TIME Gives Glenn Beck 'The Limbaugh Treatment'
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:59 AM
Glenn Beck is the cover story of the new TIME magazine.  This is, no doubt, a sign of his amazing rise in popularity -- and his effectiveness.  But it seems like I've seen this all before ...

Hmmmmmm.....

They seem to be giving him The Limbaugh Treatment!

This means Glenn Beck has arrived
The only thing remaining to establish Beck as a stable fixture of American life is a parody sendup in Mad Magazine.

Congratulations to Glenn Beck.

The Pravda press can't stand it
when someone succeeds at bringing the truth to the American people - because they gave that aspiration up years ago.

The Limbaughs and Becks of the world aren't nearly as vitriolic as people like Keith Olbermann and Janeane Garofalo. (And Limbaugh and Beck at least have a sense of humor - as evidenced by Beck's self-deprecating cover photo on TIME.)

The demonization of the American public is not only killing the old-line media (boo-effing-hoo, who cares?), but it is damaging Obama's Presidency, by characterizing all those who oppose his policies (and theirs) as "racists," "homophobes," "Nazis" "warmongers" and God knows what all else.

I don't know that I care about Obama's presidency being damaged, but it seems to me that HE and THEY would.

Anybody actually read the article? Can you point out a single statement that is untrue or unfair?

The right wing should be congratulating itself. After 20 years of hammering away at the "liberal media," you have them completely cowed. "Balance" in media means giving a Democratic viewpoint followed by a birther. The ABC Evening News came right out and said so, just this month: "the media loves a good fight -- even when the charges are unfounded."

So now we have Time magazine giving its stamp of legitimacy to Glenn Beck, of all people. Don't forget its fawning cover photo and story on Ann Coulter not so long ago. The media and the political culture continue marching to the right.

...in a different spin, but he's essentially corrrect. Massive publicity is good publicity. People become curious of the phenomenon and investigate further. By doing so, the people discover the truth of the matter for themselves. So, yes, in a left-handed way, Time mag has done Glen Beck a tremendous service even with the mocking cover photo. Vlad understands the trend and honestly expresses his regrets from his perspective. Other lefties here, like Wendy above, just throw a hissy fit of hateful vile and personal attacks - very infantile - but great to behold from the right perspective.

Glenn is a bit of a character. He's lifted the skirt on this administration and has come into his own.

What bothers me is the headline: "Glenn Beck and the angry style of American politics". Uh, angry? They should have Chris Matthews (his head is about to explode every 5 mins on his show), Olbermann (personal attacks on every show towards his competition), and Maddow. Those folks are the mis-placed anger. But we all know Time/Newsweek et al will cover for those fringe-lefties as if they're "mainstream".

One final note: shouldn't it have been Pres Obama on the Rush cover: "Is Barak Obama Good for America?"

So tell us what specifically was untrue or unfair.

What do you think of the larger point, that in the sixties, Time didn't put the John Birch Society on the cover. The Birchers were beyond the pale, even for William F. Buckley. But today, extremists like Beck and Coulter are given cover stories that treat them like legitimate voices. And the spectrum of conventional political thought slides further to the right.

vlad,
In response to your question, I didn't read the article.

But you offer a false choice between conservative bias and liberal bias.

You claim that "Time magazine [is] giving its stamp of legitimacy to Glenn Beck." For better or worse, Glenn Beck has a huge audience and has had notable influence on current affairs. A Time cover story doesn't offer any additional legitimacy - Beck earned it on his own. Time is only recognizing his relevance (again, based on his impact).

It is absurd to think that covering big names is evidence of conservative bias. To not do so would evidence liberal bias.

I'm not arguing liberal bias or conservative bias. I'm arguing that in times past, people like Glenn Beck would have been dismissed as extremists. There was a segment of the population in the thirties who sincerely believed that Franklin Roosevelt was building camps in Alaska for those who opposed his policies - they were crackpots, and it's nearly forgotten now because it wasn't covered at the time, for the obvious reason that they were nuts.

Beck's "influence" is just self-fulfilling prophecy in the age of cable TV and the internet. Get people wound up and it's a story. Time magazine covers stories. Ergo, Beck is influential.

Now, there are leftist kooks, too, but liberals don't generally get themselves all wound up over imaginary issues. You may not have liked protests against the Iraq war but you have to admit, the Iraq war was a legitimate topic of controversy. There are very few liberal talk radio shows, not because liberalism isn't popular, but because liberals don't care to listen to people shouting at each other. So "leftist anger" isn't much of a niche market. "Right wing anger" most definitely is, and people are cashing in, in ways that weren't possible years ago.

Notice how conservatives veer back and forth between "Oh, Beck is just an entertainer selling soap," and "Yes, Glenn! Tell it like it is!" You can't have it both ways. Leno and Letterman are entertainers who will always tell jokes about the current president. Sometimes people get upset when it's their side being mocked, but nobody has ever mistaken Leno or Letterman as a legitimate political voice. You can't say that about Beck (Coulter, Limbaugh, etc.).

