The Audacity Of Denial

So, was Obama just as naive as a child for 20 years, or as disingenuous as any major political figure of the last forty years when he denied knowing the real Pastor Wright this morning?
Either way it creates a huge issue for voters. Is Obama a dupe, or just duplicitous? Do you want him in charge of the nation's security, making judgments about our enemies?
Follow-up reporting should focus on the depth of the relationship between Wright and Obama. In Philadelphia Obama described a deep, strong and personal bond. How deep? What did they talk about all these years? How could you miss the government-created-AIDS etc?
"I did not vet my pastor before I decided to run for the presidency," Obama declared today. That's not the point. The point is Obama's judgment. Or his truthfulness.
One starting point --as Stanley Kurtz notes today, Pastor Wright attended the Million Man March. So did Obama. Obama writes about the Nation of Islam in his memoir, Dreams From My Father. How can Obama possibly expect us to believe that he didn't know that Pastor Wright esteemed Louis Farrakan? This morning Obama used the Wright praise of Farrakhan yesterday as one of "ridiculous propositions" that led him to "denounce" Wright.
(When men from my church attended the Promise Keepers rally in D.C. in 1997, they went as a group. Do you think that either Obama or Wright traveled with others from their church membership to the rally? I hope a reporter asks Pastor Wright that follow up.)
|
|
"Do you want him in charge of the nation's security, making judgments about our enemies?"
Absolutly not! He might make mis-judgements about who attacked us, where WMD's might be, he might even be untruthful about it. And that could get us into an unnecassary war costing thousands of soldiers lives and hundreds of civilian causulties. It could result in a quagmire that tears the nation up, cost trillions of dollars, destroys are national reputation and bankrupts our economy destroying our currency and leading to massive rises in the cost of gas and inflation and the price of food, resulting in mass starvation around the world.
But at leat the people in the oil industry made $14,000,000,000 in profits the last three months. But other then that NO we don't want some one unreliable like Barak who goes to devil church.
How do you guys even take yourselves seriously?
PARTY BEFORE COUNTRY! I'M A PROUD REPUBLICAN AND I STAND FOR REPUBLICANISM! |

He just keeps digging that hole deeper. Toast. Clueless TOAST.
Not that I'll risk the nausea to check, but anybody putting monry on how many of the Newsies will be proclaiming this an act of Global Bravery and Integrity??
BWHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaahhhhHHHH!! |

He sure couldn't wait to throw Grandma under the bus because she may have said racist thing. Heck O-rev Wright never stopped saying them. |
|
Andrew stop despairing. There is nothing to despair. The underdog HAS to take the champ to the 13th round, be beaten within an inch of his life and fight through all the dirty tricks the champ will use. Otherwise any victory will be second guessed forever. Go watch Cinderella Man.
And Obama denouncing Wright today? All part of the plan. What conversation serves Obama better - talking about religion or talking about health care? Religion. Clinton is left out of that conversation. And Obama gets to denounce a racist! How cool is that? Heck, even within the constructs of the hero's journey, Obama has now had to sacrifice a loved one. Perfect!!
http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/0 4/wright-as-a-ble.html
Hero's journey? You mean like Joseph Campbell? I guess that explains Wright's Bill Moyers interview.
Since Campbell was the inspiration for Star Wars, perhaps there is a Jar Jar Blinks connection too.

Could he have escaped again under an assumed new muirniker from Shady Oaks Asylum?? They promised to keep him Thorazined between Shock Treatments and the Lobotomy. |

