his good humor, and the finger-stabbing was awkward. I'm inclined to like McCain most when he's both tough and good-humored. Tonight, he was tough, but no fun at all.

Giuliani showed up without most of his storied charm. That's the thing that gets a lot of conservatives past the policy differences. If he doesn't have it, that walking the line on Roe v. Wade becomes much more obvious.

He still doesn't do it for me, but I'd say Romney probably came out on top. McCain and Giuliani didn't noticeably mess up, but their likeable, distinguishing characteristics got lost in the shuffle tonight. Romney doesn't have that "it" factor that McCain and Rudy usually have, but he didn't disappoint anyone by showing up without it.

The Others:

Of the others, I liked Duncan Hunter and Huckabee best. Huckabee is surprisingly charming and a colorful speaker.

Hunter had my favorite line of the night, and came across as presidential. When asked to name one thing the government does well, he said, "Those precision-guided munitions on Zarqawi's safehouse. That was done very well."

That was my favorite line of the night.

Video of Katie and me discussing the debate as soon as I'm done cutting it up.

Perplexing about that "it" factor
If McCain and Guilani showed up without their "it" factor, maybe they don't really have "it" anymore.

If Romney doesn't really have the "it" factor, how come he outshone the ones who do have "it"?

Not sure...
but that Battlefield Earth thing has forever colored my impressions of Mr. Romney. That's too bad...

the it factor
"Romney doesn't have that 'it' factor that McCain and Rudy usually have..."

I'm not sure about Rudy, but the "it" factor that McCain has is unelectability. He could conceivably win the GOP nomination, but there is no way he wins the general election.

R.I.N.O Stampede
Besides maybe Paul, Hunter, Tancredo and Huckabee, the rest are just vanilla flavored liberal republicans. Its a shame, but the whole world is turning liberal. I guess if we have to have one, it may as well be a fiscally conservative one so Romney or Guliani at least fit that bill.

Huckabee
I like Huckabee but my judgement is clouded because I live in Arkansas. He is a solid social conservative, but he is a little squishy fiscally. I don't necessarily hold that against him. Our legislature is overwhelmingly Democrat, so he was always limited in his allies in that body. He is very good at compromising without giving away the farm. He managed to force much-needed school consolidation on the state when most people were opposed to it. He didn't get everything he wanted, but he got a lot more than most people hoped that he would.

Evolution?
Was that the deal breaker for you, Moral? You gotta be kidding!

Come up with a decent fossil record, and I'll get behind evolution. Until then, let's not burn any heretics at the stake.

What the he*# ???? Chris Freakin Matthews as the moderator of a Republican debate??? Who thought that was a good idea?

Also....
.........why does everyone immediately attack the South when they hear something they don't like regarding Darwin's Theory? Did someone in the South steal your lunch money when you were a kid or something, moral_maj. ??? Rednecks are everywhere, and you don't need to invoke the South to drum up pictures of stupidity. Heck, I'll take you to plenty of places in Philly/NY/Bos. where the people have no idea what evolutuion even is! How 'bout we ease up on immediately slamming Southerners whenever someone disagrees with Mr Darwin? We're more than a little tired of it,thank you.

I think Ann Coulter pretty much puts it out there that she has no use for the Theory of Evolution, doesn't she? I believe she grew up in Connecticut. I guess she's a stupid Yankee hick, huh?

HUNTER 2008

Republican voters still get to decide who their nominee will be. Money only buys elections when people act like sheep. If 80% of Republicans are indeed seeking a conservative, we can nominate one. We can nominate Duncan Hunter. The money players won't like it and are trying to convince us only Rudy, Romney, or McCain can win. Hogwash. 49% of people will never vote for Hillary. Only 60% voted last time and turnout was the difference. My belief is Rudy would push turnout down. There might even be a third party, splitting the vote. Give Americans a chance to vote for a candidate who WILL secure the border and watch what happens to turnout. Americans want their government to fulfill it's most basic responsibility.

The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.

Rudy puts Red states in play
If it comes down to 2 New York liberals, many won't bother to show up.
roho writes: Friday, May, 04, 2007 9:32 PM
Rudy Is A Regional Candidate:
Rudy is a regional candidate and the bulk of conservatives will not turn out to watch a New York Mayor and a New York Senator argue for the rest of the Nation......Theres 50 States in this fight. You can't dress up like women, be pro-choice, govern a sanctuary city, march in Gay Pride parades, claim catholicism with multiple marriages, and ride into town on an elephant chanting "Me too, I'm a conservative!" The small business owner in Smalltown U.S.A. ain't stupid! One of the lower tier TRUE CONSERVATIVES needs to break out of the pack, and there is plenty of time for that to happen. When Fox or a reputable organization hosts a debate, REAL conservative questions and solutions will be on the table. That was a CIRCUS!
lazyeye writes: Saturday, May, 05, 2007 1:57 AM
Evolution is a theory
Not a law. There is a reason for this. Evolution has yet to be proven, for the single reason that it is unprovable. Another example of this is the "Big bang theory". Can't be proven. There exists only speculation about these topics. Laws can be proven like the law of conservation of energy, which would actually dissprove the "big bang". Seeing as how evolution is a theory and not a law, accusing someone of being an idiot or "redneck" for not believing it is illogical.

And for the record, no museum or fossil has changed the theory of evolution into a Law.

"why does everyone immediately attack the South when they hear something they don't like regarding Darwin's Theory?"

In this case, maybe because the three who disagreed with evolution (Tancredo, Huckabee, and Brownback) are from the South?

Sure, there are plenty of science-hating individuals in any state, but only in the southern states do you actually see these people getting consistently elected.
Liberty writes: Monday, May, 07, 2007 4:12 PM
It's a theory, not scientific law
If one truly believes in science, they understand the difference between a THEORY and a LAW. Darwin's theory is just that... a theory. It has not been proven. Anyone that thinks it has, is sadly mistaken.
Liberty writes: Monday, May, 07, 2007 4:18 PM
Why did the author focus on evolution?
Instead of the glaring issues in our country. There is little to no conservatism in the Republican Party any longer. Yes, there are a lot of people running around claiming to be conservative, but few really are. Let's look at it. Here are what used to be considered conservative principles:
- limited constitutional government
- personal privacy
- personal responsibility
- strong national defense
- fiscally responsible government
- individual liberty

Note that it says nothing about "social conservatism". There is only one brand of conservatism, not multiple flavors. Social conservatives are not conservative at all. They are people who believe in BIG government, only differing from liberals in what they want their BIG government to do. Conservatives believe in limited constitutional government. I think you can easily see the difference.

We have gotten away from our roots and let a bunch of statists steer us away from our conservative principles. It's time for us all to take a step back and remember what this country was supposed to be all about and our conservative ideals.
