Will Conservative Leaders Secede From GOP?

It turns out, much that has been reported about a possible 3rd party conservative challenge to the GOP has been incorrect. At least, that's what I am surmising, based on my interview last night with a reliable source, conservative leader Richard Viguerie.
First, Viguerie told me that the meeting was not about stopping Rudy Giuliani, specifically. This differs from early accounts, which implied conservatives would only launch this effort if Giuliani were to win the nomination (this makes me wonder if this rumor was spread by anti-Giuliani forces).
One also wonders if Newt Gingrich's decision not to run, coupled with Fred Thompson's disappointing meeting with a group of conservative leaders known as the Arlington Group last week contributed to this decision. Could it be that conservative leaders were hoping to avoid starting a 3rd party, but Fred floundered and then Newt didn't get in?
The timing is curious.
When I first heard of this effort, I assumed it was a short-term ad hoc effort to stop Giuliani. My guess was that conservatives would field a washed-up conservative "sacrificial lamb" who might get a couple percentage points of the vote (just to make their point).
But what Viguerie described to me last night is a new permanent realignment, in which a separate conservative party would secede from the GOP. Of course, this has much more serious implications than a short-term scenario ...
Will it happen? Is it just a threat? It's too early to tell. But this could get interesting.
Update: 8:53 - Blogs for Fred Thompson notes this isn't the first call for a 3rd party.
Update: 9:54 - NRO has this excerpt from Hardball: Tony Perkins on Rudy.

Get rid of the xian crazies and build up a libertarian center.
What other chance is there of stopping the Democrats' spending of my money without bringing in a christofascist state? |
|

All this is going to do is elect more democrats. |

Or often enough. Maybe if you keep yelling to us conservatives that we are selfish bigots who take our ball and go home when we can't get our way while telling us to get the hell out... I don't know, tell us again why Hillary is so bad? |
|
Am I seeing the GOP break up right before my eyes? Are we on the verge of seeing some conservatives exit and make their own party? WE NEED BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT WINGS OF THE PARTY TO FLY! There will always be a right wing and a left wing of every party. We need to come together in order to defeat Hillary. Are we nuts??? Hillary's unfavorable rating is 50%. That is way to high. And some of us our talking about breaking up? I am a conservative Christian who would like to see someone else other than Rudy go against Hillary in the general election. BUT, if Rudy does win the nomination, I will vote for him over Satan, I mean Hillary.

But the GOP has lived on for about 145 years. Long after Hillary is dead and gone, a third party of "PRINCIPLES" will live on.....Enough with the "What if Hillary get's elected panic!" America survived Wilson,FDR,LBJ,Nixon,Clinton, and the "Bush Dynasty". We will survive Hillary, and a third party will get stronger. The EXISTING GOP may not survive, but history will call it suicide from within. As the GOP burns to the ground, watch their politicians migrate to the Democratic party where they FEEL most comfortable! |

Rephrased, the GOP is on a path that will only get more Democrats elected. After all, they keep nominating democrats and furthering the Democrats' agenda. Try running Republicans again and maybe the landslide victory that is there for the taking will materialize. Conservatives are not wrecking the party, we are trying to save it. We don't need the GOP. We aren't wanted, we outnumber them and we are more organized. |

Excellent comment. Nails it exactly. |

Not sure where you come to that conclusion. I agree it is a mistake to have candidates/elected officials such as Ted Stephens and Arlen Spector. However, Rudy Giuliani is a conservative on issues that matter; just check his Club for Growth report card. As for the issue that most people being up in arms about (abortion); at least with him there is a chance he will nominate pro-life judges. Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama would make sure all the judges they appoint are pro-abortion. If Rudy Giuliani is our nominee the Evangelicals should embrace him, they have more in common than the opposition. And at least with him terrorist will continue to be on the run and their taxes will not increase. |

Pasadena Phil,
Several weeks ago, when the Israel-hating Ron Paul nuts were flooding the Townhall boards with 'blame America for terrorism' drivel, you heroically kicked some of them in the teeth by making the case for the importance of fighting Islamic Jihad.
Now, it sounds like you don't think it's not that big of a big deal if the Clintonistas are back in the White House conducting foreign policy with James Carville giving advice about whom to nominate for the next Supreme Court vacancy. |

Pasadena Phil,
I should have written, "Now, it sounds like you don't think it's that big of a big deal if..." |

Democrats want to do it in Iraq, sounds like some Pubs want to do it with illegal aliens. Pander to citizens of other countries illegally in our country in the vain hope they will vote for Republicans. Throw out such notions as the rule of law and citizenship, surrender and win!
There is a huge majority of American citizens waiting for someone to pledge to uphold the laws and secure the borders, let's ignore them some more. |

"Israel-hating Ron Paul nuts"
That's a bit of a slander. There is a difference between "hating Israel" and thinking that maybe we should look out for our own interests first and not fight another nations battles for them. |

Hillary = Rudy. This is a battle for president among democrats. If the GOP is not going to present a Republican candidate, close up shop. Both Hillary and Rudy have exactly the same stance on national defense: boiler plate status quo in Iraq and open borders. Neither believes in defending our sovereignty. They are both fighting terrorism in the interest of one-world corporatists, not American citizens. If Hillary gets elected, it won't be because of conservatives and it won't matter. The next Congress is going to be more conservative than this one and we may even have a new party to contest the monopoly of the current United Establishment Party. |
|
It's simply not true. There are miles of difference between the kind of president Rudy would be compared to Hillary. He's not conservative enough for me personally, but he IS NOT even close to being like the left wing nut, Hillary. Let's get real about it, folks.
Hopefully the GOP will nominate the best man running - Romney of course. But if Rudy ends up with the nomination I will absolutely vote for him.
The GOP can live through a Rudy presidency. What makes some social conservatives think they can stand alone as a party? Wish it were true, but I just don't see it.

Conservatives can nominate a conservative. All it takes is not acting like sheep and getting herded into nominating a northeast liberal. 49% will never vote for Hillary, only 60% voted last time. Turnout was the difference. Give Americans a chance to vote for someone who WILL secure the border and watch turnout soar. Americans want their government to fulfill its most basic responsibility.
The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.

Chuck Baldwin's article, "The Fix Is In" is so on target. GLOBALRESEARCH.CA has a great story on the "Warheads" that only made it as far as Lousiana last week and why? The MSM propaganda machine is doing a scary job of keeping voters in the dark! |