Rev. Wright was in context in the pulpit, but when his hate speech was introduced to the public at large Rev. Wright became out of context. He was no longer within the sanctuary of loyal parishioners. I saw footage of him today, I believe on Britt Hume’s show, where Obama was praising Wright. He referred to him as his spiritual advisor and that Wright listened to his wife Michele’s complaints about Obama—he made several comments of endearment that portrayed a deeper relationship. If you compare and contrast Obama’s written words and speeches, it is easy to see he is not being truthful or consistent.
Obama has abandoned his pastor for political gain, and I don’t think Wright is going to take this lightly. I predict more will unfold in the coming week, and perhaps more unraveling of Obama, the man the national press has irresponsibly allowed to evolve into the “anonymous” candidate. A great commercial concept would be to create a silhouette of Obama, and ask the question who is this man backed with salient questions to emphasize Americans should not vote for someone they do not know. |
|
just posting it for informational purposes only from Team Obama.
The univeral consensus is Reverend Jeremiah Wright is an even worse "spiritual" dad to Barack Obama than Reese Bobby in Talladega Nights. |
|
All the Republicans can act all giddy over the Wright chaos, but the American people are not going to hold Barack Obama responsible for every person he's ever had an assoiciation with. Pastors, and Priests as we have seen in the news of late, can be very duplicitious people. Wright strikes me as a fellow who can act charming and godly when he wants to. He was very charming in the Bill Moyers interview, and then in front of the National Press Club he was about as obnoxious a jerk as one can be. Well, one thing we can all agree on is this Wright character is a real piece of work! There is another good article on the Wright-Obama controversey here:
Hello, Americans, my name is Zaphod Zitmeister, and I have an opinion:
In the words of another great American named Droopy Dog, Barack said, "Ya know what...THAT MAKES ME MAD!" And he booted this Jeremiah Wright clown.
Not like the first time a Pastor or a Priest has misused someone's trust. Come on now, Wright is just a jerk. You can't pin that on Obama. This is something that needs to be solved in the boxing ring. John Hagee vs. Jeremiah Wright...the loser has to shut up till the end of the election.
There is another good article on this controversey here:

Well he is right about one thing. Obama is a slick politician. But, not quite as slick as the racist pastor. It's one or the other. Either Obama is dumber than a box of rocks for not knowing his pastor is a racist loon. Or he's just another lying politician. Either choice is not good. Why do I suspect the pastor might have videos of Obama in church on the days of the controversial sermons. That might be why Obama pushed the pastor all the way to the edge of the cliff today but, still couldn't throw him over. Obama chose his words very carefully as always. He did not denounce the man. Obama only said their relationship would never be the same. Why would he hold onto this relationship ? Out of fear ?
|

About your pastor. If he wasn't crazy twenty years ago, but is crazy now, at what point did you miss the fact that he is crazy? |
|

if anyone, anywhere encounters a happy dimocrat, alert the media... |

Wright is WAY, WAY, OFF..just looking in his eyes, IT is totally apparent that this guys is a few beers shy of a six pack..He's CRAZY..and for it to have taken Barack 20 years to figure this out is unbelieveable...IF he's just catching ON, I think the DNC has a PROBLEM!!! Obama needs to be a little sharper, IF, we as a nation are willing to allow him in the White House..Seems he just has trouble fitting in with the correct people...ALL radical militia..wanting to bring harm to this nation...NO,NO,NO...Obama GIVES "SLOW LEARNER" A NEW DEFINITION..IT TAKES 20 YEARS TO GET TO KNOW SOMEBODY YOU IDOLIZE.. I DON'T THINK SO...BETTER LUCK WITH BONDING..YOU OUGHTA TRY EMBRACING YOUR WHITE SIDE..MAYBE THEY CAN TEACH YOU ABOUT LOYALTY AND TRUST.... |

