Thanks to Those Who Keep Our Independence
Posted by: Tom DeLay at 9:21 AM

First off, Happy Independence Day to all of the Townhall readers out there. I know many of you, like me, spend the holiday with friends and family enjoying apple pie and fireworks.  This is also a time for us to celebrate the bravery of our men and women in the Armed Forces, and their courage to keep us free.  My wife introduced me to this new campaign to show our support for the troops.  It’s very easy, but meaningful at the same time.

It’s shocking how many times I have approached a soldier to thank him, and to see that he is embarrassed by it.  I’m sure most of it is due to their humble nature, but I can’t stop thinking that in this day and age, when cynicism and indifference seem to be laudable character traits, that maybe they’re just not used to the positive attention.  Either way, it’s best to shake their hand and give them a sincere “thank you” but this is a terrific gesture just the same.

Have a happy, and safe Independence Day.

Thank You
When my son came home from his first tour in Iraq, many people stopped and thanked him. It embarrassed him, yes, but it also encouraged him and confirmed why he was doing this.
When he returned from his second tour, people didn't thank him and some would look away and ignore him when he was in uniform. He had just had two good friends die in front of him and another grieviously injured, THEN is when he needed the encouragement and to know that the people of this country stood behind him and were proud and grateful for his service.

One Possible Explanation
It could be some service members are embarrassed because they aren't all that supportive of this particular war effort. They spend most of their mental energy with one over-riding thought: to protect their fellow soldiers and keep them from being killed. They simply don't think much about the larger implications of their mission, and so are surprised when they get back home and hear a heartfelt thank-you.

My son is an Air Force doctor now taking his residency in Fort Belvoir. His e-mails end with this sentiment:

"Caring For Those in Harm's Way"

I get it. I hope y'all do too.