In the 1970 Georgia
governors race, pitting Jimmah Carter and Carl Sanders, the "racially pure", Jimmah was hellbent to win that governorship. But first, lets fast forward to Sept. of 2009', the "racially pure", Jimmah's primary duty is to tell us just who is a "racist" and who is not! His latest declaration, was of course, Rep. Joe Wilson(R-SC) who had the temerity to shout "you lie" to Mullah obama, "peace be upon him". That is a dead give away, because what Joe, really said was "you lie, boy". So now, lets go back in yesteryear, to that governors race, in 1970. Two of Jimmah's top campaign staffers were spotted distributing grainy photos of his opponent Carl Sanders arm-in-arm celebrating with what? With two BLACK MEN!!! Yes! Sanders was a part owner of the Atlanta Hawks, and in that photo he was celebrating a victory with those two players! You see, the "Racially pure", Jimmah' hoped to depress the white vote, with those pictures. But lets not stop there, the "racially pure" Jimmah', in a leaflet noted that Sanders had paid tribute to Martin Luther King! Yes, he did!! Also, the "racially pure" Jimmah' criticized Sanders, a former Governor, for preventing Alabama Gov., noted segregationist George Wallace from speaking on George state property. "I don't think it was right for the Gov. to try to please a group of ultra-liberals in Washington", said, the "racially pure" Jimmah! Upon receiving the endorsement of former democrat Gov. Lester Maddox, the "racially pure" Jimmah', praised the life long segregationist, "He has brought a standard of forthright expression and personal honesty to the Governors office, and I HOPE TO LIVE UP TO HIS STANDARD".

Continued........
cottoneyed writes: Thursday, September, 17, 2009 2:52 PM
continued............
But the "racially pure" Jimmah, can turn on a dime, and did when he ran for Prez. He became the great race healer. He carefully cultivated a few black leaders in Georgia and earned a reputation as a racially tolerant governor who appointed a few black judges and other tokens in state government.

So you see, who better to judge racism in America than the "racially pure" Jimmah Carter. I guess the old adage, it takes one to know one, fits here, right Jimmah! That bout' right, all you "racially pure" leftist squatters here at Th.

"So tell us what specifically was untrue or unfair."

You are kidding, right? The very title of the article tells you the direction of the article.

Time could have saved the space, four pages, and just written,

"Glen Beck is a fat, weeping, loudmouth who is raking in millions of dollars from disenfranchised Southern racists."

Or, to quote directly from the article,

"No one has a better feeling for this mood, and no one exploits it as well, as Beck. He is the hottest thing in the political-rant racket, left or right. A gifted entrepreneur of angst in a white-hot market. A man with his ear uniquely tuned to the precise frequency at which anger, suspicion and the fear that no one's listening all converge."

"A gifted entrepreneur of angst in a white-hot market." The author could have written the more popular, "red-hot", but chose "white" instead. "White angst". Clever.

Time could have devoted the other 3.75 pages to how Michelle Obama's arms have made sleeveless shirts popular Fall attire.

Save your gibberish for Kos. I see through you...and Time Magazine.

vlad,
"...people like Glenn Beck would have been dismissed as extremists."

When I first saw Beck on Fox (I never heard his radio show before), I was skeptical due to his flamboyant style. When he cried, I was more skeptical (emotionality has that effect on me). But he is not extreme in his views. One must take the time to hear what he is actually saying. He is a muckraker. He follows a classically liberal ideology. Maybe classical liberalism is considered "extremist" in our times.

You say that "liberals don't generally get themselves all wound up over imaginary issues" but that ignores the fraudulent claims of "racism," and liberal media personalities like Ed Schultz and Keith Olbermann.

"There are very few liberal talk radio shows, not because liberalism isn't popular, but because liberals don't care to listen to people shouting at each other."

In my experience, that is true. Liberals prefer to hear themselves speak, to feel good about agreeing with like minds. To put it less facetiously, such generalities cannot be validly asserted. During Bush's two terms, the left was often shrill.

"Notice how conservatives veer back and forth between "Oh, Beck is just an entertainer selling soap," and "Yes, Glenn! Tell it like it is!" You can't have it both ways."

I don't think that claim is usually made by conservatives. Beck does use hyperbole to make many of his points. He is being entertaining to make his points.

"The only thing remaining to establish Beck as a stable fixture of American life is a parody sendup in Mad Magazine."

I'm not sure they'd be able to do so.

A big problem confronting comedy today is that the antics of the right-wing are almost impossible to satirize. Colbert tries to do so with O'Reilly, but some large part of his audience doesn't realize that he's doing satire. Jon Stewart more and more often simply shows what the wingnut he's making fun of does, and then sits there with a stunned look on his face; there's just nothing more to be said. Tina Fey didn't mock Palin, she simply reproduced her, and said exactly the same thing that Palin said. Comedy gold, Jerry.

That said, here's a pretty good satire of Beck, albeit from years ago:

The difference between liberals being mocked or satirized and conservatives/Repubs receiving the same treatment is, in general, the liberals react with indignation and offense. "How dare you mock me!" is the unstated message.

I'm not sure how you can claim SNL's portrayal of Tina Fey/Sarah Palin as "simply reproduced" since SNL is well-known for its satire, making the politician the butt of the joke. Your definition of what SNL/Tina Fey did makes a mockery of the term.