started declining for Obama. I am sure the good reverend never mentioned to Obama they were going to the million man march. In fact, Obama did not have a clue the march was organized by Farakhan. As a matter of fact, Michelle vows that she too is shocked to learn that Wright and Farakhan co-authored a book and that Wright gave Farakhan an award for outstanding 'community organizer'. The news that Wright and Farakhan went to Libya together, is just as shocking as Hillary dodging sniper fire in Bosnia - both did not make headlines but they were treated as covert operations because the people involved feared for their lives. The men guarding Wright during his speech, the one's wearing black ties - were not from Nation of Islam, they were infact LDS missionaries hoping to make a connection with Wright and begin that race dialogue sactioned by Obama in his nationalized 'race' speech where he reminded us and emphasized that we don't know Wright and can not judge him because we have not walked a mile in his shoes (thanks J. Lo). This is becoming a soap oprah and really laughable if we were not actually discussing a potential presidential candiate. SERIOUSLY superdelegates need to do their patriotic duty because Obama and his mentor, make the Clintons look like Mother Theresa's protoges. |
|
submitted at the luncheon and that Bill Moyers asked in his interview of Mr. Wright none of them asked the key question.
Did you Mr. Wright, in the 20 years you new and mentored him, ever discuss these issues (USofKKK, AIDSinvention etc.) with BO in private? |
|
|
under the bus, when grammas secrets were announced to the whole country in an effort to humanize Wright the brother who is like an uncle. Obama can try his Kenyan side or his asian step dad. I think his muslim brothers and sisters may be more accepting and open to offering him aid in this time of his mourning as he loses his mentor/uncle turned villan (all in less than one month) talk about Change! I hear that muslims are required by Allah to stand by each other and defend each other from infidels. Obama should now reach out to his muslim brothers - the real ones, not Nation of Islam because Wright the good christian reverend has those in his corner. Do you think they will still vote for him? |
|
The media is reporting that Obama denounced Wright. I've checked all the news reports but I can't find anywhere he denounced Wright ? Once again he denounced what Wright said but he chose his words very carefully. I can't find where he denounced Wright. Did I miss it ?
|

that has a right brain banker to assist serving right brain blacks. Obama will NEVER be president. Did you listen to the man....even he knows it. It's okay, acceptance is the last stage before recovery and that will come when Obama loses by 45 states in Nov. |
|
Whether you like Obama or not, (I will not be voting for him nor for either of the 2 liberals running against him), he has a substantial following. I expect that his prolific fund raising will proceed without a hitch and that his friends will soon be rallying to his aid. I'm not reading any sensible comments from anyone who has any direct involvement in the black community where this is playing out. If they rally big for Obama, this election is over. All of these attacks I am reading today at TH will sound shrill and petty. The game is afoot and none of us have any idea how it is currently playing out where it matters. And we are NOT where it matters.
|
|
|
I just watched the speech. He did not denounce Wright. He denounced the statements only. I guess he figured out again how to keep the black vote. The media needs to stop lying for this guy. |
|
hahahahhahahaha!!! Diversity anyone? ahahahahahahaha Why doesn't Hillary step aside for the black man? ahahahahahahaha. Hey maybe an agnostic black woman can run next time? hahahahahhahahaha!!! Oh my stitches. Wait wait. This is what happens when Dem/libs try to get involved with Christianity! oooppppsss! They always get it wrong. hahahahahhaha!!!
Hey, wait. Do you smell smoke? It seems to be coming from the West... |
|
..about Wright. Hillary not knowing about Bill. It's all a right wing conspiracy, right?
|
|

a different story. One of true betrayal and perhaps of realizing that the company he keeps does matter. Unfortunately, Wright is not the only questionable associate for Obama. His list of friends reads like a Soprano script or a guest list for God Father's family reunion. Either way, enough doubt has been raised about Obama to make him a non-contender in the presidency. If the superdelegates overlook his cumulative list of friends/mentors/associates then voters will not over look it in November. It's despicable the people this man associates with....didn't his mother teach him? |
|
|
'I hate McCain rally'. I heard they were meeting to discuss how to revive Obama's campaign because they need McCain to loose the election. The joke is on you and the 'i hate McCain crowd'. Sorry, no can do....McCain is crusing to the whitehouse...and he really does not need your vote because all the middle of the road independents and moderate democrats of faith....just got renewed energy to oppose Obama. It's no longer about policy it's about 'anybody but Obama in the whitehouse'. Watch and learn. |
|
The Rev. Wright ordeal is done...now back to the facts...The media diagnoses every demo....the old...young...rich....poor...educated....uneducated.... bowlers, bluecollar, beer drinkers.....And somehow ALWAYS finds a way to give the advantage to Clinton. But it's time for the media to finally raise the most incredible point in the whole campaign. HILLARY HAS LOST THE SUPPORT OF AN ENTIRE RACE OF PEOPLE !!!!!!!! Do you know how incredibly sad this fact is ? Hillary Clinton (who's husband was so loved as to have been called The First Black President) has alienated the black people of America to such a degree that there is no way blacks will support her EVER. This has nothing to do with Obama !!!! Keep in mind folks....Hillary started this campaign with 82% of the black support. But as blacks learned more about her (Goldwater Girl....Against Civil Rights Act 1964...etc.) combined with her LBJ statements and Bill's minimizing of Obama (fairy tale...Jesse won S.Carolina too...etc) blacks were shocked...then incredibly offended beyond recovery. WE FEEL DECEIVED !!!! We hope that our friends of all races understand how we as blacks feel. This is the main story that needs to get out to ALL superdelegates. People across America are contacting the DNC 202-863-8000 to let them (and superdelegates) know that Hillary ABSOLUTELY KILLED HER ELECTABILTY. The truth is the truth !

