Geraghty has the "Tonight Show" transcript:
FRED THOMPSON: It hasn't been that long really. We've done it a few months, where a lot of people have been working on it since they were in the choir in high school. So we're where we need to be right now, and that's one of the things I wanted to talk to you about. I'm running for President of the United States. JAY LENO: All right. (Applause.) FRED THOMPSON: Thank you. JAY LENO: I'm excited. Wow. FRED THOMPSON: Thank you.
Ta-duhhhh! He's funny and charming, as usual, and I guess the fact that I and everyone else is doing a whole post on him alone is probably proof that skipping the debate wasn't so bad after all? Update: He's got a much more presidential suit on this time.
Update: Okay, not a whole lot of enthusiasm in the announcement, there. But I kind of dig the ultra-relaxed, confident vibe, which is what I think that's indicative of more than boredom.
Heh:
Most people don't start paying attention to these elections until they get a little closer. They treat politicians kind of like the dentist -- they don't have anything to do with them until they have to, until the election is near. (Laughter.) Update: Watch Fred's video, here. It was a bit hangy for me at first; probably getting hammered, but it's working now.
Fred "intends to run for president." Is that like how Craig "intends" to resign?" Ha.
Update:

I think it's interesting that he's sticking with the blue-and-gold motif instead of red, white, and, blue. I was wondering if he would, or if it was just the scheme of the I'mWithFred site and would disappear. Actually highly unorthodox to use anything other than red, white, and, blue.
The blue-and-gold is stately-looking, and I appreciate some originality, but I think I would have gone darker with the gold, so it wouldn't look washed out.
Update: Fred on Leno:

Security: Vote for a war then run away to act and lobby while you watch as the Republican party loses its brand for national security.
Unity: Play tappy-toes with the lobby for tort lawyers while you sell out conservatives, the gun industry, and business.
Prosperity: Fight harder for campaign finance reform than tax relief in 1998, 1999, and 2000 launching the US into a recession.
Trotting out this Nixon era, crony, and his abortion lobbying credentials ain't going to win in 2008.

The vitriol spewing forth already should be very encouraging for Fred Thompson.
If he REALLY didn't matter, we wouldn't get this kind of a show from "open minded liberals".
This is going to be fun. |
|
|
dragging his beagles around with him, acting like a homeboy that's never been a Washington insider! |
|
|
Man that picture of him on the main page of TH, is ugly. I have joked in the past about his uglyness, but man o man, that man is ugly. Besides being a schmuck, he's ugly to boot. |

Fred's honeymoon will last a few months.
How will He answer the questions about lobby work for Bertrand Aristide, the tobacco industry, the Teamsters' pension fund and other such humanitarian causes:

How will he answer all kinds of nagging abortion questions:

Finally, the ick factor will kick in when people realize that his wife is younger than his children.
Of course, he's in good company!
Here the rest of the "Family Values" crowd: Sen. John McCain (affair, divorce), former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (affair, divorce, affair, divorce), and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (divorce, affair, nasty divorce).
Even Thompson's red truck is a fake.....

Again, one great measure of success is the stature and number of your enemies. In Fred's case, he's doing great.
I initially questioned Freddy T's choice to skip the debate and to wait so long to get in, but if you saw the interview when it aired you should realize that he killed it and that choosing Leno over the debate gave him twenty minutes on national television all to himself. Leno gave Thompson so much time that they nearly bumped Jerome Bettis on the eve of the NFL season.
By the way, Leno actually inviting Thompson onto his show and giving him a chance to speak, is just another reason why I like him and it shows why Jay's clobbered Letterman for twelve years running. |

--snip-- The blue-and-gold is stately-looking, and I appreciate some originality, but I think I would have gone darker with the gold, so it wouldn't look washed out. --snip--
You should get the inside scoop on the motif from all the wrecked careers this guy and his desperate bimbo left in their wake. |

If we're going to play TV critic games (and we might as well with a candidate with no administrative or substantial political experience like this one) than lets act like a casting director after an audition. "Hmmm. Style's ok but he's too ugly." If I want a liberal pretending to be conservative I would cast KenDoll Mitt Romney for the role of 'exciting new face on a presidential candidate'. Fred looks like an old frog. I keep thinking of 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou', "Them sireens turned Pete into a toad!" when I see this guy. Dumping the debate for Leno underlined what a lightweight he is. Up against Dragon Lady, day after day he will turn off every swing voter in the country with his baggy eyes, barrel-like physique and infundibulum jowls. Fred had his boomlet but then wasnt able to turn himself into a brand people trust and want to choose over the others. Partly its just his sheer lack of any political accomplishment or substance but also that he doesnt have a theme people can rally to. his entry in the debate last night-- a stiff, formless and forgettable paid spot gave him a presence that accented his inability to get on the playing field. If the ad had attacked Hillary Clinton's Chicom cash and reminded us how high the stakes were and saluted the other debaters it might have worked but it turned out to be a big,fat nothing. I hope he hasnt burned his bridges at 'Law And Order'. |

Bring out the red truck? Oh, the one he rented to facilitate the image of him as a populist, while in fact he is a long time Washington insider. Real genuine. . .
The race ought to be between Rudy, Mitt and Mike if you ask me. Fred has not done one thing to earn his place in the top tier. Arthur Branch is the one with the poll numbers. |
|
|
Can change the motto from RUN FRED RUN! to GO FRED GO! |
|
The longest tease is modern politics is mercifully over.
Finally we can expose his lobbist past, his Nixon ties and the age of his child bride. |
|
and his campaign has been highly unorthodox.
Personally I think it's refreshing to see someone detract from the same, tired old playbook. But whether it will prove to be a more effective campaign strategy reminds to be seen. |
|
|
All right, I admit that I'm a litle biased as I grew up in Tennessee. But, dang, how can you not like the man? This is a race between Fred, Rudy, and Mitt ( McCain's toast ) Quite frankly, I'm good with all of them, but I really lean to Fred as he appears to be the most genuine of the bunch. Bring out the red truck, Fred!! |
