Elections Abroad Show Conservative Tide
Posted by: Michael Medved at 6:34 PM

With Newsweek running a cover story on “The Post American World” and Democrats complaining that President Bush destroyed our influence abroad, it’s instructive to consider a recent string of election successes for foreign candidates who support our values and our policies.

In Canada , Mexico , Germany , Denmark , Greece , Ukraine and France the parties identified as “pro-American” swept to important victories. Most recently, the conservative candidate in Italy , Silvio Burlesconi, won a smashing triumph to return to power and Rome elected its first right-wing mayor in 50 years. Then in local elections throughout Britain , the Conservatives thumped the ruling Labor Party, 44% to 24%, and turned out the anti-American mayor of London , “Red Ken” Livingstone. The global trend favors politicians who back free markets and welcome U.S. leadership—hardly a sign of a “Post American World.”

Conservative March
The reason why conservatives have done well in other countries is they are essentially moderate republicans or conservative democrats. If most of our country is generally acknowledged to be middle of the road, why is it surprising that the same woudn't be the case for other countries.

The difference is of course that most other countries have parliamentary systems, so these shifts are much quicker. Italy now has a conservative in power. Well its only the tenth government in eight yerars.

Our republican party though has become a weird hybrid of varying exteme public positions with corrupt and cynical public officials who laugh at those positions. They usually will fail.

wright and conservatives
i have a hard time imagining your being able to marshall another attack on obama that would be more intense than the one that you have levelled against hinm for the past two and one half weeks./. guess what. he has survived it . wuith flying colors. now unlwess you can find 6 o 7 rel bodied buried in his back yard with his fingerprints on the shvel, he doesnt have to prove anything about his ability to take it. suppose you can find a pt boat someplace.

We need to emphasize the conservative
Especially the sane and sober fiscal conservative part of the message. Followed with a common sense federalist, back off and stay out of people's lives conservative message. The Bush Administration had too much of the big government stuff with too much intrusion (or at least the perception of too much intrusion).

I am not sure other countries are voting for America as opposed to voting their own self interest. But the fact that they are recognizing it is in their self interest to vote more conservative is a good sign.

And as the Corner reports, when interviewed about the American century being over, Tom Wolfe declared he anticipated another 800 years (at least) of American exceptionalism. I agree that selling American short in the long term is probably not a good idea. http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=NTI0MTUzMGM2YTRmM jJjN2IyMTY3ODU4YmEyMGQxMGI=

Boris He's the man!
I go to a forum occasionally at The Guardian which is a very leftie paper.

The people there from London have no clue what hit them. The liberals gave him no chance but Boris kicked but.

There is an untapped conservative tide in this country that the media and our "politicians" try very hard to deny. We are waking up and the pendulum will swing our way eventually.

We need term limits to clean out the wastrels in Washington. Since they wont vote themselves out of a job we need to attack all incumbants in every primary election. No politician can live in the sesspool of DC for 15 years and not end up polluted.

Politicians are like diapers - they need to be changed often and for the same reasons.

Medved's partly right
True, there are many examples of rightward voting around the world. But you'd be hardpressed to find an example where they are thinking about America in their votes. It's local stuff, shifting winds. And "conservative" over here still means an adequate social safety net, about where the Dems are in America.

Europe's shift to the hawkish right:
a nice big wild coincidence that smug little conservatives are willing to dismiss, rather than thank the leadership of the Bush Administration.

See! We DO export something.
Unfortunately, we shouldn't be exporting it all.

Nice Stereotyping, Kimberly!
Medved didn't say that conservatives in Europe are exactly the same as conservatives in the U.S. He said that "pro-American" political parties have been voted into power in those countries.

BTW, since when do conservatives in the U.S. belong exclusively to one party?

Obama's new pastor, same as Wright...
Well, this might pass with Democrats, but it will NOT fly with independents and republicans!
Maybe Obamba's church serves bottles of Peppermint Schnopps at communion instead of wine? Spiked with mescaline?

Obama's new pastor, Otis Moss, also states in the sermon:

- “Jesus has a soft spot for thugs.”
- “God is always using thugs to do God’s work.”
- “Everyone has a little bit of thug in them.”
- "Noah was a “thug” who “was drinking much gin and juice and got drunk on the eve of reconstruction.”
- Abraham “pimped his own wife.”
- Jacob was a “hustler” who “stole his own brother’s birthright.”
- Moses was a “thug” and “if he got mad would give you a royal beatdown.”
- Sampson was a “thug” and a “player.”
- David was a “thug,” a “shot caller,” and a “player,” and a man after God’s own heart.
“Jesus is on the cross being lynched between two thugs. The moment of execution, the moment of murder, Jesus, the son of God, is hanging out with thugs.”

Interesting.
What's Bush's approval rating/favorable polling in those countries?

Just asking.