What will blacks do if the Wright affair wounds Barack to the point she takes the nomination?
Of before that happens, will blacks come forward and renounce Wright and black liberation theology?
How does this play out within the black community? |
|
The question that people seem to want answered is: Is Barack an immature, liberal politician trying to get elected by promising people an even larger nanny state paid for by other people's money? Or is he an anti-American, Marxist-black-liberation theology true believer?
Does it really make a difference that we know this? Isn't the outcome pretty much the same? |
|
Hugh saith: "Obama writes about the Nation of Islam in his memoir, Dreams From My Father. How can Obama possibly expect us to believe that he didn't know that Pastor Wright esteemed Louis Farrakan? Greg Jones, are you kidding me, kidding us? Hillary lost the black vote because the black population, unbeknownst to most, is a racist population. You cannot have 90% plus of the black population voting for Obama and not Clinton and tell the rest of America that racism is not alive and well in the black population. If the numbers were 70/30, 60/40, and so forth there would be a better indication that American black voters were not being influenced by race. It is what it is, the numbers are telling a “telling” story. Again, if you look at the white votes, they are splitting their votes for Obama and Hillary, and where they differ is within the demographics of the white vote. If Obama were receiving 15% or less of the American white voters, we could make the case that white voters are racist, that is not the reality. Whites have been supporting him overwhelmingly. If Obama loses the primary or the general election, it won’t be due to his race, it will come down to character, values, and experience as all presidential elections do. |

Identity politics covered up in pandering talk and a pretty package charms people for a while (hi, Peggy Noonan!).
Then it collapses under its own contradictions and lies.
We saw this in the GOP primaries.

Kimberly, it is clear that Obama and Wright are aligned. There is enough information that corroborates this. It will affect Obama, and you will see the influence of this next Tuesday and beyond. I haven’t lost any of predictions in the outcomes of elections since Carter and Ford. And, you can make the case that this Presidential race is similar to theirs, however, I would disagree. Carter had more experience than Obama. He graduated with a degree in physics from the Naval Academy, he served in the Navy, he served one term as the governor of Georgia, and he was a businessman. And, then we have Obama—community organizer, Illinois Senator, began U.S. Senate office in January of 2006. Oh, he started campaigning in for U.S. Presidency in 2007—where is the experience in times of extreme complexity? Yes, let’s vote in the most inexperienced person of the candidates running—makes perfect sense to me!?! |

Once again you are a lone voice of sanity in a right wing world drunk with sanctimonious self-superiority.
My bet is Obama emerges from this stronger than ever. I'll bookmark this thread so I can reread it on November 5 and smile. |

Laborlawyer, book mark Tuesday, May 6. This will be the tipping point. My bet is on Hillary. |

..what ever happened to the Promise Keepers? I knew a few of those guys. They seemed sky high after those weekend sessions, and then it fizzled.
Was it another case of right-wing certitudes turning into dust? I mean, I'll give you the ideals were great. Something in the execution? Maybe an unsustainable worldview? Now that Hugh mentioned it, what the heck did happen to PK?! |

