Gulag Archipelago
is a great work. A frightening work because it was not fiction.

As a writer he was not in the same league as Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, or Chekhov, but he was very good writer (certainly a worthy successor in the Russian tradition and one of the top tier of living writers) and his subject matter was very important.

The First Circle / Profound Loss
This is a sad day. Solzhenitsyn was a moral giant and great writer. His refusal to stop writing and being published after the Soviet government no longer found him useful (i.e., after "One Day In the Life of Ivan Denisovich") was incredibly courageous and arguably contributed to the eventual fall of Communist Party rule in Russia. As to his talent, I would rank the 50 or so pages from "The First Circle," in which Solzhenitsyn takes the reader on an eye-popping tour of the mind of Josef Stalin, up among the greatest literature of all time. I feel profound loss.

Non fiction matters too.
I suspect many years from now, people will rely on Gulag Archipelago to know what took place in the Soviet Union. A modern day Thucydides perhaps?

Solzhenitsyn - a truly honest man
My prayers are that God comforts his widow, three sons, and grandchildren this Christmas. May they rejoice that this man has at last entered into full peace and the presence of God.

Noone agrees with all this man's opinions (so what). But he spoke honestly withno thot to "fashion". Thus, his assessments (notably his 1978 Harvard speech-available online) might be useful to view every now and then.

The lack of comments makes me wonder - how many of my teen daughter's generation even know who Alexander Solzhenitsyn was (is)?

My daughter and son will not be one of the culturally deficient who does not know who this hero (notably in his expose' of the Gulags) IS!
