Global Warming Mania!
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 8:35 PM
Johnny Mac employs his famous political ear of tin and goes on a 5-minute soliloquy on global warming. He only hit the issue of "energy independence," which is a more palatable way to talk about it to conservatives, once and he talked about the earth we leave for our children and the environment and his disagreement with Bush for the rest of the time. If he wants to work on reaching independents, he should wait until after he's won enough conservatives to win Super Tuesday instead of talking in a way specifically designed to tick them off. But, you know, he's John McCain.

Mitt Romney is exactly right on letting states take the lead on global warming and emissions standards if they want to tighten them, but he does the work McCain wouldn't do by pointing out that those actions have consequences in higher costs and lost jobs. When he talks these issues, he is smart and right.

Mike Huckabee manages to state Romney's point in a more lyrical way, even saying other states would love to take the jobs Gov. Schwarzenegger might lose by imposing such standards on California. Funny and true.

Climate change
Republican are behind the curve by continuing to call it global warming. The new mime with the loopy enviros is 'climate change' because we have had record cooling for a couple years now. note heavy snow in jerusalem and blizzards in tripoli. Even if the nuts are right I look forward to a 1 degree increase over 50 years.

Joe
"That means there is not going to be any global warming agreement."

I don't think so. Actually, the UN and most AGW advocates (well, the sane ones anyway) agree with McCain on that one. Kyoto omitted the developing countries, and I could understand the reasoning behind that, but it was a big mistake politically, and I think more people recognize that now.

As for global warming...
McCain has said any agreement has to be global and universal (for China, India, etc.). That means there is not going to be any global warming agreement.

Mit lied about entitlements
There was a lot of tension and anger tonight, but I still think it is too little too late for Romney. Had Romney run on his true positions and not tried to do what Hugh and others told him he had to do to win conservatives, well, things might have been different.

For example--Romney went off on entitlements tonight, but he criticized John McCain in Florida for voting against expanding Medicare entitlements just two days ago (specifically to alienate McCain from senior voters in Florida). McCain took the conservative position and voted against expanding entitlements and Romney attacked him on it two days ago! That was flat out disingenuous and contrary to the position Mitt Romney said tonight on the subject.