You seem dumbed down these days. Your wife leave you or something? |
|
No, the difference is that Wright threw Barack under the bus. You have it exactly wrong. Unlike virtually every politician today, Barack was too honorable to give Wright the heave-ho. And then, a few days ago, Wright started acting like a crazy religious guy.
As for the accusation that he threw his GM under the bus, it is typically usurpative and disrespectful assertion--made from ignorance and opportunism--a "false witness," so to speak. Politicians draw from their personal story, and part of that story is almost invariably some version of "forging a separate identity from parental loved ones." I understand that you and the other posters around here, unlike Barack's Grandma, have long since transcended racial shorthand.
No, Barack is unique among politicians in his refusal to sacrifice his decent friendliness for the sake of his political ambition. |
|
The people here don't understand the concept of honor. They want to win and they don't care how. They know Obama has them cold on the issues and they really do know Obama doesn't share Wright's views. What's left? Guilt by association. McCarthyism at its' finest ("are you know or were you ever....")
Will it work? It has in the past. OTOH Obama might just be on to something here. Stay tuned. |

Before we consider the Obama candidacy over lets consider what the Wright denunciation (however duplicitous) means to Obama.
By denouncing the statements of Rev. Wright, Obama is denouncing the statements of the likes of Rev. Sharpton, Rev. Jackson, Louis Farrakahn (sp) as well. Obama just kicked over a hornets nest that has just put him in the cross hairs of every race profiteer out there.
Whether you believe Obama is sincere or not, the angrier the Wrights and Sharptons get at him, the more regular Black and White America is going to like him. Let me put it this way to you, would you vote for Obama if you thought that a vote for him was a vote to shut Al Sharpton up? Would you vote for him if you thought it would erase the notion that a black man can't make it in this country no matter how hard he worked? Frankly, as disasterous as I think an Obama presidency would be (though probably no more than 8 years of Bill Clinton was) I am tempted.
My point is, if he can hold the black vote (though I'm afraid he just lost a lot of street cred), and draw more whites with the absolution/shut up sharpton vote, the presidency is his. |
|
Not to mention, it takes the Wright issue off the table. Any attempt at associating him to the message of Wright will be seen as even more below the belt than it was before. I can picture an ad saying:
"For twenty years, Obama sat in a pew listening to this man: [Wright sermon sound bite], but now Obama is shocked that he said this [Press club sound bite]. Does Obama believe this now [soundbite of denuciation] or did he believe this then [sound bite from earlier praise]. Obama: What will he believe next?"
That would be a great effective ad for republicans but a cheap dirty, swift boating of a Willy Horton ad to everybody else - and frankly they'd be right. There are times where you have to just take a man at his word on ancillary things and just debate the issues. On issues alone he loses, on race he wins walking away. |
|
the Revrund under the bus. His CLUELESS political TIN EAR comes way too late to hold any believablity. Just doesn't wash. The delicate Michelle, made of tougher, angrier stuff, is going to let slip--in one of those yummy Michelle off teleprompter moments--how Wright's now a victim, blah-blah-blah...You watch. I know my Girl! She's not gonna stomp the lovable Rev while he's down. Which, if it weren't politics, would be to her angry-at-America credit.
LL...Your innocence and naivite on human nature is sometimes darn near charming. But, then you have that nasty small way of tempering the charm with EEeeeeeeeekkKK "Racism" and EEeeeeeeekkkKK "McCarthyism". Pity. And, unlike some of your pygmie buds around here, I think you just might believe that airhead swill.
McCarthyism...!! Too cute.

|
|
.. is the phony baloney idea that racism is over, that Reeps are past those bad old days, and are now basically color-blind. Naive, charming, quaint, and, like other forms of self-deception, irreal blather unworthy of manhood. |
|
..and I'm quite sure Barack could give a whit about whether or not it "washes" with the likes of you. The media sewing-circle may chatter about his "tin-ear," mapping out the political dynamics like breathless little gossips, but fair-mindedness prevails in the end.
Two things I have learned in my time under the sun: 1) you CAN BS a BSer and, 2) men of decent character are not necessarily capable of recognizing character in others. |

