Just Better and Better
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:10 PM
Slate's delegate counter notes that "Going into this evening's results, Clinton needs an average margin of victory of 16 points in every remaining primary to tie Obama's pledged delegate total."  Otherwise, of course, she's got to convince superdelegates to vote un-democratically, i.e., against the expressed wishes of a majority of Democratic voters.

The only method to secure such a result, it would seem, is to offer the superdelegates a very strong reason to decide that Obama is objectively unsuitable for the job or unlikely to win it, which in turn requires the running of a highly negative campaign.  If the gambit succeeds, Hillary gets the nomination and generates even more ill-will among key Democrat constituencies she'd need in the fall.  If it fails, she's still worked Barack over pretty nicely for John McCain, and generated plenty of discord in the Democratic Party.

If I were a Democrat, who had started the year with two candidates I loved and every confidence that victory in November was a near certainty, I'd be ripping my hair out by the roots about now.

If you look at a lot of polls Obama gets the majority of the Rep cross over vote and the independent vote.

Hillary gets the core Dem vote by a small margin. That is one argument for Hillary with the Super Delegates.

As Hillary has finally learned how to use a fear appeal against Obama, suddenly he looks a lot more vulnerable to McCain and Rep 527s. That is another good reason Super Delegates may vote for her. Obama is much easier to swift boat. His image is pliable. Hillary is well known and been hit with every attack possible in the past. She is the more electable of the 2.

The Obama phenomena is confined mainly to the left wing of the Dem party and Independents who are snookered by a lot of image and a lack of detail. The later can be moved in McCain's direction with the right campaign.

10-15% of Obama's vote is from Reps who will vote for McCain in the fall. The Dem primaries are missleading.

Lastly and most importantly. Obama was getting the late deciders who did not really prefer either candidate but who just wanted one who could win. That has all changed now that Hillary has put the first real pin pricks in the Obama bubble. Hillary will keep attacking Obama, maybe she will do it well and maybe not but one thing is clear. Obama can be attacked successfully and that scares the Super Delegates a lot more than primary voters.