We got a glimps of Barry's concept of honor when he told the world that the grandmother that raised him was no different than his (newly revealed) race baiting pastor, friend and political sounding board. Just dripping with honor. I'm also curious what issues Barry has us cold on. Raising taxes, increasing capital gains tax, surrender to the jihadists, opening up the borders .....your right, McCain should just quit!
|
|
|
I don't know who you think believes racism doesn't exist. Of course it exists. Racism is universal and color blind. There's all sorts of racism out there but that isn't the question or even the real issue. The question is, how can a country be governed in such a way that the effects of racism are minumized. I believe that a government that adheres to conservative (i.e. classical liberal) principles does that best. You disagree and think the government can legislate "tolerance" and "equality" but I take the conservative view that the law and the markets need to be colorblind. Of course you confuse that with racism (and thereby reinforce your view of racism being endemic) but that really only trivializes racism. |

Hewitt asks "Is Obama a dupe, or just duplicitous?"
It may be determined after this posting that I fall into one the noted categories, however....
In my experience, it is more than plausible that Sen Obama just wasn't an ardent attendee or participant of/in his church... And I offer this without judgment, as this likely applies to most of us.
How is it we applies such scrutiny to the issue of Reverend Wright, a reckless paster in my opinion, yet somehow accept that the Catholic Church's habitual molestation of our Country's innocent was somehow isolated.... Nobody knew nothing... Just "A Few" Men of The Cloth... Neither Pope, Patriarch, Bishop, Cardinal nor Primate.... NO ONE.
If the response is going to be "Well, they're not running for the highest office in the world."... What? Help me understand how the most predatory men of our time, and the institution that protected them, should not be a higher priority than the Reverend Wright, yet, with absolute certainty, Conservatives will say "Stop attacking the church!"
While I am in NO WAY a "Defender" of Reverend Wright, it is increasingly disgusting how so called Conservative Christians are selective in their outrage.

Your first point we are in agreement on. Clearly the primary reason for Obama's relationship to Rev. Wright was political expediency. Becoming a member of a very large and influential church is rule number one of politicking. Obama's church gave him both credibility in the "Black Community" and an organization to help him get out the vote. I like you, doubt he attended very often or paid very much attention when he did.
Your second point, however is outrageously flawed in it's logic. Wright publicly said all of these outrages things (if you consider the pulpit public). Catholic priests privately preyed on their innocent parishinors. Wrights views and opinions are and have been widely known, the priest's molestations were not. Even if there was a politician that was friendly with one such priest, your analogy would still fail unless said priest proclaimed that he was a child molester every mass. I can defend niether priests for what they did, nor the pastor for what he said and obviously molestation is the greater of the two evils (which is clearly why you bring it up) but the one is in no way analogous to the other given their public/open and private/hidden natures. |
|
"Catholic priests privately preyed on their innocent parishinors [sic]. Wrights views and opinions are and have been widely known, the priest's molestations were not."
The fact that The Catholic Church was successful in their efforts to protect predators does not give credence to your argument. My point was that the Outrage of many regarding Reverend Wright appears to be unbalanced.... And you're correct..... Not analogous.... I should not have mentioned the Catholic Church. My apology
What is perhaps more relevant are the comments made by popular Religious Leaders (Falwell, Hagee, Graham & Robertson) and their continued relationship with certain party leaders and/or representatives.

Do I mention your predilictions? I'm just having fun at your "honorable" party who use racial division and class envy and then whines in wonderment when it blows up in your face. That is funny to me. And you "seem" intelligent as we've discussed before but the outcome of your thought process equals "dumb". |
|
you write, "...yet somehow accept that the Catholic Church's habitual molestation of our Country's innocent was somehow isolated." and, "Help me understand how the most predatory men of our time..."
I would like to know more about this habitual molestation. How many priests have been convicted of molestation compared to how many priests serve the Catholic Church in America? You must have the numbers to make such statements.
Also, explain why these priests should be considered the most predatory men of our time.
It seems to me the men who operate Planned Parenthood are in contention for that title, since they refuse to report the rapes of the many underage girls on whom these Planned Parenthood men are performing abortions. That is just one instance of what, since it is institutionalized protection of molestors, many would consider more predatory than the few Catholic priests involved in molestation. Also, Planned Parenthood assists in concealing rape to, unlike the Catholic Church, make millions of dollars.
Just believe you should think before you write ridiculous statements. |
